Couple Fights to Name Baby 'Metallica' (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/04/03/AR2007040300963.html?hpid=entnews)

STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Metallica may be a cool name for a heavy metal band, but a Swedish couple is struggling to convince officials it is also suitable for a baby girl.
Michael and Karolina Tomaro are locked in a court battle with Swedish authorities, which rejected their application to name their six-month-old child after the legendary rock band.
"It suits her," Karolina Tomaro, 27, said Tuesday of the name. "She's decisive and she knows what she wants."
Although little Metallica has already been baptized, the Swedish National Tax Board refused to register the name, saying it was associated with both the rock group and the word "metal."
Tomaro said the official handling the case also called the name "ugly."
The couple was backed by the County Administrative Court in Goteborg, which ruled on March 13 that there was no reason to block the name. It also noted that there already is a woman in Sweden with Metallica as a middle name.
The tax agency appealed to a higher court, frustrating the family's foreign travel plans.
"We've had to cancel trips and can't get anywhere because we can't get her a passport without an approved name," Tomaro said.

It'd have to be what your parents were listening to when you were born. So I'd be named Mantovani because it was 1960 and they only tuned into the Easy Listening station.
Some of those 1960s Easy Listening songs still haunt me even though I haven't heard them in decades. There was this version of Greensleeves that you couldn't get away from to save your life... it was just everywhere you went, for years. It was all violins but also had a 'funky' little harpsichord riff between verses. Forget the Beatles and Stones... that track was the real soundtrack to the 1960s

Considering how old some of us boardies are, there'd be a lot of Mantovanis, Rays (Conniff) and Percys (Faith) around here. Were I born a decade later, I'd probably be named Tomita

Probably Stuart, Andy, or Gordon since I was ... Born, Born in the 50s!
-
Goodness, I probably would have been named Eartha (Earth, Wind and Fire), Stevie (Wonder) or something. I don't think my parents were listening to Cat Stevens, alas.

Holy mother of God....I'm not the oldest bordie!!!! (1960)
I wanted to call my daughter "Hermoine" after the song "Letter to Hermoine" on Space Oddity, and yes....I actually love the name.
"Letter To Hermoine"
The hand that wrote this letter
Sweeps the pillow clean
So rest your head and
read a treasured dream
I care for no one else but you
I tear my soul to cease the pain
I think maybe you feel the same
What can we do?
I'm not quite sure what we're supposed to do
So I've been writing just for you
They say your life is going very well
They say you sparkle like a different girl
But something tells me that you hide
When all the world is warm and tired
You cry a little in the dark
Well so do I
I'm not quite sure
what you're supposed to say
But I can see it's not okay
He makes you laugh
He brings you out in style
He treats you well
And makes you up real fine
And when he's strong
He's strong for you
And when you kiss
It's something new
But did you ever call my name
Just by mistake?
I'm not quite sure what I'm supposed to do
So I'll just write some love to you

I'm suprised my mom didn't name me after Joan Baez.
But she did name me after Katherine Hepburn.

We (sort of) named our son after a band. Travis.
It was actually just a name we both liked, but it didn't hurt that we were fans of the band too.
I've got a friend who named his daughter Penelope Lane.

man if only my parents had named me Zoot... my actually namesake is one sir christopher wren.
-
If I was named after a band, it would be Reverend Horton Heat.

I have always thought that the name you are given by your parents should legally be a temporary name until you reach the age of majority, at which point you pick your own name. It might even work out that all you got was numbered at birth rather than named. So that if you were the first born child in your fmaily you would be called One Smith for example. Imagine how cool it would be to be able to say your name was Sixteen!
