Who is in? I have a high excitment level for this one.
-
I will be there. Probably in my usual spot upstairs on a barstool.
-
Oh, hell yeah.
-
I'll be there. I'm super psyched, but super bummed about a midnight start time. Work is not going to be fun the following morning...
-
I had a rare moment of foresight and decided to take Friday off.
-
oh hell yes i will be there. :D
-
indeed.
-
if steve mackay comes through for me, i will be there.
-
I'll be there.
-
i'm in. i was going to have a pre-party at my place, but looks like that will be political challenging now... dang. next time.
alternate: anyone up for catching a drink beforehand? how about DC9, i might be meeting someone there anyways.
on the bright side: i usually have a 8:30 AM meeting every friday, but this week's was cancelled... sleep in here i come! :D
-
I'll be out of town hanging out with my mum at that time, and she's older AND crazier than Iggy.
-
That's not a bad idea, although I was considering leaving my house around 11 that night. Of course, if you plan something, that might change my mind!

Yours truly will be in the building. I will go APE. SHIT. once the opening riff from "Down On The Street" permeates the air . . . .
-
I'm ready.
-
Does she jump up and down and basically throw herself across the room? The last time I saw Iggy play, it literally looked like something was trying to split him open and crawl out.

i'd be down for calling a pre-party at DC9, but one question in my mind is timing. do peeps have any interest in the opening acts? anyone ever heard of them before? or are people planning on showing up in time for the stooges?
-
i'm gonna take a guess from looking at their websites that sistas in the pit and the high class elite are complete, utter garbage.
wanna see some great openers for the stooges? go to the velvet lounge and see VAZ (GSL/Load/Narnack) and TODD (Southern) before heading to the 930, if you don't mind spending $7 to see awesome amrep-style noise-rock in the vein of the butthole surfers, melvins, cop shoot cop, cows, jesus lizard, unsane, etc.
-
i was going to take off friday, but it's a holiday for good friday...
-
What's the over/under on Seth sitting in for Scott on a tune?

I miss those bands. Cop Shoot Cop were so great. Why can't they open for the stooges?

This is the case for my boyfriend as well, but unfortunately, not for me. Who gives good friday off? He works for a labor union. I guess a lot of them must be catholic.

for anyone looking to pre-party a little: i'll be at DC9 around 10 pm, probably stay there until 11:15-11:20 (i'd like to get to the 930 in time to get a semi-decent spot). to one and all: if you have the time and inclination, do drop by and say hi. i'll be wearing a yellow t-shirt.
reminder: bring ear-plugs. the stooges are notoriously loud. your eardrums will thank you.
-
can't wait
-
omg i'm gonna be a mess friday. i thought the show started at 8pm. it's gonna be a pain trying to get a cab after the show. i may have to drive.
this will be my first time seeing them live
-
I was going to propose a pre-party also. I guess it's been decided that DC9 is the place?
-
I'll be there. May dip out a bit early though depending on how long the set runs.
-
That's the plan.
-
what's a good excuse if I want to call in sick Friday? :)
-
I'm going to sit at home and listen to my Mason Jennings records in protest of his being dropped as opener.
-
I bought tickets, then sold em and then used the money to buy tickets for Silversun Pickups and Tragically Hip.
late shows in DC...should've known i was going to decide against it sooner or later!
-
Religion: Good Friday. You have to be quiet and sit in church between 12-3.

Leaving for Boston today to see the show there. Too young (somehow) to have seen the Stooges. Iggy Pop is one of the best shows I've ever seen.

npr is broadcasting this tonight just in case anyone missed out on tickets. i hope they have the show for download afterwards.
-
The Stooges on NPR? That is funny. That's one show that seems like it would be useless to listen to online. You need to be there, or it's pointless.

