Title: Bob Mould's thread o' positivity
Post by: sonickteam2 on September 14, 2005, 11:27:00 am
His new album is great. I have it, love it, and listen to it very often.

Was never much of a Husker Du, Sugar, OR Bob Mould fan, perhaps cause i never heard all that much of him, but Body Of Song is definitely a great record.

anyone agree?  or could i get an even better Bob Mould disc....

Personally, Black Sheets of Rain is my favorite solo record of his.

My question to you is, what songs on Body of Song really get to you? It's a solid record, but if you like that one, you might want to check out his self-titled solo LP from 1996. Body of Song sounds like a combination of a lot of his previous records rolled into one. For me, "Beating Heart the Prize" is absolutely killer, the one song I can play over and over and over again.

I was pleasantly surprised by Body of Song - but I still consider Sugar's Copper Blue the pinnacle of Bob's songcraft.  If you haven't already heard it - I am sure you can find it in a cut-out bin or on half.com for almost nothing.

I've always thought his voice was pretty weak, no matter which band he was in.

That being said, I can think of something positive to say about him, oh yes I can. I hope it doesn't sound too gay. How many guys start out as doughy, nerdy 20 year olds, and end up as hunky 45 year olds? Maybe his involvement with the WWE inspired him to get in such good shape?

not sure of the song names and numbers really, its in my car and thats where it been so far.

    i know i play 3,4,9 and 12 over a lot.

I have Copper Blue and like some of the songs, but this just seems a little more upbeat than i expected.

I do plan on buying another solo disc though, I'll get the one you mentioned...

Having everything he has ever released (I am a proud groupie of Mr. Mould and have been since high school), I'll tell you the must-haves (and other die-hard fans would toatlly disagree with this, but screw them):

 1) Sugar -- Copper Blue
 2) Sugar -- Beaster (very loud, very angry)
 3) solo -- Black Sheets of Rain (very dark)
 4) You can safely get everything Husker Du did, except for Land Speed Record. Get Candy Apple Grey last. Start off with Flip Your Wig or New Day Rising. Zen Arcade should be up there of course. (One of my personal favorites is Warehouse: Songs and Stories. It's far more complex than people give it credit for, and it's one of those albums that will sink in months later and stay with you for years and years.)

From there you can pick up the self-titled 1996 solo LP, Workbook, and Sugar's File Under Easy Listening. Besides (from Sugar) has some good moments, Poison Years (solo) is only worth it for some decent live tracks. I was not that fond of the Last Dog and Pony Show, so you can skip over that one. Modulate is a good record, but only for the patient and only after you have picked up the other stuff. I also have a soft spot in my heart for his Loudbomb LP, Long Playing Grooves.

Bob was a writer for the WWE for a while. He enjoyed it, but was also a ton of work that required a lot of travel and in the end it was a great diversion for him while he took a little time off from making records.

I agree with Bearman's recommendations, although my favorite album is Workbook.  However, the caveat here is that it's the album that got me into Mould (I hadn't had any Husker Du, even though I was a huge Replacements fan...usually the two go hand in hand).  So, I may have particular and biased love for Workbook as I listened it to it every day for 2 years...

Workbook is a great LP, but Workbook is to Bags what Warehouse: Songs and Stories is to me. It's just one of those records that clicked with a certain time of my life and I literally couldn't go for more than a couple of days without listening to it from start to finish. I can't quite explain that...but for me, that's what a truly great record will do.

Agreed...Copper Blue got played nonstop as well. That's another album that continues to send chills down my spine every time I hear it, even now.

I love Candy Apple Grey.  That was the first Hüsker Dü album I had.  Zen Arcade is also essential, although I don't see the Forum Nice Guy being crazy about that one.  Both Sugar albums are great.  I like Mould's solo stuff, but I don't know that any one album sticks out.  All have at least a couple of great songs.

In high school did an English paper on a song from New Day Rising.  I got the new CD haven't played it yet, but really like the packaging.

Was a huge Husker fan, kind of changed directions when Sugar came about, and got back into his recent stuff seeing him at the 9:30.

There was an interview with Bob in Magnet recently.  He says that he goes to the gym like every day, he is a gym bum.

LOVE the new disc.  It's got a little bit of everything - rock, ballads, dance tunes...If you like any phase of his career, there's something here you'll really like.

