Singer jailed after show
Women say Day trapped them on bus

March 25, 2004
Singer Howie Day, the opening act for Barenaked Ladies Wednesday night at the Alliant Energy Center, was jailed early today after a disturbance on his tour bus.
According to town of Madison Police Sgt. Wayne Stolpa, Day, 23, was jailed on charges of disorderly conduct, criminal damage to property and intimidation of a victim.
Stolpa said the disturbance, which was reported at 1:35 a.m., involved several young women who were invited on the bus. After getting on the bus, parked outside the center, one of the women tried to get off.
"Apparently, they changed their mind about why they were invited on the bus," Stolpa said.
Day tried to prevent the woman from leaving and tried to stop another from calling police, Stolpa said. The disturbance involved "brief, physical contact," he added.
It was unclear whether other members of the Howie Day Band were on the bus, but Stolpa said they weren't involved in the dispute.
"Howie was the only actor involved in this," he said.
He had no information available about intoxication being a factor in the incident.
Police have referred the charges to the Dane County District Attorney's Office.
Day, from Bangor, Maine, has enjoyed recent success with his 2003 album "Stop All the World Now." He has opened for several major performers, including Sting, Sheryl Crow and Tori Amos.

Wow, now we're measuring people's success by who they *open* for? That's sad. Me, I once opened a door for Michael Stipe-- does that count??

I opened a bottle for him. Or maybe it was just a can.

"Day and members of the Howie Day Band invited four or five women onto their tour bus while signing autographs after the show. The group sat around drinking and talking and one of the women went to the back of the bus to use the bathroom. Day followed her in and then tried to kiss her, but she refused his advance. Day became upset, left the bathroom, slammed the door and then blocked it when she tried to leave. Another woman tried to get Day to let her friend out, then tried to call police on her cell phone. Day allegedly grabbed the phone and broke it in half, then yelled at her to get out.
After the first woman managed to get out of the bathroom, Day allegedly threw beer on them from a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon, the complaint says.
Day later admitted grabbing the cell phone as the woman tried to call police and breaking it, but then said he thought it may have already been broken, according to the complaint. He denied throwing beer on the women."

How nice, the shirt he's wearing is flippin' the bird.
Also in that article, it says:
"That was probably wrong of me," Day reportedly told an officer, referring to breaking the woman's cell phone. "But I felt violated."
He's lucky it's only a misdemeanor or else he'd really know how it feels to be violated. *cue Oz theme music*

I know I chuckled at that comment. This article is somewhat odd though - lost of details provided about the conversations between Day and police. Details down to the type of beer allegedly poured.

Well, it did happen in Wisconsin...they're probably noting the beer because it wasn't "Milwaukee's Best." ;)