Uh oh, they called Steve Albini a "producer." Beware the wrath of The Mighti Albini
-
I'm there...I just don't know when...........

well, "decided" might not be the right term since as far as i can tell, i threw the idea out there an no one objected. yes, a technicality, i realize :)
that said, i'll be at the DC9 at 10:00, look for a yellow t-shirt. do come over and say hi, i don't bite (well, usually, exception made for the asses of alt-country loving married men along second-level balconies...)
-
Holy hell. Iggy is the man.
-
Wow.
-
Wii!
-
 says it all. good night folks.
-
I'm fucking deaf.......and smiling from ear to ear!!.......'nite folks.....
-
what, uh, everyone else said.
wow.
-
Iggy fucking pop... Thanks Dave, Josh, Nick, and everyone else for taking care of things for us. Did I mention Iggy Fukcing Pop?
-
Great fucking show!!!
-
That fucking ruled! Moe discussion once my hearing returns and I finally wake up.
Out of my mind on Saturday night! 1970 rollin' in sight!
-
Yes....everyone who sees Iggy live sees the light. The man brings it. And he turns 60 this month. Truly freak of nature.
Thanks Seth for making this happen.
-
Yes, thanks to Seth for having them in the smallest venue of the tour by far. And thanks to the Stooges for saving the new material for the tail end of the set (which to my surprise came off surprisingly well and didn't affect the intensity of the set at all).
-
AAAHHH!!! Yes!
I'm so glad he could play the 9:30 Club--thanks Seth and crew!!!!
-
That was insane, wasn't it? I love seeing the crowd so into a show, and it was incredible to watch the wave of humanity from upstairs.
How about Watt? He is the perfect "hired gun" for the Stooges.
"Wow" sums it up! I wonder if the ringing in my ears will stop before work on Monday.
-
i guess there were no anti-bush rants last night? (http://www.examiner.com/a-659696~Iggy__Stooges_have_a_soft_spot_for_the_GOP__lobbyists.html?cid=all-hp-yeas_and_nays)
Iggy, Stooges have a soft spot for the GOP, lobbyists
So this is how punks grow old: They stay in chic, modern hotels, hang out with banking lobbyists and reveal their Republican allegiances.
Punk legends Iggy & the Stooges, who played the 9:30 Club Thursday night, have been hanging their tattered hats this week at the newly spiffed up Park Hyatt in the West End.
Wednesday night, the Stooges, including original members Ron and Scott Ashton, were sitting down to dinner on the outside patio at the hotel??s Blue Duck Tavern, when out came Iggy Pop himself.
He was ??gimping through the lobby? wearing only one Birkenstock sandal with the other foot bare, said Erick Gustafson, a lobbyist with the Mortgage Bankers of America, who was himself having dinner at the time and just so happens to be a huge fan.
??He looks and walks exactly like you??d expect him to look and walk,? Gustafson said.
Iggy hung out for about 40 minutes before going back upstairs to do whatever it is that he does, but the Ashton brothers stayed out long after dinner, whereupon Gustafson and Dan Berger of the National Association of Federal Credit Unions joined them for drinks.
As the temperature dropped, the party moved inside, and the punks and policy wonks continued to enjoy wine and spirits into the wee hours.
Among the biggest surprises from the rockers? They love jazz great John Coltrane, and they??re both Republicans.
??Ron was pretty knowledgeable about lawmakers and policy,? Gustafson said.
Not very rock ??n?? roll of them. At least they could have heaved a TV out the window for old times?? sake.
-
Man, that just fucking killed.
And one thing in response to that article - of course they're fans of Coltrane. Steve Mackey's playing on Funhouse is completely Coltrane-esque. Plus the music in general - they create massive grooves - basically lighting bonfires - and Iggy kind of soloes over it.
-
Yeah....great show by the Stooges. I'm very happy to have seen it at the 9:30. Although, my back is none too happy with me for getting front and center.
No love for Sistas In The Pit....?? The bass player (is she Bootsy's niece/daughter/cousin?) may have been the most excited person in the club last night.
-
that was pretty wild - worth catching an early flight back from St Louis for! I can't believe Iggy is 60...puts a lot of younger artists to shame
-
I was diggin' the Sistas and picked up the disc... Talented bunch but in need of a little focus and improvements in the songwriting dept.
Now the other band that night was a waste of space... Someone needs to tell them that Halloween has come and gone. It was like watching a horrid New Yorks Dolls tribute band attempting to do their own originals. The fact tbey didn't realize their alloted time slot was up smacked of unprofessionalism
-
random iggy factoid... my uncle went to high school with James Osterburg, needless to say they took divergent career paths ;)
-
I can't believe I didn't see you! I was up there the entire time as well.

