Thursday June 17th, tickets available through HFS only.
-
They did this in Philly before the Tibetan Freedom Festival (at some place called the Factory, I think) under an alias. I had a friend who worked for Y-102 and scored me and a buddy a ticket. Ranks right up there in my top shows of all time. A must see show.
-
Most likely that was the Electric Factory.
Too bad about tickets not being available to the public. That's gonna be a great show.
-
i thought u could only win you're way in, I need some confirmation about being able to buy tickets to this Beastie Boys concert
-
You can only win tickets to this one.

For these type of ticketed concerts, they really have 1000 tickets or so on reserve? Seems like an awful lot to give away. me thinks they might open it up to people who belong to their site.

Which pretty much elimates 95% of the people on this boad.
-
It's a shame that Seth can't take 100 tickets and give them to board members. I've always wanted to see the Beasties in a small venue. The closest I got was to seeing them at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago in 1992.
-
898 tixs
and free only threw hfs
-
No concert is impossible to get into. For the Blink 182 $1 show only 122 were available to ticket buyers back in October. Why can't they do the same thing like Blink did. People should earn tickets, not phone lottery luck bullshit.
-
I saw the Beastie Boys in the same room back when it was WUST Radio Music Hall. It was a great show and that was before the place was fixed up and the sound improved.
-
5/28/94 - I was there too. One of my all-time faves. The whole place was going nuts. The whole floor was a giant throbbing mass of people. Lots of people dancing their asses off in the balcony. Fantastic show.
-
how I loathe hfs.

i wonder if my paris hilton "research" will apply towards this show :)
-
so what are you guys gonna do?
actually listen to that station and try to call in?
ebay it?
curse the corporate rock gods?

So, people won tickets and the remaining 122 tickets were sold? And was the requirement to purchase to be made in person? (Sorry, I don't remember the details.) How about just plain ol' sell/buy method? Online at that.
What is more frustrating is, this isn't a band that comes around often or has been actively touring.
Eh, I think I'm complaining for nothing, 9:30 could possibly open up ticketing.
-
Well as if it isn't obvious, if anyone gets a pair of tickets and wants to get rid of them I'll take em! :)

I earned a pair of tickets to the HFSTival back in 97 I think it was. Didn't have to call to get them. Just had to get buck naked on Rockville Pike at 7am and squeege car windows ;)

i heard most of the tickets are HFS winners only, but a small amount are available as part of your "Beastie Boys Medicare" package
-
The DC and Rockville Tower Records are both selling the new album @ 12AM Monday. Maybe they will give tix to a certain number of buyers...
-
Its tough sitting through that station waiting to be the winning caller. I'd love to go, so maybe I'll be checking out Ebay. That might be the best option for desperate fans. I did hear on the station however, between a fantastic Hoobastank song and a rockin Nickelback power grunge ballad, that registering at their website could get you a chance at a ticket. So, if you are shameless enough to sign up as an "HFS.comrade", thats an option. Excuse me while I go vomit.
-
Doesn't it make you lose all respect for the band that they would agree to a show like this?

Yeah, it is frustrating.
Last year, hfs had a show that only had tickets available by winning them. Then, earlier this year the same band had a show with general admission, tickets for purchase. Since the Beastie Boys have a new album out, you'd think they would want to have a tour open to all. Looking at the lightly scheduled tour dates for them, it's possible they'd come around again.
-
Given the fact that WHFS is the one giving away all the tix, it would make sense that they are also the ones paying the band. So why would I lose respect for a band doing a paying gig? If you were willing to pay enough money you could probably get them to play in your back yard and invite or keep out whomever you please.
-
Hell at least the DC locals have a shot at tickets! Sucks they dont webcast...
-
Do you think they would play a gig for the Republican National Convention if they were willing to pay the band fee?

Probably not, but that would be comprimising their political beliefs, while playing a radio show to promote their new album is part of the business they chose to earn a living in. The two examples have nothing to do with each other.

Taken from the WHFS home page:
WIN Beastie Boys tickets for the special HFS show at the 930 Club June 17th. Only way to get tickets is to win them from 99.1 HFS The True Alternative. Be caller 9 at 1.800.321.whfs when we tell ya and you are going to the special Beastie Boys HFS show June 17th.
-
Some people see HFS as the symbol of greedy, corporate radio. Thus, they lack respect for the radio station. By agreeing to play for the radio station, they are thereby associating themselves with evil corporate radio. I would think that those who lack respect for HFS would thereby lose respect for the Beastie Boys.

