I don't really think of music when I'm having sex.  I don't know...I guess I'm just preoccupied with other thoughts.

But there was one time I was listening to Jeff Buckley, and a boyfriend made a surprise visit, and we happened to start heating things up, and midway we realised...once someone hears what we're listening to, there's really no question as to what's going on behind closed doors.  Jeff Buckley is trying-to-get-in-a-girl's-pants music, at the very least, for sure.

yeah man I know what you mean. On dates I'll throw on some Air, even a bit of Portishead once in a while. End it with some ambient stuff like Ulrich Schnauss... always makes for a good time.

You always throw in that special mix you have already made long ago for just such occasions.
Or throw in some some Jandek. I also agree with Darklands.

I tell ya, this is one way technology has improved things.   Back in the day, you'd be 20 minutes into things, a girl's legs over your shoulders and just getting into a rhythmic groove, and then you'd have to stop and go to the record player and turn the record over.  Or even worse, gingerly lift the record up by the edges and put it back in its sleeve and select another one.

My selections are kind of dated as sex with music sort of died once a kid came along.

 Things I remember working well:

 Portishead - Dummy
 Roxy Music - Avalon (duh)
 REM - Up
Peter Gabriel - Us, also Passion
 Smashing Pumpkins - Gish
 Radiohead - The Bends
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Morphine - Cure for Pain (something I guess thatguy and I have in common)
Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
Richard and Linda Thompson - Pour Down Like Silver

Sex music is one of those things that's hard to sometimes define. What's sexy to one person might not be sexy to another. So basically, I'm listing my favorites and either people will get it or not.

First of all, I noticed somebody already listed Mezzanine by Massive Attack, which was genius! I'll also recommend their albums Protection and Blue Lines. First time I ever had a guy over, Protection was the first album I put on and he was impressed. Honestly, any good trip hop is good for sex (Portishead, the first Esthero album, Tricky, ect...)

Okay moving onto my next favorite which is Depeche Mode. I'll be honest, they have four albums that are pretty good, dark and sexy... Black Celebration, Violator, Songs of Faith and Devotion, and Ultra. It just all depends on what sort of mood you're going for. Ultra is chilled, Violator is darkly delicious, SOFAD is rocking with a kinky twist (listen to In Your Room and you'll understand), and Black Celebration is just quiet, dark and moody (besides who can resist "Stripped").

Now I noticed some chatter about Nine Inch Nails. While yes "Closer" seems like an obviously give away, I think they have sexier songs. Their cover of Adam Ants' "Physical" and Queen's "Get Down, Make Love" are both pretty hot. I also love certain songs from Year Zero, The Slip, The Fragile, With Teeth and Pretty Hate Machine. So I suppose if you're going to play them, don't settle for just one album. You probably want to make a mix.

I also noticed somebody mentioned JAMC's The Darklands. That was pretty awesome. I would even say Psychocandy would be a good one. Along the same lines as JAMC, I would totally include The Cure's Disintegration on this list. The album has some pretty choice moments. Dark, atmospheric and rather eerie. Another album that comes to mind from a similar era is My Bloody Valentine's Loveless. My friend says it's a good one. But I haven't tried it yet.

As for other albums/artists... Interpol's Turn on the Bright Lights has some choice moments. I would even dare to suggest The Smiths Singles Collection or U2's Achtung Baby. And then you have typical fare such as Prince and Sade. I also think Leonard Cohen has some pretty sensual moments too.

Oh last one I thought of was The Last Temptation of Christ soundtrack. I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned this one yet. When I was in high school, a friend of mine told me that he swore by it. Sure it may be "world music" but it has some pretty cool power to it.

Reading this thread makes me see why my wife says (if she were in he market for it) she'd never have sex with anyone under 35.

I think we're both on the same level as Samantha's first paragraph.

It's always disturbing to be in semi-agreement with Rhett, so I'll say the music doesn't matter *that* much, but at the same time it does matter, because during a time of heightened senses if you've got good music on, you're going to enjoy the music much more, too, even if you think you're not listening to it.   I always associate certain songs with certain experiences many years later, even if it was just the latest crap on MTV, which we put on loud so the neighbors wouldn't hear.

I doubt many people have responded think it is that important, I certainly never did.  At the same time, being music fans it is only natural that the activities have mixed and it is natural to remember the times the results were good.  As someone else mentioned, there is music that now has some of those memories attached to it.

As I said the two don't mix any more for me now that there is a kid in the house and it's not something I ever think about.

It's a board of music fanatics... people here love to make lists above all else. If someone asked for a list of "songs to masturbate to on Friday nights when i am stuck home without a date" there would be a bevy of replies to that too.   Including one from Rhett expressing his and his wife's views on the matter.   ;)

I like all of the suggestions. I can't imagine banging with NIN going on in the background though? Seems like there would be blood...

Also, I can't imagine banging to Bob Marley? Chase those crazy Baldheads outta town? Crazy...Bald...Head? Thats aside from the wanna fall asleep factor reggae music brings.

I have to say my original favorite has been boards of canada or aphex twin but I'm going to give a couple of these a try and see what insues...

Marvin Gaye, Damien Rice, Jeff Buckley, Jeff Klein, Griffin House...etc etc.

i feel that if you need music for having sex to, then the sex is boring to you and you need something to pass the time while doing it.
try listening to your partner instead.  then record and sample out their animalistic noises onto a killer mix tape with public enemy as the backdrop.

Love Spirals Downwards - Idylls

dated a guy and he always would be playing LSD, Black Tape for A Blue Girl and Lycia. My favorite was always LSD. I recall Love Lies Crushing also being quite good but that might not be quite the correct band name.

Id say you prob cant go wrong with most artists on the Projekt label.

Thank god I am not having sex with any of you with your incredibly white bread boorish taste in sexy time music. You people do realize that music is supposed to ENHANCE the mood of said love making, right?

Marvin Gaye - He has the 2 best love making songs EVER; Let's Get It On & Sexual Healing)

Al Green - Let's Stay Together, Love and Happiness or Tired of Being Alone

Otis Redding - These Arms of Mine or That's How Strong My Love Is

 Sade - No Ordinary Love

Bill Withers - Ain't No Sunshine or Lovely Day

 Smokey Robinson - Crusin'

Chris Isaak - Wicked Game or Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing

Greggory Abbott - Shake You Down

 And just for good measure:

I haven't smoked weed in 3 years.
And there's your problem. Please smoke a joint ASAP and mellow out for your own good and the good of this board.

That "bro" joke was just waiting to be made. If it wasn't me, it was going to be the countless others who thought the same thing. Just be grateful you got an apology out of me to go along with it.

P.S. Deerhoof would be incredibly awkward.

Shadrach, it's to be expected that white people practicing to make white babies would listen to whitebread music.

Hey, Shadrach...every one you picked is right on...and I'd add:

Life's an Ocean - the Verve (just follow the bass line for the warm-up, gentlemen. It'll work every time.)

 Bullet Proof Love - Sade.

 ...just sayin.