I loved the older, gray-haired, British guy in the sportcoat. He was everywhere; apparently engaged as the "fixer."
Cymbals need tightening? Check.
Sound levels on the monitors? Check.
Extra water? Check.
Personal bodyguard? Check.
New mic stand? Check.
The Sistas need More towels? Check.
Someone needs to stick a hand down Iggy's pants to keep him from falling? Check
-
npr stream (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=9234325) surprised the setlist isn't included maybe an update is on it's way.
and isn't the british guy the one that wrote that infamous stream of conscious tour rider (http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/1004061iggypop1.html)
-
that rider appears to be as famous as the band now
jos even has his own website (http://www.josgrain.com/)

Yeah, that Mr. Belvedere cat was killin' me. He was multi-tasking like no one's business.

I was 5'-6' back from the stage just on Iggy's right. I was close enough to touch Iggy on a few occasions; however, the idea of touching Iggy just didn??t appeal to me.

Great show
My only question: why did they play "I Wanna Be Your Dog" twice?
-
So I was by two black guys up front last night, and I was so tempted to ask if either was The Director. But I thought nothing would sound lamer than a geeky white guy drenched in sweat asking two big black dudes in the pit if they posted regularly on a message board. Were you up front at all?
I have to saw, I was bummed I didn't get a chance to meet up with anyone. I tried leaving early with the intent on stopping by DC9, but traffic and no parking had me getting to the club just prior to the Stooges hitting the stage.
Oh, and I know why they played "Dog" twice...BECAUSE IT FUCKING SLAYS!

The one with the shades on. That would have been me. I was left center of the stage about 10' - 15' back.
And as far as "Dog" twice, I was thinking "Damn, that shit rocks! I wouldn't mind hearing that again." Sure enough, my wish was granted . . . . . My ears are still halfway ringing & I fuckin love it. I'm still on a high from the show. That shit was  !!!
On another note, SUPER shout out to my man S Dot Cell. I got a chance to build & cool out with him last night. Real good people right there. Can't wait for Wolfmother . . . .
I see a pretty thing . . . . . near the wall . . . NEAR THE WALL!!! . . . . NEAR THE WALL! NEAR THE WALL!
COTDAMN Iggy Pop fuckin' rocks!
-
looking at previous setlists the second "I Wanna Be Your Dog" is standard as was the order of much of the songs. This time they are swapping out some of the songs from Pop's last solo disc "Skull Ring" for the new Stooges record.
-
what amuses me is that right at beginning of their set, while the band was sauntering on stage to take their places, there was Iggy jumping up and down like a anxious little kid on the side of stage waiting to get the party started.
-
i have a feeling that last night's show is going to make a lot of people's "best shows of 2007" list. iggy is such an amazing performer.

