I have a professor at GMU who does nothing but sing praises for Skype..i've never used it, but he has talked about it at about every class meeting this semester

Good to know, anyone else?

i have it here at work...used it once (ie not too familiar with it).
i guess the obvious advantage is being able to "talk on the phone" with people outside the u.s. for free.
other than that, i don't see anything special about it that you can't do with a phone or aol instant messenger.

My situation is one where I will be calling out of the country... a lot. My main concern with skype is sound quality. Free is nice, but a choppy/grainy conversation isn't.

in that case, DC-mexico city sounded crystal clear to me.

I used to call Hungary (landline) from SF (1.5 MB DSL) and it sounded no better or no worse than if I called from my landline. But it was much cheaper....
You must get a headset though. Speakers with a mic will provide an echo on the other end.
