Thank you for this. The new Mountain Goats album is on there and I love it. 2008 is starting off very well, musically.
-
Wasn't too crazy about that Mountain Goats. Maybe I need to give it another listen.
Could the new Circulatory System finally come out this year?

And I probably love it too much after one listen, but I thought it blew Get Lonely out of the water.

oh and the real hsm 3 album won't be.

The new Cornelius EP just leaked; first half is much better than the second as a whole but the Petra Haden cover of "Music" is beautiful.
-
Franz Ferdinand (didn't know one was coming, but i'm excited now)
Portishead (keeping expectations low... who knows what we'll get)
DCFC (there is a video on their website with a new track playing in the background - sounded good)
Postal Service
Coldplay (brian eno is producing it, and the band members have hinted that a lot of new technology went into the music... maybe this will be their Kid A album?)
-
They might as well make a Kid A.
They've been ripping off Radiohead for years now...why not continue?

After the second listen, I was loving that track. The addition of "The Stations" to their MySpace page is making me very excited about the new album.
The 2/14 show is sold out and the tickets for the 3/19 show went on sale a few days ago. Buy tickets now, scheme later. ;)

Bob Mould's new one has leaked. I've given 2-3 spins. I thought it was kind of generic at first, but it's got some of that Sugary power-popness so will keep at it. Some of the songs do sound kind of wimpy, but I think it will grow on me.

- eminem
- jack johnson
- gnarls
- paul weller
- keane
- arctic monkeys

Thurston Moore To Score Adult Film (http://blog.wired.com/music/2008/01/thurston-moore.html)
By Eliot Van Buskirk
January 18, 2008
Sonic Youth's lead axeman Thurston Moore recorded a soundtrack for a film called Extra Action (And Extra Hardcore), featuring "real women: unpretentious, unadorned, and definitely undressed."
We can probably expect something different from Thurston on this one; it's doubtful he'd employ the standard bow-chicka-wow approach. (Is that even a standard anymore, or merely a dying 70s trope? Nevermind).
"Those who love Kern's books know each is an invitation to join him as he follows them through their homes-or his New York apartment-from backyard to kitchen to bathroom to bedroom, capturing every sexy and embarrassing moment," according to the official description.
"Whenever Kern photographs one of these energetic, clothes-dropping exhibitionists, he brings out a video camera and asks them to 'roll around and do something interesting for a few minutes.' Extra Action [one hour long] documents 60 of these innocent amateur incidents set to an original musical score by Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth."
Extra Action (And Extra Hardcore) ships on March 18th for $20 (available on Family Video?).

The King of Sex
Pierce
Scooter and Jinx
Catholic

Goodbye 42nd Street

The new Hammock, "Maybe They Will Sing For Us Tomorrow".
Hammock has made a new record called "Maybe They Will Sing for Us Tomorrow". As some of you might remember, Hammock performed live for the first time ever in Hot Springs last summer for the US debut art exhibition of Riceboy Sleeps. ??Maybe They Will Sing for Us Tomorrow? is a studio recording of the sound installation that we wrote and performed for that event. Actually, ??studio performance? is a better way to put it (more on that below). The title of the record comes from a Riceboy Sleeps painting that we love. There??s still a lot of work going on behind the scenes, but we hope to have it out sometime in March.
We??re really happy to announce that the front and back cover artwork will be created by Riceboy Sleeps (Jonsi Birgisson, lead singer/guitarist of Sigur Ros and Alex Somers of Parachutes). The six-panel, cardstock CD package will also include contributions by Chuck Dodson (words) and Thomas Petillo (photographs of the band, a first for us).
Being so connected to this music means it??s difficult for us to describe it, but we feel like this might be our most personal and focused record to date. It??s definitely our most ??ambient? release so far??it contains no beats. The guitar parts for these eleven new pieces were recorded live in the studio with very little use of a click track. We recorded these songs exactly as we performed them, so hopefully there??s a spontaneity and vulnerability to the music that shines through. The string parts were added in later by our friend Matt Slocum. Working this way was a new experience for us, and we feel like this approach gives this record its own unique personality.
An even bigger challenge than making the recording itself was writing the music. All of these songs had to be written keeping in mind that we would be reproducing it onstage using nothing more than two guitars. The question was, ??Given the limitations, could we write music that was moving and interesting?? Those limitations were really self-imposed, and that??s the philosophy behind this record. Some of the visual artists that we admire the most will deliberately limit themselves to working within one particular medium, and we took a similar approach for this recording.
We hope you like the music, and as always, thank you for listening. We will be performing live in 2008, and there will be more news to come on that in the coming months. Hope to see some of you in person this year.
______________
I'm really hoping that they play around in Baltimore or DC. Love these guys!
For Hammock beginners, start with their debut CD called "Kenotic". Quite stunning!