the only person that made it was TheDirector - damn cool dude, had ourselves a rip-roaring time. saw Joe M inside the club and chatted outside after the show, then bumped into kosmo and ggw™.
oh... good morning y'all :)
-
Why is it that I just cannot stop smiling today?
-
You think if we asked nicely they would do an encore performance tonight?
-
Ears still ringing.
I think my brain has melted.
Worth every penny.
-
unless they add some quality openers to Wolfmother we should go stink up some joint prior to the show.
-
i think it's safe to say this will end up being one of my favorite shows of the year. :D
that first band was a complete and utter joke. i thought it was hilarious every time the bassist tried to get the crowd involved by getting the handclap going and everyone would just continue doing what they were doing which was either stare blankly back (dudes looking at the backup singers most likely) with arms folded or be talking amongst themselves. i clocked em in at under a 25 minute set thank god.
sistas in the pit got a good crowd response and i thought deservedly so. they were way pumped to be there and i thought warmed up the crowd well. impressive looking mohawk on the drummer by the way.
iggy and the fucking stooges. GOD DAMN. i was on the floor center and i noticed a lot of people jockeying for position. and of course none of that mattered when the band came out and started playing because it was just a total frenzy down there. i don't know what it looked like from the balconies but people were going nuts. and rightly so because the stooges went for the god damn kill straight from the beginning with loose, down on the street, 1969, tv eye, i wanna be your dog. it was just bang bang bang one after another. fun house. no fun. dirt. just incredible. i'm still not a fan of the new record but i found myself nodding along to the new ones. i'd never seen iggy before but he's definitely amongst the best frontmen i've ever seen. and i refuse to believe he's 60. big props to mike watt and the asheton brothers for leveling the place. the sound was mean and loud just like i expected. and it was also great to see a wide mix of people there. everybody seemed to get along and i don't think i saw 1 fight the whole night. and finally, thank you to seth for bringing the stooges to the 930 club. what an amazing night you enabled us to see!

I know Iggy is clean nowadays but he definitely wasn't "Saying No To Crack" last night :p
-
the audience was a pretty wide ranging in age as well, it's not often at the club where i'm in the middle as far as age goes. didn't see any "celebs" but the guitarist for the Slickee Boys was there...

The shit Iggy pulled at beginning of their set at Randalls Island in '04 was fucking classic, Little Steven was backstage interviewing a couple people (shown to the audience via monitors) and trying to stage a big buildup to the Stooges set (as they were the headliners) when I see the guys tuning up their instruments and then out of nowhere Iggy busts out from the middle of the stage area looking like an uncaged tiger, goes to the mic and says something to the effect of "let's fucking go" and they started playing right over Little Steven's yapping ass HAHA

It looked kick ass from the balcony. I was (as usual) on one of the bar stools upstairs above the VIP. I was sitting there (well kind of sitting anyway) really wishing that I didnt have 50+ pieces of titanium inside me and that I could be down there with my people! Iggy on stage made me and my friend Kim forget all about the drunk douche bag asshole earlier in the evening. This will be one of those shows that gets talked about for a long time.

When I got there at about 11:20 or so, there was some drunk guy who, I guess, pushed someone and was yelling at a cop outside. He looked a little ridiculous. Was that the guy?
-
Yeah, the tough guy pushed Kim off her barstool for who cares why. I was the long hair guy with glasses talking to Josh and the cop about the deal. It was all taken care of very well and the night all in all was great. Seeing Iggy made me realize that I am not the only person 50+ who still does not know what he wants to be when he grows up! :)
-
How is Iggy 60? The last show I saw was the Pogues, and Shane just turned 50 and had to be pushed in a wheelchair up to the mic. Imitating the moves Iggy did last night leaves me winded after about 30 seconds. And I had those foam earplugs, and still have a bit of ringing this morning. I don't think he's human.
-
I bet Iggy could get one hell of an endorsement deal from geritol should he ever venture down that lane!

No one has bothered to discuss the most important thing pertaining to last night's display of rockdom. Who's gonna get mp3s of the show from last night??? (Kosmo, I may be talking to you here) I'm listening to the stream on NPR right now, & it rocks. But if they were streaming the show last night live from 9:30, SOMEBODY's gotta know the cat that was working the soundboard last night.
I MUST  have a copy of last night's show. I'll even pay for it. Somebody get at me . . . .
-
i have nothing much to add here, other than to say that this was one of the best shows i've ever seen. ron asheton sounded absolutely monstrous, scott asheton pounded the shit out of his drums, mike watt was the perfect replacement for dave alexander, and iggy still is the best rock 'n' roll performer alive. i saw the stones in 2002, and while that was quite good, it was nowhere near as powerful and awe-inspiring as the stooges. i think i had shivers during all of the songs from fun house.
-

Why mp3? Lossless! :p
But a recording of this show would be sweet. Iggy really put on an amazing performance.
-
My one complaint of the show would be no songs from the Raw Power era. They should just suck it up and put those into the set. I'd love to have heard "Cock in my Pocket", or even better, "I Gotta Right", which is prolly my most favoritest Stooges song ever.

