They didn't last year. I went to two of the three nights and it was (at most) 50% the same both nights.
Just got tickets to Thursday, so 3 days for me!

Thursday

surprised to see the lack of forum members at these shows.

that's cuz this forum is saturated with jaded and self righteous indie-rock nerds who won't support "fun" music or great local bands unless it's fugazi or some new buzz band fugazi wannabe with a profile on pitchfork.com.
but that's just my take on it.

so far i count 10 people going to at least one show. you won't find many other roll calls with 10+ attendees, i don't think.

what makes you say that? lack of replies to this thread? that would be indicative of boardees lack of interest/willingness to reply.
with four sold-out nights, i suspect there will be plenty of boardees there... maybe they just won't wanna 'fess up to getting down to TC. well, i have no cred here anyways - i can't wait for tonight's show!

actually, you sound kinda jaded yourself... jaded about this message board :) (i do, for the most part, share your opinion though... oh well, comes with the turf. and nice turf it is, love the soundtrack!)

Actually, I'd say there are many folks on this forum going to the show, and if you'd been paying attention you'd have seen the long thread as boardies cheered along, happy for TC's success for selling out 4 shows. Even Seth, overlord of 9:30 chimed in to say TC were one of his favorite live acts of all time. In fact, I'd hardly call it a stretch to say there are far more Fugazi detractors on this board than those who would trash TC. And I say that Pitchfork gets bashed as much as any band or entity on this board.
I'm not sure what you mean when you say this board doesn't support "fun" music, what the hell is "fun" music anyway?
But that's just my take on it, jackass. Pay closer attention next time.

d.c.1 - you might have missed it, but there was another (http://www.930.com/cgi-bin/ubb-cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=014182) thread when the concerts were first announced. more buzz there.
(can we PLEASE get a search function in here?!?)

Jaded, nah, self-righteous..perhaps a bit. I've got nothing but good will for (nearly) all, but when someone comes along with 40 posts or whatever and starts calling the whole board nerds or dorks or whatever and whatnot i can't help myself. Gotta spend a little time in the sandbox before you can start throwing sand around. :D

ah, you called out my low post count. touche. but isn't that the preferred method of vengeful response from the regular internet message board dork?
lol, anyway just taking the piss. not trying to have an internet fight here. maybe i'll see you at the show(s)?

Dangit I just could'nt resist the low post count comment. And this is really the only board I actually engage people on, so I learned all my bad manners here! All the other boards I read and post on are much dorkier than this one....people beeping and sqwawking about exchange servers and active directory, whatever that fuck that is.....or speakers or AV gear. This is the only place if ever use words like fuck, piss and jackass.
Actually I've never even heard Thievery Corporation! So I won't be there.....but am sure they'll be great shows so enjoy!
Read and post more often and next thing you know you can join me the when I start piling on Rhett, or yelling at Dupek to stop race baiting or posting all those stupid links.

