Title: XXIX Olympic Thread
Post by: sonickteam2 on August 06, 2008, 08:19:00 am
We need one of these, to talk of all of the most interesting happenings. Like one of USA's 80 gold medals .... or one of Canada's 2.

I'm be curious to try a Chinese Snickers. The ones I tried in Europe were messed-up... like there's no caramel layer or something.

I have a new plan to make it interesting for Americans again...

Lets not go up only against national teams, lets let orgainzation have teams, like Al Qeada.  What American wouldn't watch the US take on Al Qaeda in the 2000 meter medley?
Title: Re: XXIX Olympic Thread

or how about the sponsers just have the olympics.

wouldnt you like to see two overweight balding executives try to do the hammerthrow?

  i know i would.

better than watching Norway score goals faster than.....welll faster than it took me to even get comfortable on my couch!

us swimming is going to absolutely destroy.  we are insanely stacked.  we have so much depth in all but one or two events.  it's going to be a lot of fun to watch.

basketball will probably be terrible, though.

 those are my predictions.

I'd love to see that too, but it's unlikely seeing as there is no such thing as a 2000 meter medley.  Maybe the biathalon in the winter games?  ski, shoot.  ski, shoot.

loving the olympics ...

its hilarious how the USA men's gymnastics team is so overly bro-centric ... all of them are unbelievably self-consciously "masculine" with their muscle flexing and chest bumping ... it's almost as if they've each spent their entire lives defending themselves against people who called them sissy gymnastics boys

man -  "they are so evil and are mean to other countries, and lie about stuff to get their way and don't want people to really have freedoms beyond what the government wants them to want."

neither has Ireland, although we came agonizingly close in the K1 slalom (4th) and our boxers are looking fairly good, iirc all 5 have made it through to the quarter finals

I felt both bad for the Irish bloke in the K1 and happy for the competitor from Togo who had the run of his life to take the bronze.

How's the Irish looking in track and field?

eh, I don't see any great prospects to be honest, we have decent 200m and 400m athletes (which is a big change for us - we've a much stonger middle distance heritage) and apparently the female 3000m steeplechaser is decent....but its a real stretch to think we can actually challenge for medals

boxers are probably the best bet...historically its by far our best event, having accounted for 9 of our 16 total Olympic medals (I'm not counting drug cheat Michelle Smiths 4 medals in 1996)

I think GB will do well in the track cycling events, that's our only hope of anymore medals I think. We've done well in the rowing events in the past but I don't know about this time round.

Don't the Irish do well in equestrian competitions too?

you mess with the chinese, and they release the red army and kill you.  no reporters, no internet, no voice.  they have cameras on every corner watching every citizen for buddha's sake.  do not oppose them.  they will fight for what they (the government) believe in and they will take you down if you don't let them believe that.

if these medals are taken away from the chinese, expect some serious shit to go down.  goodbye tibet, goodbye exports that keep our economy afloat, goodbye sweet and sour chicken.

putting the age issue aside for a moment, last night's girl's (i just can't bring myself to say women's) gymnastics competition made for some riveting television.  kept me up until 1:30 am, dammit.  how the hell those athletes can keep their composure and concentration under those circumstances, and pull off such feats... the mind boggles.  one of the more beautiful, entertaining and dramatic things i've seen on the tube in a long time.

well, phelps is officially bulletproof.  it's absolutely ridiculous what he has done and how he's done it.  the 100m fly has to be one of the most impressive and exciting races i've seen since, well, the men's 4x100 freestyle relay.  the u.s. is just incredible.

An open letter to my doodle friends....

This year I have been finding myself rooting for the US athletes in most events, with womens beach volleyball being the exception because I simply root for the hottest couple. This has not always been the case and I've figured out why.

First and foremost I would like to compliment NBC on the coverage. In the past watching the Olympics in this country has been nothing but frustration because they simply focus on the American athlete, not the event. I don't give a rats arse that the athlete competing was brought up on a farm in Nebraska and almost lost a foot in a combine harvester accident at the age of 9. We haven't had that shit this year. Also in the past, once the American was out..end of coverage!
Secondly, if an American was favourite to win a gold the commentators would talk as if it was the athletes god given right to that gold, not that he/she had yet to earn it. If the athlete ended up with silver or bronze then that would be considered nothing but failure. This year they have been behind the athlete but not to the point of it's gold or failure. I am also impressed with the attitude of the athletes, especially the mens basketball team. Here we have a bunch of millionaires playing with so much pride for their country it almost chokes you up, and during their off day they are seen in the audience cheering on the other American athletes.

When the olympics started I was only going to watch the opening ceremony then nothing else because of past experience with the tv coverage over here, but ended up following the Phelps Phenomenom and found myself really enjoying the coverage by NBC.

Now I know track and field athletes can be an arrogant bunch but I hope this new and refreshing trend continues.

