Title: The Shins... behind white stripes?? why?
Post by: mike9182 on June 23, 2005, 07:51:00 am
Does anyone else think the White Stripes should be opening for the Shins rather than the other way around?  I can't believe they are finally coming to our area, but only to open for the White Stripes.  Don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against the stripes.  Its just that I like the Shins much much more and would love to see them headlining their own show at 930 or black cat... I'd even drive to Merriweather if they were headlining it... and I guess i still might go just to see them open... I cant stand the thought of them playing so close and not being there.  They are certainly popular enough to sell out 930.  Agreed?

honestly, who gives a fuck?  Both bands are good.  Why do people care so much what pecking order bands play in?   It's like bureaucrats worrying about who has the slighly bigger desk.

well, if the Shins play for 40 minutes and the Stripes play for 100, then it certainly matters.

but to the original poster:  come on man, the Stripes will obviously sell more tickets to the general public than the Shins.  Sure the shins are great but let be honest with ourselves....

White Stripes sell more albums,  They sell more tickets.  They headline.  It's quite simple really.

Personally I won't brave Merriweather to see either one.

I have a short attention span so 40 minutes is really enough for any band, in my opinion... except the Pixies...

I realize that the Stripes have a much wider commercial appeal.  I think, however, that the Shins have enough of a commercial appeal to headline their own tour, even if it means more intimate venues than Merriweather.  I am not concerned with the pecking order of the bands... Only the intimacy of the venue, the length of the set, and how convenient it is for me to get there.

You make it sound like they've never toured before.  They played 2 sold-out shows at the Black Cat last year.  I'm sure as soon as they release something new, they'll be playing sold-out 9:30 shows.  They're nowhere near Merriweather-ready though.

Get GA pit tickets and you are  up close and personal with the band... Sure the stage is a little wider than 9:30 club but the there are great sight lines from that area.   Besides the Shins have two records out with 69 minutes of music on them. There is a third on the way which they will likely play the most material from.  Expect a 45 minute set from them.  Merriweather will be a nice venue to see them especially in Sept...

The White Stripes have five records under their belt and huge hit single...

Actually, I just downloaded the Stripes new disc (temporarily, dont worry) and was listening to some tracks, and even though their first single "Blue Orchid" is jammin, the rest of the disc seems like its REALLY slow and boring.

i just kinda scanned through it but , whats up with that?  anyone hear the disc yet?

But have they toured since the release of Garden State? That's when most people "discovered" the Shins.

Yeah... I unfortunately only got into the shins last summer when I discovered my friend had put Chutes too narrow on my computer.  And I only got into Radiohead around the same time through hail to the thief... Strangely those are both two of my favorite bands of all time now, and I feel like I was deprived before last summer not really having beene exposed to either band.

Nope, 19.  I had heard creep of course and I had learned to play fake plastic trees at the request of a friend, but I never pursued their music any further until last summer.  Hard for me to believe too.

actually, i'm a bit surprised that the shins haven't been touring their ass off in the last year or so ala interpol or something ... they hit the peak of their popularity with garden state and they're nowhere to be found, they could have really been cashing in with constant touring ...

i guess not much about them though is "normal", they have one of the most introverted frontmen i've seen

[rant] i'm so sick of people on here whining about commercially successful artists either a) headlining or b) playing in larger venues ... it's pretty fucking simple, you sell records, you'll headline and play in big venues; you don't, and you won't ... it's not like the guy lining up the show rates the bands on artistic integrity and "gives them a shot" at selling out an outdoor amphitheater ... the most annoying part about the whining is that it's 90% disingenous, like you're trying to show us all a) how you cool you are that you know that a certain band is better or b) how indie you are that you had NO IDEA a band was more mainstream than another [/rant]

They did a short tour a couple months ago, but skipped over DC. I saw em in Philly at the Electric Factory. Great show.

They are certainly popular enough to sell out 930. Agreed?
It was sold out, and I think the EF is considerably larger than the 9:30.

thats a funny one. Although i have been criticized for doing that myself. not just with music, but with other things. Like a few weeks ago someone didnt believe me that i didnt know what "Desperate Housewives" was.  i really didnt. sorry.

My college roommate didn't know who Michael Stipe was, and this was 5 years ago.

He was quite familiar with Jello Biaffra, Genesis P-Orridge, Ian MacKaye, Negativeland, and Mike Ness 15 years ago, as well as listening to lots of music that sounded like clanging bells to me.

This all boils down to me a) wanting to see them play longer and b) not wanting to drive to merriweather, nothing more.  I'm clearly not trying to look "cool", as i readily admitted I only got into the shins and radiohead a year ago.

The Shins are going to be exposed by the White Stripes.

A very strange pairing. It's not a matter of who should be opening for who. It should be a matter of complimentary styles.

I could pick 20 bands that would be better openers.

No way the Shins could/should play after the White Stripes.

I've seen them both & the energy @ at White Stripes gig is intense - It's 'rock n roll'. The Shins are just nice.

No, this is the way of the world.  I'm astounded again and again at people who think "my favorite band should always headline the best club in the city."  Come on, you know it doesn't work that way.

Sometimes there are some truly surprising lineups where a band that had been bigger (ie, generated more revenue, not got higher critical acclaim) opens for a less commercially successful band.  But, often that opening band is years old and hasn't proven their mettle for a while, and most of the time we find out the 'lesser' band headlining has actually been raking it in for their record companies, et al.

Dude, I think Foo Fighters should open for Sloan.  Not gonna happen.

Obviously you missed the TWO headlining shows the Shins played at the Black Cat less than a year ago...

Plus, I'm not sure the Shins have the 'reach' to really dazzle crowds at a place like Merriweather.  I'm really happy they're opening, and their slot was the tipping point for me to decide to get tickets, but doesn't mean they could carry the place themselves by any means.

the shins may not have been touring their asses off lately, but they sure did when that first album came out. i saw them as an opener at the black cat three times around then, with red house painters, preston school of industry and modest mouse. that's a lot of shows in this area for a west coast band.

and wasn't that scene in "garden state" just totally cringe worthy? we get it zach braff. you think the shins are cool. aren't you hip? peter sarsgaard was the only good thing about that movie. he's the new john c. reilly, i tell ya.

yeah, but i'm sure they didn't make shit from those early shows ... they could have pulled an interpol and sold out the 930 club 3 times in the last year if they wanted to ... im not knocking them, it just seems like they've retreated when they've hit their peak, kind of refreshing actually ... overexposure is a bitch ...

What REALLY makes Zach Braff hip is his dating Mandy Moore (She's Thurston's daughter, right?).

i definately remember them opening for modest mouse in baltimore in like 2001. . .actually, the shins were the first band, then black heart procession, then modest mouse.  a year or so after that, they opened for the red house painters at black cat.