For you Stephen Malkmus and Jicks fans, Matador has another one of their "Buy Early Get Now" promos going on for the new CD. I picked up at the New Pronographers show the Challengers: Executive Edition which was a set of CDRs on which to burn all the b-sides, live tracks, etc from the album. Including the iTMS exclusive tracks. Made available for download in both high quality MP3 and FLAC.
Wish more record companies where as forward thinking as Matador, I'd be willing to pay up front for extras vs having to pony up again later for some expanded edition.
A similiar offer is available for the SM&J CD..
- Stream of the entire album on the Buy Early Get Now site NOW
- 2 b-sides exclusive to this promotion NOW
- Full live show recorded on December 21, 2007 at Doug Fir in Portland
- All other b-sides and/or exclusive tracks related to this record (posted on the BEGN site 90 days after street date.)
- Poster for "Real Emotional Trash" (to be picked up or shipped on street date - Tues. March 4th. with the record.)

they highlighted a lot of decent bands, but most of them were already named in this thread so i didn't bother repeating them. they also listed other horrible wallace-approved acts that i skipped, like the all-american rejects and p!atd.
what i posted were the most interesting dregs (not necessarily artistically interesting). i wouldn't mind listening to #5 thru 11 of that list. the other half i could do without.
forgot to add the breeders, and just for you rhett: the new lenny kravitz album has dropped.
but the fact remains: spin does, for the most part, suck.

Someone sent me an actual promo copy recently. Don't bust your ass tracking it down. In my opinion, a couple good tracks but the others aren't doing much for me yet. It rocks more than what you might expect but there's still something just not up to par. I don't know, maybe you would think differently about it.
In other news, The Daysleepers are finally getting their full length out and from what I've heard from it, it's gorgeous. Same with the new Tearwave that will be out on Projeckt Records. Same producer, btw. Both should be stunning.
Oh, and Spc-Eco is putting something out but I think it may only be an EP. Some vinyl from them will be out on my friend's lable but I'm still hoping for much more down the line.

You'll have to take MTV's word on this one regarding the PATD fan's reaction to the name change, I already killed enough brain cells reading the reaction comments from your typically fan of a Road Runner Records band to that labels newest band De Novo Dahl.
"But then, last week, something rather extraordinary happened. Bravely ?? and rather inexplicably ?? Panic at the Disco decided to drop the "!" from their name, stemming the tide of exclamation overuse and royally ticking off their loyal (and seemingly nuts) fanbase in the process. The bandmembers tried to play it off by saying the point was "never part of the name to us," and that they axed it because it was "annoying to write." But the damage had already been done ... as several of their fans pointed out on sites like PATDOnline.com, the loss of the exclamation point seemed to indicate that Panic were doing everything in their power to put their past behind them (though we're not sure why they'd want to do that.)"

I've always found Boris to be so hit-or-miss. If it werent' for Pink, I'd probably have written them off. They're one of those bands that I'm having to constantly adjust the volume because they'll have three minutes of static or hushed ambient noodling and then they'll redline with the noise.
Genghis Tron and Meshuggah are also 'out there' and they're pretty good.

I watched DIG last night on my pc through Netflix.
It was funny how their modestly attractive lead singer seemed to view himself as much more physically attractive than he actually is.

The all-over-the-placeness of their albums is one thing I always liked about them. This one is like that probably more than any other. There's a track on here that sounds like they gave it to Merzbow to play with after they recorded it followed by an almost completely acoustic ballad. :)
New Genghis Tron leaked last night, by the way. Still yet to hear it.

Can't say I am looking forward to it, but apparently Scarlett Johansson is releasing an album of Tom Waits covers.
February 12, 2008, 6:30 PM ET
Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
Scarlett Johansson unveiled her debut album, "Anywhere I Lay My Head," for journalists today (Feb. 12) at New York's Joe's Pub. As previously reported, the album includes 10 Tom Waits covers and one original ("Song for Jo"), and will be released May 20 via Atco/Rhino.
"Anywhere" was produced by TV On The Radio's Dave Sitek, who told the crowd he was going for a "cough medicine/Tinker Bell" vibe, sound-wise. David Bowie, whom Johansson met a party just prior to beginning work on the album, lends his distinctive vocals to the tracks "Falling Down" and "Fannin' Street," while Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner and members of the band Celebration contribute throughout.
Johansson said she initially considered making an album of standards, but that the project slowly morphed into a Waits-dominated affair. "His melodies are so beautiful and his voice is so distinct," she said.
The result, according to Johansson, has met with the notoriously persnickety Waits' approval. "I sent him some of the early, early recordings, and he said, 'Go ahead,'" she said. "I've heard he's very pleased."
While the majority of the album lives up to Sitek's prior description, there are some up-tempo departures, particularly on "I Don't Want To Grow Up," which boasts drum machine beats straight out of a New Order song.
There are no plans for Johansson to perform live in support of the project, but she says she'd be intrigued by "getting everybody together," perhaps at a festival, at some point in the future. "It would be a missed opportunity not to."
Here is the track list for "Anywhere I Lay My Head":
"Fawn"
"Town With No Cheer"
"Falling Down"
"Anywhere I Lay My Head"
"Fannin' Street"
"Song for Jo"
"Green Grass"
"I Wish I Was in New Orleans"
"I Don't Want To Grow Up"
"No One Knows I'm Gone"
"Who Are You?"

new Islands record the day before my birfday.
that was mighty kind of them.

