Any feed back from the show? Did they go on on time? How late did they play?
-
I wasn't there and I didn't listen to it on NPR, but I can tell you they stunk.
-
HIt the stage almost exactly at 10, opened with Consoler of the Lonely, ended with Blue Veins at 11. Hit the stage about 4 or 5 minutes later, played a 4 song encore
Many Shades of Black
Salute Your Salution
Broken Boy Soldier
Carolina Drama
Off stage at 11:30
It was phenomenal, but they didn't play 5 on the 5, Together, or Attention. Hopefully they'll play it tonight.
-
Really enjoyed last night's show!
-
It was on NPR???? Will it be on NPR tonight???
-
Very good show. Not at all the bland supergroup performance I was expecting. The live setting adds a great deal to the songs. Lots of "rockin' out" moments. That Jack White guy is talented; I think he just might go far in the music biz.
Good to see the Director (and to walk away from the encounter unscathed). Nice to meet callat as well. He seems like a decent fellow for being an evil Live Nation bot.
-
that was my first time seeing them and i really enjoyed it. it was VERY loud and i was far away from the speakers so take those ear plugs.
i'd skip the black lips, i didnt care for them at all

unfortunately, posters #3 through 7 are wrong. although they were there and actually witnessed the performance, their opinions are null and void. poster #2, charlie, has already dismissed the show out of hand without having heard a single note.
you can read his other concert reviews in this month's Maxim.

Great show! As for loud, most 930 shows sound too loud to me, this one wasn't any worse. But at least having it loud keeps people from talking through the set.

Can anyone figure out the underlying file reference?

Good to meet you as well. Though I am not as unscathed from my evening out with the Director.
I completely agree that this is a band largely benefited from a live setting. I think they're records are pretty boring, but live, it was definitely a fun time.

you won't be able to, that's DRM for ya. your best bet is to play the stream and record it in an audio editor (soundforge, peak, bias, etc).

only thing "not good" is dismissing a show you haven't been to :p i'll post my opinion of the show tomorrow, after i've seen it.
-
Lol.. I think sweetcell is referring to this http://www.blackcrowes.com/Release_MAXIM.html (http://www.blackcrowes.com/Release_MAXIM.html)

Oooooooooh... I missed the null and void part with reference to posters 3-7.
-
Good show. Brendan Benson looked bored for most of it, but Jack White had enough energy for both.

Brendan always looks bored - that's his shtick.

Black Lips were wayyy better than the first time I saw them too, although they toned down the crazy about 98%.
-
I was looking forward to some insanity when I saw them at the black cat when they were there last but none was to be found there either. :(
-
uh, what everyone else said.
what, i should say it myself? okie: raconteurs rocked. the intro/build-up to "level" was insane. i think brandon sang lead more often then jack, which was generally a very good thing. so many solid vocalists on stage last night... impressive. the whole band just oozes talent. i liked their opening set for dylan @ patriot center better, but this was a very solid second.
black lips = forgettable. i'm not convinced anyone in the band actually knows how to play guitar. no insanity, just a lot of noise and some occasional off-key singing.
-
I'm glad I went to this show- pure fun :) I was surprised more people weren't jamming out, but that's a standard complaint/observation I suppose. I too saw them open for Dylan at the Patriot Center and given and inch they took a mile... given a full set they produced. Extended a lot of their songs and generally just rocked the f out. My fiancee who only knows them as the "Racoons" had fun too- so thats a bonus. I can't decide who I like better the Stripes or the Rac after this show I'm leaning toward the Rac.

so what you are saying is that black lips = fallout boy - guyliner
-
I agree with all of the positive comments already mentioned. I had already seen them at Coachella about a month ago, and it was great to see them in a smaller venue. As for the Black Lips, I though the first song or two sounded decent, but it went quickly downhill from there. I definitely have no desire to ever see them again.

not for me anyway. i actually like fob but have no desire to hear black lips again.

Black Lips > FOB
any day.