I'm not quite sure how to take that.
My new year's resolution is to never change my screen name again. Which I really haven't done too too many times anyway.
-
A good show. Not a great show, but consistently good tonight. Sista Pat is the bomb. I want to be that cool in 20 years.
I was asking one of the ESL staff about the set list and he said that they planned on doing the same set list tonight (Thursday) as well. That's why they were denying set lists to fans.
Seth got some time as percussionist when he wasn't smoozing or taking pictures with the vips, which included chef Jose Andres from Jaleo/Zaytinya/Cafe Atlantico. I didn't recognize anyone else up there.
-
TC will be doing a discussion with the washingtonpost today.
from the wp:
"Rob Garza and Eric Hilton, who make up the innovative ensemble group called Thievery Corporation, will be online Thursday, Dec. 21, at 2 p.m. ET"
-
how long was TC's set last night?
-
main set was 1:20 (ended at 11:45'ish)
first encore was 30-40 mins
second encore was one song
rolled outta da club around 1:00
thievery delivered exactly what i expected, which was a lot. last year i saw them for the first time and expected to see two turntables and a microphone, so when a full band hit the stage they blew me away. this year i knew what to expect so they didn't get the surprise factor. solid show, i'd go back tonight if i could. between encores, that was some of the loudest cheering i have ever heard at the 930. projection system was impressive (as is always the case with TC): a 20-foot high pixel/lcd screen behind rob and eric, with the front of their dj both thingy being a continuation of the screen behind them.
got to the club at 8:30 and all rail space upstairs was occupied. good real estate on the floor dissappeared by the time the openers hit the stage (definitely worth checking out - argentinian reggae!). arrive early if you want a good spot. place was packed solid.
plan on going to the ELS after the show if you can (we didn't pay any cover). when i got there the two jamaican MCs were performing. band was hanging out at the back of the main floor side room.
didn't make it home until 3:00. at work this morning. at gogol the previous night. i think i deserve a prize for hardcoreness/stupidity.
-
did they keep ESL open past the usual 2 am weeknight closing hour?
-
i'll be there tonite. Thx Verny, your new CD is the Shiz.
-
Did anyone catch what sort of merchandise they had for sale? Any posters?
I know pulling a setlist for a 2.5+ hour show from memory would be hard but any standout songs? Give me something to wet my appetite even more!
-
Oh man! I can't wait for Saturday!
How was the crowd? Were people dancing or was everyone just standing? I'm really hoping for some ENERGY!
-
lily1: they might have kept it open a little past 2, but i didn't check the time when we left.
peabody:
- i didn't check out the merch booth up close, but from my spot on the balcony rail i could see it. they only had two TC shirts and the usual assortment of 930 gear. i couldn't see if they had CDs or other stuff on the table.
- setlist excerpt: they played lebanese blond, richest man, and a lot of brazilian, reggae and french crap :p
lukas: crowd was packed in, people were dancing/grooving on the spot as best they could. lots of energy, see my previous post about loud cheering.
-
anyone remember how much shirts were?
-
from the washington post chat:
Washington, D.C.: How much are you planning on changing up the set lists for this string of shows at 9:30?
Eric Hilton: We'll be doing an almost identical set each night. There may be an extra song or two on Friday and Saturday b/c we can play later. I hope people will enjoy the same set regardless.
-
-
eric? as in eric hilton? as far as i know, he's not a member of this board...
-
copy and paste from the washington post chat: talking about drums and percussions at last night's show, rob wrote:
Yeah It was a shame when Seth jumped in there, ruined the whole show
assholes
-
will there be pictures posted? i went yesterday (wednesday)
-
Looks like I will be there tonight (thursday). Hanging by the board like always...
-
pictures aren't posted anywhere on 930.com, so if you want pix you're going to have to wait for someone to post them on flickr or some other online photo gallery.
-
Sweetcell - based on your earlier post, to get a decent spot on the floor (i.e., front 50%, centerish) I need to be in place before 9:00. Sound right?
-
yup, that was the deal last night. the opener, Federico Aubele, is worth checking out so you want to be there by 9 anyways.
the floor will be packed, you'll be shoulder-to-shoulder, and you'll enjoy every second of it.
-
Thanks. Can't wait.

tonight was better than last night-better sound, better crowd, better energy. same exact set list, as expected. no seth though.
tonight (friday) should blow the roof off the club.
-
i knew they would do the same set every night. probably the same set they did last year. not that i don't like them.

There was something different last night, they were talking about someone doing something special just for that show (thursday). No clue what though. Was a great sounding show, great set too.
Still would love to have heard 2001 Spliff Odyssey.
-
Agreed - the energy was great last night. Bassist went big, and musicians and singers seemed particularly locked in. The show had a nice burn and was cracking by the end.
Have fun this weekend.

Yes! That was it.

he's done that at lollapalooza this summer and then the one-off shows they did earlier this year. it was just him earlier this year, but i like how he and val double up on it now.
-
last year was heavier on cosmic game material. this is more varied and indicative of their catelogue. i wish they would feature sista pat a bit more for these shows. that woman rocks.

hi - i did not attend wednesday or thursday, but am headed to tonight's and saturday's show. did see the trio of 2005 shows as well. would you say that the material they are playing for this stand of shows is more mellow/dubby, a la The Mirror Conspiracy & Sounds From the Thievery Hi-Fi? I do hope so, but I suppose I love them so much at this point that they could armpit fart The Battle Hymn of the Republic and I would still be psyched.
Thanks for any further info you can give.

38.45 was played, several older ones (I am not that good on the album vs. songs). Good mix I thought.

So how was the show last night? ;)
-
probably the best night for federico auberle thus far. and i think i lean towards thursday's performance for thievery corporation. though last night was close, very close.
although they had more time last night, they did not add on any extra songs.
most excellent crowd. even the boy stayed up front the whole time to hang with the feverishly dancing crowd-and he hates crowds. it was very much a hug your neighbor crowd.
i have to pass on tonight, unfortunately. family events north of baltimore mean i won't get back in time for auberle and will probably miss half of thievery's set. so that means one of you needs to give me a full report.
-
I put this on "Hey Seth" but its probably better served here:
A electronic thank you note for Seth:
Seth, thanks for booking 4 nights of Thievery Corporation. Hope its been as fun for you as it's been for us. I ache all over for all the dancing I've done for the last 3 nights!
Can I make a request-would it be possible for them to always do an end of year show? I'm guessing 4 nights in a row next year might not be possible, but at least 1 or 2 shows. Start making it an annual event of sorts!
Thanks again!
Your loyal bulletin board reader and 930 club attendee,
Lily
-
i agree. i attended friday night and it was some of the most fun i've had all year at a show. if they can sell it out year after year, why not bring the band back for 3 or 4 nights every year? what a tradition.
-
sooooo, how was the last show? any special guests?
also - could someone please remind me of the name of the brazilian-flavored TC song that Karina sings, with the sing-along line "la dee la laaaaa" that she always gets the crowd to join in on. thanks :)
-
Sweetcell, I THINK that song is called Exilo. But I could be wrong.
Anyway, the show last night was great. Definitely on my top 5 of the year list. Two encores- the first was a birthday celebration for Rob, and the second featured a naked bass player.
Awesome show. I will post the setlist later.