C.I.M.P. would've blown the roof off. Metallic K.O., despite its poor production,is one of the most spun records in my collection over the years.Up there with the best records ever made IMHO. Hell, you even get a kickin version of Louie Louie. Timeless!!

It's a great, balanced review and how cool is it to be able to read the work of someone is as smart and still as committed as Jenkins is? And who actually saw the fabled '73 Kennedy Center show. Now that's a double bill!
Listening to "The Weirdness," the first Stooges album in 34 years, longtime fans might wonder if Iggy Pop and his recently reunited cohorts remember how to be the band they were in the early 1970s. Any such doubts were quickly banished Thursday night at the 9:30 club, where the proto-punk musicians' reflexes proved undiminished. The band's 80-minute set was hampered only by "The Weirdness's" second-string material.
Seen up close, Iggy looks like the 60-year-old he'll become later this month, but he's as limber and energetic as he was in the Stooges' heyday. Sleek, shirtless and a bit simian, Iggy prowled the stage, wearing low-slung pants that threatened to slip all the way off by the time the show ended with the evening's second, sloppier version of "I Wanna Be Your Dog." He threw himself into the audience a few times, and welcomed fans onstage to dance to the teen anti-anthems "Real Cool Time" and "No Fun."
Those songs are all from the quartet's 1969 debut, but the Stooges took just as much from their 1970 follow-up, "Fun House." (The band entirely bypassed "Raw Power," the David Bowie-produced 1973 album for which guitarist Ron Asheton was demoted to bass.) Drummer Scott Asheton switched fluidly from the metronomic beats of the first album to the more swinging rhythms of the second, and saxophonist Steve Mackay joined for "Fun House's" title song and "I Feel Alright." The only problem was that the set peaked there, before the band trudged through such lesser new material as "Trollin'."
Inevitably, the Stooges weren't as threatening as at their last D.C. gig, opening for Mott the Hoople at the Kennedy Center in 1973. That show ended prematurely, when Iggy appeared to be bleeding and the band's power was cut. (From this writer's vantage point, the red stuff on his chest looked more like fruit-pie filling than blood.)
Iggy's not as self-destructive these days, but the main difference between the two shows is that venues like the 9:30 club now exist. The larger world may never accept the Stooges, but there's a part that has.

Personally I think Jenkins is your typical self important jaded rock critic and usually I've no time for his been-there done-that ramblings.
But this time he got it just right.

Saw the show in Boston the next night. Very similar setlist except no repeat of Wanna Be Your Dog. Unfortunately, it was in a crappy venue that made me miss 9:30. Excellent show by the Stooges though. From the newspaper review it sounded like everything was similar.
-
what venue was it and what was wrong it?
-
i believe that the boston show was at the orpheum, a seated theater rather similar to the warner in dc.
this was a show that i really appreciated seeing in a GA setting. i don't understand why they (supposedly) insisted on only playing seated theater venues.
-
Orpheum. Very nice to look at but not a great place for a rock show. Any drinking was limited to a very crowded lobby. I heard previously that the sound there was very good but it really wasn't. Confined to very small balcony seats - no one in my row seemed to be more than average weight and height yet we were packed in like sardines. Alot of this stuff doesn't matter when the show starts, I know. I'm just saying that other venues I've been to in my life are a bit more comfortable.

same thing with a lot of the seats in fenway... i guess that's the problem of going to historic (i.e. old) venues - back in the day people ate less, exercised more and weren't as tall. the average american today just doesn't fit into those seats anymore.

I couldn't stand him when he wrote for the CityPaper in the early/mid 90s. Not that everything he writes is crap, but he tended to rub me the wrong way with a lot of his coverage.

