Title: Delgados
Post by: Bags on March 26, 2004, 12:26:00 pm
A washington Post Pick of the Week:

 Music

Scottish indie-symphonic pop masters the Delgados could probably use some of the critical support given to fellow travelers such as Lambchop and the Flaming Lips. Glasgow's finest come to the Black Cat Tuesday with Malcolm Middleton. Call 202-667-7960.

 -- Richard Harrington

Too early for a roll call?

This should be one of the best shows of the year. They were absolutely stunning last time around. Count me and the missus in.

We discussed this before, but I can't remember the answer, is the string section with them again for this tour?

The talk was of no string section. But I have not checked the website. I am happy for it all to be a surprise. Conversely I dont mind if someone does the donkey work.

I knew they were twins, but ever since The National came through town, I have a whole new appreciation.    ;)

There were no strings at the recent Toronto show.

Won't be at the show. Will be at the Recher instead for BRMC.

I love "Domestiques," inevitably.  And I don't have Hate, which gives me somethin' to buy from them.  Always a good thing...

Pollard, have you looked at several playlists?  Do they seem to be keeping to a pretty standard list?

This should make mark smile.  In Allmusicguide, here are the genres listed for Delgados:

Styles:  Indie Rock, Indie Pop, Scotland

Thanks, Pollard, for the additional Philly list!

Funny because Scotchland isn't very stylish.....

I thought you had HATE. Its a great album. You should buy it and the Great Eastern tonight.

I have the Great Eastern.  Don't have "Hate" -- but really, in a way I'm glad I get to buy it at the show as I bought Great Eastern at Amoeba (which means they got no cash) and was blessed with Peloton and Domestiques as a gift.   ;)

Hate is def. their best.  One of my favorite albums of that year.

Just to take a contrary point of view..... I think that Hate has a lot of songs that sound just like tracks from the great eastern, but with new words.

Or to put it another way hate didnt really advance their musical palette the way that the great eastern did.

fucking brilliant show last night - I am now hopelessly and helplessly in love with Emma and her effortless, understated cool, her guitar playing and her voice......

they seemed a lot more happy and playful, as much as they can be considering their material, than last year. i thought it was a great show. and done very well to the point that i didn't miss the string players.

markie and lulu were planning on it - I hear they had a lot of catching up to do with the band   :p

i wonder if lulu ripped into stuart again about the maker's mark, like last time.

I so would have gone to Saint-Ex, if the group i was with didn't all want to go home...damn it. One of them blamed it on careers...puh-lease...I don't have a career, I have a shitty job that barely pays the bills, who cares if you're out till 2 in the morning damn it!

oh, and its an utter travesty that there were only about 250 people there last night...

cafe saint ex was pretty cool...........even though it was full of waaaaaay to many scottish gadgies...........

the show was brilliant last night, i thought the lack of strings would make a huge difference to their sound, but it really didn't make that much of a difference...........

and i think you are all crazy.........no member of that band is hot..........
Title: Re: Delgados
Post by: markie on March 31, 2004, 11:03:00 am
Ummmmm,

Well I thought that was an excellent show.

But I listened to Hate this morning in the car and it really does sound much better with strings. Just playing really loud to cover up their absence isn't a real substitute for the shear beauty of last time.

Emma is tiny and needs better support.

I decided it was best to leave the band mostly alone this time.

Can I just say, the highlight of the night for me, though I did think it was a great show, was while talking with a friend about BigYawn, a random stranger came over to us, and asked "What website are you talking about?" I answered, "BigYawn." His reply, "That is such a great site, I love BigYawn." The Delgados could have blown and I would still have left a happy man. Whoever you are buddy, thanks for making my night.

I thought it was a really good show -- I wouldn't say brilliant, but that's probably because I don't love them yet.  I just started listening to their albums a couple weeks ago.  But they were tight, fun, and the music is really interesting.

As you can tell by my fondness for Domestiques, I love it when they let loose and just wham on their instruments -- they do it well.  I'd love a bit more of that.  I think when they come back in October to support a new album, it will be brilliant.  I really dug the new songs, especially the one mid-set.

SO how was the DJ gig at Saint Ex??  You haven't told us?!?

And why do you fight with the band if you love 'em so much?   :D

You're as easy to get as they say I am! You take your hotties *very* seriously, don't you lu...
     <img src="http://pages.prodigy.net/indianahawkeye/newpage12/1.gif" alt=" - " />
And we do have that overuse of ellipses in common.....

PS, Malcome whats-his-name, the opener, is the "anti-nkotb."  VERY quiet talker, I couldn't hear a thing he said between songs.  Very sad songs.  Very very sad songs.  I'm evil; they were so sad, I laughed a little.

That drunk chic with the mod dress and shag hairdo, a la pinky tuscadero?

I was sure she was going to jam her lit cigarette on markie's ass -- ooooh she was all over the place in an odd gremlin kind of way.
