Title: System of a Down at 930??
Post by: chokeychicken on April 28, 2005, 03:18:00 am
So apparently, System of a Down is going on a "guerrila" tour, playing small clubs to promote the release of their new record.  All that's been released right now by Pollstar is that they are playing venues the size of the Metro in Chicago, and First Avenue in Minnesota.  Usually, this also means the 9:30 club is on the list of stops. Anybody know any plans of SOAD stopping at 930???!

Well, even locally, 1,100 people disagree with you, plus we already know your opinion from your obviously biased posting in your "column" for this week - conveniently posted under another thread.  How about we make a deal; if you don't like a band - don't abuse the journalistic code of "unbiased, non-personalized reporting" by flaming them in your "press", just don't promote their event, non?  Of course, shutting up seems to be your most difficult challenge.

no, 1100 people don't disagree with me, they just like watered down crap

if i didn't interject my opinion into the list, i wouldn't have a job, the WHOLE PURPOSE OF THE COLUMN is the fact that i have an opinion.

how about we make a deal: if you don't understand the journalistic difference between a white house correspondent and someone who writes a personal column about upcoming club gigs, keep your mouth shut.

audioslave is 10% as interesting as their previous bands ... it's like chris cornell came in and said: "ok, forget about all that interesting stuff you played with your last band, and get ready for some bland crap"

 while i'm not a fan, i like some of system of a down's stuff, i think they're interesting ...

Hoya, that's bullshit. Where does your "opinion" reflect in listing  a VERY sold-out concert - for a group you have such major contempt for - in a column that supposedly designed to list upcoming "things to do" for the weekend?  I think your "opinion" is to show what a cool, up on everything, hipster you are...unless you're supporting scalpers  - and you intended to feed their trade. IF anyone really cared about what YOU thought, your negative crap would make people feel badly about themselves and their tastes..I just think you're ridiculous in your pursuit of attention...by using bad language, cracking un-funny jokes about rape, murder and suicide - and slamming many very entertaining groups playing at 930 - and their fans. I'm surprised you're still allowed to post here. Bet your supply of free tickets starts to dry up.

well said. His "column" certainly seems to have young, recently reformed hipster, who used to listen to this crap and now must distance himself from it at all costs, written all over it.

this is pretty boring stuff, but if you really want to know ...

my job is twofold: 1) to list the "hot" things going on in town for the weekend and 2) to inject my personal opinion, writing style, "voice", whatever you want to call it

you can get a full list of what's going on elsewhere in express, i guess they pay me to write the column because they want my "voice"

that said, you're seeing an unedited version, i usually push the envelope and let my editor decide what to take out or tone down

shit!!! you caught me!!! ok, i'll give it up ... i'm actually sponsored by ticketsnow.com ... if you look closely (and it looks like you really follow my work, thank you), you'll notices that the second letter in every fourth word spells out "t-i-c-k-e-t-s-n-o-w")

my opinion is just that. my opinion.

i think that audioslave is a watered-down version of their former bands, and, frankly, this opinion isn't exactly original ... it isn't fucking breaking news that many people think audioslave is vanilla wafer crap ... as i said in a previous post this morning, i'm not ripping on people for liking the music, everyone approaches music from a completely different perspective

I'm not getting this whole making jokes about rape and murder....I must have missed some pretty incredible discussion on here.

If you can't tell from this board that people have very strong and emotional opinions about music, then that's how you believe there can be a fully objective column on what's coming up (there is an objective columng, it's called a "listing").  Personally, I want a bit of commentary to know what kind of show/music I'd be in for.

Maybe some people think its just annoying that he puts it on this board.  Maybe some people believe if they want to read his snotty opinion, they'll take on the free copies from the dudes that stand in the way of everyone trying to get to the Metro.

I mean, as far as we're concerned, we already know that all of these things are going on. But i suppose some people like hearing about all the Sold out shows  :)

I don't get Express and am not in a place where I can pick one up readily, so I like that it's up here.  What the hell, it's about music....

this is a message board about music and local shows, i figured a list of upcoming weekend shows would fit in here ... or we can just keep talking about 007, star wars, bike riding, tom cruise and katie holmes,  the orioles, the red socks, the yankees

Yeah, beacuse this board has such stringent guidelines about what is proper to post.  How dare he violate them by posting something as obscene as his opinions on music that is playing locally.