Not exactly an album but this new Sir Richard Bishop dvd sounds like a barrel of family-friendly fun.
??For centuries, man has used organized religion to control the hearts and minds (not to mention the pocketbooks) of the ignorant masses. Well, Richard Bishop
has decided he would like a piece of the action.
This film is a diabolical experiment in hypnotic mind control??a phantasmagoric presentation of demonic and divine imagery, meticulously assembled and designed
to put the viewer into an altered state of darkened awareness. Includes original music from Elektronika Demonika, as well as unreleased material.
If you ever wanted to go to hell and back, this film will get you halfway there. Some viewers may find the imagery used in this film to be disturbing, but
that??s the idea. Contains some strong sexual content (as all true religion should). Not for the weak-minded, faint of heart, or those suffering from occasional
seizures.?
A DC public screening would be stellar.

Because everyone assumes it will show up at about the same time as Chinese Democracy and Godot.

The Telescopes just told me today that they have a new album coming out in June. Can't wait!
A friend of mine has an advance of the new Black Angels and says it's really good. Can't wait to hear it myself.
-
So is it kosher to add your opinions/perspectives on some of these leaks of new albums? C'mon people, let's close some loops here. What are your opinions of some of these new records.
Gutter Twins -- Just cannot get into this. Have given it 5-6 exclusive listens, and nothing has taken hold. It's drifting into the nether.
Breeders -- Same thing. I really tried but other than a couple crackling pop tunes, it's far too slow and atmospheric. What happened, Breeders?
Times New Viking -- I really dig this. Comes out punching, and never lets up. Lots of hooks, lots of fuzz, weird, off-angle, awesome.
Supergrass -- I like this okay, though a month from now I'll probably never listen to it again. It's kind of generic up-tempo Britpop, but that's sure as shit better than low-tempo Breeders.
Grand Archives -- Like this a lot. It's smooth as silk, with harmonies, and that usually = death for me. But the songs are great, the production is stellar, and I'm really digging it. Well met!
MGMT -- Probably my favorite thing of the last few weeks. Super-catchy synth-based psychedelic pop. Good sporto disc too, as it's almost all up-tempo.

Listening to the first single from the new M83. I'm a little surprised. It's a house track with some Ulrich Schnauss-ish melodies on top. Thought he'd pick up where Before the Dawn Heals Us left off but this is a completely different direction.
It's like...club banger meets shoegaze.
Also heard the first three tracks of the new Black Keys and am liking it so far.

I think it's just okay after the first 2-3 listens. They have gotten much more "tuneful" - not that there's anything wrong with that. But now I'm listening to The Big Come Up -- much much more to my liking.
The new Dead Meadow is very good. A definite departure from the all-out Sabbath-y stoner rock of their previous albums. It's got some great tunes, but I think I still prefer the older stuff - particularly Feathers.
Times New Viking is great. Fast, loud, and dirty - the same way I like my women.
Glasvegas is great also. To steal a line from the BBC - "like the Jesus and Mary Chain playing the Grease soundtrack."
The new Dirtbombs is okay. Not up there with Ultraglide in Black. But I have always thought the Dirtbombs are better appreciated live anyway.
-
Tilly and the Wall
New album this summer. They're playing a ton of the new stuff live (just saw the first show of the tour last night), and it all sounds great. All you folks back east should hit up the RnR Hotel on March 18. :)
-
Hard Candy- Apr 29!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
had a listen to the new Earth album today - good stuff if you're into stoner drone, psychedelic grunge, apocalyptic post-rock, or whatever the label of the month is. i suspect that it'll be a hit with snailhook and azaghal, relaxer you might like it too. heavy, chugging stuff. are supposed to announce a north american tour someday soon.
and thanks for the MGMT recommendation - had it on today while working, didn't give it my full attention but was definitely enjoyable. looking forward to giving it a proper spin.
-
That Earth album definitely did not disappoint.
And Bill Frisell fit surprisingly very well on it.
Fleet Foxes full-length leaked.
-
anybody listen the new NIN album yet?
first nine tracks are free (http://ghosts.nin.com/main/order_options), i'm DL'ing them right now.
Nine Inch Nails presents Ghosts I - IV, a brand new 36 track instrumental collection available right now. Almost two hours of new music composed and recorded over an intense ten week period last fall, Ghosts I - IV sprawls Nine Inch Nails across a variety of new terrain.
Trent Reznor explains, "I've been considering and wanting to make this kind of record for years, but by its very nature it wouldn't have made sense until this point. This collection of music is the result of working from a very visual perspective - dressing imagined locations and scenarios with sound and texture; a soundtrack for daydreams. I'm very pleased with the result and the ability to present it directly to you without interference. I hope you enjoy the first four volumes of Ghosts."
(...)
Ghosts I-IV is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike license.
An exciting partnership and experience regarding this release will be announced soon.
-
I thought all 36 were free?
Still yet to listen, though.
-
yes, all 36 can be free depending where you get them - tsk tsk :p
-
Yep. Saw them in San Francisco last Sunday. New songs sounded great. They're a great live band!