Ugh, it was an OK show. I'm not sure how people get very excited about this "band"? I hope not the music...'cause their music lacks imagination and personality. Downtempo/chill out music doesn't have to be this dull...

lol, the only person who sounds dull here is you my friend. were you even AT the show(s)? i saw about 1,200 people going absolutely apeshit for the band (btw, how are they not a band?). i guess they're all wrong.
-
Yes, I was at the Saturday show. I actually thought the crowd was very tame after the main set. Definitely not in the apeshit state you were talking about...maybe the other nights were?
Even my favorite bands have disappointed me live...lots of them in fact...
So what excites you about TC? That was my question.

well, i'm not going to try to convince you that the show rocked, 'cause it seems like you're hating on a lot of live shows anyway.
you say this band is "dull" and "uninteresting"? name another "downtempo/chillout" artist that is less dull and more interesting than thievery corporation? zero 7? nice but disposable. kruder and dorfmeister? nice but way boring, and haven't done shit in almost 10 years as a duo. air? nice but running out of ideas and overrated. gotan project? cool, but one-trick-pony. i mean who else is really doing anything innovative in "downtempo" music anymore besides thievery?
here are just a few things i find exciting about thievery corporation:
1: the band is constantly working and constantly evolving. four critically acclaimed albums. each album better and more expansive than the one before. two great remix albums. two classic dj albums. endless classic singles. all in a 10 year span and the band's fan base and profile still grows year by year.
2. thievery touch on so many music styles, and their sound is infinite, whereas other "downtempo" groups are stuck in the same clichéd rut. who else mixes brazilian, jamaican, middle-eastern, indian, hip-hop, rock etc.? what other "downtempo" band is respected by so many music luminaries? people like david byrne, perry farrel, bebel gilberto, flaming lips, calexico seem proud to work with and call thievery "peers."
3: the band own a record label, esl music who release a ton of excellent downtempo music from around the world. 10 years strong and esl music is probably the best and most prolific downtempo/lounge label ever.
4: their live shows are among the best in live music today. name just one other "downtempo/chillout" group that brings nearly a dozen support members on tour and can play for almost 3 hours at such a high energy level? what other group, from any genre, can sell out four nights at the 930 club nearly a month prior to the actual performance dates?
5: band leaders eric hilton and rob garza are constantly involved in socially conscious endeavors and projects. what other "downtempo/chillout" group have the political savvy and influence of thievery corporation? what other "downtempo/chillout" group have organized a massive anti-war protest concert on the national mall? who else are official UN spokespersons, doing tv ads for food aid, and even traveling to famished african territories as goodwill ambassadors with UN personnel?
dude, you're selling the band short and frankly it just sounds like you're a hater. why did you even go to the show anyway?
-
I'm not a hater :) I guess should have just kept the comments/questions to myself. I am actually a casual listener of TC. They are capable of delivering an almost perfect album (Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi). I guess I was expecting a different experience...what I got in the show was a number of mediocre vocalists, dancehall reggae acts, and a belly dancer which made me feel like I was at a Mutaytor show (not a good thing). I am also not convinced that the two guys from TC did anything live. I don't doubt their popularity, but I sometimes ask myself why other shows by other fun bands (such as Los Amigos Invisibles) are not well attended, and they're much more fun and danceable.
But yeah...I never should have called them dull or uninteresting (well mebbe the last couple albums?) haha.
Air were actually pretty good last time I saw them...they disappointed me with 10,000 Hz (still hate it to this day).
I went to about 80 shows this year and I was pleased with 95% of them, so this was a real bummer (though I actually liked the entire encore...and that's enough to make me not want my money back) ;)
-
anyone know the name of the band that opened for them on sat?
-
Federico Aubele
-
it's a good thing i kept my trap shut about what i thought about rob garza's psychedelic rock side project Dust Galaxy. because based on whats up on the groups myspace

BTW, this was what they played on Saturday the 23rd. Looks to be the same as what was posted above, with "Revolution Solution" subtracted and "Illumination" added.
