I'll get straight to the point... Is "The Great Destroyer" an atypical Low and for that matter slowcore album?
Low has been one of those bands I've heard about but never got around to checking them out... So when "California" appeared on a comp I was intrigued to check out more from them. This dare I say almost power pop like song immediately grabbed my attention and made me seek out TGD, an album which I immensely enjoy being it's well crafted, none of the songs being carbon copies of each other, not trendy, etc...
I willing offered to DJ their show and am pondering what to spin, as an entire night of slowcore bands would be kinda dull. Am I headed in the right direction by considering the following for between band listening?
Velvet Underground
Cardinal
The Dears
Ane Brun
The Good The Bad and The Queen
The Cassettes
etc...

Kosmo, those bands should be fine. I've seen LOW rock out but the last two times they put me to sleep (while I was standing!) It was quite embarrasing.

American Music Club
Red House Painters (some of their faster numbers)
Spiritualized
just some ideas...

You can never go wrong with Flipper.

Throw in some Weird Al.
-
Luna/Galaxy 500
-
Beekeeper.

The Great Destroyer is one of the great (no pun intended) ignored records of its year. It's not "atypical" but Low's earlier discography sounds markedly different. TGD was not a jump away from their slowcore sound altogether but a progression. If you like TGD, you'll enjoy their newest, Drums and Guns which sounds a little more like their classic material, but not a complete regression.
I think I wrote a review of TGD for BigYawn.

jag brings up exactly what i was pondering regarding a genre like slowcore, which is what is it's degrees of separation from other genre/sub-genres.
i.e how many degrees is shoegazer away from slowcore.
my approach to DJing is to try and not limit myself to just the category(s) a bands whose show I'm providing the tunes falls into. and beyond my initial list I was considering Skye, Charlie Sexton, Aberfeldy, The Autums, Emma Pollock.

Who the Hell knows! Even amongst we Shoegazers, there's disagreements with that whole chestnut of what is Shoegaze; a question that drives me nuts. Personally, I don't put a whole lot of stock on what constitutes (fill in the blank) this genre or that. It's too anal and not really all that important as far as I'm concerned. If it all sounds like it works together, than go with it. Besides, almost everyone likes a mix of genres.
A few other possibilities:
Yo La Tengo
M83
Ulrich Schnauss
Massive Attack
Thrushes (Baltimore Shoegazers)
Cowboy Junkies (bet a few of their fans will be there)
Morphine
The Morning After Girls
The Brian Jonestown Massacre (someting more laid back)
Dead Heart Bloom
Project Skyward
Bowery Electric
Douglas Heart (the band as oppossed to the man)
Bark Psychosis (something from "Codename: Dustsucker")
Cat Martino
Heather Duby
The Fakes
DeVotcKa
Barzin
Trembling Blue Stars
Longview
The Engineers
Hammock
Raymond Scott Woolson
God Is An Astronaut
Unisex
Monster Movie
Kosmo, if you are still familiarizing yourself with Low, I suggest that you check out "Things We Lost In The Fire". My favorite of theirs and of many others. Especially the song "Dinosaur Act". (Just be careful because it might blow out your bass if you crank it up too much. ;) )

Julee Cruise

My suggestions:
Pedro The Lion (they did a tour together)
Mogwai (they sited low as their favorite band)
Neil Young
Definitely play Weird Al's White & Nerdy!
Low has also said they are huge fans of Shellac and Fugazi.

they also have a song called "sandinista" on their new record, so some Clash would be appropriate.
