Just got the word that the forum party is a go for Saturday the 6th. Which leads to the next question as to what shall we do?
Shall we kick things off at 8pm when doors open for the show or later?
That last holiday forum party in the backbar, featured a White Elephant or Pass around gift exchange which was fun.
There is a DJ rig down there that can be used for instance.
So are there any other suggestions?

Ooo, ooo, tour of the backstage? j/k
The xchange would be cool.
-
Secret Santa thingy would be fun - get rid of those unwanted xmas gifts! (pack of 3 brown polyester socks, anyone?)
once upon a time, Sir HC spoke of volunteering to set up at PA for a band to play... has a band been identified? might be better/easier to limit ourselves to DJ(s).
i aksed about about food/snack arrangements but i haven't gotten a reply. i'll let y'all know as soon as i do.
-
The DJ rig will be available and drinks will be at happy hour prices. The backbar is a bit small for a band to setup in.
-
So anyone want to take a stab at DJing?
-
Ok where were we..
-
fyi kosmo vinyl is still around he's just in an alternate universe for the time being...
-
probably won't be able to make it now ... i didn't hear confirmation of the party until now and i committed to a poker game earlier this week
-
Glad to hear it's offical. The little lady and I were planning on heading to DC this weekend anyway to celebrate the clean air, so this might work. Of course, the last few weeks have been a little trying, so who knows if any of our plans actually pan out.
So who all is in?
-
Sorry. Not going to be able to get out there for this one. Would love to though.
-
My wife said we'll figure out on Saturday whether we'll be there or not.
-
i should be there with my american wife-to-be.
we'll be at the hockey game earlier anyway.
can i wear a hockey jersey to the party?
-
i'll be there.
i still haven't heard anything about bringing in a few snacks. does the backbar serve food? if it does, they probably wouldn't want us bringing in our own.
8'ish start time works great for me. dont forget yer white elephant gifts!
-
i will try to be there, but i can't say i will for sure. will we all be wearing name-tags?
-
<img src="http://www.leisureagency.org/Images/Nametag.gif" alt=" - " />
-
The bringing of snacks has been approved.... Just make sure they meet or exceed the yummiest of 9:30 cookies :)
-
snacks: awesome. i'll bring a baked brie & baguette and/or other forms of yumminess, and maybe top up with some catered stuff from Whole Foods. the birchmere is kinda outta the way for me so i'll keep my contributions local.
nametags: kinda dorky yet very useful... we can also ID each other based on the secret 930 handshake.
-
Just watch out for the hands coming down for their drinks getting all the food. Then again, some interesting people to meet.
-
roll call?
-
you guys don't know the secret 9:30 handshake.
-
thats the one where you and shadrach get passed get a $20 and me and econo get a $10, with us then giving eddie and seth their consulting fee at the end of the night?
no takers on the offer to dj? if not mix cd and well crafted iPod playlists are an optional. if i ended up djing all night, it's likely you'll get my often threaten Norm Cook tribute. might also rummage through the vinyl sat and we can party likes its 85-95 :)
-
I already have a birthday thing (my own) going on at DC9 on Saturday, but I will try to pop over for some face time. Kosmo, I would be all over DJing were it not for that fact. It would be good to see some of you folks again, and get sonick and his american fiance to buy me some drinks. Been ages since that's happened.
-
you guys don't know the secret 9:30 handshake.
Now would be a great time to dig out the picture of that guy putting his wang through your earlobe.
-
I can't make it. I have my company party that night. But, have a nice time!
-
Will these people be at the Forum Party?
<img src="http://www.zonicweb.net/badalbmcvrs/richardandwillie.jpg" alt=" - " />
-
no takers on the offer to dj?
i'll pack a few CDs and can take over for a while, in case we feel the need to get dubby (or, alternately, my first few tracks would provide imputus for someone else to DJ  )
if i have time before tomorrow, i'll burn a few CDRs (yes, vansmack, no time for USB sticks) with MP3s of some lesser-known tunes, for trading.
-
Sounds like a small crowd...Kosmo, sweetcell...? I might try and swing by. 8/9 pm is this? Via Backbar entrance?
Welp, I'm always up for DJ Kosmo or DJ EvilSanta...I could bring the mixes he brought me last year. :) My PASTE samplers are a bit snoozy but I'll see what I can do.
Swapping stuff sounds cool, but it will be music trade for me, I don't need to give or receive any more gift crap. Oh, but my unfulfilled wish list: a search function or quote feature. :D
(Oh, and I have some free swag I'll bring.)
(Would be good to see your redsock - Happy Birthday! And sonick, I am hoping to see you both.)
-
rock on
i wont be there til about 10 or so, after the hockey game. but you know, i'll be there.
and i suppose i will bring some mix CDs in too. i dont really feel like DJing though, as i am still not good with the CD decks and will have already had a few upon arrival. ;)
-
sounds like critical mass will be around 9 or 10 - I'l try to stop by then
-
wheres the entrance to the backbar anyway?
-
on the left side of the building (as you face the front entrance), on 9th street just north of V.
-
if you walk a short distance past the entrance towards the parking lot, there is a very short staircase leading down with a sign that says backbar above.
-
what they said :)
-
The thought of heckling Sonick in his hockey jersey, and getting to see if he is as fine looking a speciman as he claims really does tickle me pink. However, we just got our VIP invites to Gilbert Arenas' birthday party.
-
I'll be there.
Question: Do I *have* to wear pants?
-
Boy and I want to stop by. It will be probably well after 9 as we'll be at the KC for the reading of "Twelth Night".
-
I hope I bump into you sonick - I might be an early bird.
-
oh come on you can be out past 10!!!
-
i'm probably way out of the loop on this, but do you need tickets to the show to get into the backbar? i'd love to come to the party, but I'm afraid I'll show up and they won't let me in because I don't have tix and the show is sold out. Sorry if I'm like 2 weeks late on this...
-
No you don't need tickets. Just go in the side door to the backbar, as indicated in page one of this thread.