How do I downlaod the file w/o having to install their damn toolbar or add in?
-
Haha...I struggled with that too.
Directly to the right of the MegaUpload logo, there's a "Download" button and a text field. Just enter the three large letters in the text entry box and hit "Download."

You, sir, are a BAD fuckin' man. Not Jean Claude Van Damme circa Bloodsport bad, but even better. Like Tom Morello or Jay-Z bad. :D
Either way, thank you, is what I'm trying to say.

This is one of those very few acts that no one could call you stupid for doing so, S Dot Cell. If I didn't have a full calendar tonight, I'd probably be on the first thing smoking my damn self.

Fucking hell...I can't compare the Philly show to the DC show since I missed it, but this was truly one of those performances I will NEVER forget. High Class Elite and Sistas in the Pit both sucked donkeys, but the Stooges rocked like mofos. They opened with "Loose" and then did stuff like "Down On the Street", "I Wanna Be Your Dog", etc. (which were all great), but I thought they totally killed it on stuff like "Dirt" and "Funhouse". Good gawd, the crowd went apeshit during "Real Cool Time"...there must have been about 75 people on stage and Iggy thanked the "Philly Spazz-dancers". Hilarious. SO...who from the DC show got up on stage? If I had been a bit closer my ass would have been right up there. We had a 5-song encore, no repeat of "I Wanna Be Your Dog". "My Idea of Fun" really is a shit song, but some of the other new ones ("I'm Fried") were passable. Still, when they played "1970" I lost my shit. So damn sore today from jumping up and down. Great Philly crowd too. Random celeb sighting: Bam Margera and his dippy little wife. Can't wait to see how soon those two split up.
-
yup, that sounds about right - now you know why we here in DC yammered on about this show for two days and thanked Sethwald profusely. truly an incredible performance.
damn, i knew i should have gone to philly last night, 9 AM meeting be damned...
-
Did the Philly show ever sell out? Just feel like torturing myself after the fact.
A friend of mine is going to the Detroit show tomorrow. Can't wait hear to about that one!
-
Seeing The Stooges is awesome and all, but seeing them in Detroit would rule.

I don't think it ever did sell out...there was actually quite a bit of room to move around on the floor, and even though it was a good turnout, it never seemed packed the way that a sold-out 9:30 show gets packed. You all should have come up! I would love to know how the Philly show compared to the DC show. I want to say we got a longer setlist (they played for 1 hour and 20 minutes).

1:20:00 total (with encore), or main set only? in DC, we got just under 80 minutes total, main set + encore.

From your earlier account, I'd say minus the reprise of "I Wanna Be Your Dog" that you probably saw the same show in the same song order.
-
The songs were definitely in a different order...1969 was in the encore as well. It was 1 hour and 20 minutes, but the breaks between the main set and the encores were literally maybe a minute or 2 tops. I think we may have gotten 2 more new songs (or maybe stuff from Skull Ring...I should check on that). No matter what, it was a friggin' great time. So glad that I got to see them. The Electric Factory isn't my favorite venue, but it was fine for what it was. TLA is much better though.
-
We had the two Skull Ring songs too (Skull Ring & Electric Chair). I just don't think anyone mentioned them.

How was the volume and sound in Philly? Here, the bass made it feel like I was wearing a Magic Fingers bed.
-
over an hour and twenty minutes, think of how many quarters you saved!
damn, i knew i should have gotten the girl to come along, she loves those things.
-
The sound was pretty decent I guess, I didn't find it to be particularly great but at the same time it wasn't terrible either. You could hear the bass, but it definitely was not in the foreground. Iggy's vocals were strong, and then of course Ron Asheton's guitar was right up there too. I was maybe 20 feet in front of the soundboard, so I would imagine I had a pretty decent spot relative to some of the other places in the venue. Watt definitely did a phenomenal job on the bass, and at one point he flipped out and was swinging it around...then he put it back on and kept slamming himself into the amp.
