I'm loving the new (and older) ones by Comets on Fire, Priestess, Slayer and I'm working on Mastodon and Maiden. Would love some recommendations on other bands/records to check out. Doesn't need to be new, but I do want it to rock from front to back. I'm training pretty hard for a race and I need some music that doesn't let up.
Recommendations?
Thanks!

One of my favorites...white trash, fist-pumping, serious drinking music:
<img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000002G13.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" alt=" - " />
or if you need something a little heavier:
<img src="http://eil.com/newgallery/Helmet-Meantime-6066.jpg" alt=" - " />
To me Helmet always sounded like a beat-up car with its muffler gone. Awesome.
One more, for good measure: <img src="http://eil.com/newgallery/Kyuss-Blues-For-The-Red-284124.jpg" alt=" - " />
-
kyuss is essential if you don't have them already.
for fist-pumping, adrenalized ac/dc-type rawk, check out alabama thunderpussy, orange goblin, RPG, bible of the devil, the last vegas, speedealer, and zeke.
for heavier, sludgier, doomier metal, check out dixie witch, beaten back to pure, valkyrie, earthride, the hidden hand, acid king, big business, black cobra, cavity, floor, and dove.
i could go on and on, depends on what type of rawk you prefer...
-
Listen to CLUTCH.
Hands down the best rock band in the universe.
-
How about Camera Obscura. The rock.
-
hey snail, did you book the dixie witch show at the velvet in november?
-
Burning Brides
Icarus Line
The D4
-
mastodon's new album is brilliant.
High on Fire's Blessed black wings will definitely get you moving.
-
Not really traditional rock in the guitar bass drums sense......but it's heavy and it freakin rocks. A few songs from it are in my running playlist.

Great responses, thanks very much. And I'll surely check out any others that come in.
Man, seeing that Paw cover brings back the memories. I loved that album, but somehow it slipped away. Same with Meantime and Ask Questions Later.
Am going to pick up that Kyuss album tonight after work. Good call there. I might grab Meantime and Penance Soiree as well.
Have got both Burning Brides and have played them to death.
What's a good Clutch to start out with?
Isn't Camera Obscura a Belle & Sebastian off-shoot?
Snailhook, I've copied your whole post into a word document and when I have time to kick back with some relaxants, will start exploring them, as I haven't heard of most.
Am still trying to get into Mastodon, and it's not for lack of trying. I like it, but after six or seven straight-through spins, I can't recall a single tune. I never really got into Leviathan either.
-
i did book dixie witch at the velvet in november.
also check out boris, sleep, and...
the mighty HIGH RISE! (japanese psych that is the perfect combination of motorhead, blue cheer, and hendrix)
-
Paw brings back memories of the old club for me. I think it was Grant Fitch who at one point took off his guitar and went crowdsurfing. I think at one point they took out a bunch of lighter fluid and set the drums on fire. That was a wild show.
-
For what race are you training?
-
Ramones
-
How about John Mayer. The rock.
-
doesn't totally fit in w/the rest of the stuff mentioned on here, but for someone like me who is barely capable of rocking -- let alone RAWKing -- when the mood hits i usually reach for mclusky. particularly "mclusky do dallas."
-
The Jim Carroll Band
FEAR
Nirvana
Cheap Trick
Hawkwind
Godfathers
Iggy Pop
-
hawkwind is indeed great driving/running music. i'm trying to get them booked at rock and roll hotel in january...if the gods will give me enough money.

Do you have any idea on the lineup? Will it be Brock/Turner?
Pardon my ignorance, but what is rock and roll hotel? Is it that house where you feature acts?
-
nah, my house is 611 florida. too small for hawkwind-related acts.
the rock and roll hotel is the new venue on h street, capacity 300.
not sure who is in the current line-up, but brock is definitely in and turner is definitely not. probably richard chadwick, who has drummed for them for the past 20 or so years.

Wow, they have two new releases!

guaranteed excellence. saw 'em in 1995 and 1997 and both were amazing shows.

It's a century bike ride out near Strasburg, can't recall the formal name. To prepare, I've been going down to Haines Point and doing laps. That can get boring after 10 or so laps, so the music is key.
And if Hawkwind comes around, I'll be there front and center. I'm late to them, but I listened to Hall of the Mountain Grill again today and just love those guys.
-
if i tried 'training', -hell, even just stretching, to Helmet's Meantime or Strap It On, i would probably blow both my knees out and an elbow too. :D
good luck in yer race!

They are all good, but start here. Also, Live at the Googolplex would be a good intro. It's kind of like a greatest hits album.

"Pass the Hatchet" - the first song off the new Yo La Tengo album

Exactly! :) As for albums to check out, the self-titled mentioned above is excellent, as is Pure Rock Fury. Stay away from Elephant Riders, possibly their worst (but still would blow other bands away) album. :(
Rumor has it from what I've heard, even though we're not rock (damn two plugs in one day's posting time) that people love to work out to our albums since they're upbeat and driving tempos!

