Title: from frankblack.net
Post by: brennser on February 03, 2004, 11:21:00 am
This is it folks - we have the Official Wordâ?˘ on the Pixies Reunion!

The group is indeed reforming, and they'll be doing a 'warm-up' tour beginning in April that will lead up to the much-anticipated Coachella festival. Touring will continue afterwards, through the US and Canada. It is a safe bet Europe will follow. Of course, you can expect to see the dates and locations as soon as we know.

From NME.com (http://www.nme.com/news/107414.htm):

PIXIES TO REUNITE FOR TOUR - OFFICIAL!

PIXIES have officially confirmed they are to reunite for a full tour this year.

The indie legends, who split in 1993, had already been announced as one of the acts at this year's Coachella festival in California, where they will appear on May 1.

Speculation has been rife for months now that the band would be playing more shows in 2004, and now a spokesperson for the band has revealed that more shows will be taking place, and are due to be confirmed imminently.

He said: "For a long time, it was far from certain that this would actually happen. However, you may be interested to learn that, at last, the reunion has been confirmed. The band are holding a press conference in Los Angeles today (February 3), and their booking agents have been confirming shows with promoters over the last few days."

The band are expected to play some warm-up shows in Canada before they appear at the Coachella bash. They will go on to visit Europe, with a host of festival appearances planned - slots at the UK's V Festival, T In The Park and Glastonbury are strongly rumoured. The band are also thought to have a number of indooor shows pencilled in, including two nights at London Brixton Academy, as well as a support slot on Red Hot Chili Peppers' summer European tour.

What is definite is that the band's former label 4AD are to release a 'best of' album and DVD sometime this year. The DVD will feature eight Pixies videos, a 1988 concert taped at London's Town And Country Club and the documentary 'Gouge', which features interviews with Radiohead's Thom Yorke, David Bowie and Bono.

Warm-up tour? Can you even imagine if they played the 9:30? OMG...that would be unreal.

If this was true, I would think about following them through the US and Europe.

Isn't it really Kim and Frank being together again as the rest have played with Frank over the years.  Joey rules!

I'm listening to "Rock Music" right now. The first concert I ever saw was the Pixies with My Dad is Dead at the Riviera in Chicago, December 3, 1990. To this day, I have never seen band come out on stage the way the Pixies did. They had a curtain up and all the lights went out...the place went nuts and they started playing "Cecilia Ann" behind the curtain. Everyone was just going insane...even back then I think everyone knew this band was special. By the time the song was done, the curtain fell down and they were blazing through "Rock Music". The show was insane...they were flying through songs and were in the middle of "There Goes My Gun" when everything went black...lights, sound, power...all gone. Some idiot predicted an earthquake to hit the midwest that day, and my sister FREAKED...she threw me against the wall and was screaming...I managed to see Black Francis through the darkness. He threw down his guitar and stormed off the stage. A couple of minutes later, they came back as if nothing happened. They played about 2/3 of their songbook, and it was a night I will never forget. I saw them less than a year later at the Citadel Center here in DC...the DJ was playing this horrid polka music before they went on and then finally the Pixies came out...the stage was filled with smoke and they set off strobes that looked like lightning while the sound of thunder rolled on the PA. It was so incredible...and they launched right into the slow version of "Wave of Mutilation". If they play "Where is My Mind" I will just fucking lose it...this band for me still is the ultimate. Husker Du is up there as well. This is such phenomenal news.  :)

Where do you guys think they'd play their DC show?

The Pixies are one band that I've always really regretted not seeing.

The Pixes most def take me back to some good times....once(way back when I still indulged in such things) a friend and I stayed up all night on acid and just listened to "Here Comes Your Man" over and over for at least an hour....just marvelling at what a perfect little pop creation it is.  OK, guess you had to be there....

Methinks you're right...a better venue would be Bender Arena at AU though. But if they tour with a respectable supporting band, it could even be the Patriot Center. It would be nice if they just did 2 nights at the 9:30 though.

I think the Pixies will be one of those $40 9:30 Club shows. Sure, they are "indie legends" (whatever that is) but I don't think mainstream America is familiar with them, and their appeal is limited to music nerds like us.

If the Sex Pistols are a 9:30 Club show, the Pixies defintely are as well.

Good point Rutherford...I guess ultimately it's up to the band. That's probably why they're considering a tour with the Chili Peppers. If they headline, it will probably be a 2-night stand at the 9:30 and tickets will be expensive. But hey, I'd rather pay $40 to see them at the 9:30 than $25 to see them at the Patriot Center. Even back in 1990 I think it was $23 to see them. And that was before ticket prices gouged away (sorry, bad joke).

In '89,I got my two tickets and backstage passes from some girl with blue hair for free. The ticket price was like 8 pounds each (~$12 back then).

Are you telling me that Pixies tickets were more expensive on this side of the pond?

I would imagine they will do clubs as well as a big tour with them. It might not cover every single city, but I would bet that the demand is there. It's been 12 years since their last tour. But given how disastrous it was for them opening U2's Zoo TV tour, I would be stunned if they went ahead and opened for the Peppers.

didn't read the NME article; only read this and thought the RHCP tour was in the states.  My bad.  Throw me off the board.  I should probably go anyway; not a Pixies fan.  [But am more confused that I'm not than that other folks are...]