The mash-up of the new Moby LP is pretty friggin' great. Chic meets Donna Summer meets New Order meets Daft Punk...with old Moby (circa 1994, back when he was still great) thrown in. And before you trash Moby, stuff like "Move" and "Everything Is Wrong" is still killer. He's still got good music left in him.
-
No I didn't mean that at all.
I thought they were all available free officially but could be wrong.

yes it has. from da wiki (http://tinyurl.com/2wpl38):
The album leaked on P2P networks on March, 7, 2008, however, in poor quality and with tracks fading out in a way not intended.
i've found a torrent for a 61.1 MB file, and i'm (supposedly) currently connected to 3 hosts - but i'm not receiving anything. anyone else experience this? it's the second time this has happened to me. the conspiracy theorist in my is thinking that the RIAA is mucking up the p2p networks on purpose. dang, i hate waiting for official release dates when i know it's out there.
-
Yeah I got that 61 mB file curtesy of another boardy but haven't given it a listen yet.
Maybe I should hold off if it's lower quality (and that would explain why it's not on the private torrent sites).
In other news, new Jamie Lidell is around.
-
Wow this is even better than Multiply.
-
re: the Portishead leak.
Two of the songs have abrupt cutoffs at the end of tracks instead of fadeouts, but it's better then nothing. The record is really, really, really, really good.

My impressions of a couple new releases:
Sun Kil Moon "April" -- Have tried to get into this guy's stuff, whether SKM or Red House Painters and have always been put to sleep. But this is hitting very well, mostly because of the first song. Liking this a lot.
Black Keys "Attack & Release" -- Good, and getting better. Some of the songs feel like classics after only 2-3 spins. Probably won't stick around the rotation for very long, but it'll get a few weeks.
Howling Rain "Magnificant Friend" -- Good, but I struggle to listen to this and not lament the hiatus/split of Comets on Fire. First HR album was really mellow but this has more rawk elements.
Panic at t!he Disco -- Tried to give this an objective listen, and I've had chemical romances with cheese bands in the past. But this just isn't very good. Sounds too much like they did the Alicia Keys routine of listening to a lot of classic albums and then writing songs that sound just like them. But even the Beatles didn't go straight from Please Please Me to Sgt Peppers.
Dodos "Visitor" -- This is okay, kind of neat, but sounds too much like boring bands like Shins, Modest Mouse, Spoon etc.
These New Puritans "Beat Pyramid" -- Other than SKM, probably my favorite of the new batch. Sounds kind of a combo of Art Brut and Bloc Party. Jagged, sorta-electronic pop with very British declaration-style vocals.
-
Death Cab for Cutie's new one is twixt the waves, if you're into that crapass band.
-
Just put on Benga - Diary of an Afro Warrior.
Been meaning to get to this for a while.
-
This is nowhere near as dark and plotting as most dubstep I've heard. It's way more upbeat. Also has a slightly funky downtempo tinge. I like so far.
-
Tobacco "Fucked Up Friends"
Boris "Smile"
-
Cloudland Canyon - Lie in Light just leaked.
And it's krautrock-tastic!
-
Hey Snailhook...
Brethren of the Free Spirit (James Blackshaw & Jozef Van Wissem) - All Things are from Him, through Him and in Him
Holy shit that pairing sounds promising. Putting it on next. I'm excited.
-
Billy Howerdel of A Perfect Circle has a solo project with an album coming out next week, Keep Telling Myself It's Alright. The album leaked today - like Portishead you might not find it on private sites cuz it's only 160kbps. It's pretty good but no Thirteenth Step. The best song is probably the single, The Stone, which despite being in the Top 10 rock radio tracks I have never heard on DC101.
-
New Booka Shade is nice.

So has this thread become my new blog or something?
About to give this a listen:
Limited factory-pressed ??real?? CD album from Tara Burke aka Fursaxa, packaged in marbled, psychedelic card slipcases and wraparound inner sleeves and released
on her own label. Recorded in Pennsylvania and Florida and mastered by Norm Fetter and Michael Gibbons of Bardo Pond. The whole disc has a heavy Judee
Sill feel that hasn??t really been so apparent in her back catalogue until now but the combination of bells, hypnagogic choral settings and distant, sunbleached
fidelity immediately conjures a similar dark, devotional air to Sill??s masterful ??The Donor?. As usual with Fursaxa there is a heavy, ritualistic feel
to much of the material, but some of it is so dilated and weirdly-arranged - with hypnotic, F/X mutated spoken word and huge sighs of almost Penderecki/Crumb-esque
vocal smears - that it touches on the outer-space hysteria of Euro-heads like Zweistein or Catherine Ribeiro and Alpes more than any contemporary US ??drone??,
albeit refracted through early music and madrigal stylings. It all ends with one of the most spell-binding movements in her entire catalogue, with a chaos
of vocal hiss functioning as a long, slow pan through the kind of fog-bound territory previously mapped by Andrew Chalk and Christoph Heemann as Mirror.
One of her darkest and most otherworldly set of space-whispers to date. Highly recommended.
-
Parts & Labor's Mapmaker is pretty awesome, has this epic noisy anthem element to it.
-
Skimmed that a while ago. Guess I need to go back and give it more attention.
This Fursaxa is just as spooky and medieval-sounding as the rest of her stuff.
-
Ladytron and My Brightest Diamond, though the latter already leaked.

