First the return of Radio Birdman and now the Hoodoo Gurus!
HOODOO GURUS ARE BACK!
REISSUE OF BAND'S FIRST CD STONEAGE ROMEOS;
TUNNEL VISION DVD RELEASE;
NEW STUDIO CD
For over twenty years and eight albums, Australia's Hoodoo Gurus have given the world a dozen classic anthems, topped the charts and gained cult hero status. Hoodoo Gurus have now remastered their early albums and on October 24, the bands' own Hoodoo Gurus' Records will reissue their debut recording Stoneage Romeos. Additional back catalogue will be available digitally and a new studio release is planned for 2007.? Hoodoo Gurus have also assembled all their favorite video footage together in a long-form DVD for the US release of Tunnel Vision.
The Stoneage Romeos reissue comes with the original Australian front cover art, as well as additional new material, including a fold out poster, and features bonus tracks "Leilani Pt 2", "Be My Guru" and "Hoodoo You Love". Full of? garage punk songs, big fat rhythm section and a wall of guitars, the band's debut topped the US college charts ahead of The Replacements, REM and Black Flag and stayed at #1 for seven weeks.? The first track, '(Let's All) Turn On' is a manifesto - checking off the Flaming Groovies, Ramones, Elvis, the Stones T-Rex and the Archies. Of the release, All Music Guide says "StoneAge Romeos ranks with the most solid debut albums of the 1980's and if you don't like the Hoodoo Gurus, I suspect you don't like rock & roll very much."
The two disc DVD, Tunnel Vision, includes all the band's thirty videos, live performance filmed in venues around the world, and a full length documentary including interviews with the band as well as special guests including Red Kross and The Bangles.? "Tunnel Vision is a timely reminder of the importance of the Hoodoo Gurus." - Kerang
The band is currently in the studio recording a new album for release in Spring of 2007 to be accompanied by their first live dates in the United States in many years.

WOOHOO!
Hey Seth...

The next Shins album won't be released until January 07.

Stoneage Romeos is a record that's never lost a bit of it's sheen for me. It's been in steady rotation since the day I first heard it, probably in 1985. It's really held up...doesn't sound dated at all. A timeless classic! Ok...enough with the gushing already...did I say that I love this record yet?
I'm not sure how it'll benefit from a re-master though. I've always thought that sonically it was a great record as well. I guess I'll have to buy it (for the 3rd or 4th time) to find out.

Air Formation will release their new album in early 2007.
The Daysleepers will release their first full length in 2007. Their 2nd EP will be out on or around Oct. 27th. This band is incredible and already fighting off the majors!
Never Lose That Feeling: Vol. 2 sometime in early 2007. This is a compilation of classic Shoegaze cuts performed by different Nu-gazers. There is one cheat on this which is Sing-Sing redoing an old Lush song. Believe me, this collection is worth getting just for the remake of Catherine Wheel's "Black Metallic" by Hammock alone. This song is incredible! And I dare to say, just as good as Catherine Wheel's original.
Psychedelica: Vol. 2 is a 2 disc collection from Northern Star Records with a variety of new music in the Psychedelic vein with some of it being a bit more towards Shoegaze. (I'm curious to see who all shows up since I helped the label find some of the bands.)
Six.By.Seven Will be releasing a 'Greatest Hits' of sorts collection. Currently, they are in the process of selecting songs they think their fans would like to have included.
DestroyAllDreamers are working on a new release that will be out sometime in 2007 which will then be followed up by a tour which will include DC as a must destination. (A long story behind that one.) These guys are incredible! Think Mogwai, Mono, Bowery Electric with a stronger rhythm section, Bark Psychosis minus a singer, God Is An Astronaut, a less agressive Paik, a little Hollowphonic, maybe a pinch of M83 meets Flying Saucer Attack.
Fleeting Joys may be rereleasing their sold out debut full length; albeit, with a couple bonus tracks. Not sure if that is for public knowledge but...you read it here.
God Is An Astronaut should have another album out in 2007. A very rich and epic sounding instrumental band from Dublin, Ireland with an incredible live show. They really want to come play the US but are having lots of problems right now with working out all of the logistics with having to buy/rent a massive stage full of equipement they need that good old Homeland Security tear through every inch of when trying to transport. Right now it's just not feasible for them.
Hollowphonic have reformed and are working on a new album which I'm very much looking forward to hearing.
The High Dials are hard at work now working on a new one. I've heard one song and, so far, more goodness from the Dials.
-
The Afghan Whigs' best of on Rhino is set to be released in 2007. It will include new tracks recorded this fall with the 1965 (Dulli, McCollum, Curley and Horrigan) iteration of the band.