yeah, it's almost 9pm, i live 2 hours away and i just got off work. needless to say i won't be there.
-
oh hell, i just got home now. i'm sorry we didn't make it. some of you i haven't seen in months! if not a couple of years!
who all made it out tonight? or are you all still there and i should metro right over?
-
it was nice to meet all you peeps!
-
just got home from my poker game, you guys still over there?
-
that was a lot of fun. attendees included kosmo, sir HC, el tee, sonick +1, dr. doom, the other doctor, bombay chutney +1 (who, incidentally, is not indian), sam, delancey and me +1. probably forgetting someone. if surly showed up, i missed him - would be too bad, i looked forward to meeting him. el tee's brownies (her mom's?) were tasty, and we're all grateful for the CDs she handed out :) i'll toot my own horn by saying my baked brie was a hit too. kosmo keeped us entertained with his mixed CDs - thanks! lots of good shit-shooting went down.
nice to put faces to the posts and see that you're all, for the most part, passably normal. i look forward to meeting y'all again next time something like this goes down... or, alternately, chatting one-on-one as we bump into each other at the club.
-
Sorry I couldn't make it folks. I'm in the middle of another round of shock treatments.
-
Thanks for putting this together. We had a good time and ended up staying a lot longer than we had intended. Nice to finally meet you guys.
-
Sweet, thanks for the summary. I'm not sure if I met Delancey or not, it was nice to see everyone else though.
El Tee's brownies were awesome... And it's worth noting that your baked brie was such a hit that a woman from an adjoining table brazenly helped herself to a slice without even asking... funniest thing I've seen in a while!
-
that baked brie had a tasty taste to it! nice to meet some of you folks. I might even be inspired to attempt to post more than once a month now! :)
-
Good times! Nice to meet some new folks and some people I rarely see. Thanks to all who brought the goodies to share! We'll do it again sometime soon,I hope.