Nadja - Desire and Uneasiness leaked last night too.

So did I. Several times. No uneasiness to report.

Ladytron's 'Witching Hour' totally took me by surprise when it came out, so I've been really looking forward to the new one.
Well, 'Velocifero' has leaked, and it's... okay. What I loved about WH was how instantly it grabbed ahold with surprisingly rocking hooks, and this new one seems to harken back to their first couple albums of more mid-tempo, electronic songs. Still need to listen to it more, but it seems like WH might have been the anomaly.
-
So the Islands leak coincides with the DC show onsale date. :)
-
New Circulatory System tracks on their myspace.
Too bad there's something wrong with my flash player and I can't hear them. :(

I liked Alien Native a lot; this should be a good listen too:
Factums - "Lost One" (Spells and Charms)
Seattle??s Factums have been knocking around for a few years now, with a scattered trail of releases left along the way that document the trio??s feet-first
plunge into the darkest recesses of modern noise, post-Kraut synths, and a distinctly intergenerational punk squall. While the group??s members list both
the Fruit Bats and the Intelligence as former stomping grounds, in sound and style they really only compare to the latter, and even then with a grimmer
mindset and spare approach that makes the Intelligence??s few records seem like breezy walks in a pretty overpopulated park.
One of Factum??s greatest assets is their ability to sound so singularly out of time in nearly everything they do. Easily at home alongside modern weirdo
punks like the A Frames (with whom they have collaborated) or pretty much any other member of the S-S Records stable, the group??s singles and lone Siltbreeze
LP, Alien Native, betrayed a crew that would have been as much at home warming up for early incarnations of Pere Ubu, Chrome or Cabaret Voltaire as they
are churning out product from their modern Pacific Northwest perch. None of that is to suggest that these three sound particularly derivative of any bygone
generation of avant punk loners. Quite the contrary, actually, as their limber jams pull those classic sounds into these modern times with an unkempt urgency.
Though removed a few years from the recordings that made up the Alien Native LP, most of the tracks on Spells and Charms tap right into the same rusty vein,
all distant echoes and thumps, trebly guitars and distant shouts that witness an almost industrial clatter propelled forth with garage punk??s limber pulse
and rhythmic insistence. Recorded live and with zero frills, the music here is presented with a fidelity that grants it a mysterious urgency, with tracks
bounding back and forth between moodier, instrumental set-pieces and full-bodied stomps that kick at a frenetic pace.
??Lost One? sets the pace for the album early on, opening with a simple bassline that backs up into a rumbling percussive shuffle, both of which serve as
a necessary counterpoint to a drone of guitars and distorted vocals. It??s a simple formula, though one that plays with minimalist approaches from a number
of different genres, rubbing dub??s spartan deployment against more experimental drone textures. Later, the band works their way through the queasy, circular
??Mixture,? and howls through ??Origami,? plying simple percussive figures with a steadily encroaching din.
While each of the actual songs on Spells and Charms is pretty great on its own, some of the band??s most creative work here comes in the (sometimes) brief
interstitial pieces that pop up throughout the album. Ranging from keyboard driven pulse of ??Anemone? to the quasi-Dead C. homage of ??Anopheles,? these
shorter bursts neatly summarize Factums other driving infinitive, one that seeks to transcend the rudimentary nature of garage punk with more exploratory
glances at busted electronics. When examined alongside the more rhythmic, claustrophobic clatter that these three cook up throughout much of the album,
these brief asides easily help elevate Spells and Charms and into wholly bizarre territory, a place that??s well worth coming back to again and again.

That 77 minutes of bonus material sounds inessential. Alternate mixes are usually indistinguishable from the originals. And "tracking highlights" is code for "musical bloopers." "Forever Changes" is my favorite album of all time but I'm not buying this crap. Until someone digs up some live tracks from the Da Capo era, my money's staying in my wallet.
-
So the American version of Boris' Smile pales in comparison to the Japanese one. The Japanese mix has this nice thick coating of fuzzy dirt on it that the US one completely lacks and replaces it with some rearrangements of a couple tracks that actually make them worse, placing a few formulaic guitar solos in them. "Statement," for example, is a piece of shit when compared to its Japanese counterpart "Message." The Japanese version is also more cohesive and has a nice flow whereas the US one has songs that begin and end very abruptly. The American version is also roughly 20 minutes shorter; the Japanese copy contains one more song ("You Put Up Your Umbrella") and has a longer "bonus track." It's the same "Bonus Track" on both but the American one is edited down by around 4 minutes. Edit: "Message" is a good 4-5 minutes longer than "Statement." And this may be a petty complaint but whose bright idea was it to rename "Next Saturn" to "My Neighbor Satan?" I'm typically a huge fan of Southern Lord but they really dropped the ball here. Who knows where I could score a Japanese copy without paying through the nose?

New album by The Fall - Imperial Wax Solvent
I'm really digging it.
Good to see MES is still alive and 'chopping up rare red squirrels with hedge-clipper' (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=558348&in_page_id=1770)
I can't believe the RSPCA is both this gullible and has nothing better to do.