Today a special package arrived in our offices. SubPop sent over a fat envelope filled with copies of the new Shins record, Wincing the Night Away. Within fifteen minutes of their arrival, the sounds of various tracks competing for audio space were blaring out of multiple editors?? stereos like a giant indie-rock performance-art project. Yes, yes, we just got our hands on this album today, but we??re already madly in love.
Thanks to the ubiquitous Garden State soundtrack, the Shins have made songs like ??Caring Is Creepy? and ??New Slang? the stuff of car commercials and soccer-mom tape decks. But on the new joint, they??ve grown up and out of their pretty psychedelic Sixties pop and, you know, My Bloody Valentine referencing. In a good way. the Shins are just more experimental and more confident here, pairing strings, New Wave synths and what the band claims is a ??hip-hop beat? with the soaring vocals and perfect, transcendent lyrics we??ve come to expect from these quirky power-pop-makers.
We??re going to have a new favorite song tomorrow, but for now we??re getting behind the elegiac ??Turn On Me,? which opens like the Cramps covering the Supremes and evolves into this gorgeous, lilting serenade to heartbreak. It also features the cutest line in a sad, sad song that we??ve ever heard: ??You had to know I was fond of you, fond of y o u.? Oh boys, fondness doesn??t even begin to describe it.

Bastards.
Well, a leak can't be too far behind...
-
God I hope so. Loved the new songs I heard when they opened for Belle and Sebastian at the Hollywood Bowl. I think these guys have the potential to be the next REM (remember back when REM still made great records?).
-
finally . . . the polyphonic spree "fragile army"
"wait" was a good ep, with a classic cover of nirvana's "lithuim".

PJ Harvey heads into the studio
PJ Harvey is to start work on her eighth studio album next month.
The singer has teamed up with Flood and John Parish for the follow up to 2004's 'Uh Huh Her'.
According to her official website, the LP will be more piano driven than her previous material. A release date for the as-yet-untitled album is still to be set.
Meanwhile, the singer will be releasing PJ Harvey - 'The Peel Sessions 1991-2004' to mark the second anniversary of John Peel's death later this month.

Sloan Sign To Yep Roc
by
Stars of Filter's current "You Should Already Know" section, Sloan, have signed to the venerable Yep Rock label in the US. The label is gearing up to release that band's latest album Never Hear The End Of It on January 9th 2007. Sloan Will be in excellent company as the Yep Roc roster already include bands such as Bob Mould, Apples In Stereo and Ken Stringfellow.
Never Hear The End Of It will be Sloan's eighth album and their longest, clocking in at a hefty 29 tracks over 76 minutes, and the band will be stateside soon for some promotional tour dates. File that under "awesome!"
-
And speaking of the apples in stereo, that new album is fucking great too.

Our third album HANG LOVE will be released on Tuesday, February 13th, 2007 (the day before Valentine's Day). New website coming soon with news, weather, sports, and info as to where the record release party will take place. Special thanks to Steve Jones who, for the past month on Indie 103.1, has declared HANG LOVE his pick of the month at Virgin Megastore - even though it's not out yet! At the moment the album is being mastered, artwork is being designed, and we - the band - are resting up for some serious touring next year. Can't wait to invade your town and damage your hearing. HANG in there. LOVE, Burning Brides

I'm not positive, but I believe Feist, Apostle of Hustle, and Reverie Sound Revue should all have albums out in the 2007. (The first half, I think. At least for Feist and RSR.)

New Explosions in the Sky, late February or early March.
New Bloc Party, entitled A Weekend In The City, February 6.
New Pixies sometime in 2007.
New Therion, entitled Gothic Kabbalah, sometime in January. I'm probably the only one on here looking forward to that one. :) With much anticipation, I might add.

Holy crap! I'm drooling! I was getting a little tired of Cave's ballad phase, and this is the perfect antidote. This totally rocks! Vintage Cave lyrics. Here's hoping for some kind of Grinderman release in 2007.

