Post by: sweetcell on December 14, 2006, 06:33:00 pm
Pollstar's Concert Industry Awards (http://www.pollstar.com/news/viewnews.pl?NewsID=7504)
 Updated 03:03 PST Mon, Dec 11 2006

Pollstar's 18th Annual Concert Industry ceremony takes place February 8 at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles. The soiree honors touring artists and the professionals who keep them on the road. It also serves as the grand finale to the 2007 Concert Industry Consortium, which will be held February 6-8.

Award nominees are selected by a well-rounded group of concert business professionals and voted on by subscribers to Pollstar magazine.

Artists up for awards this year include Madonna, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Roger Waters, The Rolling Stones, and Tim McGraw & Faith Hill for Major Tour of the Year, and Carrie Underwood, The Fray, Hinder, James Blunt, Panic! At The Disco, and Wolfmother for Best New Touring Artist.

The North American festivals picking up nominations for Music Festival of the Year are: Austin City Limits Music Festival, Bonnaroo Music Festival, Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, and Lollapalooza.

The International Music Festival of the Year nominees are: Big Day Out Festivals, Download Festival, Reading / Leeds Festival, Rock am Ring / Rock im Park, Roskilde Festival, Summer Sonic, and V Festival.

The nominees for Nightclub of the Year are: 9:30 Club, Bowery Ballroom, Commodore Ballroom, House of Blues Chicago, Nokia Theatre Times Square, and The Wiltern.

Some of the other categories among the 33 awards to be presented (click here for complete list (http://www.pollstaronline.com/cic2007/Awards/awardscategories.htm)) include Arena of the Year, Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue, Talent Buyer of the Year, the Bill Graham Award for Promoter of the Year, and Road Warrior of the Year.

This year's event is being hosted by comedian Lisa Lampanelli, who among other things is credited with basting William Shatner like a turkey during his recent Comedy Central Roast. An awards party ticket is included with each CIC registration and tickets can also be purchased separately at www.PollstarOnline.com/CIC2007 (http://www.PollstarOnline.com/CIC2007)

If BEN'S CHILI BOWL started having concerts, the battle for this faux-award would be epic. The bloodshed would rage for days.

i would have expected a goatee'd hipster to have complained by now about how these awards are a meaningless corporate circle-jerk organized BY DA MAN.

but here's your chance to take it to the streets:  canukia's radio 3 (http://radio3.cbc.ca/) is accepting votes for their newly-minted bucky awards (click on "vote now" link on the left).  vote for your fav montreal indie acts like the dears, islands, the stills, and your soon-to-be-new-favs: Les Breastfeeders and Carbon Dating Service.  lots of decent-sounding streams to listen to (click on a band's name in the voting form).

30. SOUND COMPANY OF THE YEAR
       Britannia Row
       Clair Brothers / Showco
       Rat Sound Systems
       Sound Image

Rat Sound Rules!  Their cabinets used to have rats spray painted (black on black a la Hitchhikers Guide) on them.

Shame this isn't televised (that I'm aware of). This would make for a great forum party.

i've been to 930, bowery and nokia and 930 is the best out of the three that i've been to.  bowery is pretty crappy with very little room to get around inside.
the nokia theater is a nice place but it's got an incredibly stale atmosphere.  it's like a hotel lobby or movie theater or something.

ive been to all 3 as well, but i really wonder if you made it past the bar at the bowery. because bowery ballroom is not that tiny of a place. if its a sell-out yeah, you can barely move, but 9:30 club isnt much better when its jam packed. there is also the upstairs as well, with tables/chairs which is a great place for some shows. and for the most part, the sound is almost always great. and they also serve 180 which i like a lot more than red bull   :D

i like the 9:30 just as much, before anyone decides im a snobby new yorker, and still try and support as many DC shows as I can. i cant say i have a favorite, as i prefer even smaller venues, but they all have their own charm.

nah, the sound wasn't bad @ bowery, but i didn't like the atmosphere.  i've been there a few times now and i haven't enjoyed the venue all that much.  the upstairs area was totally packed once the show was going (and i've been in there from when doors opened for a show when it was less crowded).  i didn't say that the bowery was small.. it just seemed to me like there was less room in the... usable space.

staff @ 930 have also been more courteous to me in my experience there than any of my trips to the bowery (and i've had some sort of issue every single time @ bowery, even if minor).
