sorry no link, stern is gone for good nationwide, i woke up to be greeted by clay atken singing invinceable...fucking nightmare, bastards, i hope your happy mankie
-
Check the date!
-
bungle, I woke up at exactly the same time as you...to Clay friggin' Aiken. And then those two jocks -- Cross & Lopez, "fun without the filth." Did you listen long enough to hear Tom Chiusano's statement that Infinity and its parent Viacom could no longer keep Stern on under the FCC threats?
BRILLIANT.
About 10 minutes in, I realized it's April 1. Apparently it lasted the first hour and 15 minutes of the show. Howard should have taken the day off and left Cross and Lopez on ALL day so that fans, listeners, advertisers, etc., would understand what it is to have no Howard and get more incensed about doing something.
Howard haters, no reason to chime in. You don't listen anyway. And that's why radios have on/off buttons and many different channels.

Exactly the reason I don't give a rats what happens to the wanker....on or off the air it makes no difference to me because I have an off and tune button on my radio. I never said nobody should be allowed to listen to him, I simply said I don't find him in the slightest bit funny, very offensive many times and can't understand why he gets (or got) away with stuff when other jocks had their careers destroyed for much less.
-
Missed it, but that is brilliant!

But he demeans people who are desperate to be famous, who often have no talent and big fake tits. I like a laugh at their expense.
It probably just means I am a msogynist, but plenty of women seem to enjoy the show. Possibly because they hate that type of vaccuous woman?
Why do the women of the board like Howard?

Like I've said many times...each to their own.

Man, that was random. I find it interesting to see whether a person refers to it as the Death Cab show or the Kweller show....
Markie, to answer your question, I get bored with the strippers and fart bits. However, as an example I have to admit I LOVED the stripper game that HOWARD originated years ago as the homeless game and Jay Leno stole -- when he'd quiz strippers on general knowledge and they didn't know sh*t. He's also done it with celebrities, two of the most memorable for me being Joe Millionaire (who thought 12 times 12 was 24) and Tori Spelling (who said the capitol of New York is New Jersey).
When there are fart bits, I turn it off.
But 70% of the show is Howard talking with his Robyn, Artie, Gary, etc. just about life, the news, intra-office politics (the workplace stuff is the best). And they're all really honest, I've gotten to know their personalities and quirks, and Howard is really very reasonable on a lot of things.
And, his celebrity interviews are stellar, just incredible. There's a reason papers and magazines are constantly 'reporting' news that came from Stern interviews.
Because of all this, I'm not bothered by the naked chicks, just bored with it.

even if you don't like him you have to want him to stay on, we can't let the bastards win. i dont want a movie rated r because there is smoking or curse words bleeped out like bitch, or crapp, or sex. a few shakespear books are already banned in skols and no howard in the morning sux.
"violence is okay as long as they don't use naughty words." or sexual images (like bikinis, sex and dancing)
i already wrote to some congress person....and i'm sure that they dont give a flying fuck, no money was in the envelope. but i did lie about age and sex etc....so they would maybe not trash it right away.....
SHIZZLE THE FIIZZLE UP FLAWDIZZLE!!!

I would twist that a little bit:
Even if you don't like him you want him not to go off the air because of censorship.
I don't like him and I'd like him off the air, but that's why I don't listen. I don't want Big Brother to take him off the air, I just want him to be forced off by tasteful, intelligent listeners changing the channel.

Oh my god. Grow some balls. I can not for the life of me imagine Stern really offending anyone that much.

on the contrary, I think Stern is amazingly offensive, and I know plenty of women (and men) who don't think "growing some balls" is the solution to misogyny in the entertainment industry...that being said, I'll be damn sure to fight for his right to speak freely â?? I just don't think he's funny.
p.s. Bungle, you missed a good subject heading...Howard's End?

Oh, I've got a strange story about him.
When I was growing up, the first house I lived in was across the street from an elementary school that has lots and lots of great playgrounds and fields. I've always been one of those people who love to just sit and gaze out the window. Well, this one day I spotted some guy on the blacktop by the school. Didn't recognize this boy but I'd say he was about 12 or 13, sort of tallish and a bit overweight.
As a window gazer, I focused my attention on this lone boy just as he broke in to some bad yet very flamboyant ballet moves. That's when my eyes went  and I knew that I had found some quality bad taste entertainment. Said boy was leaping and twirling all over the place having no clue whatsoever that he had an audience with a box seat up in the rafters.
Having a love of the absurd, I got a big kick out of this poor soul's attempt at flying free with all the space and thinking no one was around. My own personal witnessing of the the Star Wars light sabre guy ballet.
A few minutes later, some of his friends came barreling around the corner, some on bicycles. The poor embarrased boy dropped and shriviled right out of the middle of a flying leap in pure humilation. That alone was funny but it gets even funnier.
The friends chatted with him for a moment and then the entire gang hauled ass off around the corner again with Ballet Boy in tow. Of course, I was disappointed that my free show had been interrupted until I saw where they were going. They all ran up to a black van that was very much like many ice cream vans that have an opening on the side. As they get to the van, I notice that who is in this van but Professor Kool. I have no idea what was going on but this was a very strange surprise to me after such a great comedy act on the sly.