Speaking about the track (http://uk.news.launch.yahoo.com/dyna/article.html?a=/061116/340/grqe2.html&e=l_news_dm), Cave said: "As our dreams and desires are hung on the butcher's hook of rampant consumerism, and the mirage and the illusion and the Nike trainers are served up on the trembling quim of an impossibly nubile girl-thing, 'No Pussy Blues' tells it like it is.
"It is the child standing goggle-eyed at the cake shop window, as the shop-owner, in his plastic sleeves, barricades the door and turns the sign to 'CLOSED.' It is the howl in the dark of the Everyman."
That Nick Cave is sooo pretentious. ;)
-
As pretentious as Collin Malloy?
-
No one is as pretentious as Colin Meloy.
I've decided to take back the word "pretentious" and make it my own. It's no longer a bad word. Indeed, I consider it a compliment, meaning "intelligent and ambitious music." :D

"Air are set to release the follow-up to 2004's Talkie Walkie on March 6 on Astralwerks. The record is titled Pocket Symphony, features artwork by contemporary artist Xavier Veilhan, and was recorded with Nigel Godrich over the last year and a half. Both Air members, Nicolas Godin and JB Dunckel (aka Darkel), sing on the album, and Jarvis Cocker and the Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon contribute vocals as well.
Pocket Symphony also incorporates some of the Japanese instruments Godin recently learned to play from an Okinawa master musician: the koto (also referred
to as a Japanese floor harp) and the three-string, banjo-like shamisen. However, a press release claims that "conventional instruments continue to play
a great role" in the duo's music.
Air plan to spend much of 2007 on tour. They'll hit Europe in the spring and America in May, with festival appearances scheduled for the summer, and more
shows throughout the fall and winter."
2 nights at the club please!!!!!!!!!

New Spiritualized, early 2007.
-
New Hella (there's no 666 in outer space) 1/30/2007 and from what I've heard of it so far, it's a huge disappointment. Going from a tight duo with complex compositions to a loose 5-piece with terrible vocals was such a horrible idea.

I think this is supposed to be more acoustic, or more Jason and less band...or something like that; so, I wouldn't be jumping too high for joy over this until you actually hear it. My expectations are kind of low and hoping they surprise me with something better.
Tearwave will be releasing their first full length sometime in 2007. Think it might be in the summer.
Also, Hearts Of Black Science will be releasing their first full length in 2007....(with a label that I helped to hook them up with.)

I'll go ahead and put my name in the disappointed camp. The new album has none of the energy of the first one. In fact, it's downright dull.

This is kind of old news but just noticed it hasn't been listed in here yet.
New York City's Interpol are in the midst of recording their eagerly anticipated third album.
The Joy Division-influenced indie rock quartet recorded their first two Matador albums (2002's Turn On The Bright Lights and 2004's Antics) with Peter Katis at Tarquin Studios in Connecticut, but have elected to stay closer to home for the still untitled new disc. "The studio is in NYC, and we're enjoying being local," the band posted on their website.
"The atmosphere and the environs of a recording facility affect the sound and feel of an album in the subtlest ways. And we are affected. And it is subtle. Sounds great so far. But we'll be here for a while yet. Upward and outward. Begin, begin. Big kisses all around."
The band's deal with Matador has ended, so they've decided to release the new disc through Capitol sometime next year.
Interpol briefly considered using the names Las Armas and The French Letters before settling on their current moniker. They've released several EPs and singles in addition to their two LPs.

I haven't bothered to listen yet but it sounds to me like a bunch of very boring old has beens trying to make if off of the creativity of the young and new. Guess it's not fair to judge without giving them a fair chance but I'm already pre-disposed to not like them since I couldn't stand them back in the day.

Saw something about a new music tapes album some time in '07 recently. Wasn't too crazy about the first imaginary symphony for nomad but the 2nd imaginary symphony for cloudmaking is a fun listen. I love Julian Coaster's saw playing; he should just put out an album consisting entirely of that and some guitar/synth accompaniment of some sort.

