Who's going tomorrow? And does anybody know what time this is supposed to start? The Dischord site hasn't posted any info.
-
I saw the first show of the tour in Richmond. Great show, very chatty, signed stuff for everyone afterwards.
Only played an hour though. No complaints though.
-
I heard doors at 7:30, show at 8. It's gonna be $5, benefitting the Washington Free Clinic.
There's also gonna be a food drive so bring peanut butter, canned veggies, etc.
-
yeah i'll be there with some friends, i was just checking here to see if anyone knew what time it started. so cool.
-
soccer team is playing first right? so the evens wouldnt go on til 9 or so?
i have some things i have to do after work tomorrow so i'm trying to figure out when the latest i could leave is to still catch them
-
Sadly, I'd made dinner plans for tonight about a month before I heard about this show so I won't be able to attend. I'm bummed...I think this is the first show of theirs I've missed in the area in the last year or so. Have fun!!
-
Soccer Team is playing too? Damn. Sorry I have to miss this. Soccer Team's disc is one of my favorites of the year.
-
Where is the venue again? close to a metro?
-
St Stephens is at 16th and Newton, a few blocks northwest of the Columbia Heights Metro.
-
thanks!

I haven't been to a concert like that (under 200 people) in a while. I thought the Evens sounded better live than on their CD. In particular, Amy's voice was a lot more impressive. The posters they were selling for $3 were a great deal.
-
I thought the new songs had a bit more growl to them live, which was nice.
The three dollar poster is quite fantastic. Ryan from Soccer Team did 'em and he also has some stuff being shown at Transformer:

Yes it was a good show. The Evens, they're a dance band.
I'm glad I picked up a poster early on, it looks like it sold out. Very nice work by Ryan.

I've listened to both Evens releases a number of times, and while they are pleasant enough, they're pretty dull (though the sound of the baritone guitar is interesting for a spell).
Does anyone actually REALLY DIG this group or are they PURELY riding the coat tails of Ian's past successes (which would be understandable, I suppose, considering his past accomplishments, in the worlds of music, business and activism).
Or maybe i'm just totally missing the boat on the greatest thing since, uh, Fugazi.

I really dig them, and yes, in a completely different way than I really dig Fugazi. They've got an interestingly unique sound which I think is pretty fresh for the whole DC music scene. Also well thought-out lyrics and powerful live shows. Always fun. That, in a nutshell, provides for a relatively good band...don't you think?
-
I really dig the Evens. Their first album was probably my favorite album for the year it came out (2005, I think).
-
They're ok. I think they've got a pretty unique sound and put on a pretty good show. That being said, I think their 2-person line-up is pretty limiting. I'm doubtful they'll be able to keep it interesting for very long. By the end of their Ft. Reno show this summer, I was getting bored.
The Ian-factor definitely intrigued me at first. Part of what made it interesting was the fact that Mr. Hardcore put out a nearly-acoustic record. That's fine for one or two records, but I predict it gets old after that.
I haven't heard the new one yet. Hopefully Santa will help me out with that one.

Oooh, you obviously didn't come up real close at that show towards the end, did ya? It was a jolly kickass dance/sing along party at that point. Fun fun fun.

No, because I was already getting bored by that point and debating leaving. Though they did have a lot of technical problems that night. I'm sure that played a big part in my apathy towards the show.
-
they did keep the set length to about an hour the other night, i never got tired of them, but didn't feel like it was too short either.
i liked the first album for the sound and this one for the lyrics. they've got some good, angry protest songs with messages more overt than most fugazi stuff, but still clever and well done.

i think amy's the "it" factor for me with the evens.
I think her voice has a really enviable tone to it, and her drumming is spot on, like when she was in the warmers.
i also have to note, that i was not an amy farina fan until the warmers reissue stuff.
she played drums on a Lois ep and i couldn't stand her. i actually had doubts that she was even in the same room with lois (the "bet the sky" ep if anyone cares. where she pretty much massacres a cover of "hey antoinette" from lois' early band "courtney love".
not to get all k-records up in this piece, but i loved that shit.
