Does anyone "objectively" like this band's most recent cd.  I heard a lot about them, saw the BC show listings, bought the cd, listened to it about 10 times straight through, at that point determined I wouldn't be anywhere close to the BC during the shows (hair appt., cosby reruns, etc.), don't even know where the cd is at this time.  Honestly don't know anything about this band beyond their most recent release and figure... "must be missin' somethin' here"... so what is it?

yeah, i've know about this show since it was announced. i guess i've got to really like a band if i'm gonna get tickets months before the show. i enjoyed "oh inverted world," but not crazy about it. they seem like they're put on a good show though.

Now that their popularity seems to be that of Creed or Foo Fighters, it's like sort of cool if you don't know who they are. No clue who they are. I will visit allmusic.com to see what they sound like.

You are a dope. Both of their albums are two of the best things to hit the music world in this century.

You are a dope. You wouldn't like them, they don't sound like the Pixies or have stupid beards and truckers hats like Granddaddy.

The Shins sell out two nights at the 600-capacity Black Cat and that means they are on a par with the 20-million-selling Creed and the every-album-has-gone-platinum Foo Fighters?

I've never been big on GBV, but the greatest hits album they released last year has become a regular denizen in my CD player.

Just kidding - I like them.
That was intended as a jab @ Barcelona who seems to express this anti GBV sentiment quite often.

I think we all knew these shows would sell out. I'm going both nights...I really like both records and I think there's potential for them to be a good live band. We'll see! At $12 for a ticket, it was a price hard not to beat.

Did someone mention Grandaddy? They're coming back to the club with Saves the Day I think. Mmmmmm...Burtch. YUM.

Of course these shows were going to sell out.

You have a popular band that has not played in the area in a long, long time. Just like the Old 97's, that's an indicator that the interest level is high.

You have a band that whose press goes much further than the 50 hipster dufuses that live in the DC metro area.

And you have people selfish enough to buy tickets for two nights (even though they knew it would prevent others from seeing the band) for a band that only has 70 minutes of recorded material and doesn't play covers...people who are for some reason desperate enough to see the same band do the same exact songs two nights in a row.

Didn't surprise me one bit.  ;)

I think it's unfair to call people selfish just because they want to see a band 2 nights in a row. Why shouldn't we go 2 nights in a row if we want to? We're the kind of people that the band likes to see because we're there to enjoy the music instead of "check out the band" while we smoke cigarettes, get drunk, and then talk to our buddy about how much it sucks. And seeing a band 2 nights in a row beats having to travel to more than one city to see a band I really like. Tickets were $12, a relative bargain these days...why wouldn't it sell out? A band makes a great record that gets praise from critics and fans alike, then embarks on a tour of smaller venues to promote it. This isn't rocket science. If you really want to go to the concert, then get off your ass and buy a ticket like the rest of us. But don't call us selfish for doing it.

just the fact that they are playing 2 nights should tell you that its going to sell out. or be close at least

-unselfish bastard, going ONE night.

I can see going to see a band two nights in a row at the same venue if it's likely that they have enough material to pull off two very different shows. Seeing the Shins two nights in a row at the same venue just seems like a waste of time and money. But I guess we're all wasteful in our own special way.  :)

Going from Pollards previous posts though, I'm guessing it was made tongue in cheek.

You never know when a band is going to have an off night...a buddy of mine was doing sound for PJ Harvey and so I went to see her when she opened for U2. So I saw U2 and thought the show was VERY lackluster...PJ blew them off the stage. Then they came to DC and U2's show was much better. So I'm glad to be going to both nights of the Shins. They may switch the order of the setlist or do something interesting, you just never know. Guess I'm just a "selfish" bastard! But then again, I'd like to think I'm just an avid music fan...that's the whole point why any of us are here. I'm sure that any number of our actions in our day-to-day lives can be interpreted as "selfish". I just prefer not to accuse strangers of it and instead keep it to myself.

To delve deeply into selling out is an exciting adventure. In depth analysis of selling out can be an enriching experience. While it is becoming a hot topic for debate, several of todays most brilliant minds seem incapable of recognising its increasing relevance to understanding future generations. It is estimated that that selling out is thought about eight times every day by those politicaly minded individuals living in the past, obviously. Complex though it is I shall now attempt to provide an exaustive report on selling out and its numerous 'industries'.