I guess by that logic you could lose respect for anyone or anything.
Logic: The 9:30 Club is an evil money making venture not really in it for the music, but rather to turn a dollar.
Outcome: Rhett Miller regularly posts on the 9:30 forum therefore must be a supporter of the 9:30 Club. I now have no respect for Rhett Miller.
Hey I'm no fan of Clear Channel, Infinity or Ticket Bastard, but if I were to change my likes and dislikes based upon who worked with them, I'd never listen to another band with any taste of mainstream success.
-
I could really care less about the Beastie Boys, Clear Channel, or HFS. There not really on my personal radar screen.
I guess my point is the Beastie Boys are successful enough that they can choose who they play shows for, be it the Republican National Convention or WHFS. If they choose to play for someone I don't have respect for, then I would choose to lose respect for them.
But I could care less, because the Beastie Boys are so 1990's anyway.

didn't we all label the beasties as complete sell-outs in like 1994? that was high school for me.
-
for shows like this it should be sold at the box office only.....tix on sale at 10am(like the blink show)....i guess its back to the radio for me....bcuz i want to go....
i dont think the beastie boys know about hfs being greedy, trend following bastards....so you can't blame them fully. i also dont think they schedule their tours....

I tried listening to the station today and cried

I don't lose respect for them because they are on HFS. They are a mainstream band and thats going to happen. I just wish the station didn't play crappy music (and painful cellphone and tv commercials) in between ticket giveaways. I'm a bit let down that they would allow tickets to be distributed like this. And enough of the corporate sell out crap. Any band that quits their day jobs are trying to make as much money as possible, just like anyone else. If HFS offers to pay me some dough in return for doing my job in front of their banner, I'm probably doing it. And for the record, I watched the Old 97's play amid a half dozen corporate banners, during a Lollapalooza nevertheless, back in 97.
-
Fair enough. Your response seems reasonable.
I was just wondering why a band would choose to play a show where all of the ticket distribution was controlled by a radio station. Seems that they are playing their show for the radio station, rather than for their fans. If this is their only area appearance, is that a good thing? Seems maybe they would have been more considerate of their DC fans.
As for the Old 97's playing Lolapalooza (on the second stage, same tour as Korn), Rhett has stated that that whole thing was simply awful. Yes, the Old 97's and Rhett have made some questionable appearances in hopes of broadening their appeal, but hopefully now that they've acheived a moderate amount of success, thaey won't choose to play a show where a crappy radio station controls all the ticket distribution.
I mean, it's not like the Beasties are a struggling young band like the 97's were in '97.

fyi the beastie's are playing for hfs...not for the fans...i know no one listens to hfs but didn't anyone else notice higher than normal beastie play pre-hfsfestival??? hmmmmm....
i'd give anything to go to this show but it's not going to happen...
has anyone ever won something on the radio? when they say call now, how long do you keep calling? do they answer right away? anyone know?

I got lucky once and won tix to see Foo Fighters at the Patriot Center. I happen to be flipping through the stations when they said caller 9 would win the tix. I called and got lucky.
-
I used to win things on a daily basis from radio stations. But they were college radio stations, so I was probably the only person listening.

Hmmm, think I stopped listening to HFS in '93, same time I left for college. They used to have some real DJs and played stuff that wasn't jammed down your throat like the SOSDD crap now. They used to have a Sunday morning acousitical show.. now gone. They used to have some good mid-evening and late night DJs... now gone, an replaced by, god forbid, Loveline. They are turning into the radio equivalent of MTV, which is all glam, no real content, self promoting POS.
I've moved on to happier pastures (and better music), or so I thought, until my wife called and demanded tickets. I told her, what I'm about to tell you guys... call the record company and their publicist.. and shoot for press credentials.
Something like what HFS is doing does suck balls, but, you may have to throw 9:30 in there as well to agree to it. SO, it makes three looking out for their financial asses, so to speak, the Beastie Boys (promoting their album), HFS (to get more folks to listen, even if they play crap), and the 9:30 Club (since HFS and The Beastie Boys are paying them... plus think of the alcohol sales!)... so yeah, it's a Clear Channel 3-way circle jerk...
-
I won tickets to see Ozzy with Vixen and White Lion from DC101 a hundred years ago. And the classic Mick Jagger solo album "Primitive Cool." And tickets to see Stevie Nicks Merriweather. I can't help it if I'm lucky . . .
-
The beasties promotion is brilliant for HFS. They got me to listen for 3 straight days all day, calling in every hour, and i usually listen to talk radio all day. I now have my fill of Linkin Park, thank you very much.
Also, they are encouraging everyone to join their email mailing list which will help them grow their list exponentially. This will help them with advertisers as well, i would think.
I finally won tix yesterday. The trick is to keep trying. Even after the line was busy 5 times or so, it rang and after around a dozen excruciating rings I was the 9th caller....

