What's the state-of-the-art (and affordable)? Anyone on this board tape shows and have advice?

But if you are doing it with mics, check some of the dead style forums, those guys really love their taping and have all the highest quality gear.

the best advice i can give you for asking this question is to have a dollar figure in mind that you are willing to spend when you ask the question. you can get answers that will lead you to gear costing <$100 to $10000+.

Depends... they often don't mic the amped instruments or the audience, so a soundboard isn't always a great mix

At a 930 level show, all amps are mic'ed. Audience usually comes through the vocal mics, or if they are using ears, they will often have audience mic's for the band, so you can mix those in.

your budget will tell you a lot of things. For a while I taped with ~$300 mics and a minidisc, but a few years ago i upgraded to dat (pcm-m1), and it's really nice. I bought most of my stuff from Sound Professionals and Masterpiece AV (though they've changed their name since I started working with them).

how can i get a board feed at 930? will a soundman really listen to the sound on my recorder and make it sound good?

no, usually board feeds are not mixed to a recorder, unless (like at the old Ranch Bowl in Omaha, they had a mixer especially for outs) so not only do you contend with it sounding like the room - which means it's not going to be pretty as you think - most bands do not allow taping whatsoever, and those that do usually don't allow sbds.

Sure, just clear it with Seth and the band before. If you hang around afterwards they'll usually help you with a little mastering as well!

i still rock a minidisks... so dont sleep on the batterys, extra tapes, and leave your talkive friend at home.