Audioslave blows!  System of a Down is much more interesting.  My 2 cents.
Title: Re: System of a Down at 930??
Post by: HoyaSaxa03 on April 28, 2005, 12:06:00 pm
by the way, this is what i wrote about audioslave:

"Alt-metal supergroup Audioslave features ex-Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell and the remains of leftist heroes Rage Against the Machine. Audioslave, playing a sold-out gig at 930 Club, have sanded their political and arty edges into bland mainstream rock."

take out one word ("bland") and i'd think all of that is pretty damn objective ... rage was political, soundgarden had arty excess, and both of those qualities have been smoothed out for audioslave, which unabashadly makes mainstream corporate rock

again, music is completely personal, most rock fans obviously like mainstream corporate rock, and more power to them ... what's your big beef about that short paragraph?

heres more about that System OF A Down band

Mars Volta is touring with them this summer. (http://www.fmqb.com/Article.asp?id=81734)

System Heading To Mars This Summer

 April 28, 2005

 System Of A Down

System Of A Down will head out on a two-month North American tour beginning in August, and plan to bring along one of the few Rock bands odder than themselves: The Mars Volta. The arena tour kicks off in early August with a third, still-unannounced band to join the bill.

"We're very excited about getting out on the road this summer," said singer Serj Tankian.  "It's been a long time since we've done a major American tour, and with The Mars Volta on the bill, I think we're giving our fans a terrific show."

As previously reported, System is in the midst of a 10-date "guerilla" club tour, playing last-minute gigs in smaller venues around the country. The band will be the musical guest on Saturday Night Live on May 7, ten days before the release of the new album Mezmerize on May 17

Some people should realize that just because a band is doing a club tour doesn't mean they'll be playing 9:30, or any DC-area club for that matter.

ahh the good ole days when i caught the soad, incubus, snot tour. hard to believe 2 of those bands are now capable of headlining areans. i always thought their shows better fit for smaller clubs. ANNNNNNYWAYS. check out this ticketing policy from the metro show - pretty cool, if not inconvenient as hell.

 "TICKET INFO:
Tickets for System Of A Down will go on sale Sunday, May 1 at noon. Tickets will go on sale only at the Metro Box Office (Hi-Fi Records, 3728 North Clark Street) and all transactions will be CASH ONLY. Ticket buyers may not line up before 9:00am. The person buying the ticket MUST BE THE PERSON GOING TO THE SHOW. YOU MAY NOT PURCHASE A TICKET FOR SOMEONE ELSE. Ticket buyers will be sold ONE ticket each and at that time will receive a wristband. In order to enter the Metro on the day of the show, you must return with your ticket AND your wristband; the wristband must be attached to your wrist and UNTAMPERED with. "

Ladies and Gents, this is how you handle big shows like the Audioslave fiasco.  Big ups to the Metro for handling it that way.

One problem, I don't go to shows alone (usually, if I do, they're small).  I have to get every single one of my friends who wants to go down there online?  Not going to happen.

I understand what they're trying to solve, but they're making impossible for too many people to go to a show they really, really, really want to go to.

Hoya - are you also writing for Salon? :-)

 "Unlock" the Audioslave song

Audioslave has a nifty gimmick to promote their upcoming record, "Out of Exile": They're making one song from it, "Your Time Has Come," available for free download -- but only after a million fans have gone to this page and clicked on a link to "unlock" the song. The download is, for some reason, PC only, leaving us Mac users out in the cold. But given how disappointingly mediocre the coulda-been-great Audioslave's past offerings have been (the band is Rage Against the Machine with Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell in place of Zack de la Rocha), perhaps that's the best place to be.

I would much rather find a way to get people downtown to get a fucking wristband then try to wait in line in a virtual waiting room trying to get audioslave tickets.

9:30, take note.  The Metro knows how to run things.
