Title: MUSE to open for My Chemical Romance
Post by: Vas Deferens on December 20, 2006, 10:00:00 am
Yikes! The good news...it doesn't look like there will be a DC/Baltimore date...

"According to the band's management, additional dates will be announced in the coming weeks â?? and the next batch will feature openers Muse."

I'm guessing the DC date will be there.  I'd probably go - if I can watch from a safe distance.

Happily, I don't think I've ever heard either of these bands.

Never heard Muse, but I have heard My Chemical Romance and will admit that they do seem to be a significant step above their fall out boy type contemporaries.

from  MCR website (http://www.mychemicalromance.com/news#node_111):
"My Chemical Romance have just announced a full-scale headlining US tour in February and March. Rise Against will be the opening act on all of these dates. Stay tuned for more dates coming with Muse as the opener!"

presently,  announced (http://www.mychemicalromance.com/tour)  N. Am. dates run 2/22 thru 3/16 with no room to add new dates before taking off for euroland.  so those "more dates" with muse won't be until mid-april at the earliest.

it's been a while since i've been more excited about an opener than the main act.  muse are brillant.  a great mix of prog rawk, classical and electronica.  should appeal to radiohead fans (then again, if you like radiohead you're probably already aware of muse...).   looks like these shows are going down in large arenas, so expect any local date to be at Verizon :-/

No, all those people at the Springfield Metro in their Caps jerseys scare me, so I go home and into hiding at the end of the day.   :p

That song was horrible. Is all their stuff that bad?

seriously, i rarely talk shit about bands on here because we've got folks like rhett to take care of that, but muse has got to be one of the worst bands i've ever heard.

muse is actually an excellent band.  Knights of Cydonia isnt my favourite track on my favourite album, but they are one of my favourite bands.

they have very large sounding rock. i think Queen would sound like this if they were still around and progressing with the times.

they put on a great show too!

but to rhett:  you wouldnt like any of their stuff.

It does seem to be a new trend...UK-NME-band opens for US-pop-punk-emo-band.  A few years ago Ash opened for Taking Back Sunday (I think?).  You just had Bloc Party with Panic at the Disco, and now this.  I can't wait until we see "Live at Verizon Center, Good Charlotte with special guests Babyshambles"

(I too have to admit that MCR is a step ahead of the rest of the pop-punk-emo crowd.)

Muse puts on one hell of a show.  I'm not the biggest fan of their latest album though.  and, I hate My Chemical Romance.  This is bad news.

I was at the Curiosa festival and heard the band from a distance, and thought they were alright but I wasn't into them at the time.  They were the last openening band before The Cure went on after.

I think a year later I heard the song Stockholm Syndrom and I was hooked.  Bought the album that has that tune, which is solidly good, and then started buying all their other stuff.

Origin of Symmetry is phenomenal.  Their first album is a bit of a dud (Showbiz).

Muse sold out the 75,000-seat Wembley Stadium in a couple hours. Good for them! I'll bet ten bucks that MCR is one of their openers.

I still think MCR are the bigger band here in the US though.

I really liked the first three albums, but I think Black Holes is a stinker. Absolution was great because it rocked, and Black Holes just seems too gimmicky.

Saying a band sold out 75,000 seats usually is a dead giveaway that the band either sucks, or is a bunch of over the hill geezers. Or both.
Title: Re: MUSE to open for My Chemical Romance

actually, saying a band sold out 75,000 seats is a dead giveaway that rhett will hate them with a passion before he's even heard a single note.  obstinance is to be expected.

too bad, they're a damn talented band...

See my post above. I've heard an entire song by this band.

I'm sure there are others that share my sentiment. The entertainment tastes of the general public suck.

muse = incredible.

 opening for MCR? strange.

i picture two completely different crowds heading out to those shows. i mean, i guess they might overlap a bit, but hardly. i saw MCR at voodoo fest and was entertained from a distance, but i'm definitely not a huge fan. my 16 year old sister, on the other hand, loves them.  she'll probably flip out at the thought of seeing muse & MCR together. i flip out at the thought of seeing muse live again, period. they're great. (but don't know if i'll pay heaps to see them play a short set in an arena...)

This blows in SOOOOO many different ways.  MCR should feel priviledged to set up Muse's instruments and stand silently on the side of the stage while they play.  This ranks up there with Sonic Youth "opening" for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Ash "opening" for Bravery... not to slag too much on the proverbial headliners but none of them can hold the jock of the "openers."

In defense of the bands, I suspect this had a lot more to do with record label A&R marketing than anything. To them, it's probably more like match up a band who does well with a certain demographic in the UK (or otherwise) with the same demographic in the US; hence we get big NME favorites being marketed to big HFS type favorites.