Umm... I don't care if people "offend" me. I do care if they take up the *publicly owned* airwaves with meaninless drivel, misogyny, and lower the bar for "entertainment." Really.
Because the airwaves belong to us, all broadcasters must prove that they are using them for the "common good." You'd be hard pressed to prove that Howard is art, or political commentary, or enlightening, or anything but, well, common.
Not to be all uppidy... I again repeat that I'm against censorship and don't think he should be forced off the air by anything but a lack of listenership. But I do think it's time for us to start demanding better than fart jokes and people eating raw cow brains. I do think it's bad for our culture and our society, but I think we all need to wake up and demand better, not have someone impose it on us.

In fairness, I wrote the post that you are referring to, not allmy$tothe930. I was on his computer at the time. Please excuse the rather blunt point I made, it was the end of the long day, and I realise that I came off as a bit of a dick. Sorry.
Anyway, who would be responsible for defining "meaningless drivel", or for that matter, the "common good". I would submit that Howard is a good interviewer who plays a character on the radio, just like O'Reilly, the awful Don and Mike, Franken, and Rush. I think the medium encourages extreme opinions because it attracts viewers.
To restrict radio to political commentary, news, "public good" programming (whatever that means), music, and art would only serve to make the medium less interesting. As Mankie said, you can always change the channel.

I'm not quite sure what the deal was, but when Howard Stern was in DC, he bailed one of my Mom's friend's out of jail.

chimbley, Howard's number one in all his markets (I believe - the majority definitely, so I won't swear to all 30-something markets; number 1 in all the majors). I think that says pretty plainly that he passes any 'community standards' tests and is serving a community desire.
This common good issue you bring up is...problematic, to say the least. Outside of NPR and various traffic reports, who's going to be able to prove this standard, who will judge it, why is that a prerequisite for entertainment? Is a large public response not proof that something is entertaining? If it's not pornography, how are you going to censor "drivel"?
Why can't you just listen to NPR?
By the way, since they're my airwaves, can I have Rush and O'Reilly taken off? They speak lies, drivel and are not interested in the common good but their version of good, which is my version of bad, bad, bad.
-edit-
keith, didn't see your post when I posted this. Got caught up and had to answer myself.... ;)
-
Again, I'm not saying we should enforce the "common good" standard, just that it's always interesting food for thought, in light of the use of public facilities.
And for the third time, I believe censorship is fucking unamerican. I think market forces are the only thing that should knock these dickwads off the air.

Chimbley, we agree! Sorry, the post I responded to didn't sound like it...
But seriously, can I exert some kind of ownership rights over the airwaves and get Rush off? :D

Well, if you say something like all broadcasters MUST prove that they work toward the "common good", then to me it seems that you are suggesting that a "common good" standard be enforced.

NO NO NO! Never take Rush off. I love hearing him make a complete horses arse of himself. Him and minime Rush, Shaun Hannity.

Chimbley, my wife and i were wondering: are you a chick or are you a dude?
She insists that you must be a chick, I say a dude...I usually just assume everyone on here is a dude unless they deliberately indicate otherwise.

Actually, it is. Every time you apply or reapply for an FCC license to broadcast on the airwaves, you have to prove common good, and you need testimony to prove it.
In fact, Fox 5 here in DC is up for renewal of their FCC license right now.

I like listening to Howard every once and a while, although the strippers/lesbian/porn star thing grows old real fast - I really enjoy the news, and general interviews.
The funny thing is that my phone number at work is only a couple of digits off of a MA senator's office. Within the last 2-3 weeks I have been receiving calls/voice mail from persons expressing their concerns about the protection of free speech and the occasional "HOWARD RULES!!!" call. I find no problem in saying that they do not sound like the brightest of constituents, but then I stop and say - "Ooops, I also listen to Howard." :o Oh well!!
