All my music is stored on my external hard drive and iTunes is directed to get files to play directly from it. Someone in my house unplugged the hard drive, and when i re-plugged it in, iTunes can't find any of the tracks. I currently have about twenty tracks that I CAN listen to. I don't think its possible that it can all be lost, but I did have a minor panic attack when I couldn't play anything. I had a tech guy set the whole thing up and really, REALLY want to avoid paying for him to come out again. Anyone know how to tell iTunes to draw from the external hard drive?

go to the advanced tab in preferences and make sure it still says the library is on your external drive
also look at the drive (through finder on a mac or through windows explorer on a pc) and make sure the files are actually still there

Try going to Preferences, then Advanced, then where it says "Itunes Music Folder Location," select Change and change it to the location where your external drive is.
Be VERY careful mucking about with this stuff, Itunes occasionally has the nasty habit of deliberately deleting an entire library if it thinks you're trying to steal music. Watch out what you click "yes" to, and if at all possible, back up your library somewhere.

I checked that tab and it said it was on the harddrive, yet still wasn't showing up. I decided not to touch anything because Dr. Doom scared me so much and just blocked it out of my mind, and about an hour later my computer finally synced with the re-plugged in hard drive and everything is fine.
Thanks for the help.

The Dr. Doom technique works again. :D

I can think of at least one Dr. Doom technique that doesn't work. <img src="http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/24.gif" alt=" - " />
