I'll definitely be there, and I'm looking forward to hearing how he sounds in a place so big.  I've never seen him outside of the confines of the Black Cat or the Nanci Raygun in Richmond which is even smaller.

every time ted has radio 4 as an opener, i lose just a tiny bit of respect for him. they are among the worst of the worst.

Wow, Ted Leo really sold out the 9:30?  I know he's big and all, but I saw him last at the Cat, and I don't think that show sold out.  Good for him, anyway.
Title: Re: Ted Leo / Rx Roll Call

don't know why this is such a big surprise to everyone

he has consistently sold out the Cat for the last two or three years including a 2 night stand there in Dec 04 so makes sense he could sell out a night at 9.30

That wasn't such a bad gig, if you ignored Timony and Radio 4.  Holy christ he's got to work on new openers.

I still contend Hearts of Oak and Biomusicology are his best songs.

I agree, but it can be attributed to:

 1) We were distracted by the huge amount of traffic generated by those fucks in front of us who couldn't stay in one spot for more than 30 seconds

 2) The fact that Ted Leo looked a lot like
John C. McGinley (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001525/) from our vantage point way in the back.

I agree though, good times.  I didn't need to drink 50 rounds at DC9, though.  Hating myself this morning.

DC9 was pretty annoying last night, they were turning down all the gbv songs when they came on the jukebox and turning up all the hip hop, fuck that

hip-hop sounds better when its blaring loud so it really sounds like the dude is yelling at you!

it sounds even better when its really loud and the bass thumps the metal frame of your cheap Japanese car. i love that sweet vibrating hum.....

i really liked the show from where i was. it's always a fun concert every time i see him. though it is strange seeing him at the 930 when i've seen him at the black cat a half dozen times. there was definitely a split crowd though-those that were dedicated fans (standing near me thankfully), and those that were jumping on the bandwagon for whatever reason-like the gobs of obnoxious girls all standing around like they were at an intermediate school dance. but hell, what are you gonna do?

great version of "six months in a leaky boat."

where were you guys?  tbmtt and I got to DC9 at 930 and nobody was there...

we ended up standing at the bar near Food Food, which is fine, since I could stash my *huge* bag under the bar.  there was a group of frat/sorority types standing near us that had to be given the evil eye many, many times for talking.  but such is life.

i had an awesome time.  teddy is always fun.  but the crowd was dead and clearly didn't get it.

the highlight for the night was punching one of the abnoxious talky girls in the face (by mistake) while dancing.  Oops, sorry about that.

Ted was great but I was left with one question last night- Was that prick standing in front of me with the flipped up collar wearing "topsiders" or "bluchers?" I always confuse those things.

Is abnoxious defined as a girl that wears too short of a shirt?

No, abnoxious is defined as standing in the front of the crowd (near food food, actually) and talking through *every* song, including the ones that you shout "I love this song!" to.

i had some really good timing last night ... was at DC9 from 9:15-10:00 or so, then headed over to the club and found an extra for a friend just as ted was going on ... i thought it was a really fun show, hearts of oak was a big standout for me, but that's one of my favorite songs, so it would be hard to screw it up ... the bass seemed too high in the mix, kind of drowned out teddy's axe-work, but just a minor quibble

were any of you guys in that big group sitting in the back booth at dc9?  they didn't turn the sound down for my mega-mix of walkmen/replacements/JAMC/neworder/daftpunk!

We were in the very front booth whilst your megamix played.  It was great.  Esp. the replacements/new order bits.

I however was quite cranky at that point, since DC9 was out of Sparks, and I was relying on said frosty beverage to make up for the 12 hour workday and help me stay awake through the show.  Grr.

bluchers are the leather lace up shoes sold by llbean and bass. topsiders are the sailcloth sneaker type shoes used for boating/sailing. topsiders are actually quite useful for slippery docks and boats.

and i only know this because i grew up in a new england seaside town.

Well in that case it was a blucher. And speaking of PCU there were a lot of "that guys" in the crowd last night. As in that guy who wears the t-shirt of the band they are seeing to the show. This is the second show in a row that this has happened. Am I missing something? Have the hipsters changed the rules on me?

i was wearing a ted leo shirt (flipped-up collar), pleated shorts, bluchers, a trucker hat, tyler durden aviator sunglasses... all the while pumping my fist, drinking miller lite and quoting old dave chappelle show catchphrases while i texted my fellow sig eps in clarendon about hooking up at the "ballroom" after the show.

my homepage is set to pitchforkmedia.com.

 kill me now.

seriously, i enjoyed the show (even from the "cheap seats" between the merch stand and the bar). the soundmix was pretty much perfect i thought.

I am a boring first time ted leo show attender.  Great position at the cash bar.  Not as crowded as the typical sold out shows that I have attended.

I thought it was a great show and was happy to see that lots of cute teenage girls like Ted as well.

It was a short set, but for old guys who need to get to work on Friday morning it worked just fine for me.

I even liked Radio 4 in a complete ripoff of Duran Duran meets Miami Sound Machine sort of way (although the constant head-twitching by the lead singer will likely cause him long-term nerve damage).

I thought last night's Ted Leo show was pretty amazing!  This was the second time I had seen him, and this show was definitely better than the first.  (The first being at my student union at the Univ. of Illinois -- the one where he completely blew his vocals about 3 years ago and had to cancel the rest of his tour.   :(  )

Even though I had a ton o' fun, I did notice not a lot of energy in the crowd.  There were only about 4-5 guys (including me) dancing and just going wild while everyone else stood around with their arms crossed.

Actually, I didn't think Radio 4 was that bad.  I did expect worse, though.

As for the short set, well, I didn't mind that much, cause I did have a Metro to catch.

was i the only one that was dissapointed with ted?  i thought his guitar was way too loud, and i couldn't hear his vocals or the other two band members.  maybe it was where i was standing, since i was right up front, but that hasn't ever been a problem for me at the 9:30.
