There's been a lot of banter recently about all the great local talent -- but only in the most general sense.
Get specific kids. Name 'em.
-
i've always liked the bicycle thieves, cheery pop-music, from the moment i heard them - plus a nice group of guys.
and i think schwa has a great voice - but hes a singer-songwriter, so not sure he really counts. but i would still pay to hear him :)

do i lose cred if i go as far above-ground as thievery corporation? been a fan for almost a decade now...
-
...no, you gain street cred for supporting a local band. Thievery Corp. is one of the only local bands playing Virgin Fest. I suspect they have a few fans outside DC too...
-
I think some of these lists are being way too generous, but as someone said earlier today, it is all a matter of perspective. It would be hard for all of us to agree on the same ten good bands.
-
evens and thieve corp probably draw the biggest crowds. mary timony is good too.

Medications
Beauty Pill
French Toast
WSC
Cedars
Nethers

Has anyone heard of The Vita Ruins? They've only played two shows, and haven't released their EP yet, but they've been getting some good buzz lately. DCist.com Article (http://www.dcist.com/archives/2006/08/10/the_vita_ruins_1.php#more)
Their next gig is a dcist.com sponsored show @ DC9 on September 14th.

I would second that with a big 'hell yeah' except that I haven't seen him as a solo performer. That said, I saw Canyon 4-5 times and was absolutely blown away every time. They were so good, and it's just gutting that they went their separate ways.
I love the Apes. I've seen them a few times and it's always great.
I like what I've heard from the Sounds of Kaleidoscope and am jazzed for the show tonight.
-
Wooly Mammoth, Owls and Crows, Kohoutek (damn good show last week at RnR), John Bustine, Adam West, Justin Jones
-
the whips
-
I would add Thao Nguyen and The Aquarium.
-
Oh and I still like Verbal although they don't seem to be playing much anymore.
-
I'm throwing in a vote for Five Four (www.fivefourmusic.com).
I think the rest of my favorite local bands have already been mentioned.

isn't Pagoda from New York?
-
there are two pagodas, and the one in dc has been around longer. adrian from shortstack is in the dc pagoda. while i wouldn't call them "great", they are quite good and sound like the clean and yo la tengo and galaxie 500.

What are the odds of someone having the time to create a webpage that lists all these local bands, has a short description of their music (especially a "RIYL"-type tag) and links to their webpages?
I'd love to support local music and something like that would go along way to making it easier.
Yes, I'm f**king lazy...but it's hard to keep up on all this stuff.

I have to do a technological project for my IT class at school for the betterment of the community. . I'm wondering if I could justify this haha.
-
dcist.com does a good job covering local indie rock bands...
-
Hands down, the Rhodes Tavern Troubadours are the best local band. They've got the WAMMIES to prove it.
-
guess this would be a great local band that I miss-Bad Brains
