didn't we just have this thread last month?
U2, radiohead, pearl jam, and the usual list of "over-rated bands"...
-
Ditto what Kosmo and Sweets said. I'm not doing this topic for the 4th month in a row.
-
No offense Joe (well, okay, a little -- ZING! Right in the eye, y'pirate! ARRRRRR) but didn't we just do this? Like a week or two ago? I came up with highly comical and prescient satires of names, and some foolishly labelled it as Mad Magazining.
Anyway, this should be called the OkkerSpoonDaftWilcoMouse LCD Award.
-
Yeah, we did.
Joe's turning into walkonby. It's only a matter of time before he starts threads filled with LSD-fueled rants.

The 90s.

But then he would be GGW going by recent events!

Hah...very true.

Well over 90% of the bands on the planet

I appreciate your concerns, let's revisit in a year? haha...

deep deep hatred in my cold little heart for this sweet duo ... their 930 club show was just unbearable
and i like the frames :(

I hate the Frames, the Swell Season, AND the Commitments.
-
Ya'll are just silly.
Stills, Stellastarr*, Travis, Pixies, of course, Dave Matthews. I don't know if he has a following, but I couldn't sit through Liam Finn (or at least the lady singing with him).
-
Cat Power. Live at least she was a xanax fueled mess when I saw her.
-
may the gods of indie pop power strike me dead, but i only listened to these guys because of the dinosaur connection. then i matured into knowing that after one album of it, the rest are exactly the same with funny pictures of childhood memories on the front and inside. f, sebadoh. f them to nerdy glasses hell.
there, roll that printout and smoke it.

Dag Nasty

Really? I thought Brian's band was great around the time Ian was making that Embrace release. Seemed like so much tension between the 2 of them, it made for a couple of fine albums IMHO. Great angst fueled lyrics.
I also found Brian to be much more personable than Ian as well. He actually saved me from getting booted at a show and he didn't know me from Adam. Just Sayin.
-
Kosmo, ban this man! Ban him now!

You and Relaxer ought to start your own rolling paper business. Maybe call it Relaxonby Rolling Papers. Has a nice ring to it and seems to suggest a smooth smoke. You write the script and Relaxer crafts the ever so delicate papers. You could even recruit Econo and GGW for your quality control division.
Stretching to keep this post on topic, the use of rolling papers involves sucking. Any other kind is purely at your own discretions.
For the record, with an exception or two, I agree with most of the bands listed above even though I think a couple of them are actually fairly good. Just not my cup of tea.
Will add Feist because I can't stand her. Must change the station or even turn it off every time she's played on the radio.
-
I don't know, SPARX, I know those guys too and they're nice people, but their music just struck me as predictable, humorless and way too earnest. But then so much of DC punk had gone that route by around 1985. Other people seem to think of that era as some kind of era of greatness, so to each their own...

Oh, I agree wholewheartedly with that statement. There seemed to be a lot of bitterness in both Brian and Ian at that point. They definitely were letting it all out through the music.
When did earnest become a bad thing?
Face it, it was all downhill after Minor Threat, but catching a live Dag Nasty show for like 5 bucks was totally worth it and 20 some years later I still pull out those couple of releases for a listen when the mood fits.
Living in West Virginia and not having them rammed down my throat like the D.C. area probably helped in my case.
Oh, and for the record, I own no Fugazi and am perfectly content with that.
-
Earnest is a bad thing when one takes oneself too seriously, which seemed to be a problem with "Revolution Summer" in general.
As for Fugazi... I don't own much of their recorded stuff, but live I've got to admit they're pretty amazing.

I consider it more conviction than anything, the belief they are on the right path and doing and saying what they truly believed at the time. I can't dis them for that. The music biz is dog eat dog. Not much room for the weak willed. My experiences with them were enjoyable. As for anyone elses, it's anyones guess.
-
definitely the white stripes

Yeah, Scientologists, Nazis, and Maoists also believe they're on the right path, that quality isn't inherently good... but enough debating the distant past, sorry for bringing it up. :)

No need to be sorry. They're no sacred cow as far as I'm concerned. Just a difference of opinion, that's all. There's still Nazis?

so i was having a talk with a girl at the office, and the topics of satan, the supernatural, and other things one should probably not be talking about outloud, made their ways into the mix.
so i get home, and a fricking rusty pitchfork comes flying off the wall with enough velocity to puncture into my shoe, sock, and foot. nice one, you devil. i better not now need a shot or something. and i was having a good day.
oh yeah, foo fighters suck.

Speaking of the supernatural, I see a tetanus shot in your near future. Seriously.

Word... seriously boring mainstream... sorry about your problems with Pitchfork.
-
Girl Talk.
I might be the only person who just doesn't get it.
Is there really that much talent that goes into what he does? Fill me in on what exactly I'm missing. I've got Night Ripper and it sounds like one of those "Best of 2003 Megamix" things.

The Raconteurs.

I was trying to think of a band that I thought fit into this thread. And then I realized that I've already contributed my fair share of judgements to other threads over the years, with the theme of this thread title.
But I still have a special dislike reserved from the White Stripes. Though if Meg played naked, there would be some redeeming value.

No - Maybe I haven't heard the right stuff, but I don't get it either. I couldn't even get through a few soundclips on emusic. It was just painful.

ugh...she's a skanky looking bitch with a nice rack.
And why does Jack White try to resemble Edward Scissorhands all the time?
Pete Townsend pretty much echos my opinion of them.

if you only knew satan's opinion of gay people. it would make your mouth drop! i had the worst night last night. my whole foot is bruised from one puncture wound?? and the blood. damn blood. almost went to emergency room, then i realized the cost. off to urgent care for my t. shot. yeah!
and the reverse of the topic. i used to think arcade fire really, really sux, then i listened to neon bible and was totally turned around.

Sometimes that's quite enough, for purposes of looking at only.
I didn't say I wanted to marry her!

True, very true...a nice rack is a nice rack at the end of the day.
-
The Hold Steady is pretty darn terrible.
-
And they don't even have a nice rack.
I dare you to listen to the Girls and Boys in America album and not enjoy it.
:p

I did exactly the same thing with Jimmy's Chicken Shack at some festival in DC a few years ago.

I think I made this clear in another thread, but just for kicks...
Animal Collective
Devendra Banhart
Joanna Newsom
She Wants Revenge
-
Let me end Friday on a positive note. I'll wholeheartedly agree with all of those selections.