 Social Factors

Society begins and ends with selling out. When Thucictholous said 'people only know one thing' [1] he globalised an issue which had remained buried in the hearts of our ancestors for centuries. While the western world use a knife and fork, the Chinese use chopsticks. Of course selling out is quite good.

Did I mention how lovely selling out is? Society says that every man must find their own truth. While one sees selling out, another may see monkeys playing tennis.

 Economic Factors

Increasingly economic growth and innovation are being attributed to selling out. We will begin by looking at the Maiden-Tuesday-Lending model, a classic economic system of analysis.

 Cost Of Living
   <img src="http://radioworldwide.gospelcom.net/essaygenerator/images/graph_up_3.gif" alt=" - " />
 Selling Out

How do we explain these clear trends? It goes with out saying that the cost of living, ultimately decided by politicians, will always be heavily influenced by selling out due to its consistently high profile in the portfolio of investors. Perhaps to coin a phrase selling outeconomics will be the buzz word of the century

 Political Factors

Politics - smolitics! Contrasting the numerous political activists campaigning for the interests of selling out can be like looking at selling out and ones own image of themselves.

Let us consider the words of that silver tongued orator, the star of stage and screen Vatusia Rock 'You can lead a horse to water, big deal.' [2] Primarily, he is referring to selling out. It would be wise to approach the subject with the thought that 'if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all'. However this can lead to missing out important facts.

Why did selling out cross the road? - To get to the other side! Just my little joke, but lets hope that selling out doesn't inspire similar hilarity in the next elections.
 Conclusion

How much responsibility lies with selling out? We can say that selling out plays a large part in the lives of all. It establishes order, provides financial security and it is human.

What a great essay. Finally a word from super-star Stevie Paltrow: 'I love selling out? Yes! Hurray for selling out!' [3]

Good point that some people buying tickets for both nights, puts others into a bind. But, others need to get on the ball, and get tickets quickly for the reasons you state. Sometimes seeing a band two nights in a row, is not a waste -- never know what will happen, how they will sound, set list can change, crowd dynamics, etc. Just depends on what you are looking for and how much you want to see someone.

Would you have gone to see Old 97's had they played the club two nights in a row?

All this two nights in a row crap is just bollocks,

Still abuzz from the Old 97s show last week, I think I may have mentioned to someone that I would want to see them play again...however, upon further contemplation, I'd have to say NO...

I couldn't take two nights being out so late and being buffeted around by a bunch of fat, drunk Baltimorons...

 Crowds suck...
Title: Re: the shins sold out???
Post by: Charlie Nakatestes, Japanese Golfer on January 28, 2004, 03:56:00 pm
If the Shins wanted to come over to my house and play a show for me two nights in a row, I'd be glad to have them. They could even do the same songs for all I care.

It's putting up with the crush of the crowd, the stench of their ciggies, the obnoxiousness of the occasional drunk, and the ridiculously late hours that band play that contribute to the diminished pleasure of seeing the same band two nights in a row. I'll put up with all of that crap for one night if I like the band enough, but it's not that pleasureable of an experience to do it two nights in a row.

LOL...OK...well, your preference is not to go 2 nights in a row. My preference is. Nobody is right or wrong on that. I just think it's kind of funny that people that go 2 nights in a row are being selfish. Personally, I can dig a crowded show if the crowd is well-behaved and into the music. Belle and Sebastian and PJ Harvey at the Black Cat were both packed, but BOY were those reverent crowds. You could hear a pin drop. And they were fantastic shows. I was almost a little sad when they were over...it was like a rollercoaster, I wanted to do it again. I still get that excitement from seeing a really great performance.

I said people who bought tickets for both nights knowing it would sell out and prevent others from seeing it committed a selfish act.

I never said that being selfish would prevent me from committing said act.

    I never said selfish=wrong. I believe I said:

Sorry, but I found the perpetual "point scoring" and appearing considerate to be rather laughable when it was clearly personal reasons, not the greater, good keeping Unctuous from the second night.

There are only a few things worth staying up past midnight for, and most rock shows aren't one of them.    ;)

Going to bed early runs in the family for me.

And yes, I dislike most, but not all, people in the world.

People generally need about 8 hours of sleep, so it's understandable that one may not want to stay up past midnight, unless they have no obligations to do anything the next day until well after 9 am (factoring in an hour to get up and get ready, and that is conservative, because it doesn't take into consideration getting home from a show, and the show even ending at midnight.)