Apparently "You Put Up Your Umbrella" is on the American version of Boris' Smile; just wasn't on the promo copy.

Thanks for the heads-up on the Fall album!

Anyone have an opinion on the upcoming Weezer?

I spun the blue album and Pinkerton a LOT back in the day, but didn't listen much to the following 3 albums. But this new one is going to be pretty awesome. Troublemaker is a great song, as is The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived.

Snailhook and Julian are probably the only two others who'd care about this but:
"Brand new album from Raccoo-oo-oon! RTB will do the CD and Not Not Fun will do a 2xLP of it. The recording is already done and is absolutely fantastic!
76 minutes... 76 minutes! More all over the place, more all over everything. Spaced out prog-madness, just beyond everything. Be prepared. Just waiting

Sonic Youth Sets Track List for Starbucks Comp (http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003806843)
May 21, 2008, 4:40 PM ET
Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
Sonic Youth has finalized the track list for its compilation "Hits Are for Squares," due June 10 exclusively in Starbucks stores in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., as well as online.
In addition to the exclusive Sonic Youth track "Slow Revolution," the limited-edition CD features Sonic Youth songs, handpicked by Radiohead, Chloe Sevigny, Dave Eggers, Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, Beck, Flea, David Cross and other enthusiasts. Participants have also written about their selections for the liner notes.
"I guess, for some, Sonic Youth represents something that they don't really equate with Starbucks," Moore told Billboard last year. "But I kind of like the absurdity of it. Sonic Youth has always, in a way, made itself available to the super mainstream."
"In a way, Sonic Youth has a branded name," he continued. "People know the name, but not necessarily our music, which might be a little too outsider for some. And when they do hear a little something, it doesn't tell the whole story. I thought it would be interesting to have a CD available in a store like Starbucks where the casual consumer can sort of have access to [our music] more readily."
"From my experience nothing gets you going like putting on 'Teenage Riot' at full volume ... 0 to 60, standing still," Vedder writes of his choice. "Play it twice and you will have cleaned the house and shoveled the walk. In a car you'll find yourself doing 95 and getting pulled over before the first chorus."
Sonic Youth has a few shows lined up this summer, including a July 4 gig with the reunited Feelies at New York's Battery Park.
Here is the track list for "Hits Are for Squares:"
"Bull in the Heather," selected by Catherine Keener
"Sugar Kane," selected by Beck
"100%," selected by Mike D
"Kool Thing," selected by Radiohead
"Disappearer," selected by Portia De Rossi
"Superstar," selected by Diablo Cody
"Stones," selected by Allison Anders
"Tuff Gnarl," selected by Dave Eggers and Mike Watt
"Teenage Riot," selected by Eddie Vedder
"Shadow of a Doubt," selected by Michelle Williams
"Rain on Tin," selected by Flea
"Tom Violence," selected by Gus Van Zant
"Mary-Christ," selected by David Cross
"World Looks Red," selected by Chloe Sevigny
"Expressway to Yr Skull," selected by Flaming Lips
"Slow Revolution," exclusive new Sonic Youth recording

If you're into Fela Kuti or Afro beat.
Seun Kuti's first album, Seun Kuti + Fela's Egypt80 is really worth checking out.
He's keeping the Kuti legend going strong. I'm digging it more than anything Femi has done so far.
Can't wait for the July 7th show at 9:30.

Did they add the "selected by" part so that it will sell more?

I wonder if he does Fela songs live.

This should be good:
Helena Espvall & Masaki Batoh duo album out on Drag City july 22nd!
Helena Espvall and Masaki Batoh are known to open-eared music listeners for their collaborations with other artists ?? artists with names such as Ghost,
Espers, Damon & Naomi, Fursaxa, Tom Rapp, Lukas Ligeti, Bert Jansch, among many others. By collaborating with each other, they've made one of the most
beautiful recordings either one of them has yet participated in.
They first met at a festival in the United States in 2006. Batoh presented Helena with a handmade bamboo instrument; short on spare celli, she gave him
a copy of her solo CD. Afterwards, they stayed in touch. At some point Helena suggested an improvised musical collaboration. Batoh wrote back and said:
"Actually I'm too busy now to think about music...if my idols Moondog, Henry Cowell or Toru Takemitsu wanted me, I'll refuse their orders."
Several weeks later he had a change of heart. He contacted Helena and said that he felt they should record not improvisations only, but songs as well. Helena
made a demo of some Scandinavian folk songs that she remembered in her spirit from growing up in northern Sweden, thinking that maybe they'd record one.
The recording session was held in Tokyo over four days in December 2007. For instruments fans, this session might be a treasure. So many strings were used:
6- and 12-string guitar, banjo, cello, hurdy-gurdy, harp, contra bass, chappa Tibetan bells, Kin (Buddist metallic bowl), timpani, bass marimba, vibraphone,
thunder sheet and on and on.
Six of the traditional Swedish traditional tunes were reconstructed, along with Batoh's arrangement of "Death Letter," a classic Son House delta blues song.
Additionally, a European medieval tune was addressed in their own arrangement and expressions. "Zeranium," a dreamy folk tune that Batoh wrote for Damon
& Naomi (they didn't use it), was re-arranged for this session as well.