Hello, this is Robert from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. It's been a
long time since I've written to everyone... But I think we have
something well worth mentioning. We've just finished work on our 4th
album. We're very proud of it and it took a lot of blood sweat and
cheers to get it to this point.
As far as the mysterious album title goes... Jago thought of calling
the album 'BABY 81' a little while back. It comes from a story during
the Tsunami about a lost child. It was the 81st baby admitted to this
hospital in Kalmunai and nine mothers came forward to claim the child
as their own.
There's so many things to talk about, but I'll try to keep this
short. I know we've kept the direction and sound a bit of a secret on
this album, but it's basically what we do best; three guys playing
rock'n'roll better than any other band can.
It's our first album with Nick behind the drums since 2003 and it's
our life blood poured into this screaming mangled creation. It's
dirty and it's beautiful, but the most important thing is that it's a
part of all three of us again.
The official album release date is May 1st 2007 in the states (and we
should have the UK and Europe release info next week). I know it
might seem like a long time but there will be lots of radio play and
online exclusives.
The good news is that we will be doing widespread touring throughout
2007 and dates will be posted very very soon. There are lots of
things being talked about so I can't go into everything just yet.
"Baby 81" will be released on May 1, 2007 through RCA.
The track listing:
1. Took Out a Loan
2. Berlin
3. Weapon of Choice
4. Window
5. Cold Wind
6. Not What You Wanted
7. 666 Conducer
8. All You Do Is Talk
9. Lien on Your Dreams
10. Need Some Air
11. Killing the Light
12. American X
13. Am I Only
There's a lot more that needs to be said, but there's even more that
needs be done. Besides the fact that I need to get some sleep... I
hope you're all well and I'll see you on the other side.
Take care
Robert
-
What about Rilo Kiley, aren't they due for a new album this year?
-
50FtMonster release their debut album called "Life After Debt" supposedly sometime just before March 1st. It's being printed this week.
50FtMonster consists of a couple ex members of Catherine Wheel (Brian Futter & Neil Sims). From the music I've heard over the years from them, they are a bit more rocking and a little less gazey. Nothing at all like Rob's solo work.
-
I'm liking this Panda Bear disc (not really an animal collective fan at all) and the new Kieren Hebden and Steve Reid album.
-
God Is An Astronaut will release their 3rd album, "Far From Refuge", scheduled to be released on April 20th.

After months of speculation (and unrestrained hope) that it will be called Lesbian Wednesdays, the Arctic Monkeys reveal their second album will actually be called the very Emo-esque Favourite Worst Nightmare.
The album, the follow-up to Whatever You Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, is due for release on April 23, and the first single Brainstorm will be released the Monday prior.
Here is the track listing for your inspection:
1. Brianstorm (Part superhero, part IT engineer)
2. Teddy Picker (winkle pickers for teddy bears)
3. D is for Dangerous (D is for difficult second album)
4. Balaclava (Topical)
5. Fluorescent Adolescent (Arctic Monkeys in nu-rave shocker?)
6. Only Ones Who Know (Whether this album is really any good)

Dead Heart Bloom has a new album out called Chelsea Diaries. Available now via their website. Quite good yet not at all Phaserish. Much more Rhett, Grotty and Brennser friendly. A bit Alt-Country but not fully. Definitely laid back and I would assume very autobiographical. Kind of Leonard Cohenish at times. Fairly clean production with Boris' trademark artistic sensitivety.

So I just saw Sam Beam of Iron and Wine last night at Messiah College, and he mentioned that they've just finished a new album. He also played a ton of new songs from it, at least half the album I'd say, and they all sounded wonderful. He said it's called Shepherd's Dog, and that it won't be coming out until sometime in the fall.

Re: Arctic Monkeys
When is this due out in the states?

There's a ton of interesting stuff on here that hasn't been mentioned, and titles and dates for some that have been previously mentioned without them.

Looks like the new Arctic Monkeys comes out April 24, Alex.

the new Explosions in the Sky is kinda mediocre...
-
yeah i agree. the new EITS cd has its on and off moments. i saw them play @ the Warsaw a few days ago and while they were a bit rusty in the beginning, overall it was an amazing show.
can't wait to see them at the club!

Boy, March 6th will be a pretty heavy release day: Arcade Fire, Air, and the Stooges. Nice article (and video) on the NYT web site. And Bright Eyes.
I also agree with what was said above about the new EITS. Very underwhelming. Still, I'm excited for this upcoming show.

Has anyone actually been bowled over by what they've heard off of The Weirdness?

agreed, i was disappointed ... it isn't bad, it just sounds a lot like their last one ... "the rescue" was fun just because it showed a different side of them

After thirteen months of writing at their homes in Brooklyn, the National have announced the title and release date of their follow-up to 2005's Alligator.
The album's title is Boxer, and Beggars Banquet will release it on May 22.
-
i am really, really, really excited for this one and hope there's an iota show in the near future:
Mary Weiss was the lead singer of the great Shangri-Las, who carried Shadow Morton??s teen melodramas to the highest reaches of pop culture. Now, forty years after the last Shangri-Las record, Weiss is about to release a remarkable solo début, ??Dangerous Game? (Norton). Backed by the Memphis garage band Reigning Sound, Weiss is in fine voice, and the songs combine the dark innocence of girl-group records with a mature sense of regret. Several sound like outtakes from a great lost Blondie album, including the taut ??I Just Missed You? and the torchy title track. The highlights are a pair of gorgeous ballads: ??You Can Stay with Me? and ??Cry About the Radio,? the latter a luminous bit of retro pop that celebrates itself by taking a hard swipe at the modern market: ??Kids, kids don??t know shit / They just want a hit / I don??t write hits.?

