Title: Anyone need manual labor workers????
Post by: bull930 on March 27, 2007, 12:08:00 am
I went past Rhode Island Ave today and saw alot of hispanics outside by the Home Depot. I think they are manual labor workers looking for a job. If you need to get your house painted or some work done....stop by!

A guy knocked on our door at 10 am Sunday morning asking if we needed any yardword done. 10 in the morning on a Sunday. Talk about freaking rude.

Maybe they were a mariachi band.

Or maybe they were Tony Stewart fans. NASCAR has been trying to get Hispanics to tune in.

In the District, Latino advocates say the Home Depot is the largest day-labor site since one of two paint stores closed at 15th and P streets NW. During the summer, residents say they have seen as many as 200 day laborers at the Home Depot. Residents say police have not acted on their complaints about loitering because the parking lot is private property.

Someone I know went and picked up a day laborer from Home Depot. He bought some green paint and told him to paint his porch, and that he would pay him when he returned from his golf game. Later that day he got back and the porch was just the same but the young chap was covered in green paint. "What have you been doing all day?" he asked the young laborer..."Exactly what you wanted amigo" As he opened the garage door.  "I painted it green, but it's not a porch it's a Ferrari"

I thought it was common knowlege that day laborers gathered at places like Home Depot and Lowes every morning.

This story says it's a common occurrence in cities across America.  link (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/10/10/national/10depot.html?ex=1286596800&en=f7d8881a5ad66a46&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss)

I see (Hispanic) day laborers outside of 7-11 in Sringfield when I'm up early enough on a Saturday. Are you sure this aint the case in Germantown as well?

That's some racist shit right there, Bull.  To be fair about it, had Dupek or one those other cats (For the record, I'm NOT defending him or cats of his ilk) made a post like that you'd be screaming out "Mississippi Burning" and what not.  Yeah, that may have been why were there.  Then again maybe they all just coming thru to cop some ladders. Who knows?

Just cause you may catch me at a Metallica show outside Verizon/MCI/The Phone Booth, it doesn't mean I'm there to scalp tickets or on my way inside to pour beers or usher people in.  I may just be there to see Metallica.  (I use this example, cause it happens ALL. THE. TIME.)  I remember I was walking in the door, & this white cat turns to me with a shocked look & says, "You're here for THIS???!!"  I'm like, um, yeah.  Are ALL of Metallica's fans supposed to be white???

Stereotypes are a slippery slope, homey.  Don't scream bloody murder, & turn around and do the same shit.  It paints (not sayin' you are, cause I don't know you) you out to look like a hypocrite.  Just my two "sense" . . . .

wait wait wait...this thread is about the dumbest thing to come across this message board since the Incubus presale!

if anyone lives in such a sheltered place to have JUST noticed the hispanic day laborer situation in the Baltimore/DC area is growing faster than a Daisuke Matszuaka fastball, then its their fault.

i know for one, that i pass by at least 100 every day at the 7-11 in Fells Point and have seen then in DC and PG County as well.

i know they're fuckin day laborers...have i asked one though? no.  but i am not stupid.

just like the black dude that stands on the corner on my way home, trying to flag down cars....is he a drug dealer? would i be stereotypiing if i thought he was?  well, he is, and i know, i am not stupid.

did bull say "hispanics are all day laborers"??  no.  what else could they be???

if anything, i think its kinda silly that he needed to point this out on a message board....i figured it was a part of daily life around here and cant believe him and others are just taking notice that MD alone has over 100,000 illegal aliens looking for tax-free work in our towns!

so all of you  STFU!  already.  if you dont like the "mexican" day laborers...close your condo doors and pretend they arent there.

have you ever been out to germantown?  i can totally believe that someone from there might not be familiar with the day laborer situation in DC/Bmore.  and believing that joe didn't know about it, his reaction is understandable... i'm sure that given the update beforehand, joe would have reacted differently - ah, the power of knowledge.  so let's all calm down.

