Where do you get your music? Downloads, Amazon.com, used CD shops, ebay...where?
What percentage comes from which source?
-
50% - best buy, circuit city, etc.
40% - plan 9 (indie record store in richmond)
8% - used CD stores
2% - itunes
-
Tonevendor, baby! :D
But from many different sources including, all of the above.
-
40% - independent record stores (Revolution Records)
40% - Amazon.com
10% - friends (music I wouldn't purchase otherwise)
10% - Borders, Best Buy
-
70% - Sound Garden in Fells Point
20% - Best Buy, Borders
10% - Online (insound, CDwow, band's label)
-
90% used cd stores
5% Amazon
5% artist/label websites
-
100% soundgarden
i havent bought anything anywhere else in over 2 years.........maybe one or two cds at a show.
-
Best buy and that is about it.
Or I burn copies of my friends cds.
-
Oh, that's true. I probably get 5% at shows...
-
I-Tunes.....got into the habit while mixing spinning cd's. It's great that you can burn a single track from an album so you can make your own compelations.
-
80% <img src="http://www.amoebamusic.com/graphics/rrowworkleft2.gif" alt=" - " />
20% <img src="http://www.emusic.com/images/logoHeader.gif" alt=" - " />
-
Just crunched the numbers and arrived at the following
10% emusic
20% Best Buy...mainly for 9.99 new releases
30% Revolution Records
8% Direct from artist
7% At a show
25% Burns from friends

Couldn't agree more Mankie - try emusic!

I usually buy everything at Soundgarden in Fells Point.
If they don't have something, I order it from Insound. (this is rare)
-
I forgot about shows and direct from the artist. That's one of my favorite ways but not necessarily my highest percentage.
Promos too.
Can't break my percentages down at all because it varies so often.
-
I listen to XM to hear new stuff and I buy a lot of it on eBay. If you shop around a bit on eBay, you can get some great deals even when you factor in the shipping.
-
fifty fifty.
fifty in my head
fifty from the dead
-
I listen to XM
I've been a little dissapointed in XM since we got it although I think thats partially due to the fact that my schedule isn't that conducive to radio listening - I only drive on weekends and even then not much and when I get home during the week its eat / play with kid / get kid down to bed...once thats done I'd rather watch TV or tool around with itunes than listen to XM
-
i also steal music.
copywritten music. yup, i shake down almost any artist i can think of.
then i share it with other thieving friends of mine!!!
-
~50% used (vinyl & disc)
~25% Olssons
~15% Borders/B&N/other big stores
~10% misc. (shows, online)
-
I get most of my music from ebay (especially imports), followed by Tower or Amazon.
I've recently started to download music from eMusic, and use iTunes for the occasional random song here and there.
-
Melody when I'm in DC
Amoeba when I'm in SF
Insound when I'm in DC and Melody doesn't have it
Once in a while, I'll also buy CDs direct from Matador, Merge or SubPop
-
45% = Ebay
35% = Amazon.com marketplace sellers
15% = from online stores like Amazon & Overstock.com
04% = direct from label/artist, CD Baby, etc...
01% = quasi-legal file sharing
-
So no one shops at Crooked Beat?
I really like the place, although the inventory and new indie releases can be a bit sketchy, when compared to Melody for instance.
-
cmon guys, fess up!!! am I the only one who in addition to buying CDs gets burned copies from friends - overall about 75-25 buy burn ratio?
I find that hard to believe....

All right, I totally do that. A buddy of mine and I often decide beforehand who is going to buy something, and then we just burn it for the other. Particularly if it's a major label band. I realize it doesn't matter, but is the Cure really hurting for money? I need those re-issues!
I buy a lot through Amazon. The prices tend to be good, and I'll group them up to get the free shipping.
I download some, mostly through music blogs, so that I can hear the new bands. If I like something, I'll usually buy the disc. I'll use a fileshare program sometimes, usually after reading NME's singles of the week.
I sometimes get the 9.99 specials at Best Buy too. I'm not very good about patronizing the local stores. I used to spend $100+ a week at Vinyl Ink in Silver Spring because I worked around the corner.

Nope. All of my friends come to me for new music...

I'll give another nod to Crooked Beat. I've been trying to buy on CD what I had on tape as a teen (Husker Du, Black Flag, Pixies, etc).
If I had to guess at the percentages I'd go with:
40% Crooked Beat
30% Record and Tape Traders
20% CD-R's from friends
10% deepdiscountcd.com

I get maybe 5% that way. Often I end up buying the disc anyway if I see it used. I like having the whole package.
-
yeah, I like to coordinate purchases w/ friends as well!
All right, I totally do that. A buddy of mine and I often decide beforehand who is going to buy something, and then we just burn it for the other.

I did a couple years ago when I was just startung up my digital music library, but haven't much lately at all. Mostly because I see forum folks less than I used to, and among my other friends, I'm the one who buys the music primarily.