I liked it all except for that track with Jarvis Cocker. His voice sounded uhh... out of place on it.

I like Air, but do they ever change their sound? Not many people liked 10hz legend, but at least it was different.

i think thats because they are not currently signed to a US record label... V2 music in the US became a catalog only label and drop all of the bands signed to it. Third Man is just Jack's imprint, so they are probably out seeing who will cough up the most in order to release the album
-
Didn't they sign with Warner Brothers?

The new Battles album is umm...interesting. The vocals work well on some tracks but get in the way on others. It's also not as minimal as their previous work.

I bought this on a whim and have only listened to it 3-4 times, but so far, I'm just not getting it. All the songs seem like Intro pieces to an epic album. They swirl and there's neat musical interludes, but the songs don't seem to go anywhere. What do you like so much about it?

Over all, the great, dense layers of sounds, the placement of different field recordings throughout, the ambient feel of the whole album, the beautiful Brian Wilson-esque vocal harmonies and much of the lyrical content which he recently posted here:
http://blog.myspace.com/rippityrippity (http://blog.myspace.com/rippityrippity)
I can give a track-by-track run-down later today if need be. :)

Bettye LaVette Returns to 'The Scene of the Crime' With Accomplices the Drive By Truckers, Spooner Oldham; New Record Out Sept. 25 on Anti-
LOS ANGELES, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- May 30, 2007 -- With the arrival of her new CD "THE SCENE OF THE CRIME," the flinty, intense soul stylist BETTYE LAVETTE unleashes a set of aggressive, sublimely crafted songs that are nothing short of mesmerizing. Accompanied by the freewheeling renegade Southern rock band Drive By Truckers, "THE SCENE OF THE CRIME" is a multifaceted gem, ablaze with the unusual light cast by LAVETTE's complex layers of wrath, reflection and resolve. Recorded in the classic soul mine of Muscle Shoals' FAME Studios, the set is fraught with dire psychological elements. "THE SCENE OF THE CRIME" represents a volatile bid to dispel the shadow still cast by LAVETTE's simmering frustration over her stillborn Muscle Shoals-recorded 1972 masterpiece "Child of the Seventies," an album that Atlantic Records maddeningly -- and inexplicably -- shelved before anyone heard it.
LAVETTE's vocals, a richly calculated union of blunt force trauma and unspeakable tenderness, boil over with long-carried need to flout that blow. Using a hand-picked set of titles by a diverse set of writers (from Willie Nelson to Elton John) LAVETTE foments another artistic revolution as she quells an aching personal thwart. Her revelatory, communicative performances confront decades of aggravation and disappointment not with bitterness, but upright defiance. The "THE SCENE OF THE CRIME" equation is enhanced further by contributions from two Muscle Shoals mainstays, keyboardist Spooner Oldham and bassist David Hood (who just happens to be father of Drive By Truckers guitarist Patterson Hood), and the sound achieved -- gritty, restrained, fuzz-gilded, deep soul-rock grooves -- provides ideal support.
The result of this striking convergence is profound, a resonant, emotional conquest of forty five years of hurt and bad memories. LAVETTE is captured in full fury, cementing the promise of 2005's extraordinary "I've Got My Own Hell to Raise," a glorious reintroduction which also re-asserted her as one of America's most forceful and accomplished soul singers. While few were prepared for the hammering ardor of the Detroit soul veteran's approach, the disc was met with high praise ("an album of harrowing beauty," New York Times; "grabs listeners by the shoulders and insists they pay heed," Wall Street Journal) and won LAVETTE a long overdue measure of recognition.
Now, "THE SCENE OF THE CRIME" delivers an even more intimate session with the unrivaled singer. It also underscores the might of the Drive By Truckers, a young band who have been steadily increasing their own cachet. As the LA Times' Ann Powers said of their recent Stagecoach festival appearance, "the Truckers earned the right to a title several artists vied for this weekend: rightful heirs to the legacy of 1960s pioneers the Band." LAVETTE herself said, "To have recorded with Patterson's father all those years ago, and now to have recorded with both of them was singularly unique, and since it didn't happen for me the other time in Muscle Shoals, this was really a relief -- I'm trying to avoid using the word revenge. And it's great to be able to show up with a strong voice and able to fit into a size 6 dress, so, really, the only ones I'm still angry with are those who died -- because they can't see me." This powerful, multi-generational mixture brings a remarkable gravity, and "THE SCENE OF THE CRIME" is a passionately declarative artistic achievement, one that could only have originated with the incomparable BETTYE LAVETTE.