so, let me get this straightâ?¦
we suck for doing the Beastie Boys and giving away most of the tickets
-
yeah damn this capitolistic society we live in...
a little research is also in order as WHFS is owned by Infinity Broadcasting not Clear Channel. if it was a Clear Channel station the show would have been at Nation anyways.
this could also mean bad news for us Idlewild fans, WHFS might feel obligated to play them now
-
Seth,
Sorry for glaming 9:30 in there with the rant. I do have to say that the venue is the only place to seemingly see good stuff around here. I was just a little peeved that HFS kind of monopolized the event (okay, yes, Inifinity Broadcasting.. not CC)... it's more of a PR thing for HFS rather than 9:30 Club, or even the Beastie Boys.
The question I have to ask is of HFS listeners, or those who are the Beastie Boys fans is... how often are they playing them. Since everybody says they've had their fill of Incubus.. how often are we hearing the Boys? If they want to promote the concert, you should be hearing them every hour on the hour... now that's a bad PR move.
If I could find a station to take say, a risk, and play diverse artists like: Stereolab, Ocean Colour Scene, Belle & Sebastian, Phish, or any other non-radio friendly artist, I may as well find something worthwhile to listen to in the car. Otherwise it's iPod for life. I have a hard time finding station (outside of some college stations) that will play most of the artists the 9:30 Club gets in... we truly need more of an underground radio movement here... to go along with the music offered.
-
$511 for a pair of tickets (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=16122&item=2249789944&rd=1)
-
your preaching to the choir around here... most of the regulars have left commerical radio for ipods, cds, internet streaming, xm, etc. commercial radio is all about the lowest common demoninator which in the case of WHFS is what males between 15 & 24 listen to. look no further than the hfsvital to see what the stations core audience is.
it's not uncommon for a bands back catalog to suddenly comeback into rotation prior to the release of a new record. and it's also not rare for the backcatalog songs to stick around longer than the new record.
-
Kosmo,
I take it by your low member number and the fact you're a moderator, you have some affiliation with the 9:30 Club. Anyhow, I was wondering, since your concert booker/promoter does stuff for a number of venues, why the Club hasn't thought about approaching XM, or even starting your own streaming radio feed on the net?
I'm actually more pissed that 90% of the folks that visit 9:30 don't get air play. I mean I've been to shows, actually asking folks what they listen to (outside of who they're here to see) to see what else there is since '93, I had to find stuff on my own (trust me, it's been fun too).
I mean I was willing to see George Clinton and P-Funk and James Brown, but also dig into They Might Be Giants and Weird Al Yankovic.. if' that's not opposite ends of the spectrum... I'm not sure what is. I'm probably going to try to see Aimee Mann as well coming up.. the last time I heard one of her songs on the radio, it was about the time the movie White Oleander was released and they tracked the ad with one of her songs.
I congratulate 9:30 and their booking abilities... just going a bit mental of the exclusivity of it. (Y100 and other shows do allow ticket sales, do you guys really know why this one ended up being a radio only promo?)
-
my low number only really indicates what a sad bastard i am :p other than occasionally djing ati have no official connection with the club. i've been allowed to peak behind the curtain only a few times. the admin function was given to me because i said sure why not.
so possibly one of the other staph members can answer your questions...
-
this was on craigslist.
I can't go to the Beastie Boys show at the 9:30 club. If you pick up the ticket, its yours. Please call .
this is in or around Falls Church
though, this person is probably going to hate me if someone already claimed it.

Do you think that person will appreciate you posting his/her phone number here?
-
How are tickets being handled? Are they transferable?
I mean if two tickets are fetching 611 dollars on Ebay, and may be worth almost a month's rent calling in sick and listening all day, just to sell them.

re:Do you think that person will appreciate you posting his/her phone number here?
if they werent going to be bothered by the amount of calls they would get from directly putting that on craigslist, i dont think the calls that they will get from this board (which im sure will pale in comparison) will provide for the heart attack.
edit: but i apologize, bid on at ebay!

