Title: Celebrity Encounters
Post by: Charlie Nakatestes, Japanese Golfer on May 21, 2008, 02:37:00 pm
My all time list is huge, but I had one today

I was running by the WW2 Memorial, and there was a big crowd and a parade with a bunch of veterans in wheelchairs with lots of cheering.

The crap part was that the parade went right through my running route, and I had to leap between wheelchairs to make it through the parade. As I was leaping, there was an old decrepit looking guy in a suit and fake brown hair no more than three or four feet away.He was shaking hands with one of the wheelchair guys, and said "Congratulations, thank you for your service." After a few seconds of thinking, I realized the old guy was Bob Dole.

I've met a ton of people, some situations more random than others. Here's a list off the top of my head:

 James Earl Jones
 Dolly Parton
 Donovan Leitch
 Charles Durning
 John Mahoney
 Doc Severinsen
 Chevy Chase
 Tom Selleck
 Woody Harrelson
 Carole King
 Danny Glover
 Tiny Tim

I saw Jim Jarmusch carrying groceries in the Bowery.

I saw Rick Ocasek walking down the street in NYC, and was right behind him in line at Newbury Comics in Boston (he has Social D. Sonic Youth and Madonna among his swag).

I saw the Mayor Ed Kock coming out of "The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and Her Lover" with tears in his eyes.

I saw then Mayor David Dinkins pressing the flesh on the street in Staten Island.

I shook hands with River Phoenix and jokingly called him "Christian (as in Slater)".

I saw Jerry Lewis getting out of a limo on Connecticut Ave.

I took a piss next to Jon Langford (is he famous enough?) in a bar (didn't notice if the rumors about his large tool were true)

Sure would have been cool to encounter some famous female hotties, but I can't think of any...except one sort of hottie...

saw Winona Ryder, Daniel Day Lewis, and Martin Scorcese filming the Age of Innocence in upstate NY

saw Winona Ryder and Dave Pirner shoosing away a street vagarant outside a cafe in Baltimore

ran into Evan Dando in a strip mall parking lot prior to and in-store.

Saw Mike Ness strolling around on my college campus on his way to our college radio station

 ok, enough for now

I stood next to Sandra Bullock at a bar and made small talk for a few minutes.

Tucker Carlson gave me an extra concert ticket outside of 9:30 once.

either i don't have any "saw X walking out of a grocery store"-type experiences, or i don't remember them.  maybe i only remember more intense celeb encounters:

 - i knew dave eggers's girlfriend before they started dating, and went to his wedding which was a who's who of modern lit.  david sedaris, zadie smith, nick horny, etc etc.  at one point i was doing shots with two pulitzer prize winners.

 - participated in a small 2-day round-table discussion chaired by Bono.  got to chat a few times with him, he was surprisingly humble and approachable.

george lucas - marin county, ca
 james hetfield - marin county
huey lewis - marin county (went to one of the band members weddings)   :D
the guys in Journey shop at my parents health food store as well as countless other musicians that live in marin.

 whoopi goldberg - sf

gabriel byrne - coming out of the IFC - NYC
and lots of other celebs here

ringo starr - shoe store on Melrose (one of the biggest a$$holes ive ever met)
janeane garafolo - on melrose (shes even worse than ringo)

and friends lived on the same dorm floor at ucsb with gwyneth (she only went there for a year if that). my ex was hit on by her also.

ive become oblivious to it all living in nyc. pretty much everywhere you go, you can see someone. at concerts it can be a 'who's who', depending on which 'it' band is playing.

I got mashed against the bar at the Continental Club in South Austin by Colin Farrell once. Dale Watson was playing. Colin offered to buy me a cocktail by way of apology, but I had just gotten one. So I said no thanks. He was quickly surrounded by plenty of other people who wanted him to buy them drinks though. He was very polite to them too, considering how rude and demanding they were. I'm not a Colin Farrell fan at all. Why couldn't it have been Viggo?

Met Willie Nelson on a golf course.  When I was a kid, we'd collect lost golf balls and re-sell them to the golfers.  He was in the bar/restaurant and he was the nicest guy ever.  Gave us 100 bucks for a sack of crappy golf balls and signed autographs for us.
I'm guessing after-show chats with artists don't count, so I'll stop at this one.

My favorite is David Byrne at Club Charles in Baltimore a few years back.

I also got into a verbal altercation with John Water's props person once (over a mushroom chair), and dressed all the people in Cecil B. Demented (but the only person I remember was Maggie Gyllenhall) for their first scene.  (I was working in the vintage store next door to the filming at the time...)

Could there be any more () in that sentence?

Speaking of John Waters, I just remembered some more:

 John Waters
 Mink Stole
 Selma Blair
 Chris Isaak
 Ahmet Zappa
 Dave Thomas (of Wendy's fame)
 Rob Lowe

What is the Dave Thomas/John Waters connection?

I also saw John Waters a few times when I lived in Baltimore in the 90's.

No connection...I just remembered that I met them, different times. I did go to the cast wrap party for a Dirty Shame and met Waters, Mink Stole, Chris Isaak, Selma Blair, and her then-boyfriend Ahmet Zappa. I wonder if they're still together.

Celebrity encounters are kind of dime a dozen for someone from LA/OC, so I'll list more than just bumping into them or seeing them some place.