I'll keep a lookout.
For the dubstep/minimal tech fans:
2562 - Aerial is a great hybrid of the two genres so far.
Review from indietorrents:
Over a succession of rhythm melting vinyl releases for Tectonic, SubSolo and Philpot, Dave Huismans has asserted himself as the leading practitioner of
forward thinking dancefloor motions currently in operation. Under the' Dogdaze, A Made Up Sound and his revered 2562 moniker Huismans has shocked the now
merged techno and dubstep fraternities with a brilliantly consistent stream of bare bones riddims encompassing brittle 2-step, lurching techno and bass
driven dub with a fractured brokenbeat aesthetic that sounds quite unlike anything else being produced today. Aerial is Huismans' massively anticipated
debut album and contains some of the most deadly material produced under his 2562 guise, formed into a coherent statement of ten tracks set to detonate
headphoness and Soundsystems around the world this summer. This CD edition pulls together four tracks previously dispatched over the course of three individual
12"s released in the last year, plus six sparkling fresh productions primed to dub the world into submission. The set skanks into view with 'Redux' plumbing
the depths of a breezing downtempo dub cut in the finest Rhythm & Sound styles, and clearing the airspace for the snaking syncopations of 'Morvern'. From
here there's a run of tracks culled from recent releases, ready to educate unblessed ears with some bass stepping sanctification, but the real treats for
those who've been paying close attention come in the form of the stunning 'Basin dub' composed from delicate blue chords and a double-timed rhythmic intuition
that couldn't have come from anyone else, followed by the equally crushing 'Greyscale', realisng many a technoXdubstep nerd's wet dream with a sacred stylistic
blend of Burial, Basic Channel and T++ that leaves us floored. Finally another new effort 'The times' signs off the album with some moody and expansive
dub chords whipped into spectral plumes over a coma-slow riddim that brings us full circle and ready for repeat. This album follows in the massively revered
tradition of dub experimentation and rhythm science laid down in the lineage stretching from Lee Perry through King Tubby, Scientist, Steve Gurley, Dillinja,
Photek, Rhythm & Sound, Kode 9 and Burial, so all we can say is that if any of those names have remotely affected you in any way you really need to check
this album out. Without doubt one of the albums of the year - absolutely mighty.

I'm listening to the Fratellis album as I write. It's exactly what you would expect from the band that did Costello Music. They certainly didn't get all Kid A on us. But you know what, it's a fun album and will be played a lot in the car this summer.

New Of Montreal in October.
Hopefully this blog post means a return to form. The last three albums were good but Of Montreal are at their best when they're at their most absurd (Coquelicot, Gay Parade).
i've finished the new album. i've been working on it for over a year. it's mastered and ready to go.
it won't come out till october though. i am very happy with it. i worry that some people are going to misunderstand it. there's nothing i can do about that
though, now, it is done. anyways,i didn't create it to give people something to like. i created it because i was compelled to.
it is possible to view this album as one long composition, with lots of different movements, or just as a collection of pop songs. i wanted to make an album
that was unpredictable and, at times, startling, yet always hummable and catchy. some of the transitions are intentionally awkward. i did this to keep the
listener off guard and to dismantle people's perception of how an album is supposed to be constructed. i am so bored with art that makes sense and "works".
i wanted to do somethings that didn't "work". very few things pique our interest while they are working as we expect them to, things are far more interesting
when they are not working. shocking people though, just for the sake of it, is so mundane. nothing on Skeletal Lamping was intended to shock. i just feel
that,in most contemporary songs, you can basically finish the artist's sentences, musically and lyrically. i wanted to make an album where that was not
possible.
i wanted to make a record that could truly surprise a listener. to create something that was, in turns, enraging,joyous,discomforting,playful,lovely,unpleasant,freaky,mesmeric...something
that came close to capturing the labyrinthine complexity of this human consciousness.
i spend most of my time in a state of mild confusion and pensiveness. i imagine most people do too. this record is my attempt to bring all of my puzzling,contradicting,disturbing,humorous...fantasies,ruminations
and observations to the surface, so that i can better dissect and understand their reason for being in my head. hence the title, Skeletal Lamping. Lamping
is the name of a rather dreadful hunting technique where, hunters go into the forest at night,
flood an area in light, then shoot,or capture, the animals as they panic and run from their hiding places.
this album is my attempt at doing this to my proverbial skeletons. i haven't yet decided if i should shoot or just capture them though.

08 seems to have a lot of back in fine forms.
The new Tricky mucho better than the last three, leaving LA was a wise choice.
New Martina Topley-Bird is really good too.

So this looks like it should be amazing:
Nels Cline/Carlos Giffoni/Alan Licht/Lee Ranaldo
'Nothing Makes Any Sense' CD
A constantly shifting and engaging long-form piece of developed drone, foreboding melody, and harsh grit, Nothing Makes Any Sense finds Lee Ranaldo (Sonic
Youth), Nels Cline (Nels Cline Singers, Wilco), and Alan Licht pushing their guitars into a cacophonous state that bears much influence from the post-jazz
fields they've all cut their teeth in, but also bearing down a forceful brutality that has sometimes eluded their past material. While Carlos Giffoni uses
his analog Synth mastery to adequately contend and mesh seamlessly with the trio of strings, letting his analog noise pulsate and pierce with its own sense
of contained stampede.