Ugh...What is he doing playing this show?!?!?!?
Fri 06/18/04 Pat McGee Band
Fri 06/18/04 Rhett Miller
Fri 06/18/04 The Clarks
Chevrolet Amphitheatre, Pgh PA
Here's the AMG comparison for Pat McGee:
"Similar Artists: Dave Matthews, Train, Hootie & the Blowfish, Spin Doctors"
And the Clarks may be the lamest, most derivative band to ever try (15 years and counting) and strike out for fame beyond the 3 Rivers area.
Of all the bad bookings...I'm saddened. :(
-
Well from what I saw at the recent Pat McGee show I DJed, there will be lots of single women who maybe taken with Rhett's good looks. This of course if they don't drown the band out with their chatter. Also be sure to check out the killer line in the review of the latest Pat McGee band.
The one thing I can saw from lurking on the Pat McGee board prior to the show, was his fans are certainly more open to whats "popular" than say the O.A.R. crowd.

Ummmm.... last I checked, the 9:30 was a business. They're supposed to do things that make them get paid. I'm sure there are plenty of shows where the turn-out aint all that great and the club ends up paying the band out more than they take in on the door at least. Aren't we getting a little spoiled when we fault the club for booking an act that they're going to make money on?

I just heard that DC101 is giving away a trip to see the Beastie Boys in Tokyo, Japan.

Did anyone else feel dated when they saw the Beasite Boys on the MTV Movie Awards? Wait, most of you probably didn't watch them, they're one of those things I can't give up. But, damn, MCA looked OLD. I'm still gonna marry him.
:-D
-
one of my friends won on sat night / sun morning during the 4:00am hour. here's how they're handling it: they take down the winner's name during the phone call. that person must present a photo ID between 10a-7p to the HFS van at the 930 club on the day of the show, at which point they get a wristband that is valid for admission + one for a friend. this means that if anyone is selling on ebay/craigslist, theyre planning on either (a) only selling their +1 spot because they want the money more than they want to attend with any of their friends, or (b) somehow transferring the wristband from themself to the buyer -- i would not trust this technique. if i'm mistaken about any of this, please correct, but that's my understanding of it.

I had the unfortunate luck of seeing the Beastie Boys perform on some MTV awards over the weekend.....three 40'ish year old jews get no street cred I'm afraid, and just look silly at this point. They should give up performing and start producing younger bands or something.

75 year old Brits are allowed to be bisexual Britpop singers. 40 year old Jews aren't allowed to be hippity hoppers, since street cred, and not talent, are what is required for a career in hip hop. I read it in the rulebook.

Tickets are available through Tickets.com -- you can buy 2 per person-- they're not only available through HFS.
-
How much will they be through tickets.com?
-
"All tickets are to be claimed at Will Call at the 9:30 Club [815 V Street, NW] the evening of the show. Bring your credit card and valid photo identification.
The Box Office will open at 6:30pm, June 17th.
These tickets are non-transferrable. The credit card holder must be present to pick up his/her tickets. There will be no handing off of purchased tickets to a second party. There will be no exceptions for any reason."
No price was listed in the email...

I recommend not posting anymore information on this or people will catch on to this 24 hours from now. I have gotten into every rock show that has been hard to get into since 2000, and I plan not to let my streak go down the tube as well as my Title.
-
No price on Tickets.com either. I can't go -- I'm kinda beside myself.....such is life. It was actually better for me when it was impossible to get tickets. : ( Hope everyone here who wants tix gets 'em.
WHFS 99.1 Presents
BEASTIE BOYS

How am I supposed to sell these tickets on e-bay if I have to pick them up at roll call the day of the show?

You sell the tickets anyway, then let the poor chump find out he can't get them at will-call without you. You can sell the same two tickets a hundred times dude.
-
I knew there must be a away around this.
Thanks

I have Both Passwords. One thru 9:30 Club and the other thru hfs dot comrade.

this is worst kept secret presale ever! seeing as even the beastie boys email newsletter was suggesting people sign up as hfscomrade in order to get tickets for the show.

I can't do it. A friend is having a fundraiser that's really important to him, and I'm staying home for it, in fact -- I was supposed to be in Jersey, but I'm heading up Fri. morning now. Just have to repeat the internal chant, "friends are more important, friends are more important." They are, actually, but I cringe when I think about hearing stories from the show later...

I hear ya about conflicts. I was supposed to work (and see) another show. Both shows start at the same time! Argh!

add the beastie boys email list subscribers to ticket sale annoucement. Good luck getting tickets
The lowpoints of their info
NOW is when being a "Alright Read This" mailing list member really matters.
You are invited to the BeastieBoys.com internet-only sale
There are only a limited number of tickets available for purchase
online only and tickets will go in minutes.

get ticket. Keep it on the DL.

What's the password? Seriously.

