If Coachella is poasted, SXSW talk should begin too...Keynote speaker: Pete Townshend.
Rickie Lee Jones will speak. No artists announced as of yet, or have they? (Pollstar reflects the Moaners on 15th and 16th)
I'm probably not attending this year, unless it's decided at the last minute. Will possibly visit in '08 (hotels went even more quickly this year!).

Here's a good resource for sxsw confirmations:

-
Stooges are supposedly playing SXSW.
-
Hey, LT, if you decide to go, email me. I might have a lead on accommodations for you.
Since one just cannot have bad time at SXSW, I'd recommend booking a hotel (outlying hotels still have rooms) prior to band confirmation. If SXSW housing bureau shows no availability, you might want to call the hotel directly. Also, Craigslist for Austin has some good apartment/house deals for that week.
Thanks to board suggestion from last year, www.donewaiting.com (http://www.donewaiting.com) turned out to have the best info on unofficial day-showcases, and parties. With an estimate of over 1,000 bands in six days last year, even jaded boardies might find a band or two to enjoy.

I've got my flight and hotel booked. I registered back in September and got a room at the Omni, one of the hotels within a couple blocks of Sixth Street (at this point, hotels for registrants are sold out to the extent that the only availability is 5 miles from the Convention Center -- but, call hotels directly or check Craigslist). Oooh yes. And this year it looks like the three days I'm there will have to make up for a lot of shows missed during the rest of the year...
According to the latest monthly newsletter, the following bands are scheduled to appear (though it's the bands I haven't heard of yet that I'm most excited to see):
The Stooges
Interpol
Bloc Party
Lily Allen
Matt & Kim
the Watson Twins
Cold War Kids
Devin the Dude
Hoodoo Gurus
Ghostland
Observatory
Stax
50th Anniversary Soul Review
Ozomatli
Turbonegro

Rumor list from Austinist (http://www.austinist.com/archives/2007/01/10/sxsw_rumor_mill_sxsw_hides_160_band_list_but_were_here_to_help.php)

I'm going. My former show buddy moved to Austin and bought a house, so there's my housing right there.
I'm probably most excited about seeing the Stooges, but when Turbonegro takes the stage, I'll be front and center.

Downtown hotels are completely sold out. I, however, have three rooms reserved at the Courtyard Marriot -- two queens each, $259/night. I booked the rooms before I registered and got a hotel through the conference.
If anyone is interested, I'll see if I can transfer rooms. Otherwise I'm cancelling by February 1st.

is that $259 per room per night?
-
Yup, $259/night per room.
If you go through the conference, you could have gotten prices of $180 or so for the downtown tower hotels. Last year we got rooms at the Austin Marriot for $209 (not through the conference, and I booked them 7 months in advance).
If you're downtown, you don't need to rent a car.

Dont fret .. You Am I are playing at the Bowery Ballroom towards end of March. I think its right after SXSW so you could always catch them up here. I saw them at Mercury Lounge last time and they were really great. Wish I could see them this time around but I'll be outta town.

What is so special about You Am I? I streamed their new album at the yeproc site, and thought it was terrible. I did like the new Dolorean and Apples in Stereo albums that were there as well. Sloan's wasn't bad.

Well, except that I live in DC, not NY. And right after four days in Austin chances are slim I'll be heading up to NYC to see a band... I'll watch for a day party announcement.

I haven't heard the new You Am I. I have a few albums from the mid/late 90s that evince great memories of my month Down Under.
Why am I answering Steny -- as if he likes 90% of the bands discussed on this Board.
From Allmusic:
Biography by Ed. Nimmervoll
Centered around the prolific songwriting skills of singer/guitarist Tim Rogers, pop group You Am I is one of the most successful and internationally admired Australian bands of the '90s. At home, they've scored three number one albums, Sonic Youth and Soundgarden are counted among their admirers, and Silverchair even named themselves after a You Am I song. Their influences combine the Who, the Small Faces, the Jam, the Clash, and the Replacements.
-
That's because 90% of the stuff discussed on this board is no better than mediocre. At least I'm not a sheep who swallows all the shitty indie that gets thrown my way.

For those looking for party/unofficial day showcases, www.ohmyrockness.com (http://www.ohmyrockness.com) offers a much better formatted list than donewaiting.com. It prints out better too.

Yes - I do know you live in DC. I meant, as an alternative if you can't catch the show in Austin, that show is still an option in NYC as it hasnt yet sold out. Their last show did sell out and it was supporting their 'new' album, which doesnt seem so new anymore.
-
Thanks, xneverx.
I think the idea of SXSW alone makes me feel a bit weary...Hence, NYC soon after seems nigh near impossible. Although, I could instead come back all rejuvenated and hoping to see a band every night. No telling!
-
For anyone interested in checking SXSW but not able to go, DirectTV is broadcasting it free on channel 101 from 5 pm til 1 am on the 15th thru the 17th .
It'll be interesting to see who makes the cut.

wired blogs about SXSW:
Music Documentaries @ SXSW (http://blog.wired.com/music/2007/03/music_documenta.html)
A number of music documentaries are premiering at South by Southwest this year that should become available on DVD release to people who aren't here or don't manage to catch them as they wend their ways around their (probably) limited distribution runs.
SXSW Gets It Together Preview-wise (http://blog.wired.com/music/2007/03/sxsw_gets_it_to.html)
If you're attending the music portion of SXSW next week here in Austin, the festival's excellent band preview site -- available only at the Austin convention center during show hours -- will spare you the headache of figuring out what to see (and remembering what you decided on). It picks ten bands at random, letting you preview a few of their songs, read their bio, and click a link that adds the band to your own SXSW calendar.

Attendees have had plenty of time to rest. Anyone care to recap?
Who was the "it" band going in and who came out as the "buzz" band?
(last year Artic Monkeys created a stir going in, but Editors came out w/ the buzz)
-
Will get to it tonight, perhaps.
-
by far sxsw is the best festival in the usa, maybe the world. no more virgin, lolla, all those big crowded festivals. every year i go i am i little hesitant as to what i am going to find. by the end of sat night i am always amazed. this yr i got back to the hotel at 3-4 am each night and only got 4-5 hrs of sleep each night. i never bought a wristband or a badge and was entertained from noon to 3-4am. punk rock on a pedestrian bridge over the river at 2am with 1000 people, a generator. no rules, no bouncers, beer and people flying everywhere. most venues are outdoors so if you can't get in, you can always hear. the party outside is sometimes better then inside. go from spindrift + dead meadow at jaimes. across the street to kings of leon, spoon, stooges at stubbs. down the street to black angels at mohawk. back to 6th at 2am to find out lee scratch perry still had not gone on at flamingo. then i find out other people at the flamingo had done the same thing.

I don't really need a full recap, but I'd love to hear a couple recommendations for new bands or artists that really impressed the attendees. (Bags, this means you!)
