Title: So what happened this a.m.?
Post by: Bags on April 12, 2004, 11:30:00 am
I figure the hfstivalers tried to wreak havoc on our forum and posted lots of spam...?  I don't understand why; I thought the fight was with another local forum, and I thought it was over?

Again I say, those kids have shown me that we're an awfully civilized forum after all...

Who was the joker that got them interested in hacking the forum?  These things usually don't happen for nothing, you know.    Did someone step on their toes over on one of their bboards?

I think it's a bitter pill over their forum being centered on such a lameass event.

HFStival used to be a grand affair, but that's over.   The first three bands have been announced:

 OAR
 The Offspring
 Papa Roach

I'd say chances of this being an interesting HFStival are 1 in 50. Beastie Boys *plus* a good 3 - 4 bands like Modest Mouse would have to show up on the lineup to get me even thinking of heading out, and I'm *not* optimistic. HFS is announcing three bands per day until Saturday, when tix go on sale.

OAR are playing at wolftrap this summer on 8/10 as well...

I was afraid to post on their forum.  And Markie did, but was more civil than you'd ever imagine --they all liked him rather a lot.

I didn't see anything incendiary, but I only looked over there the day this all happened (last Wed or Thurs?) and this morning; nothing was there today....

In one of those classic cases of a double standards,  the Canterbury Tales quotes being posted today often included the copywrited by Librarius text.

Was that anything like Duck Tales or Chip & Dale?

I do appreciate the Tales-- it's been way too long since I've read them.

Thank you, spammy people, for making my day more literary!

all the users taking part in the attack were newly registered since yesterday.  at time of the bigyawn attack this forum's registration system was down, which was mentioned on the hfstival board.  and at least one of the people taking part this morning has the same email address. i'm sure that some reverse ip address lookup will produce interesting results as well.

i say put dog poo in a paper, then light the bag on fire. ON THEIR FRONT PORCH! hillarity to ensue when the try to stamp it out.

why screw with the 930 forum? if they close it, wouldn't that just make their real target more popular?

This is even better....you get a drawing pin ( I think you call them push pins over here), put dog-doo on the point, then tape it pointy side out to their doorbell. When they push the door bell they prick their finger then immediately put it in their mouth like you do...only they get dog-doo in their mouth. That's the best you guys!!!

Thumbtack, usually, but a push pin is also correct.

Looks like I missed all the "fun" this weekend - Kosmo, sorry you have to deal with this nonsense, but thank you for doing it on our behalf.

Ditto, Kosmo -- THANKS.

But Smackie, that's what's so odd -- there wasn't any fun this weekend.  This whole rigmarole went on last Thursday, but it ended the same day.  But here, 5 days later, the kids pop up.  It's quite strange, really.

Actually all the posting activity was this morning and very coordinated at that.  Seven posters involved, including one who was registered under a couple different ids.  The "prank" has now been mentioned at the hfstival and they are claiming to being unfairly blamed for it.  It's also interesting to note that since disabling a bunch of recently registered users nothing else has taken place.

I've heard Modest Mouse rumors around the water cooler here in my office.

But, I also hear the show may be up to $80 (they can't, can they?).  No way no how....

Things I would be unwilling to do to see any of these bands:
 spend money
 go out of my way
miss a moment of my life i could be spending elsewhere
 (sacrifice drinking time!)

probably because sony offered modest mouse to the festival for free in exchange for airplay for them or another equally "noteworthy" artist.

Chimbley and shoeshine, I'm with you.

Now, if you didn't already realize that the flamers infecting us this morning are about at the level of bratty, not real bright grade-schoolers, just check the titles of the threads they posted  here. (http://dc9.myikonboard.com/viewforum.php?forumid=1)

What this is accomplishing besides besmirching HFS even further (though we know they have no official ties to HFS, but only represent their listeners) is unbeknownst to me.

that's more than enough to make me nostalgically wish for the good old days:

 1993
INXS, Iggy Pop, Ned's Automic Dustbin, Stereo MCs, Belly, Matthew Sweet, X, Velocity Girl.

 1994
Cracker, Toad The Wet Sprocket, Meat Puppets, Counting Crows, James, Pavement, Rollins Band, Violent Femmes, Afghan Whigs, Gigolo Aunts, Tuscadero, Greenberry Woods, Lotion, Madder Rose, Edsel

Man - did I get hot & sweaty rockin' out to Ned's back in '93. I had to partake of the sprinkler shower than afternoon. I also remember bitching and crying quite a bit when my friends wanted to leave early. I still get a lot of abuse about my 'favorite band' - INXS. Must have been some heat related affliction causing me to want to stay.