My favorite Husker Du records are the "Metal Circus" EP and "New Day Rising".  Not necessarily the best ones, but they were my first and they totally blew me away.  I still play NDR about once a week or so.

Can't wait for the 9:30 gig next month.

I'm going to see the 2nd night in Chicago and the Philly shows as well. So far it looks like a pretty standard setlist, heavy on Copper Blue, but a fair amount of other stuff from the new record and the Husker Du output. Reports are that it's a VERY solid show.

It's almost always the Gay ones, unfortunately for we Straight women.

On a more positive note, a friend of mine just saw him in London and knows him and tried to talk him into moving there. Bob said no that he loves living in DC too much. So you local Bob fans can take pride in that.

Listening to it for the first time on my way to work.  Track two annoyed me with the Cher effect on the vocals.  Thought I heard a bit of that effect in the back on track 3 too.  His voice is great without the fx.

I'm not a fan of the gay disco vocals either, though I think Modulate had some really underrated and interesting songs. "Lost Zoloft" and "Comeonstrong" blew me away. In particular, a song like "Trade", which doesn't thrill me on record, can pretty much bring me to tears when it's just Bob and his electric guitar. I don't always agree with his execution of songs (like the chimes and organ on "High Fidelity"), but the core of most of Bob's songs are pretty solid. In some form or other (on record, live, acoustic, electric, etc.), it works.

As for favorite LPs...jeez. Here's my list of favorites according to era:

 Husker Du top 5
 1) Warehouse: Songs and Stories
 2) Flip Your Wig
 3) Zen Arcade
 4) New Day Rising
 5) Everything Falls Apart

 Sugar
 1) Copper Blue
 2) Beaster
 3) Besides bonus live disc
 4) File Under: Easy Listening
 5) Besides

 Solo
 1) Black Sheets of Rain
 2) Bob Mould
 3) Workbook
 4) Body of Song
 5) Modulate

So what are we gonna do?  Bob Mould was a featured artist on last week's episode of The OC.  And it was prominently featured -- it was the montage music of the episode, if I recall.  And then they put up the "Body of Song" album at the end of the episode.

 Wow.

Shows in a few days, I'm getting excited (the Mould show, not the next episode of The OC!!).

Bags, all I can say is that the 2nd Chicago show was absolutely mind-bending. The only other show that might have been better (now mind you I never got to see Husker Du) was Sugar on the Beaster tour. And let me just say...Brendan Canty on drums and Jason Narducy on bass is one hell of a rhythm section. I couldn't stand still throughout almost the entire thing. The DC show is going to fucking KILL.

I'm really excited about the Sugar stuff more than anything else, you know, Copper Blue and so on. It's such a cool record, they're such fun songs to play live, I think that's gonna really be a blast... There are a lot of great songs in that stretch of my songbook, so that's the focal point. The new record is the focal point. I think Hüsker hits are a focal point. You know, a lot of the Workbook stuff is so great in the acoustic setting; I might just leave it where it works best. It's rock time.

I'm going up for the Philly show as well. It's just too darn good a time to pass up. Who knows if he'll ever do this again. When the band blasts into "Could You Be the One?" it just doesn't get much better than that. The way that Brendan sets that frantic pace through the Husker Du material is a thing of beauty. This is one of the better rock shows anyone can see this year. Hate to say it, but it blew away the Queens of the Stone Age show I saw earlier this year.

ah, to hear the praise of kindred spirits. new day rising was definitely a turning point in my little life.
and what a great ride since then. his career has given us celebration, angst, sorrow, regret, longing, love, lust, energy, comfort, and ever present celebration.
i always think of him when i see those commercials with the guy calmly listening to his ipod or equiv. yet his shadow or reflection is totally jamming.
that is what mr mould has always given me, my own little jam session.

It doesn't take them too long to get through "Hoover Dam" on this tour...but the ones that they really blast through are "Could You Be the One?", "A Good Idea", and "Makes No Sense At All". I can't friggin' wait for tonight's show at the Troc. Does anyone know if you can bring a camera in? Not necessarily to take photos, but just to have on you for later?