If anyone wants to send the password to an occasional poster that would be cool. Keep in mind I'm a Calgary Flames fan and might need something to cheer me up..... ;)

Do we have *any* idea when the BBoys might go on? My friend *throwing* the fundraiser wants to try and get over to 9:30...but it'll only work if they go on 10:00 or so.... The 6:30 Doors Open time worries me (though I realize they have a LOT of tickets to deal with at the Box Office, as every single one of them will be will call).
-
i wouldnt go to this show if someone GAVE me a ticket. and i certainly wont pay $25 a piece for it (which is about what it will be buying them online!)

well, two reasons
a) no one is going to give me a ticket
b) the Beastie Boys make my head hurt.

first time poster here. decade plus attendant of 930 shows.
that beastie ticket fiasco was a farce. four people on T1 connections, and the best we got was a boston red sox tickets.com "waiting room."
i speak ill of no one on V street, but tickets.com is about as technologically reliable as a three flippered mongoloid operating a Commodore 64.
interstingly enough. the people at tickets.com are currently not answering the phone, even though it's "normal business hours" for them.
Technical Contact:
hostmaster@TICKETS.COM
Tickets.com
555 ANTON BLVD
COSTA MESA, CA 92626-7811
phone: 714 327 5400
fax: 714 327 5410
this speaks volumes about their ability to deliver.
-
Can someone please tell me why WHFS told me I could buy Beastie tix online at 4pm, only to find that the presale password didn't go away when it was supposed to? And now its sold out? I need answers since I can't get WHFS in my apt...
-
If any gracious person w/ 1 extra BB ticket wants to sell, I can meet you at 9:30 and go in together and give you the money - I am the longest running BB fan whom was kicked out of the tickets.com sale - what a piece of ?!@#$ to be an overloaded error :D
-
I tried, no ticket. And yeah, what was up with that Boston Red Sox "virtual waiting room"???
-

I don't understand this -- what do you mean?
The 9:30 Club password worked as promised, but with four internet windows open, I got bupkis.
-
i found myself yelling go yankees at that waiting room

Hmmm....it's called supply and demand my friend. Very low supply and very high demand. Those presale passwords went out to thousands of people, who then shared them with thousands of people.

It took me until 4:20 to get my order processed. I kept getting that damn BoSox page at first and actually I though that was some sort of screw up and I closed that page a few times. Anyway even though I got ticktes I agree that it was confusing at best. What the hell does the Boston Red Sox have to do with Beatie Boys tickets? BTW I have two computers here on my home network and a friend across town tried as well. I was the only one of the three who got a pair of tickets. Oh well I guess the kids won't be going to this show.
-
another person with a b-day on thursday that got locked out of tix...i was on for almost a half an hour starting at like 4:02 and was taken to the same red sox "virtual waiting room" and didn't get shit!...the closest I got was requesting the number of tix, and then that came back "can't submit due to high volume so resubmit" message...so I kept doing that forever and never got anything, then a message came back saying "seats no longer available"...this sucks so much ass!
-
here's a glimpse of the red sox waiting room.
<img src="http://home.earthlink.net/~datskat/error.jpg" alt=" - " />
one of the 4 PC's we had running let it reload several dozen times starting at 4:01 and ending at 4:23. nothing changed, it just kept reloading.
quality.

kosmo - have fun at iota. I might be there late. (Check out the opener, Griffin House.)

Put the blame on HFS for setting up such a lame contest for this show. I remember the days of camping out in line overnight outside of Tower to get tickets. Now, thanks to Tickets.com, anybody can get these tickets, not the true fans. Well, we can still try to be caller 9! Bah!
-
die-hards anymore these days get the nix when it comes to going to their favorite shows - it bites *extremely hard*

Yeah I'd much rather spend the night outside the record store than buy tickets on the phone or on line.
People, there were a very limited # of tickets available online. 930 only holds about 1000 people and I'm sure hfs had hundreds set aside not available for sale. Get over it. It's not 930's or tickets.com's fault you couldn't get in.
-
no luck here. ah well, just sucks because i kinda have friday off

Huh? How do you know the folks on the internet today aren't true fans? What on earth is a true fan -- someone who has the time to camp out in front of a big chain record store? Sorry, I have a job -- I must not be a true fan.
That's just lame.
-
complete disaster. Ive been a part of at least a dozen presales and never had to deal with this cr@p. Luckily i didnt have to sit in the Red Sox waiting room. All i got was
"We're sorry, we were unable to process your request due to high transaction volumes. Please try to submit your request again"
In fact i still have a window up trying it and getting the same message, weird .

P.s. I will be the drunk naked guy in the clown suit at the door protesting my own stupidity for using Ticket.scum. If anyone has an extra - pleeeease let me know! please.