I just wish they would cover track cycling more.

anything is better than john tesh, but their decision not to run the 100m final live is simply unconscionable

that race is the cadillac of the summer games and everyone knew what happened within minutes of it ending, but i couldn't find the footage on NBC's web site all day ... i had to download the footage from some french station that broadcasted it live

incredible race, BOLT is just insanely fast and i loved his antics

at least you get most of the stuff live. . .they are tape delaying the whole primetime coverage outside of the eastern and central time zones.

But the "bronze rush" continued this morning as our light heavyweight boxer also made the semi's where I think he will fight one of your people

Going by history I think we already know the outcome of this one!!

The Irish lad will get the shit kicked out of him but refuse to admit defeat so keep 'fighting for Ireland' for the next 800 years, even though the British lad went home, forgot about the fight and moved on.

Am I the only one who finds beach volleyball completely unwatchable?  Sure, the women are nice to look at (in some cases), but the game itself is a total fucking bore.  Serve, pass, set, spike, repeat.  One out of every four or five points you might get a block or a rally but everything else looks exactly the same.  Maybe a 4-person team would make the game a little more engaging?

Wait..they have schools in Canada?

I agree, beach volley ball is pretty much unwatchable and I'm convinced that's the reason they were those skimpy bikinis, so people will actually watch it. I don't find 6' tall skinny bitches with no tits all that sexy to be honest but nice tight arses and toned flat stomachs make up for it....almost.

Michael Phelps Returns To His Tank At Sea World

ORLANDOâ??Fourteen-time Olympic gold medalist and SeaWorld main attraction Michael Phelps returned to his seven-million-gallon water tank Wednesday to resume his normal schedule of performing in six shows a day for marine park crowds every day of the week.

Phelps, the 6'4", 200-pound aquatic mammal, and the first ever SeaWorld swimmer to be raised in captivity by foster swimmers (Mark Spitz and Dara Torres), was recaptured by trainer Bob Bowman in a hoop net baited with an entire Dutch apple pie following Phelps' final Olympic event last Sunday. Phelps was then tethered to the rudder of a container ship bound for St. Petersburg, guided down local waterways, and introduced back into his home habitat, the tank in SeaWorld's 5,500 seat stadium, known to park officials and visitors alike as "Phelps' Happy Harbor."

"Michael seemed really excited to be back," said Bowman, adding that the male swimmer became playful upon entering his tank, breaching the water and sounding repeatedly. "He just started swimming freestyle and backstroke, and only stopped to slide belly first onto the tank's platform so he could be fed dozens of fried egg sandwiches."

full story here... the onion. (http://www.theonion.com/content/news/michael_phelps_returns_to_his_tank)

I found it very annoying this year. Also, why for some reason is the trend is to insert a hug (BOTH teams!?!) every time before the next serve? I understand when a point is made, but every time from both sides?
 Just slows down the game.

I agree with sonick, water polo was lacking, couldn't keep the ball in play, simply annoying.

I normally love gymnastics but the coverage isn't as seamless as it was in the past (more sideline coverage, less event). And sadly, most of the US girls were hurt or out of the game.

Unfortunate DQs in track the other night.. (last night coverage for east coast/US)

i agree. definitely not watching gymnastics for the hotties!  not only are they quite young, but they are generally strangely shaped too.

I think the gymnastics coverage was funny though because everytime it was over, Bela Korlyi just cried about how unfair the world was, and Bob Costas laughed at him.

I was rooting big time for the canuck diver-babe (smoking bod) yesterday. That last dive the chink did was good but all those 10'S...come oooonnnnn! Screams 'fix' imo.

I felt bad for the doodle girl too, diving so bad in the last competition of her career. Fucked up tricep and wrist though so she was a real trooper.

Finally, in the diving event those chinkie girls couldn't make a fucking splash if they did a divebomb. 4'10", 65lbs and 7 years old or whatever. My wife was saying how focused the chinese divers were until I reminded her it's not focus it's fear. If they don't medal it's off to the labor camps for the rest of their natural.

Do you think the IOC will have the stones to strip the Chinese gymnast of their golds for being under age? I doubt it.

On the subject of divers....their 'thing' lasts about 1.5 seconds right? Then why is it after every dive they need a 30 minute shower then soak in a hot tub for an hour?

Because they don't do one dive and then it's over. They're keeping their muscles warm so they don't tighten up.

Then why don't they just wear those leg warmers like the dancers did back in the 80's?

And why do they take those tiny towels up to the top of the diving board and keep stroking themselves with it even though they're not even wet?

There's a diving team at the pool my son takes his class on Saturday mornings, and there's one girl inparticular who is about 17 years old. She stands on the dive board for at least 5 minutes with this little towel and keeps rubbing it between her legs like she's literally rubbing one off. Then she dives in, gets out of the pool stands under the shower for about 10 minutes, dries off, goes back up the dive board and starts to masturbate with the little towel all over again...it really is quite interesting to watch. My wife keeps reminding me we're there to watch our son take swimming lessons not watch the babe double clicking the mouse!!!
