Bunions, nail fungus, varucas, even peeling nail varnish. It's just tacky let alone disgusting.

Ever think that these folks are changing their shoes once they actually get to their place of employment? I don't arrive to work wearing everything I will be wearing for the day. It's just too damn hot/disgusting outside to do so.

Then they should wear sneakers, aka trainers, and change them when they get to work. There is no reason to wear these flip flops anywhere outside of the shower. I don't want to see their ugly feet peering out of their suit pants.

One moron who works a professional job in my building was even wearing jeans and flip flops on a Thursday. These are the kind of morons that cause dress codes to be instituted.

i agree. flip flops are NOT professional work attire. and no, these people are not changing them when they get here.

and yes, men in flip flops are just stupid. period!

I used to be anti-flip flop as well.  5 years ago I got some before I went to Hawaii for my honeymoon.

On really hot days flip flops are much more comfortable than than shoes, socks etc.  Not to work though, unless I'm working from home and need to walk the dogs or something.  I am still opposed to men in leather sandals though.

Rhett, perhaps if your wife shaved her feet and hairy toes the appearance of her feet in flip flops would not be so offensive.

Men wearing sandals or flip flops unless it's at the beach,in the sand, is just kinda of...uummm....really not too cool at all....

Worst is at shows.  I was at a packed show once and had to get quickly to stage from the back (work not just being a jerk).  Well the crowd was full of gits wearing flip-flops so stepping on toes was a problem.  In the end I felt no pity for people going to a crowded place with inappropriate footwear.

I view flip-flops like I view biking shorts.  They both have their place, and when you wear them outside their intended place, it is just wrong.

As a wearer of flip flops, I agree.  Around the house, around the yard, maybe an errand or two, the beach, Rhett's house.  Yeah.

I agree with vansmack. Flip-flops are the best. Especially Reefs.
But, I don't wear them to work.
My mother commented that she hates women's sandals/flip-flops that make a lot of noise in the halls at work. I tend to agree w/ her...today, a co-worker is driving me batty each time she steps.

Where I live there are a lot of college males who insist upon wearing shorts, socks and sandals.  Ultimate tacky.  If your feet are cold, put a pair of shoes on those socks.

If you don't take care of your feet, then please don't subject people to them by wearing flip-flops or sandals.

And since i've never been a foot-person anyways, I've never liked when guys wear flip-flops / sandals (unless you're at the beach).

One time in school this asshole jock was wearing flip-flops and somebody stepped on the heel. He fell down the stairs a broke his leg and a few ribs. I wish I had been that somebody, because he really was an asshole. After that flip-flops were banned from school. hilarious!

As an engineer I have no fashion skills.  Our office follows simple rules, customers dress up to their level, otherwise cover the naughty bits and feet.

Heh... this dude I used to work with used to wear biking shorts to work.   And no, he did not change when he got to the office.  He was eventually fired -- not for that, but I'm sure that subconsciously, that was a factor in the decision.

This arguement is as stupid as whether one should wear their collar up or down.

Personally, I love flip flops and have no problem at all with men who wear them. Sure there are ways of wearing them that are less fashionable than others but that can be said about any article of clothing. Also, there are times when wearing flip flops isn't the best choice of foot  attire.

When it comes down to it, I have more of a problem with those who nitpick on what everyone else wears than anything in particular that anyone wears.

I didn't mean for this to be a pro and con flip flop argument. Though I'm enjoying the thread.

My original assertion was that flip flops are not work appropriate in a professional setting, and look especially foolish when worn with business attire.

I myself proudly wear Tevas in the summertime, almost always with shorts and a t-shirt, but occasionally with jeans and a t-shirt.

Nothing against flip flops or sandals, just think they are completely inappropriate in a business or businss casual atmosphere.

With an average of around ten posts a day on this board (and who knows how many on other boards), you'd better try to look "respectable" so that your coworkers think that you actually do something.

Who should care whether you go to work with shorts and sandals as long as you do your work?

Last year I had a design review in San Jose.  Since this was the first face to face meeting with this customer, we dressed with ties and all that.  They were wearing polo shirts and kaki pants.  The customer said that we didn't have to so overdress like that for meetings with them, they dressed "casual".  They thought everyone on the east coast wore ties to work.  Little did they know that we thought they were overdressed for a normal work day.

I've always been a Man Sandal disliker.  Just can't get in to it, except for Teva's or Reefs on the appropriate occasion (ie in the Bahamas or the Outer Banks).

Even as a chick, I only wear slides if my toes are appropriately pedicured.  Yucky feet are just so yucky!

I've found that my private industry companies have very strict dress codes.  No jeans ever, casual Friday isn't really all that casual, and suits are attire for the rest of the week.

Ok, but your shoe/sandal attire serves a function.  The guys in town here think it's hot. I don't usually nitpick about what people wear, but since this is the topic of discussion, I thought I would throw my useless two cents into the pot.  I did see a woman the other day wearing a bright orange halter top, while wearing what looked to be a 18 hour bra (with white stripes).  Now that's tacky.

Perhaps they would have caught the robber if they were wearing 18 hour jock straps.

I feel sorry for these poor fools wearing long sleeves and ties in the 95 degree heat. Well, not that sorry.

All of these people I see going to work wearing long sleeve shirts, and sometimes ties and suits, on days like this. I know they're probably going to air conditioned offices, but it must be hell getting there. That's why God gave us the short sleeve shirt (even the polo shirt, as long as you don't have a white t-shirt showing beneath).