well, they are comparable in as much as i don't want to hear either band's music.
at least FOB know how to play their instruments. what they choose to play is horrible, but they show some proficiency. can't say i saw much of that on stage last night between 8:45 and 9:30. one particularly memorable solo was a 8-bar repetition of a single note... that didn't fit. so grating.
but enough of the lips, let's concentrate on how good the raconteurs were. i look forward to seeing them again at lolla.
-
i thought one of the knocks on FOB was they were strictly amateur hour live, because as we well all know in this day and age almost anyone can play their "instruments" well in the studio...
-
really? didn't know this. i haven't been keeping up on reviews of FOB's live performances. by bad :p
-
I like studio Black Lips.
Live is definitely a different story, though. I guess it was kinda fun at the black cat but that's about the extent of it.
-
i thought the show really came together towards the end, and especially the encore. of course the whole night was fun, and jack white is the king, but a lot of their songs didn't seem to add up and early on i was thinking things like 'if the white stripes (at their best) are pharmaceutical grade c-c-c-c-ocaine, this would be a grande sumatra while reading the sunday times at starbucks.' what excites me about the raconteurs is jack white playing in a more 'melodious' balanced environment. but sometimes it seemed like they were in a similar space as the stripes - but watered down and unfocused. but i thought they settled in, and jack white settled in punctuating songs rather than dominating (like #24 era Kobe) and it ended on a very high
note - maybe i just liked the last 7 or songs best.
i also thought there was a different spark when they opened for Dylan at Patriot Center - where they were pretty much on fire from start to finish (but maybe that was like Jack White as Kobe going for 81)
-
When I went to see The Raconteurs, I wasn't expecting a mosh pit or even a crazy crowd. When I was waiting in line and I saw older crowd rather than bunch of teenagers, I was happy. Their music is not the type of music that you can go nuts for. Its more of a theatre show, where you see Jack White do solos and be amazed by his talent. I thought it was too loud and the sound was distorted - for me - since I was at the front the whole time. The Black Lips were amazing. The guitarist with the gold teeth wearing all white was just hilarious. The were good as well. As much as I love the bands that come to the 9:30 club, I hate the stupid staff.

BUZZZZT - incorrect. please try again.
at a minimum, please explain what you mean by "stupid staff". i have yet to encounter such a creature, but maybe my 6+ years of hanging out at the club have been in blissful ignorance...
lemme guess, you got busted.
-
4+ years for me and no such creatures encountered here either.
I see sweetcell's "you got busted" and raise him a "you got kicked out and deserved it."

The bouncers and staff are dicks, but dealing with drunk asshole and just people who ask the same shit night in and night out will do that to you. I understand why they're a bit "get out of my face" and I dont really care, I go for the show not the staff.
The bartender with the blonde hair on the merch side makes CRAZY strong drinks, shes alright in my book.
-
It's not a matter of being a dick and not being a dick, eventually you get to realize that people just want whatever they can get away with, so you adopt a cool demeanor not unlike being aloof. It has nothing with being a dick. If a guard shows favouritism to one person, it opens the floodgates.
It's pretty easy if you're a concertgoer. Look at the guard, look at the amount of people in the room, and think how many shows this guard sees every year. Then go "Wow. I'm really not special."
Being a dick is what I used to do during Ozzfest when my boss would stick me in the lawn in the rain with a radio, a mag lite, and a nightstick. :D Speak softly and carry a big stick (and know how to use it).
in closing, unless you've done security, you have no idea the bullshit they go through, and I for one adore the 9:30 b/c they don't put up with juvenile bullshit. Of course, I also don't try to sneak backstage, I don't try to hump anything that I didn't bring with me :p and I'm actually *gasp* respectful and don't get totally wasted.. unless someone is driving home.
but for the record I've been hung over 4 times in my adult life and 2 of them are from 9:30 Club shows.

again, i'll disagree. i've never been treated wrong at the 930, staff has always been pleasant and i haven't witnessed them do anything other than their job, professionally.
they do enforce rules, firmly, so maybe complainers have issue with the rules and not the staff? maybe it's a case of getting what you dish out? or maybe i'm an incurable fanboy of the club.
-
Can't remember what show it was now, but there was a guy who was super rowdy -- dancing in a clinically questionable manner. He started to bang around into the people around him (like me), and staff swooped in and took him out so quickly I was amazed. Note, this was not a mosh pit, near a most pit, or even an area in the crowd that was particularly energetic & rowdy. I was very grateful...
I've been going to 9:30 for 18 years, never had a problem with staff. Granted, I don't try to get away with stuff I'm not supposed to. Some may be pretty aloof, but I imagine that's a necessity amidst the nightly chaos. When you have a problem, though, they are there to assist professionally and quickly. And that's what you really need at a place like 9:30.

I have never understood how people can complain about the 930 staff. The best I can surmise is that they don't get out a lot. There are probably only a few people on this board who remember the Bayou. Now that was a club with a stereotypically dickhead staff. Mostly jarheads who were looking for an excuse to get in a fight.
The 930 staff may be a little aloof, but they aren't there to see the show; they are on the clock. By and large they have far less "I work at a nightclub and I'm too cool" attitude than most other places I have been. I am not exactly Mr. Extrovert, but the 930 staph who I have engaged in conversation (really just ThatGuy and the cute bartender with the star tattoo on her bicep) have shown themselves to be good people.
I am sure that some people will write off my opinion as ass-kissing, and that's fine. But I don't know how many hundreds of shows I have seen at the 930 club - both old and new - and I have never had any issues with the staff, even when I have been shitfaced and obnoxious.

Ugh. I always hated the Bayou. Everything from the pain-in-the-ass staff to dealing with Georgetown in general. I wasn't sad at all to see that place go.