How about a little JB? Of course, I'm talking James Blunt here.
-
Some more that rawk from front to back:
Jesus Lizard - Liar
Big Black - Sounds About Fucking
Zeni Geva - Nai-Ha
-
one second of zeni geva is heavier than 100 hours of disturbed. and way less annoying.
-
I hope this is a joke. If not, you have a lot of balls to mock Alec for his choice in music....

How about Ratt? They brung the rock.
-
I just added the Clutch album to my lala queue. I haven't listen to much metal or 'rawk' since Somewhere in Time. I'm curious it even appeals to me anymore.
-
I have to say Rhett, you've really been struggling of late. Not that you were ever especially clever, but over the past few weeks, your digs seem much more forced. It's like you're really reaching to get a snarky comment out, but then it just falls flat.
I think the suburban lifestyle is making you soft.
-
What is YOUR secret for maintaining your snarkiness, in spite of living in the burbs? Remaining single?

Dude, that's what I need right there. Hell, I'd be able to rock out to Codeine or Godspeed if I could just meth out beforehand. Could probably get me a couple more wifes and shit.
-
Speaking of drugs, how about Eric Clapton doing "Cocaine"? That one's a rocker!
-
How about Ratt? They brung the rock.
rhett's onto something here...out of the cellar is one of the great pop-metal albums of all-time, right up there with pyromania and fair warning.

I would add Holy Diver to that list. Ronnie James Dio is a lion among men.

totally..."rainbow in the dark" might just be the best metal anthem there is. well, maybe after "run for the hills."

Motörhead - "Ace of Spades"
-
I thought this thread was about rawk, not metal.
The most rawkus song ever is:
Jack The Ripper, by Link Wray
-
"rumble" is pretty rawk, too.

Amen snaily, you really got your musical cred together(more than me), but Ripper is from 1963...just before rock took a wrong British turn that it still hasn't fully recovered from. It was a swansong of sorts. The end of an era. <img src="http://bestsmileys.com/music1/18.gif" alt=" - " />

Black Sabbath members reunite without Ozzy
By Dean Goodman
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Ozzy Osbourne's bandmates in British heavy metal group Black Sabbath have reunited without the singer for a planned tour early near year, a spokeswoman said on Wednesday.
The threesome have joined forces with vocalist Ronnie James Dio, who sang in the band during two stints in the 1980s and 1990s after Osbourne was ousted for his prodigious drug abuse, but will bill themselves as "Heaven and Hell."
Lest anyone think that Osbourne has been ostracized again, representatives for the so-called "Prince of Darkness" issued a separate statement, announcing "there is only one Black Sabbath," and that he would join forces with his old Birmingham buddies for a tour and new album late next year.
Original Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi and Dio "are working on a project together which has nothing to do with Black Sabbath," the statement said. "However, Ozzy wishes Tony and Ronnie much success in their project together."
The members of Heaven and Hell -- Dio, Iommi, bass player Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward -- were not available for comment. The group's spokeswoman said Dio and Iommi were in England writing songs together.
The combo takes its name from the first album Dio recorded with Black Sabbath in 1980. This lineup recorded another studio album in 1981 and a live album in 1982, after which Dio quit. He reportedly complained there were not enough photos of him in the live album artwork, while Iommi reportedly referred to the diminutive head-banger as a "little Hitler."
After a stint at the helm of a successful 1980s metal band bearing his last name, Dio briefly rejoined Black Sabbath a decade later, by which time Iommi was the only original member left and the group had lost most of its fans.
The founding foursome, famed for such jarring metal anthems as "Paranoid" and "War Pigs," buried their various hatchets in the mid-1990s for a successful series of tours, although plans for a new album never came to fruition. After years of being snubbed, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year.
Osbourne concurrently found mainstream notoriety as a reality TV star, thanks to his role as the perpetually confused paterfamilias in MTV's "The Osbournes."

This record fits that description quite nicely:

Haines Point?! Brutal! I've run there several times and I really don't think there's any music out there that will get you through the boredom of doing laps around HP. More power to ya...

It can get boring without music. In fact, what happens is that I end up spending the whole time thinking/stressing about work. But put the tunes on and it's just bliss.
For the record, the top discs I ended up training with (and continue to) were:
The Sword -- Age of Winters. So great. Every song has like three awesome riffs at various points, and it just rocks. The production isn't very good, but the rawk comes through nevertheless. Kind of sounds like Monster Magnet and Louder Than Love-era Soundgarden. One of my favorite albums of the year.
Comets on Fire -- Blue Cathedral. Best band in the world right now, they rule so much cock it makes all others meek and helpless.
Slayer -- Christ Illusion. I don't really love this album, but it sounds great when working out and it certainly never drags.
Other frequent spins:
Paw
Kyuss
Helmet
Comets on Fire 'Avatar'
