I saw some article on that a couple days ago.  I don't have time to watch the video right now, but I read somewhere that has over 30 Million records and can't get $3 Mil for them.  Sad.

If you do get the chance, check it out. Absolutely astounding. Estimated worth of over 50 million yet can't even get 3, sad indeed.

Where does that 50 million number come from, I saw it mentioned but whats the source.  There just arent a lot of records that are worth a whole lot. You have to think that a large percentage of that isnt worth much more than $1.  Still an impressive collection.

There are several well used editions for pricing vinyl. You gotta consider even if the majority are around 1$ there are some worth thousands. Offhand I can't think of the names of the most commmonly used but can get them for you. I'll ask my friend Rob who purchased several for his used music business Rebound Records.

I can PM you if you are looking to see what somethings worth resale. I'm sure that figure came from something along those lines. I have no doubt the cost is not inflated much for shock value.

However, it's all supply, demand. If he felt like selling piece by piece, I think he'd do well.

You can tell he has passion for it,its' a shame he has nobody who truly appreciates what's there. I know I do, but don't yet have that much spare change lying around

I only have about 60 albums on vinyl and I a lot of those are GBV albums off ebay that I actually listen to, but most records I see, unless recent new ones, just dont go for that much money.  He said his most expensive one was worth around $6000 (which is only a couple thousand more than you might get for a copy of GBV's propeller).  I just dont see it adding up to 50 million, 3 million sure, either way, maybe in my price range with a couple more hundred years of work or more.

The video says it's about 2.5 million records - not 30 million.  1 million lps and 1.5 million singles.

Wasn't this collection on Ebay a few months back?

I like buying records as much as the next guy, but this sappier than an NBC olympic profile.

Yeah, it's the Record Rama guy.  I feel that guy's pain, but he's never going to get what he's asking for.

Collections like that make no sense... there is no physical way anyone could ever listen to even a fraction of those records in a lifetime.  So even if the price seems to make sense based on the unit price of the records, it doesn't make sense for the collection as a whole.   It's like an old car where the parts are worth more than the actual car.

An archive like that has historical value, and a museum ought to take it on.   But museums can't afford a price like that.

wonder why the Library of Congress isn't taking some of this off his hands

He's actually trying to unload the whole lot for 3 million because he's ill. Where a Jann Wenner when you need one?

Some backstory and an add'l vid here:

Doesn't the Library of Congress already have a copy of every record made?   Don't know if it's changed, but when we got our record copyrighted, we actually had to send in a copy.

I vaguely recall reading (last time this story came up) that the Library of Congress had tried to buy the collection, but the guy's asking price was too high.

"No, they (the L of C) made him a bullshit offer. Basically just wanted it as a donation. He can't do that because the collection has left him near broke," Sean, the guy who shot the video, told me in an email.

I'm not sure the L of C really needs to be paying this guy for his "Fat Elvis' Fried Banana Christmas Party" record.  He talks about all the stuff that he has that isn't on cd; I'm sure there are some gems, but I'll bet most of it isn't worth having.