Well that came out of nowhere, but fine. I'm lame too, but at least I'm not complaining about something that happened as well as it could considering 5000 people were vying for 3 or 400 tickets.

I JUST GOT A 2 TICKETS FROM THAT VIRTUAL WAITING ROOM !!! I LEFT IT ON UNTIL NOW AND GOT THROUGH - WHO KNEW :D
-
Ok..I know that credit cards get denied freeing up tickets, etc...that being said, I'm still being refreshed in the waiting room on three browsers...what would others do -- give it up knowing it's sold out or hope you'll go somewhere with them? bc why would they keep refreshing and not just go to some page and say, "Dude, it's over, let it go"...

I already said it on Craigs List, but I mind as well repeat it here:
There's got to be another way?? For the umpteenth time I have been unsuccessful in getting concert tickets in a pre-sale or actual sale. This time it was the Beastie Boys for 15 bucks on Thursday night. Sure, I had the pre-sale password, a T1 Internet connection... got in the digital line on time just to have the site crash over and over again. WTF?? It's a big surprise there's going to be heavy Internet traffic at this specific time? Is this not fucking tickets.com's business? Why don't you take some of the gobs of money you making (granted this show was pretty cheap) and reinvest it in some additional hardware and software. Oh why... because the tickets will get sold either way irregardless of who is first but on some random probability that one's browser doesn't crash. F U tickets.com and your shitty customer service and web site. And F U too 9:30 club for not expecting more from your ticket vendor. My only solace is Franz Ferdinand wasnâ??t popular enough to sell out in 2 minutes flat too.
-

do you honestly think ticketbastard would have handled it any differently...
why does everyone automatically blame the venue and vendors for not getting this an that... how about the beastie boys, capitol records, and whfs? should you be directing complaints about the way the show was handled to them?
IMHO the beastie boys management handled this very poorly. First they encouraged people to become WHFS comrades to get tickets. Then they annouce the "exclusive" internet sale via thier email list. Which means that people from all over the country and beyond now know about the sale. Had it been WHFS and 9:30 club most of the people trying to get tickets would have been local and smaller.

nono, media, liberals and gay marriage. oh, and people that talk about bikes being better than cars.

i don't get the furor. its a tiny venue and there is a huge demand. there is no practical way to deal with the disparity between the supply and the demand. someone will always feel left out. the tickets.com works fine 99.5% of the time. its always going to crash for someone at sometime, though. bitch if you must, but it all seemed fair-enough to me.
of course...i was a caller 9, so .... i am above all of this.

i don't blame the venue. i blame tickets.com for being a shoddily run ticket vendor. i worked for a handful of clients that utilized their services over a period of 2+ years. i consequently received numerous complaints on their ability to provide product as described in a timely manner, as well as their horrendous reputation for customer service. check their record of complaints w/ the CA Better Business Bureau, as well as any number of national credit card issuing banks.

I used to sleep with interns at the radio stations to get tickets. That kind of closed the disparity gap for me and made her feel a little less "left out."

someone's gonna feel left out, sure - but the system SHOULD not crash, that is inane - the servers SHOULD be able to handle to overload and line people up as they log on - or at least explain the process on their website - I got tickets but I know many didn't because they closed out that 'Boston Red Sox VWR' not knowing that they should have left it on - It was truly confusing ... So yeah, Tickets.com Servers do suck and they should post the process ahead of time
-
yeah. i know i'd be pissed if i didn't get tickets. but not at tix.com or the venue...i don't think. again, meeting the wants/needs of 5000-10000 fans in a 1000 person venue = impossible. so even if tickets.com had worked flawlessly, many of you/us would still have not been able to purchase tickets. perhaps the beasties will be fitting in a merriweather post or other stop later in the year to support the new cd. that show will be just as good as the one on thursday i am sure....

I suppose you wouldn't get the furor- lucky you. But tickets.com works 99.5% of the time when you don't need it to- to order tickets for a low demand show. In my experience its works 0.0% of the time when I need it to. Again- this is their business... does customer satisfaction not matter to them? Can this problem not be fixed? And WTF is up with the Red Sox? Very professional.

i sense you are trying to console and we appreciate it but I'm sorry ... a show at the small and intimate 9:30 or similar kills any show held at an outside huge ampitheatre - but thanks for the solace

of course...i was a caller 9, so .... i am above all of this.

2 browsers still open, dinner meeting in 30 minutes.
Hmm....