-
thanks to everyone for coming out last night... it was great seeing some old and new faces. now that the backbar is smoke free, it's like being able to hangout in someone's very cool basement! we'll have to try another gathering soon...

the other doctor,
and by that, i meant "Dr. Anton Phibes", of course...

well, she did leave us a friggin' dollar after she was called out for raiding our feast... that, like, totally made it worthwhile
looking forward to doing it again (random freeloaders and all)
-
yeah! good times, good times. nice to finally meet a fellow canuck from the board. and the doctor of doom, who, quite frankly i was scared to meet because well, hes freakin Doctor Doom!!!
but he turned out to be a super nice guy!
-
Sorry I missed the Forum Party. The Gilbert Arenas bash was pretty good, as you might have heard. P Diddy was in the house.
My wife told me she'd go if Mankie and Surly were there, but I couldn't guarantee their prescence, so we didn't make it.
-
why would we have heard about Gilbert Arenas' party?
lame.
well, its ok that you werent there, it would have made it awkward to talk shit about you if you were standing right there!
-
Pulling out my old mixes has sort of light the fire to make Swagger a real event. Where the quotient of Rock and R&B Music from the 60s onwards trumps yet another BritPop DJ night.
I'm even getting inspired to finally getting around to making "Know Your Swagger" the third installment of the "Swagger - Rated R for Rock" series.
Under consideration
The Clash - "Know Your Rights"
Paul Revere and the Raiders - "Steppin' Out"
Phoenix - "Long Distance Phone Call"
T. Rex
Earl Greyhound
Isley Brothers - "It's Your Thing"
Gloria Jones - "Heartbeat"
etc...
-
Dang, I would have joined in.
"well, its ok that you werent there, it would have made it awkward to talk shit about you if you were standing right there!"
-
thats very self-loathing of you!
-
Sorry I missed it...I've been so swamped lately, as you can tell from my absence from the board generally for months (not that I'm assuming anyone's noticed). I haven't even been to a show since November!! Shit.
Hope to run in to folks at shows again soon... And maybe there will be something awesome like Curiosa this summer to get a crew to Club 932 at Merriweather.
-
If it's possible it would be cool to pick a recurring Fri/Sat night on which to have gatherings in the BackBar... i.e. third Sat of every other month... That way it's out there and if people can show it would go on, if not it would be canceled. As noted above it's easier to hang down there now that it's smoke free and one doesn't have to go very far if a quick drag is needed.
I'll need to figure out how to DJ on remote control, as it's more fun to hangout then being stuck behind the decks all night. Of course maybe we'll get more DJ volunteers next time out and the mix CDs can stay at home :)
-
WHY IS THE QUOTE FEATURE GONE, IT WAS USEFUL IF USED IN MODERATION!!!!!
and Sonick, it was nice to meet you too, I didn't realize I had such a scary reputation!
-
just a thought: seems like a lot of folks here, hipsters that we are, will be going to The Dears show on Sat Jan 20... might be another good night to meet up at the BB, before the show. or somewhere else in the hood if it doesn't open early enough. informally. i'm not promising baked treats. not yet.
-
I heard that it was the Jonathan Richman show that the hipsters were going to.
-
Actually this "hipster" will be at the Exit Clov/De Novo Dahl/Middle Distance Runner show and hoping to catch part of the Dears show. delancie is rumoured to be a member of MDR :)
-
shit, you're right, i forgot that jan 20 is the grand alignment of hipster stars... i too would have gone to the exit clov/dnd/mdr show had i not already bought dears tickets. dang.
back to the drawing board with that idea.
-
Thanks to everyone who put this together. Nice to meet some new people and see old faces. It is nice that Backbar isn't smokey anymore, yet, it's still pretty steamy down there!
I made out like a bandit in the silent gift exchange - thanks!
We should try to catch up [at shows] every now and again...I'll bring the special brownies. ;) I'm thinking of the EC/MDR @ BC show as well...if I'm not in bed by 10 that night. :p
-
I'll be at the Dears show...
MDR? I hope that I don't see any more of their CDRs anywhere in 2007!
-
Believe me, Joe ... I really hope we don't have to do the CDr thing much longer, myself! It's not very fun making all of those.
but yeah ... we're gonna cut the brakes on the Dears tour bus on january 19th, so sorry in advance about that. guess everyone will just have to come to the black cat.
