SO am I missing something here?? I have listened to it twice now and still at the conclusion that it sucks, especially compared to Furneral. Whats the deal?? and man they need to cut back a bit on the reverb, makes it a muddled mess.
-
I feel the same way. I think there are a few listenable songs on there, but the production doesn't do much for me.
-
yeah i can dig on a few, but as a whole this album is a serious let down!
-
I think it's brilliant, and it grabbed me pretty much straight off (loved that piano riff on Black Mirror, and just built from there). It took me a long time to get into Funeral -- and in fact, I actively disliked it for awhile.
I've found that some of my older friends (i.e. older than 35) really like it since the band sounds somewhat like an updated, artsy-fartsier Springsteen on this record.
-
I think maybe one of the reasons I don't like it as much is because it sounds like Springsteen. I have tried very hard over the years to like him, but I don't.
This is also the exact reason one of my friends loves this album.

I was just thinking the same thing this morning!
I got an advance copy of this, listened to it a few times and thought it was great.....then I didn't listen for a while and just now listened to Neon Bible and Funeral back to back - there are a few good songs on NB but it pales in comparison to Funeral

More like John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band.

You're both wrong - They sound like Meat Loaf (http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/news/artslife/story.html?id=d26b477d-3528-4d94-bcc6-dfb0a25ca7cd&k=63823&p=1)

Which reminds me, I was annoying my wife to no end by loudly singing a Meatloaf song as we walked to our car yesterday, and when we get in the car and turn the ignition, on pops a radio commercial for Meatloaf at DAR, featuring him singing that very song. Maybe the part about me singing a Meatloaf song belongs in the confession thread.

I'm having trouble getting into it...I don't think its bad, but it just hasn't caught my attention like Funeral did.
But it all might change once I get my iPod back and I have a chance to listen to it with headphones all the way through. It broke right when this came out, and my computer speakers just don't give anything justice.

I think Arcade Fire's "Neon Bible" is one of the most brilliant follow ups to date. It has a beautiful, slightly darker feeling to it than funeral had. I also scored an advanced copy of it about a month before it's release. Listened to it once, did not touch it for a week. Thought it was nothing compared to Funeral. Started to get into it again, and thus has been hooked since. I listen to it about everyday. Overall great album. Best of the year so far.
I encourage people who did not care for it the first few times, to listen to it once more. Make sure you make it all the way through to the new version of "No Cars Go" which may be the best recorded Arcade Fire song to date.
-
I wished I could say something that would persude you to dig it but it's hard to be objective. As I said in the other AF tread, they can do no wrong in my mind.

That is what pissed me off the most, i thought the original version was much better, i have a real problem with the production of this new album.
-
It's all a matter of taste i guess. I really enjoyed it overall. I understand if you don't though.
-
yeah i'm sill giving it a chance and it is growing on me, atleast some of it. Funeral really blew my mind though.

I have read all the posts about this sounding like Springsteen. It does Springsteen an injustice to compare him to the Arcade Fire. I know he is not popular with the hipsters on this board who hate Springsteen, but they have no taste in real music. He is right behind Dylan as the best American song writer.

Betcha 50 bucks Springsteen digs Arcade Fire.

I think a couple of years ago he said his favorite band was Old 97's.

When I downloaded this off I-tunes, I thought something went awry in the download... extremely muddy sound. I think the songs are great, but the production is inexcusable. I know music is art, but when you opt for something that sounds poor when the main objective is to appeal the ears... that is taking it a little too far. I like the songs, but honestly can't listen to this much.

Your ears are fine; many have commented on the lousy mix. I wouldn't be surprised if it's re-released later this year with a better mix.

When I first heard this album, I was completely and utterly blown away. (Yes, I know that's a clichéd expression, but it's warranted here.) I went out and told everyone I know that The Arcade Fire are the saviors of rock 'n' roll. I loved their first album, too, and their 9:30 Club show in January 2005 is a major highlight of my concert-going history. I consider "Neon Bible" to be a brilliant and worthy follow-up to "Funeral," deftly exhibiting growth and maturity in songwriting. But (and you knew a but was coming, right?) I'm actually finding my love for this album waning with repeated listens, instead of deepening. Maybe I've just listened to it too much at this point, and I need to give it a break. (I've been listening to it several times a week in my car since its release.) "Intervention" still impresses the pants off of me, but some of the other songs have been losing my interest lately. In any case "Neon Bible" definitely does not suck, but I'm now of the opinion that it is not as good as "Funeral." But why does it have to be? In any case, I haven't heard an album so far this year that comes close to matching it.

Ocean of Noise continues to amaze me more and more.
-
Yeah, that's a good one. I'm also in love with "My Body Is A Cage". The songs I've been losing interest in are "Black Mirror" and "Keep The Car Running" and, to a lesser extent, "No Cars Go". Don't get me wrong. I like them, a lot, just less than the other songs at this point.
-
It doesn't have to be as good as Funeral. I just think it would be better if they didn't sound like they were singing inside an empty water tank.