Mould Plans Live DVD, Acoustic Tour (http://www.billboard.com/bb/daily/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001262177)
 By Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

To chronicle his first tour with an electric band in seven years, Bob Mould will film a tomorrow's (Oct. 7) show at the 9:30 Club in his Washington, D.C., home for a live DVD. "It will be a seven-camera shoot with the same crew that [drummer] Brendan [Canty] uses for [the live DVD series] 'Burn To Shine,'" Mould told Billboard.com last night (Oct. 5) after his show at New York's Irving Plaza.

The trek, which winds down Oct. 15 in Los Angeles, has found Mould performing everything from Husker Du classics ("Makes No Sense At All," "Celebrated Summer," "Chartered Trips," "I Apologize") to solo cuts ("Egoverride," "See a Little Light") and songs from his sting fronting rock trio Sugar ("A Good Idea," "Changes," "If I Can't Change Your Mind," "The Act We Act").

Mould is also playing a healthy dose of his new album, "Body of Song," released in late July via Yep Roc. The set, which features Fugazi drummer Canty on drums, debuted at No. 22 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart.

Having rocked out for the past month, Mould will take some time off before returning the road for an 11-date acoustic tour that gets underway Nov. 11 in Cleveland.

Here are Bob Mould's acoustic dates:

 Nov. 11: Cleveland (Grog Shop)
 Nov. 12: Indianapolis (Vogue)
Nov. 13: Madison, Wis. (Stage Door)
Nov. 15: Milwaukee, Wis. (Shank Hall)
Nov. 16: Ann Arbor, Mich. (the Ark)
 Nov. 18: Louisville, Ky. (Headliners)
Nov. 19: Columbus, Ohio (Little Brother's)
Nov. 25: Annapolis, Md. (Ram's Head Tavern
 Nov. 29: Alexandria, Va. (Birchmere)
 Dec. 2: Philadelphia (North Star)
Dec. 3: Brooklyn, N.Y. (North Six)

A Punk Adventurer Returns in Both Old and New Form

 By JON PARELES
 The New York Times

Bob Mould was still a teenager in 1979, when his trio Husker Du played its first performance. By the mid-1980's, the band's melodic roar and Mr. Mould's frayed, exasperated, adamant voice had pointed the way toward both grunge and emo. Mr. Mould's next band, Sugar, continued to use Husker Du's old blare, but more recently Mr. Mould, 44, has tried to pull away from that sound: performing solo on acoustic guitar and, in the studio, toying with electronic sounds.

Yet neither his audience nor his ear will let him give up the electric guitar. At Irving Plaza on Wednesday night, he was back in a black T-shirt, leading a band through new and old songs with the old amplified roar.

The set dug into Mr. Mould's latest album, "Body of Song" (Yep Roc), along with half the songs from Sugar's 1992 album, "Copper Blue" (Rykodisc). Perhaps he was self-conscious about reclaiming his old sound; he opened the set with a Sugar song, "The Act We Act," which muses, "The act we act is wearing thin/ I think we wear it out again."

As he did with Sugar, Mr. Mould mixes guitars and keyboards in his new songs, particularly the swelling psychedelic drone of "I Am Vision, I Am Sound." His band includes Richard Morel on keyboards, recreating parts Mr. Mould played on the album. But with Brendan Canty (from Fugazi) on drums and Jason Narducy on bass and harmony vocals, many of the songs harked back to the power-trio impact of Husker Du, and the sound and songs hadn't worn thin at all.

That's because Mr. Mould was hardly naïve to begin with. "Walking around with your head in the clouds makes no sense at all," he declared in the Husker Du song he used as a final encore, and his songs, old and new, are filled with failing romances and other disappointments he's determined to overcome.

The songs are also built on punk simplicity and pop tunefulness: just three or four chords supporting well-shaped melodies. Mr. Mould is a skillful lead guitarist; he played barbed, Celtic-tinged lines in "Hoover Dam," and bits of jabbing hard rock elsewhere. But punk economy reigned. Most songs didn't bother with solos at all, and he often played two or three without a pause.

Mr. Mould's newer songs have more to reflect on, and they aren't in the rush that Husker Du's songs often were. He allowed himself a ballad now and then. But slowing down was a choice; Mr. Mould sounded perfectly at home when the music revved up to punk speed and his voice rose to match it. He probably won't keep playing this kind of music forever; he's clearly fascinated by other approaches. But many of his fans wouldn't mind if he did.

