Title: The VMAs
Post by: ratioci nation on September 01, 2006, 09:14:00 am
The perfect tool, you can bash stuff with it, put it under a short table leg, play catch with it, probably jackhammer a hole with it as well.  Geez, you could probably say the same thing for the moon man.

You are way off.  This is why the general music-buying public sucks.

Wow...isn't this a bit like reviewing a concert you didn't go to...or slamming an album you haven't listened to?  I like James Blunt; I've heard him live, and I like this album - altho the genre isn't my "mainstream" preference.  Of all the ugly, mysogynist crap that went on with the hip hop/crunk/gangster crowd at the VMA's last night, I'm shocked the forumites are complaining about James Blunt.

If it's any consolation, I read all your posts before deciding that you were a complete fucking nutcase.

What's better? Mysogyny or racism?  Just curious.

I flipped it on and the Raconteurs were playing Steady As She Goes, and it was great, and not even 1/3 of the way through they cut to show Pink, Christina Aguilera and someone else backstage and then went to commercial.  That was totally pathetic.  I don't blame the Raconteurs, though, for showing up and getting publicity.

Saw T.I. perform, defining the triumph of Diddy-esque bombast over substance.  Diddy Jay-Z 50 Cent (by making money rather than quality the goal of hip-hop culture - even if they have been attached to certain quality tracks) and the ATL have done untold damage to hip-hop.  Folks are making money, but the glorification of nursery rhymes + lifestyles of the rich and famous fantasies has gotten completely retarded.

Jack Black as host was surprisingly flat and not funny.  The writing was awful.  Then he did the I'm Jack Black and your Jack White thing with Jack White which made Letterman's Oprah / Uma thing look like comedy gold.

Then the guy from Linkin Park won for "best ringtone" and gave a 10 minute acceptance speech.  That said a lot about a lot.

That's about all I saw (so far).

The VMAs are like a sh*tstorm of the modern popular music culture. . . some may connect to whatever the hell is going on and survive intact (teenage girls? pre-schoolers? immigrants who think it makes them more american to like this?), while others will be repulsed and fall by the wayside realizing this has passed them by (thank g*d).  Of course I say that every year, and always watch . . . . and yeah, always perversely enjoy it.

what about the raconteurs playing "white light, white heat" with lou reed? that was fucking awesome but not a very mtv-like thing to do. not too many vmas viewers would know who the raconteurs are, let alone lou reed. when afi won best rock video, and the singer said "lou reed everybody!" hardly anyone clapped or showed recognition. it was depressing.

Are you serious?  They seem custom-built for MTV in my opinion.

Look, I like everything.  But James Blunt is REALLY bad, even too bad for my tastes.

And I'm not racist.  I hate everybody equally.

Thanks for sharing your opinion about me.  Since I've never met you, and vice versa, I find your typical rude, meanspirited and insulting response sort of moot. Since you seem to be answering responses to his thread, just how far up PDX's ass do you live now?

no i dont think the raconteurs are custom built for mtv. the majority of people watching the vmas will be into people like justin timberlake, panic at the disco, 50 cent, etc. the raconteurs arent in that category

Did Lou Reed really play?  Holy fuck, I can't believe I missed that.  Then again, it will be on in syndication for the next six months, over and over and over again...

I tuned in to see Ok Go nail their dance, after the serious slap in the face of having them perform directly after the Best Dance Video award was awarded, for which they weren't even nominated...and let me tell you those boys can dance better than almost all of the nominees...well maybe not Madonna...but she didn't even win...

The Raconteurs were great, but when I was watching you only saw 15 second clips of songs.  And Jack Black, who is probably one of my top 10 favorite actors, was horrible.  It was just bad tv.

HAHA
From Fluxblog's VMA Play by PLay (http://www.fluxblog.org/)

8:36 Jack White jams a bit as though he's G.E. Smith on a rerun of SNL from the early 90s.

I thought Jack Black had potential when he opened the show by saying how much the VMA's have sucked for decades. He fell apart after that. However, I give him props for introducing Paris Hilton as "the world's most attractive producer of independent film."

 And OK Go rule.

They weren't eligible for this year.  If anyone remembers them next summer, that's their chance.  Still, you gotta say, the publicity was pretty damn impressive.  I have a feeling half full Black Cat shows are a thing of the past...

I DVRed it and will have to say The Raconteurs was the only artist worth seeing, how such a talented group could release such a so-so record is beyond me.... Missed the original ending and MTV edited out the appearance of the gatecrasher for the rerun, but most likely on youtube though.

lou reed was up there, but not really playing gtr or singing really, just mugging - no metal machine music covers either. jim jarmusch also sat in for a song.

Agreed considering the MTV connection made this song huge
But I think it's all about the labels