So, we got a non technical explanation of exactly what transpired today:
The Beastie Boys 9:30 and HFS links sold out in about 15 seconds, the Beastie Boys link sold out in about 35 seconds. The reason for the "Red Sox Waiting room" was because of the extremely high demand. It had no interference with the sales, but was used merely as a holding area for the thousands of people that were clicking on refresh after the event had already sold out. Basically, we have several boxes/servers that are used to service traffic on Tickets.com. Because the demand was so much greater than normal our 930 box sold the 600 tickets to those lucky persons and then got filled up with traffic from everyone else still attempting to get tickets. Then once our 930 box filled up, we had a predesignated back up box, a "Generic virtual waiting room" box that took over and handled the excess load. The traffic on Tickets.com was so great that this box filled to capacity as well. Once this happened the back up to the Generic VWR box is the "Red Socks Virtual waiting room" box. Although the "Red Sox Virtual waiting room" was confusing, it was a necessary back up to the back up that prevented the Tickets.com system from crashing. This all occurred in a period of 35 seconds, so although patrons believe that they were unable to get tickets due to technical reasons, the truth is that
the performance had already sold out at that point when the virtual waiting rooms went into affect.

i managed to snag 2 tickets at 4pm....yay for me.
-
Did they explain why they didn't open the page until 4:02? Or why I got to the billing page and typed everything in to get a DNS server error webpage and lost the tickets that I had?
-
Love the Beasties but being crammed into the 9:30 Club with HFS listeners (90% of whom would be just as thrilled to attend a Creed farewell show), while Beasties spend most of the night hyping their mediocre new album does not sound like fun. Oh wait...let me guess. The mega talented Sports Junkies will be on hand to introduce them and to tell us all to make some noise. Yippee.
Take comfort. When they play a real show here (Merriweather I'm guessing), it will be less of a clusterf**k to get tix, the set list will be more diverse, the show will likely be longer, and you can twirl and sweat with all your comrades who have spent the afternoon whining today. A small venue does not equal a great show.

Eddie - any word on selling Parking online for this event?

Am I the only one that sang a chorus of Virtual Fugazi (very loudly, too) every time the screen refreshed and I got welcomed back to the Virtual Waiting Room? At least my co-workers are amused now!

So Eddie, the virtual waiting room is only a hoax? But someone here got tickets after waiting for an hour in the virtual waiting room, how does that work?

That seemed to be a pretty simple explanation for me. Tickets.com didn't see it coming (smart move there....), too many people tried for so few tickets, no explanation why i got an error AFTER I got to the billing page, therefore, it sucks...I'm going to eat some Ben and Jerry's...(and shake my head at the poor kid who thought the Virtual Thing was a hoax)

Since we don't get the parking lot until 6:00 PM, we aren't going to sell advance tickets for the lot. We never know how many cars the owners of the lot will still have there after 6:00.

You mean this show was for the BEASTIE Boys? Well, sheeit. I was tryin' to kick it with the real B-Boys.

With that said, tickets.com still needs a bigger sling shot if they want to bowl in the same league as goliath ticketbastard. i always root for the the underdog, at least until it mildly inconveniences me. and from what i hear, as far out of an idea as it is, some actual phone support wouldn't hurt.

Bullshit. I've never had problems like this getting concert tickets, EVER. I seriously thought that getting emails from EVERY single mailing list involved in the presale meant something; I was actually being rewarded, I was finally getting the inside info I signed up for at these websites in the first place.
I was confident that I could go and experience a fantastic intimate concert at my favorite local club, and afterwards thank three legendary guys for being a major inspiration for my really getting into music.
But at 4 the show sold out and my anger manifested itself as a gnarly thunderstorm that ravaged the Eastern Seaboard. Apparently even a fast internet connection and a computer with ten million browser windows, all of 'em firing, can't compete with a shitty ticketing company that crashes and misdirects people and can't form any true sort of first-come first-serve waitlist.
Oh, and why not have the radio station and some message board morons ruin the entire purpose of a secretive PRE-sale. God forbid some of these sissies should have had to prove their dedication by missing a night of American Idol or some crap to wait in a real line along V street!
No. Instead, we can either give free publicity to those shitty Sports Junkies by waving signs behind stunned murder witnesses on the Channel 9 News, or rely on computer overloads and the like to royally fuck hundreds of Beastie Boys fans. Nice planning. Hope you realize the Boys <and all bands> would rather play to fans who'd wait on line for tix than some damn lucky 9th caller who can barely hum 'Intergalactic.'
Oh well, I'll just go stop the thunder outside and rock the over-the-shoulder boombox, old school, because the fan that I am, I bought the new album today. And it is INCREDIBLE...long live the BBoys

If that were true, then they probably would have stipulated that in their deal with HFS prior to agreeing to do the "Special Secret Show for [INSERT RADIO STATION HERE]".
You'd also think that the band would cut their internet mailing list down so that only the folks with local zip codes would get the password to this show (which they didn't, it was out into at least a national if not global email). At least HFS and 9:30 passwords were to local folks.
Your much loved and influential band is not without fault here.