The Philly show was more polished than Chicago. Vocals were more up front, it was definitely the kind of show a band would do if they were being courted by a major label because it showed how darn musical those songs are. Chicago was more punk rock, fiery, and fun. Not that last night wasn't enjoyable...it was just wasn't as raw. That being said, tonight should be a blast.

Saw the show tonite, another great one from Mr. Mould...loved the confetti...he actually looked happy for most of the set...opened with "The Act We Act", ended with "The Man On The Moon", looked like a punker during most of the Husker Du stuff, overall I was very impressed

I'll chime in with my thoughts since I got to see a few shows on the tour. For me, it was the most fun, but when you combine all of the factors that made last night so good, it only proves why the 9:30 Club is still the best place to see a show (and no, I'm not just saying that because a certain guest drummer might be reading this). Sure, it was a hometown crowd for 3/4 of the band, but I've seen bands play their hometown before and phone it in. Sometimes they're great, other times it's a joke. But last night was probably the best I've seen Bob play with a band. The crowd was by far the most animated, and after having heard the band in different clubs, I can safely say that it was at the 9:30 that the stengths of everyone in the band finally meshed perfectly (at least from where I was standing). Not to mention that the band just rocked the hell out and Bob's performance was one where he gave 200%. It was fun to see the usual Blowoff suspects, and I've got to say that it was a terrific bargain of an evening too. Copeland did absolutely nothing for me...apparently they're even a Christian-type band. Eeeewwww...  Anyway, all in all, last night was a blast, and I can't wait to see the DVD. I got filmed rocking out like a dork during "Could You Be the One?", but if I make it into a Bob Mould DVD, I suppose that would be pretty cool.  ;)

praise and kudos to the hometown crowd. everyone was as gracious in person as on line.
i must admit i was afraid the "hometown" factor might overpower a usual bob experience, but it only served to enhance my fun. what total joy every minute was for me.
although, i hope none of the cameras captured me as i could not stop myself from dancing and sadly, have absolutely no rythm.
i've had this silly grin on my face for days now.
bob is awesome, as were all of you. thanks.

What a great show....I've seen Bob on all his tours (though not multiple cities for each -- I'm really just a poseur!), and this was a great show, harking back to the early 90s.  With the added spice of Husker songs and the change for D.C. that it's now his hometown show.

It was almost weird to see a happy, smiling Bob, but I'll certainly take it.  And while I certainly would have enjoyed the aftershow festivities, I happily headed over to the Marx Cafe for "I Fought the Big One" and lots of post-punk beauty...

Husker songs were the highlight of my night, even though I got into Bob during the "Copper Blue" period. He looked like a little kid!!! Rocking out to the old songs with the electric for the first time in decades, even I got excited, and I never show emotion at shows. One quick question ,bearman, were you in that group at stage left (stage left is left of the performer, not the audience, for those who don't know), because ya'll were the rockingest group of folks in the whole show! I felt privledged just to be rocking out next to you guys, especially during 'Man on the Moon'. Peace, "D.J."

I know all of those guys at stage left, but I actually really was enjoying Jason's bass at stage right. I was right up against the barricade, rocking out like a madman. It was so damn fun, the best time I've had at a show in ages. I think the next show I get to see is Social Distortion, woo-hoo!

Bob Mould on the DC show (from modulate.blogspot.com)

The homecoming show. The best show of the tour (to date). I don't think it will be topped. I felt a lot of love coming at me all night, from friends and acquaintances, from people I'd never met before. The entire day and night went without a hitch. The show was recorded, both audio and video, for an eventual release. In what format or form, I'm not certain. I want to spend some time with the footage, and with the hours of video shot along the rehearsals and tour. Brendan tells me everything looks and sounds amazing. I know the show was amazing - the best time I've had in a long long time. Everything was perfect.

The weekend was a rainy one. DC had not seen rain for 36 days, so it was welcome. The intersections were flooded, people were soaking wet, but it was nice to be home. I caught up on sleep, admired my new front and back yards, did some gardening and lawn work. Laundry, cooking, all the fun stuff! Got back to the gym a few times, and was awful sore. Combine that with eating normally for 3 days, and 5 pounds disappeared. The human body is a truly wondrous and malleable thing.

A few excellent words Bob posted on his blog's latest entry: "I miss my band already."

Let's hope that he'll do another tour with them again!