How has there been no mention of this new Thurston Moore album on No Fun?
-
Whoa!
Kikuri (Keiji Haino + Masami Akita) - Pulverized Purple
"Debut release from this monstrous new Japanese underground supergroup that pairs arguably the two most influential and radical modern Japanese musicians
for the first time, Keiji Haino and Masami Akita aka Merzbow. Recorded live at the Victoriaville Festival in 2007, Haino pretty much dominates the proceedings,
which isn??t to say that Akita is reduced to any kind of background contribution but rather that Haino - in the way he does with other heavyweight collaborators
like Tony Conrad et al - immediately establishes the grounds of the exchange. It??s a good move, especially when he??s dealing with the kind of overwhelming
firepower and monomania of Akita. When the first track starts out it sounds like classic Merzbow for the first minute or so but then Haino usurps the arc
of the track with some unlikely wordless vocals, forcing Akita into backing down to a cracked Industrial drone while Haino builds loop after loop of forlorn
song. In fact, the first track is most directly comparable to the psychedelic choral song of Haino??s Nijiumu project. After that there??s a bunch of tracks
that see Haino using percussive, acoustic instruments and combining lung-destroying vocals with Akita??s streamrolling analog assault. But it??s the final
track that??s the real monster, a 30 minute guitar/electronics/drums jams with Haino playing classic iconoclastic single note lead bombs ala the first track
on Pathetique while Akita destroys a drumkit behind him. A fantastic set that goes well beyond what you might expect from this particular duo. Also features
a picture of Haino wearing baggy trousers and big clumpy boots - what the fuck? Highly recommended.
Recorded on May 21, 2007 at the 24th International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville festival. Mixed and mastered at Peace Music Studio."

Not at all liking the new Fratellis album... The slap dash lets get drunk and do drugs feel of the first is gone and now replaced by them trying to sound like any other band but the Fratellis. So its a mix of Piano Ballads, 70s Power Ballads, a song that sounds like Little Man Tate. I'm sure The Darkness is in there somewhere.
I've heard bands ape others to good effect, but not on this record.

"We??re very happy to announce Brightblack Morning Light??s new album and second for Matador, Motion To Rejoin. Release is scheduled for September 23 in most of the world, and November 10 in the UK and Europe

Was panning the new Primal Scream leak, but I've deduced that this is just a loopty-loop red herring and not the finished product. So... criticism FAIL
-
Look at what I just found!
"On two magical nights-- June 22, 2005 and September 12, 2006-- punk godmother Patti Smith and My Bloody Valentine genius Kevin Shields took the stage together at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall. Their collaboration was called the Coral Sea, and took both its name and inspiration from Smith's 1996 book The Coral Sea. The book and the performance served as tributes to the legendary late artist Robert Mapplethorpe, who was Smith's close friend. (He took the iconic photograph that appears on the cover of Smith's 1975 debut album Horses.)
Fortunately for those of us who couldn't make those shows, Smith and Shields have put together a double-disc set chronicling the two performances. The Coral Sea will be released on July 11 on PASK, a new imprint run by Smith and Shields."

the Lovely Sparrows have put out an album yesterday. sure maybe another indie pop band from Austin but i think they're worth checking otu.
"Bury the Cynics" is the title.

Rodriguez - Cold Fact
Read a review about this forthcoming re-issue on Paste and was already intrigued about it. The fact that it's being put out by Light In The Attic, who are quickly becoming one the best US labels for re-issues, is a plus. Features guitar work by legendary Funk Brother Dennis Coffey.
But based on the preview MP3 over I'm REALLY looking forward to this one. He's like Donovan with a hint of Nick Drake, Jose Feliciano, Richie Havens all rolled into one. Paste also mention Marvin Gaye, Arthur Lee and of course Dylan.

And in other E6 news, this just leaked:
The Music Tapes - For Clouds And Tornadoes
"This album spotlights Julian Koster's (Neutral Milk Hotel, Chocolate USA) songcraft and distinctive vocals, his almost religious devotion to the singing saw, and numerous contributions from other musicians in the Elephant 6 orbit. As on previous efforts, recording was done using an array of antique hardware, giving the record a timeless, texturally rich sonic palette."

So this kind of sucks. A lot.

New Grails sounds promising:
"With Faust conspirator Steven Wray Lobdell and Earth/Sunn O))) producer Randall Dunn as engineers ?? not to mention drummer Emil Amos having recently become the new other half of Om ?? Grails?? avant-metal leanings are evident as always. But Doomsdayer??s Holiday finds their already-broad palette continually expanding with 70s European film noir and cosmic free jazz explorations to compliment the Middle Eastern psychedelic folk-metal the group is already known for. Inviting the legendary Alan Bishop of Sun City Girls to add vocals to the mix for the ominous ??Predestination Blues? only adds to its unusual beauty."