I don't care if it's not as good as back in the day...X were better this past time around than they were in the mid-80's, and Iggy is about 300 years old and still kicking ass. Here's to the Pixies, may they prove cynics wrong! ;-)

ticket prices are generally cheaper in europe than in the us. when i was in italy, it seemed to be about 20% less(and taking in for currency exchange rates) than in the us and when my sister lived in england, my $40 tickets in boston were always more.

however, now with the euro as the currency, i'm not quite sure if ticket prices have risen.

bungle bud, barcelona, can either of you comment?

Sonic Youth in Rome in summer of 2002 was 20 Euro (then approx. 20 bucks). Didn't they charge $25 here?

I think the relevant comparison would be ticket prices in London vs. DC. Not that it really matters. People obviously are going to pay whatever, and this will be a financially successful venture for the Pixies.

There was the time I met Kim when she was coming out of Steve Albini's house (he was my neighbor in Chicago) and she told me she hadn't brushed her teeth in 3 days (TMI). Then she dropped the master tapes for the Amps' "Pacer" in the gutter. Kelly was there too, clearly going through some severe heroin withdrawl. She was rocking herself back and forth on the curb, looking very pale and sick. That Amps record was basically a Breeders record, without Josephine. Jim McPherson was there too. I was back in Chicago on my spring break, I got them to sign my Breeders and Pixies stuff which was cool.

After a Breeders show in Barcelona in 1994, Kim Deal drew Shane MacGowan's face in my t-shirt. She was really nice.

The Amps's shows in Spain were some of the best shows I have been to.

nice to see so many pixies groupies - myself and some friends bumped into the band before a gig at the national stadium in dublin (a very fancy name for a boxing venue with a capacity of maybe 1,200)

Kim was very nice - my friend asked her to sign the back of his shirt - she even asked if Steven was spelt with a v or a ph - when he took it off she's written "Fuck you Steven, Love Kim"....it was the greatest day of his life!

One other Kim memory - about 15 minutes into the gig everyone is going absolutely mental and Kim steps up to the mic and says, "So we're going up to Belfast tomorrow, should we bring machine guns?" I've NEVER heard a crowded arena go so quiet so quickly.....

well the good news (for me anyway) is that the pixies have confirmed a show in dublin this summer. the bad news is that it's supporting the chilli peppers in the phoenix park (outdoor, capacity around 80-100,000). will still be there after forking out â?¬65 (nearly $80) a ticket but i can foresee a major dash to the beer tent once the pixies finish up.

After listening to them quite a bit on FRED, they are growing on me again. When I heard them played the first few times I thought to myself, "Hmmmmm, not as great as I remembered them" but that is beginning to change.

From Billboard.com (http://www.billboard.com/bb/daily/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=2083376):

Quote
As first reported here yesterday, legendary modern rock act the Pixies are in a Southern California rehearsal space preparing to reunite for the first time since 1993. Billboard.com can reveal that the group will hit the road in April for an 11-city warm-up tour of North America, concluding with a previously confirmed May 1 appearance at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, Calif.

From there, the quartet of guitarist/vocalist Frank Black, bassist/vocalist Kim Deal, guitarist Joey Santiago and drummer David Lovering will head to Europe for a tour that will run from May 28 to July 10. The only confirmed dates at present are support slots for the Red Hot Chili Peppers on June 12 at Dublin's Phoenix Park and June 15 at Paris' Parc des Princes.

Additional details have also come to light regarding the upcoming retrospective and DVD releases first reported here in December. 4AD/Beggars Banquet will issue a 23-track best-of with the working title "Wave of Mutilation -- Best of the Pixies," featuring such classics as "Gigantic," "Dig for Fire," "Monkey Gone to Heaven," "Here Comes Your Man" and a remix of "Debaser."

The DVD, simply titled "Pixies," will feature music videos for "Debaser," "Alec Eiffel," "Here Comes Your Man," Velouria," "Monkey Gone to Heaven," "Dig For Fire/Allison" and "Head On," a 1988 concert from London's Town and Country Club and the documentary "Gouge," sporting testimonials from Bono, David Bowie and Radiohead's Thom Yorke.

While Black has enjoyed a prolific solo career since the Pixies' demise, Deal has released music infrequently with the Amps and the Breeders and Lovering has spent the six years working as a professional magician. "I'd given up drums for a long time," the drummer told Billboard.com last week. "I haven't played them in years and years. It would just be fun to do it again. We just have fun playing."

Amid all the Pixies-related activity, Black will release a double-disc solo album, "Frank Black Francis," in April or May via spinART.

Gotta say this is what I love about this band...who the HELL saw those dates coming? Frustrating yes...but what can you do? I think it's hilarious. I'd try to go to one of those dates warm-up dates, but given that I'll have to get on a plane later to get to Coachella, I'm not sure I'll make it. But I'll have to see what I can work out.

I'd be patient....they'll announce a whole slew of other dates.  The first round of "pre-Coachella" dates is dribbling out.  I recommend planning to hit one of these shows only if you're one of the folks planning to see them four or five times during the reunion tour....