While I in no way think the Beasties're infalliable dudes, what does that point matter? Cut the mail list? The handful who'd use a Pre-Sale password to buy tickets and drive all the way down from Michigan, etc. for the show has the same fan enthusiasm as your local ticket camper, maybe more (maybe too much). As far as getting into the show, they're at least as deserving.
...like its noble or something for one of the country's largest radio stations to lead on thousands, dangling an unstated number of tickets for sale all for the glorification of their lame email list. What do they care about helping out locals versus other people

I do not understand all this whining and complaining - the tickets were gone in 35 seconds, is it a wonder most of us didn't get tickets. it was a lucky hit, even if you tried at 4:00:10.... People at 4:00 GOT tickets. The system didn't crash, unable to sell tickets sitting there.
As for tickets.com, you do not build a system for the absolute peak usage, which may occur once or twice a year. If you want them to do that -- to build enough server capacity for 10,000 hits simultaneously in 30 seconds, you better be prepared to pay for it. This should make ticket service charges more like $30, $40 or $50 per ticket instead of $5. Because you have to pay to sustain all that server capacity that's idle 99.4% of the time [note to literalists, the numbers here are EXAMPLES, they serve as an ILLUSTRATION of building out the tickets.com system for peak capacity).
Some folks got tickets, some didn't. This is life. Get over it.
JohnnyBlades, does it not occur to you that by getting passwords from SO many email lists that you should then multiply the number of recipients getting passwords as well? With three venues giving out the password, as well as having it posted on the internet at a free concert site, it was bound to happen the way it did.
I tried to get Simon & Garfunkel tickets, through TICKETMASTER, not Tickets.com, and though I was dialing in on a T1 line at the time the tickets went on sale -- surprise, I didn't get tickets! Out of thousands, but there were that many more people trying. Do I blame Ticketmaster? No, I blame the 15,000 other people trying to get tickets too.

oh the irony of it all... the ones most loudly complaining about not getting tickets because tickets.com dosen't have the capacity to handle the load. are the ones on the T1 with several browsers auto refreshing thus leading to the waiting rooms to appear because of the volume they are causing.
while at least one of the 300 or so people who did get tickets was doing it via a dialup connection. one would say that having a bit of good karma and luck wins out once and in awhile.
-
I'm glad that I don't really like the Beastie Boys that much.

I'm sure nobody on the Beastie Boys mailing list from way outside DC called their one buddy in the area who isn't on a mailing list and said "Dude! You can't miss this show. You have to go and tell me all about it! I've got a presale password and everything!" He'll be the guy wearing the woolie or mesh hat in line to get his tickets - you can't miss him.
As Bags said, the more you disseminate the information, the less contol you have over it.

Wow, we haven't had this many first time posters since Justin Timberlake played the club. I wonder if any of them will stick around and contribute to the stimulating debate and meaningless banter that typically takes place. Maybe some of you will have some cool ideas for topics, such as soccer or brit-pop. I for one welcome you to our little forum. Enjoy your stay.

I can dig the soccer - but what I would really like to do is join a good local team - anyone looking for a Division 1/ODP player - completely off the BB topic but oh well - sorry for the cross-post :p

Yeah, get there as early as you can, since it's going to be a huge pain in the ass just getting your tickets before the show with every single ticket holder having to pick tickets up at will call. There will probably still be plenty of people waiting in line even after the Beasties hit the stage.
-
Somehow my girlfriend (I left her in charge of getting tickets this time)got shut out at first, and both of us got the Boston Red Sox thing . . . then at like 4:20 she got tickets. Weird. Looking forward to it though, except for the waiting in line part.

wow. . .you know the whole thing is bad when the wallflower comments on it. . .from an email to me: "Hmmm. I was just writing to say that I had no chance in hell to get Beastie Boy tickets. Those things sold out in about four minutes. That's bullshit."

My best friend won tickets on Saturday night, but she can't go. And of course since the tix are in her name, I can't go either. She had called in in moreso as a favor to me as she's not a big Beastie fan, and just got lucky. Stupid nontransferrable tickets! At first, HFS told us you could pick tickets up as early as 10:00 am the day of the show so I thought there was still hope, but now that doesn't seem to be the case. Tried the Net sale yesterday to no avail. So close, yet so far. :(
