Title: the monthly headphones topic...
Post by: bigyellow100 on March 31, 2007, 02:28:00 pm
im in the market for some good headphones.  i hate in-ear/earbud headphoens; i prefer on ear headphones, something like this:

 http://www.bose.com/controller?event=VIEW_PRODUCT_PAGE_EVENT&product=triport_oe_headphones_index (http://www.bose.com/controller?event=VIEW_PRODUCT_PAGE_EVENT&product=triport_oe_headphones_index)

but apparently those arent that great.

id pay around $200.  no more.

the difficult thing about buying headphones is that there arent many (or any) stores that carry many different high-end ones which are demo-ed so its all trial and error.  i dont really have time to buy and return multiple times (that is if i can find them).

so id like to know what you guys have gotten and what you recommend.

 thanks.

biggie - what environment will you be using the 'phones in?  at home in your quiet living room?  outside or on the metro?  while jogging?  during DJ sets at a club?  this will affect what would be best for you...

i'm a HUGE fan of Grado headphones (http://www.gradolabs.com/), but they're open-ear so not very good for metro/outdoors.  they sound as good as they look retro/dorky  :)

im going to use these headphones everywhere, but mostly while i travel, on the metro, bus, airplane, etc... so i need ones that are portable (possibly collapsible) and really durable.  i dont really like noise canceling ones because i find the noise canceling contraption a little cumbersome, the fact that they use batteries annoying, and finally because they dont really cancel noise to my satisfaction.

Kosmo's sennheisers and the Grado's are both great...I've got both.  Grado's sound better, but are a bit clunky and not very portable.  I wouln't recommend either on a plane though....their open ear design emits quite a bit of sound.

after some research, ive decided that its coming down to the sennheiser px100 and the akg k26p for their portability, durability, and sound to value ratio.

i have already bought the px100 and right now im waiting for the akg.

the px100 does deliver amazing sound, but im probably gonna blow out my eardrums listening to them if i use them extensively on the metro/airplane.  so im probably leaning towards getting closed ear headphones.  it also doesnt help that i think theyre kinda ugly.

i went to best buy and asked if i could try the bose oe headphones on my ipod and surprisingly they allowed me to.  i wasnt too impressed.  obviously they had it hooked up to some amazing stereo system, because these bose headphones which cost $120+ more delivered about as good a sound as the px100s.

ive heard good things about these akgs (and the brand in general).  ill see which one ill keep.

 thanks for your help guys.

Are the PX200s the closed ear version of the PX100s?

I could see where closed ear would be better for blocking out noises...  I use my PX100s at very low volumes at work, but do wonder about having to turn the volume up with them when in a noisy environment.   Might have to look into a pair of the PX200s.

Has anyone tried the new Bose earbuds?

I've got the Sony earbuds(I'm not a real audiophile).  Just wondering if BOSE has made an advancement...

Generally speaking, bose is crap, at least for the money they charge.  Budget spent on adverts and marketing rather than R&D.

i was thinking the same thing, what did you end up with?   i just ordered the AKGs, mainly because i wanted a closed-ear system

Any recommendations on good earbuds? I have some cheap Sony ones, which don't block out the sound on the Metro, and so I think it's about time to upgrade. I'm hoping to pay no more than $100...

i'm loving the AKG's but my earbuds died and i'm looking for a new pair of those, so i'm interested as well ... i'm hoping for the under $50 range, any decent options?

 EDIT:

 i'm looking at these:
 http://www.headphone.com/guide/by-headphone-type/in-ear-monitor-type/sennheiser-cx300-b.php (http://www.headphone.com/guide/by-headphone-type/in-ear-monitor-type/sennheiser-cx300-b.php)

$31.99 seems to be a pretty good deal for entry level in-ear phones ... etymotics ER-6i are on sale for just under $70 on amazon, i loved these ear buds, but they died on me after almost two years (1 year warranty)

Can Grados even be driven by portable electronic devices without an amp or pre-amp?

I have the Sennheiser CX-300b's too.  They sound great.  I've also seen V-Moda ear buds at Costco for ~$80.  I don't have experience with them but you can look into it.

the sr-60, sr-80 and sr-125: definitely.  not sure about anything above that, shouldn't be hard to look up tho.  they have just come out with the iGrado, made especially for portable electronics.  details on their website.

one thing that concerns me about the cx-300's:  frequency response (http://tinyurl.com/37d9yk).  that's an ugly low-end boost they have going on.  i'd make sure your player has a flexible EQ so you can control that.  electronic music might not sound so good on these.

considering the wear and tear that in-ear headphones go through, i think a two year lifespan isn't too surprising.

I was actually looking at both these models. I'm leaning toward the V-Modas, largely because of this comment on Amazon about Sennheisers:

The bad part is that there are microphonics with this unit. When the lead wires bounce against you you hear it; a stong breeze can produce a whistling sound in your ear; you may hear your own footsteps / breathing / gum chewing / etc.

Not sure if that's also the case with V-Modas, but it seems like that would be annoying, especially on days like yesterday. Plus, I don't think I'd like the long "J" cord...

i had those same issues with the much-lauded ER-6i's, i think it's a pretty common thing for in-ear headphones
