Although I am repeatedly more excited about Black Cat shows, I have to say the 9:30 staph is far better. Another night at the black cat has proven to me that their staff are supreme assholes, so thank you to the 9:30 staph again, great job.

pollard
i love you, don't let the glass collectors and floor sweeper uppers get you down........
lets go puke in their bathrooms, pass out in their vacinity, or just be general assholes sometime soon.............
your round by the way :p

thank you

yes, i love the 930 staph....they have always been nice and funny. and saved me from kicking crowd surfers. i wish i could buy a card or something.....
they look like athletes or american gladitors when they come in...they have there bag, dressed cool, then act all taking care of business going in. i luv it....probaly cuz i have no life.
me and my friend have even named a few.....(but never told them)
there is "frizbe" or "bubbles" if he looks angry....
"sparky"
"burns" (cuz of a picture)
"dreads" (my friend named one....)
and "guy who gets in all my fucking pictures"
then "black dude"
(not being racist, just cant come up with a name...
and others i havent named yet...i wish they were action figures that had karate chop action.

all the people who work at the Black Cat are good people, and can be forgiven for getting a little cranky when things happen like patrons putting pint glasses into toilets, something I observed last night -- couldn't help feel sorry for whatever poor sap eventually had to fish that out.

Staph? Am I missing the joke? I've seen that spelling numerous times on this board. Isn't staph something like an infection?
-
Yeah, Doom, the ladie's room (and I say that loosely) was a pit as well last night. Those whacked out Depeche Mode fans...broken glasses, paper towels clogging up toilets. Ick.
That said, the bartender was very nice to me, but the busboy was a shit. I won't doubt Pollard's word -- he's no Markie or Lulu, stirring up trouble for the fun of it! [Doom looks like a mess of trouble as well, but I've got no anecdotes to back that up yet...]

black cat: gets superior bands for my taste
930: far superior venue in almost every other way.

I might be wrong, but I would say most of the bands the black cat signs up couldn't fill 1/3 of the 930 club. The 930 is a business after all so is going to sign a band with a draw large enough to make it worthwhile opening the doors.
-
totally right. i'm not saying the 930 should start booking les savy fav or anything, just saying that's why i go to the black cat more.
-
the Black Cat is a real club whereas the 9:30 club is, as you said, a "venue." 930 clears you out after the show, whereas the Black Cat is also a place you can hang out, have a drink, play pinball, dance, and get a meal. (Yeah I know the 930 has its basement bar, but it's tiny.) Rather than trying to debate which is better, just be glad we've got both of them, they both fill valuable and different needs.

staph is the unofficial official club spelling.

maybe the black cat lets you hang out before but the last time i was there, the band had just finished and was out talking to fans and the staff started kicking people out...the bartender was pretty nice to me but hands down the 9:30 staph is the best :D sometimes i'll go with my friend to a show that i'm not really into but the staph makes up for it...
-
In the upstairs room the black cat usually tries to get people out after the show, and down to the bar. The 9:30 has the basement bar that often is used the same way.
-
Since we are on the topic of the two clubs...I know this has been said before -and it doesn't affect me since I'm over 21- but I would like to take this opportunity to thank both the 9:30 Club and Black Cat for remaining all ages venues. I was at a show recently, and a 12 year old boy was standing next to me with a young friend. Their awe, respect, and excitement for the show was truly special to see.
-
9:30 is by far the best venue I've ever been to, but both 9:30 and Black Cat staff are much better than any club in NYC and Long Island, with the possible exception of the Knitting Factory.