Unfortunately, at many shows, most people ARE problematic. At least in cities that still allow smoking at venues. People who smoke dirty the air and poison those who don't. Additionally, many people insist on talking and not respecting the personal space of other concert goers. When people don't smoke and respect others around them, I'm sure Rhett has no problem with them.

I was at that PJ Harvey show (December 2000?) and agree about the great, receptive crowd. That was my first time at the (old) Black Cat, so I didn't know what to expect. Wish more shows were like that one.

Belle and Sebastian and PJ Harvey at the Black Cat were both packed, but BOY were those reverent crowds. You could hear a pin drop.

Yeah, that PJ show was fantastic...she asked that the audience not smoke, but I'm not sure that would have made Rhett happy, LOL. She rocks. I know the guy that does sound for her, I'm hoping that she will make it to Coachella. It would be so fun to see her onstage with Queens of the Stone Age doing Desert Sessions stuff. Now THAT would be something to see. I booked my plane ticket and hotel...now I hope I can just get tickets to both days. The Pixies could do an entire show of B-sides and covers and that would still be worth the trip for me.

For the record (see below), the Old 97's back to back shows in NYC had completely different setlists, so you're paying for a completely different show. With the Shins, that's highly doubtful.

 Sat 1/24/04
 What I Wouldn't Do/Barrier Reef/Lonely Holiday/W. Texas Teardrops/ Rollerskate
 Skinny/Salome/ Singular Girl/ Smokers/ Coahuila/ Doreen/Wish The Worst/Up The
 Devil's Pay/Designs on You/Valium Waltz/Won't Be Home No More/Crash on the
 Barrelhead/Murder (Or A Heart Attack)/ Four-Leaf Clover// encore 1: Come Around
(Rhett solo)/ Our Love (Rhett  solo)/ Valentine (Murry and Rhett)/ Broadway/
 Dressing Room Walls/ Big Brown Eyes// encore 2: Stoned/Timebomb

 Sun 1/25/04
 Hands Off/ Rollerskate Skinny/ Buick City Complex/ W. Texas Teardrops/ Jagged/
 King of All The World/ Just Like California/ Smokers/ Coahuila/ 504/ Old
Familiar Steam/ Crash on the Barrelhead/ Indefinitely/ Blinding Sheets of Rain/
The New Kid/ Mama Tried/ Murder (Or A Heart Attack)/ If My Heart Was a Car//
encore 1: 4-Eyed Girl (Rhett solo)/ Come Around (Rhett solo)/ Valentine (Murry

 I'll Cry Instead/ Timebomb

Would you have gone to see Old 97's had they played the club two nights in a row?

Ok it's been established that the Shins are sold out... Good luck to all of the people trying to get extra tickets.

That review is pretty accurate. From the two times I've seen them, the Shins have been a good, but not a great live band.

The keyboard player is downright fucking annoying. Criminal that he's the one dating the model given that he's chubby, ugly, and incredibly annoying whereas James and the guitar guy seem to be much better catches.

I was only teasing you, as I figured you like the Old 97's so much you might go see them two nights in a row. I was simply pointing out that some people like to see a band they really like two nights in a row. Despite the crowd and going out late two nights in a row.  Who cares if the set list is repeated or not. As someone else mentioned, I listen to cds I like over and over again...
Title: Re: the shins sold out???

But is the cd comparison really valid? You're not really investing all of your senses and time listening to a cd two nights in a row, like you are with a concert.

A more apt comparison would be: Would you go to the same play at the same theater two nights in a row? Perhaps some people would, but I wouldn't. And particularly if I knew it would prevent others from seeing the show.

The thought that it was "selfish" to buy tickets for both shows was actually my wife's, not mine. A lot of the controversial things I say on this board are just me repeating things she has said at home.

So you will have to dub her the sacrimonious and unctuous one, whatever those pretentious twenty dollar words are. Me, I'm simply a thief. Hail to the thief.

first of all, why the hell are you quoting the Bible to me? I am totally a humanist so that is basically like quoting some kinda folkloric thing...nice, but irrelevant...

Like, who isn't, dude...

Anyway, ask the delightful Ms. Bags about letting sleeping dogs lie. The thread had rightly turned back to the Shins, but she had to fly in on her gas-guzzling, gold-plated broomstick and put in her two cents a day late. I'm bored at work at the moment and felt it was appropriate that I point out other sanctimoniousness on the board of others, particularly the most accusing of the bunch. I'll stop now, since you sort of asked nicely, in a round about way...