I have no idea why you think I'm a know-it-all guy. I do remember that you had a problem with me when I pointed out to one guy in the Just Announced thread that a show has already be mentioned. Other than that, I dunno what you are talking about...

I actually live in a small town called Boyds, but people ask me all the time where Boyds is so I just say Germantown (which is right next to Boyds). I seriously was not aware that Hispanic laborers hang out outside Home Depot. In Santa Rosa, Calif, they are roaming a specific street - not Home Depot.

you can hit san rafael and see them all hanging out in the Canal. and theres no home depots around there. but George Lucas's ILM is around the corner (unless that moved to SF). maybe lucas can find some jobs for them.

a former boss used to pick up the day laborers all the time for work on his house. eventually he hired a few of them on a full-time basis to help with everything. he was always satisfied (and he didnt speak hardly a word of spanish). this was in Cali tho, so not sure how they are out in DC.

on the bus ride to work every morning, i see the morning shift hanging out front of a sherwin williams store in lower haight/alamo square.

i'm sure santa rosa has its fair share of day laborers, the wineries need people to prune the vines and pick the grapes.  i know that napa and sonoma have large immigrant enclaves thanks to the wineries.

Day laborers have been using the Weenie Beenie in Arlington for as long as I can remember.  Back when I moved furniture for a living we'd pick one or two up every once in a while.  The trick is to find someone you can trust and look for him every time.

if anyone lives in such a sheltered place to have JUST noticed the hispanic day laborer situation in the Baltimore/DC area is growing faster than a Daisuke Matszuaka fastball, then its their fault.

i know for one, that i pass by at least 100 every day at the 7-11 in Fells Point and have seen then in DC and PG County as well.

i know they're fuckin day laborers...have i asked one though? no.  but i am not stupid.

just like the black dude that stands on the corner on my way home, trying to flag down cars....is he a drug dealer? would i be stereotypiing if i thought he was?  well, he is, and i know, i am not stupid.

did bull say "hispanics are all day laborers"??  no.  what else could they be???

if anything, i think its kinda silly that he needed to point this out on a message board....i figured it was a part of daily life around here and cant believe him and others are just taking notice that MD alone has over 100,000 illegal aliens looking for tax-free work in our towns!

so all of you  STFU!  already.  if you dont like the "mexican" day laborers...close your condo doors and pretend they arent there.
Calm down and take a chill pill. Of course I have seen it on the news. I was just suprised by what I saw and posted. You need a holiday.

well, considering joe is the biggest knowitall on the board, i must've just figured he knew that too!!

should we tell joe about the black people living in DC too?

(yes, i've been to lily white germantown, and believe it or not, i've been through lily white Santa Rosa too!) [/b]

You live in Baltimore right? This "black dude" you see trying to flag down cars is most likely trying to catch a hack.

actually, living in baltimore you learn that hackers and dealers  have two extremely different demeanors. could you imagine people regularly confusing the two!!!??  (guy getting in your car thinking he's going for a ride, you think you're getting high, or vice versa, lol)

no, there's the hack signal(the two fingers) then theres the staring at every car doing the little eyebrow thing. its hard to describe, i suppose "flagging down" cars was the wrong term.

and unfortunately, i have more knowledge of the ways of baltimore's open air drug market then i'd like to...

(aside from the fact that if you were trying to get a ride, you wouldn't be at the corner of a dead end street and an alley!!!)

Well now that you put it that way...

What if you confused someone looking for a hack with one of the women of washington blvd?  that would be awkward.  not that they even wait for any certain invitation before trying to get into your car.  I had one confuse eye contact with hey baby, how bout one of those 5 dollar hand jobs

Short for hackney carriage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hackney_carriage), it's slang for a taxi.

When Manuel and his S.A.'s go back home to visit, they should each be made to carry back a 5 gallon jug of toxic waste, or else no readmittance later.