It all makes perfect sense on paper but doesn't really jive with the true music fans who listen beyond what the labels' numbers tell them.

To top it off, when the fans of the openers go, it's probably often accounted for being fans of the headliners; or, at best, fans of both bands. It's times like this when you really wish they were taking those polls at the door as to whom you are there to see.

It really cannot be said enough how screwed up this is.  Muse has headlined in the States already, and sold out most of their shows.  How in hell can anyone possibly justify having them open for anyone, let alone a shitty band like My Chemical Romance?  I've gone to shows specifically for openers before, perhaps never even having heard the headliner, but I've always stayed for the entire show.  In this case, however, I can easily see myself going for Muse and then getting the hell out of there.

Muse are positively brilliant, simply put.  Matt Bellamy is one of the most amazing guitarists in modern rock.  And they're ridiculous live.  Getting hit with "Stockholm Syndrome" at the end of their show was one of the most badass concert moments I've ever experienced (they usually end with that, I think).  And their headlining set at Glastonbury is one of the best concert recordings I've ever heard.  Their last album was slightly disappointing, but I still like it.  Origin of Symmetry and Absolution are both incredible albums, though, and to whoever called Showbiz a dud, I actually really like that one.

I will also have to admit, however, that My Chemical Romance are slightly better than the rest of the emo-punk crap out there.  I actually find their single listenable, which is more than I can say for most other bands like them.

How big were those sold-out shows?  They haven't been playing the big hockey arenas in the US like they're going to on this tour.  They're going to expose their music to tons of people who have never heard them before.  It's a great opportunity.   It's an odd pairing, but not that odd.   Good for them.

lets put it this way people, its just another weird ass Muse tour.

who did they tour with before?  i have seen them 3 times (aside from festivals) and they played with

the Zutons, Razorlight and the Stereophonics.

i really wouldnt care if they were opening for MCR.  i can and have sat through all kinds of crap bands in my life.  but i wont be paying $30-$50 whatever to see them open and play a 40minute set.  i am more mad about them opening than who they are opening for.

I read somewhere that MCR opened for Muse on their UK tour dates, and Muse might simply be returning the favor on the US dates. Makes sense, since both bands are bigger in their own countries.

Ok, I've been listening to it a lot, and I agree it's pretty damn good.  I'm glad I didn't let my initial "they sound like Radiohead" put me off.  They're a lot better than Radiohead.  In fact, I think a couple of times i've heard songs and thought "Radiohead is actually starting to get good!" and it's been Muse.

New to the board but I think that the new MCR cd is the best of the year.  Before the backlash, give the cd a listen, I think that you can go to their site for free.  I have seen a lot of poeple talk about bands and how much they suck since they are popular and therefore since MTV plays them, they are crap.  That is just ridiculous since everyone wants to be the pioneer and be the first to like a band and once five people listen to them, now they are crap again.  Well, give them a listen, it is just reassuring to hear bands come out with new songs that are not leftovers from a previous cd.
I am now going to step off the soapbox.

Now you should pick up Absolution, and when you get to a song called "Stockholm Syndrome", crank the volume up to full blast.   :)

Also, good to see you didn't fall into the "they're ripping off Radiohead because his voice sounds similar" trap.

Having spent last week in SoCal and listening to KROQ, the world makes a little more sense.  My Chemical Romance, or shall I say MyChem, are frickin huge out there.  The Black Parade is constantly played and finished #2 on their best of 2006 list (behind Dani California).  Its an interesting world out there - MyChem are incredible, Panic! at the Disco aren't a joke, Stadium Arcadium is a masterpiece, and 30 Seconds to Mars are fantastic.

Still a big fan of KROQ as they played Nirvana's Verse Chorus Verse from the No Alternative comp.

It also appears to be GA, so don't count on getting anywhere close (unless you want to line up real early).

I've never been to a GA show at a place like Merriweather, but it seems like a strange concept to me.  Is it like going to a sold out movie where people always leave the "courtesy seat" in between themselves and the next party?  Then if you want to get seats together you have to get the whole row to move down?  Or does everyone just stand up and they just jam as many in there as they can?

GA = pit ?

 The rest could be reserved.

GA Shows at merriweather are always different.

some, you buy Pit tickets, Seats, or lawn and you can go anywhere you want in those areas (no assigned seats)

however, for fall out boy last year, it was ALL GA and the first 500 people or whatever got Pit wristbands, the next few thousand got Pavilion and the rest had to sit in the lawn.

this seemed to be unannounced however, and it really made teens hearts beat faster, faster.

but they DO have to restrict how many people are in the Pit and Pavilion.

if all the tickets are the same price...i would plan on showing up way early to get a good wristband.