I was at Taos in Vegas with Chase Crawford and his sister who was in the Miss America Pageant a few weeks ago.  After the Venetian, he got us a limo and we went to a gentlemans club.

Zach De La Rocha and Vince Vaughn used to be in my fantasy football league.

Gwen Stefani and my sister were good friends growing up and I still see her on occasion.

The Sports Guy and I Are still supposed to watch a United/Tottenham match someday, but I doubt that ever happens.

Scotty Gomez still owes me a drink after a night of partying in NY.

I'm pretty sure I posted this here once before but I once asked Shannen Doherty that if I called her Brenda if would should call me a dick?  She said no, so I called her Brenda and she promptly called me a dick.

Adam Corolla and Jimmy Kimmel used to be regulars at a poker game I used to play in with guys from KROQ in LA.

One of my favorite recent ones has to be Ron Jeremy at the Roxy.

a lot of senators and house members from working on the hill, I would rather forget those experiences

I took a class in college called Oliver Stone's America and he came to our class a couple of times

Andres Gallaraga at the mall right after he broke his arm his only year with the cardinals

Ozzie Smith left a signing when I was 12 years old and was the next person in line, I still dont like him because of that

a lot of musicians like the rest of you, favorite being watching Markie and Poorlulu disappear into a winnebago with Anton Newcombe at 3am outside the velvet lounge and it starts to drive away

 probably forgetting others

oh and Ben Stiller in a bar in new york, he is REALLY short

Mine too now.  I had seen the show once before, but Smackette LOVES the show.  When I texted her that I was partying with Miss Missouri, she immediately knew it was Chase's sister, to which I replied who the hell is Chase Crawford?  Right up until I met him I thought I was meeting Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgely).

He turned out to be a genuinely nice guy, picked up the tab for everything, provided access to all kinds of stuff I could never get into, and did a lot for his adoring fans (and there's a lot of them).  I just sat back in awe of all the young girls he took photos with in Vegas.

I worked at Virgin Megastore in LA for almost a year in the mid-90's so the celeb customer spotting there was a dime a dozen.  Though there were a few highlights like meeting childhood idol Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and providing personal security for Neil Diamond when he did an in-store there (which if you saw me physically back then was a fucking hilarious choice by store management).  Watching all of the other employees shit themselves over douchebag Morrissey coming into the store sporting a Morrissey tee shirt with his picture on it was pretty funny as well.  Oddly enough though I never really saw any celebrities outside of the work setting for the couple years I lived in LA (save running into Gene Simmons at the post office haha).  The funniest celebrity encounter was cornering Paul Stanley last year outside of White Flint Mall after an artshow where he wouldn't take pictures or sign anything for fans unless you paid in upwards of $2-$50K for his artwork so my friend and I took that as a challenge, the off-duty police providing security told us he was going to cut out early so my friend and my half-drunk ass (due to cheap wine courtesy of the Wentworth Gallery) went out by the loading dock and got in between the exit and his Lincoln Town Car there to pick him up and had him take pictures with us when he walked out haha

i've met a lot of random people but this one takes the cake.

was flying back to Kansas from the east coast, and I had been bumped off like 3 flights, so they finally stuck me on one, and put me first class.

I'm all "yey" and curl up in my chair with my new book.

Person comes in, sits next to me, orders a drink what have you. Looks over at me.

"So what book are you reading?"
"oh, Marilyn Manson's book, it's pretty neat" (at this point I hadn't looked over yet, I was really engrossed in it)

Plane takes off. guy gets his drink. about 2 minutes later:

"So what do you like about it?"
"oh, well, it's well written, i like the opinionated thoughts.." finally pull my head out of the book and my face goes white.
"Yeah, I'm glad you like it. Want me to sign it?"

So for 2.5 hours i got to sit by Marilyn Manson and talk about his book and literature and stuff.

 was fucking awesome. lol.

aside from that I've met an absolute shitton of celebrities, but I don't know I have better stories than this one.

There's been quite a few for me but a couple of funny ones. ...

I was at the DMV in Arlington and the que was eff'n enormous. There were a couple of young girls about two spots in front of me, and a bloke in front of them. They were whispering and giggling so this bloke turns around and says, "Yes, it's me"....it was Dave Grohl.

I was in the bathroom at National Airport and there were two other blokes taking a pee....I hear one guy say "I didn't kill my wife" and the other turns to him and says "I don't care"...the bloke who said "I don't care" was Harrison Ford. It took me a while to get the humour in the exchange of words until someone explained to me about The Fugitive.

I also met Tico Torres in the mens room so we had a little chat..what's up with me, celebs and mens rooms???       I'll have nightmares of meeting George Michael in a mens room now....

Wide something I'm sure...

I just thought of another from years ago..

When I served in the Royal Navy I was on HMS Brazen and Prince Andrew was our helicopter pilot. The ship came into Baltimore on the way home from the Falkland Islands. We docked right up in the inner harbour across from Phillips. The crowd was enormous with flags and stuff waving all over the place. We were standing in procedure alpha which is when the ships crew stand up on deck all ceremonial in our cutesy sailor suits. I was stood right next to Prince Andrew up on the signal deck. He leaned over and said jokingly to me "see all those women out there...well they're ALL waiting to see me' so I replied "and if there's any snipers out there, so are they" his reply?   "bastard"

Geez, I just realized...I hope certain mods aren't friends with Herman Cain.