Was just referencing a previous thread from long ago. Some people thought that look was tacky, others thought it was perfectly lovely.

Depends....is your collar up or down, and how much product do you have in your hair?    :D

Collar down, of course. And no hair product.

I actually do recall seeing the original thread now that you mention it. I guess it's just a habit - I always wear undershirts for pretty much everything except t-shirts.

Today's polo is white and rather thin. So the undershirt is pretty much necessary...

Personally, I love flip flops and have no problem at all with men who wear them. Sure there are ways of wearing them that are less fashionable than others but that can be said about any article of clothing. Also, there are times when wearing flip flops isn't the best choice of foot  attire.

When it comes down to it, I have more of a problem with those who nitpick on what everyone else wears than anything in particular that anyone wears.
where is this thread about the collars up or down?  my friends have started asking random guys wherever we go why they do it and none of them seem to have an answer...at any rate, i'm sure the thread is quite entertaining...

oh and i agree with Bags on the pedicure thing...i'm for wearing flip flops if you want, but at least take care of your feet

As much as I hate to bring this post back up, I did like the Left Coast's response:

 Flip-flop flap is so yesterday
 - C.W. Nevius
 Tuesday, July 26, 2005

The great White House flip-flop flap hit the Bay Area this week.

 The reaction was predictable.

"Whatever,'' said Nikki Cheng, recent Cal grad. "We were like, 'So what?' ''

In case you have missed this rampaging debate, it can be summarized quickly. When the Northwestern University women's lacrosse team won the national championship, they were invited to visit the White House and meet President George Bush.

 Nothing notable about that.

What was notable was the footwear some of the women chose to wear. Although all of them were very nicely dressed, some of them wore the casual beach-style sandals known as "flip-flops.''

The photo was taken July 12.

The controversy continues to this day.

Depending upon your point of view, the naked toes were either the last straw in a fundamental breakdown in etiquette or just another example of how far behind the curve most adults really are.

"I think many people over 25 are shocked by the casualization of America, '' says San Francisco's Charles Purdy, author of "Urban Etiquette'' and the proprietor of www.dearsocialgrace.com. (http://www.dearsocialgrace.com.) "I don't think the rules have caught up yet. Flip-flops have gotten more fashionable. The girls' defense was that these were nice flip-flops.''

And they were. In case you haven't noticed, flip-flops aren't found only in the bargain bin any more. Cheng, who belonged to the influential Cal Fashion and Student Trends club before she graduated, says a trendy pair of floppers can run more than $70. But after all, you are buying fashionable, year-round footwear.

 That's right, year-round.

"Everybody wears flip-flops in the winter,'' Cheng says. "Even I do it.''

The numbers reflect the flip-flop uptick. Dora Radwich of the NPD Group, an international market research firm, says their research shows flip-flop sales totaled nearly $190 million in the 12 months ending in May. And that included a 65 percent increase in sales of men's flip-flops over the previous year.

In other words, you better get used to them.

"I have even seen some guys wearing them to the prom with tuxedoes,'' says Michael Wood, vice president of Teenage Research Unlimited, which is based outside of Chicago. "It has just become acceptable.''

Not everyone agrees. There is a generation -- Purdy talks of walking in San Francisco with his 70-ish aunt, who always wore gloves and a hat when she came downtown -- that is suffering flip-flop shock. When the story hit in Chicago -- where Northwestern is located -- one newspaper ran a headline quoting one player's brother -- "YOU WORE FLIP-FLOPS TO THE WHITE HOUSE?''

"I don't know if shocked was the right word,'' says Purdy, the etiquette expert, "but I was a little surprised that no one in their group or in the White House saw a problem in it. There is a feeling that people have lost their sense of when formal dressing is required.''

In fact, asked to think of an occasion when flip-flops would not be appropriate, Gail Fiero, founder of the Internet flip-flop sales site www.walkingonroses.com (http://www.walkingonroses.com) -- where the new sales motto ought to be "Elegant enough for the White House'' -- said none came to mind.

"I probably wouldn't wear them to an elegant wedding,'' Fiero said, "but everybody else is.''

Especially out here on the Left Coast.

"I've worked on the East Coast and the West Coast,'' says Noel Gallagher, media relations representative at Cal, "and we are much more flip-floppy out here.''

Some think the real problem is the name. A "flip-flop'' doesn't sound like something an adult should be wearing. Perhaps because of that, some men's shoe manufacturers are attempting to re-name their product a "thong.''

Good luck with that. Personally, not only do I not want to wear a "foot thong,'' it is an image I am trying to get out of my mind. Maybe a better alternative would be to call them "slippers" or "slides," like they do in Hawaii.

So what should we do? Place an anti-flip-flop measure on the special election ballot? Ask civic leaders to denounce the flip-flop menace? Wood, from the teenage research firm, has another suggestion.

 Chill out.

"I think this is very different from the noise about bare-midriff shirts and low-rise jeans,'' he says. "This isn't about baring your belly. It is about being comfortable and practical.''

Look, Cheng wears flip-flops and she graduated from Berkeley in May with a double major in mass communications and political science. Do you think she would have done better if her toes were covered?

"I think every generation has to make a fashion statement'' she says. "You wouldn't think it would be flip-flops, but it was. Personally, I would have preferred something more interesting.''

You want interesting? I've got two words for you Nikki -- penny loafers.