That '94 lineup was pretty sweet at time. I was seriously into James then - I've still got this pretty 'happy' looking James daisy t-shirt from that afternoon. I thought it was rather amusing, since my real first name is..you guessed it - James.

And the Whigs just rocked that night. They played at dusk with the sun in their eyes. Dulli had on these Bono-as-the-Flyesque sunglasses & a big fat Ron Jeremy sticker on his guitar. Short, but oh so sweet.

94 was probably the last decent one they had if I remember correctly. Primus, Echo, Blondie, General Public etc etc....after that one it went to shit.

Who was onstage when Courtney Love showed up and stage dived...that was pretty funny too.

These are the fests I've been to:

 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999

93 and 96 were my favorite years, though I think I had the most fun at 98 -- just the folks I was with, not the music so much.  If you ask me, they started to suck after 98 (though looking at the lineups I was surprised; I remember them as worse as they were, but definitely decided not to go because there were only 2-3 bands each year I'd want to see...).

Bags & Mankie were having a discussion recently regarding the quality of current musicians/bands, and specifically which will "stand the test of time".

I have a prediction of one that most definitely will:
 -
 -
 -
 -
 -
 -
 -
 -
 -
 -
 -
 -
 -> Dishwalla!    :eek:

 Must have been mid-afternoon
I could tell by how far the child's shadow is stretched out and
 He walks with a purpose
 In his sneakers
 Down the street he had
Many questions like children often do...
 He said
Tell me all your thoughts on God?
And tell me am I very far?
 Must have been late afternoon
On our way the sun broke free of the clouds
 We count only blue cars
Skip the cracks in the street
And ask many questions like children often do...
 We said
Tell me all your thoughts on God?
Cause I'd really like to meet him
And ask her why we're who we are?
Tell me all your thoughts on God?
Cause I'm on my way to see him
So tell me am I very far
 Am I very far now?
 It's getting cold
 Picked up the pace
How our shoes make hard noises in this place
 Our clothes are stained
 We pass many cross-eyed people
And ask many questions like children often do...
Tell me all your thoughts on God?
Cause I'd really like to meet him
And ask her why we're who we are?
Tell me all your thoughts on God?
Cause I'm on my way to see him
So tell me am I very far
Am I very far now, am I very far now, am I very far now?
Tell me all your thoughts of God?

93, 94, 95, 97....I was sure I went to 5 of them, but can't see another line-up that I would've bothered my arse to show up for.

i find interesting that no one has stepped up to the place on the hfstival.com forum and described how the this was was defaced... i guess doing so would be to reveling   :p

add to the fact that some of the same screen names that were posting on this forum, are on the dc9 board as well.

ggw, it's called CYA....these hfstivalers are the kind of nut job kids I see hacking into my home computer and screwing with me!  Techie geek teenagers scare me!!

Kosmo -- same answer.  Though I did just sign up for HFStival.com and asked why on earth folks flamed DC9's board.  The main HFStivalers didn't even know DC9 have a board, and I see them as way too cocksure and egotistical to *not* take credit.

Does WHFS now play Jay Z songs?

I haven't listened to that station in years so I have no idea of what they're playing these days...

I'm going to the HFEstival, so I guess that makes me a fucking moron.

don't know Finger,

Apartment 26 is son of black sabbath's bass player band.

The Living End is a aussie punky rockabilly band and the only bad i would care about.  imagine the clash/green day with standup acoustic bass player.

Why no mention of pre-1993 festivals?  The 92 edition at the PG equestrian center with the Soup Dragons and the Charlatans was pretty good.  It's hard to believe that I haven't been to an hfstival since '97, but when one looks at the lists of bands. . .

Few more rumored:

 Modest Mouse
 The Postal Service
 The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
 Lostprophet

I don't think it was technically called "HFStival" yet.

I went to the first one -- Tragically Hip, Jawbox, The Pursuit of Happiness.....

"This Saturday April 17th @ noon, Join HFS at the 9:30 Club where you can purchase your tickets and AVOID PAYING ANY SERVICE CHARGES!!!"

I thought the club was tickets.com?

how do you know it is not happening, they were on the top 10 countdown on MTV 2 last night, the one that had hoobastinks at #1, you may have to face the fact that Modest Mouse is about to be a lot more popular than before

Actually, they're playing according to the hfetival.com kids. They've figured out every one of those white pictures on the main page of whfs.com. They're one of the 3 getting announced Thursday, apparently.

Don't you love it when your heroes sell out? First they get a car commercial, now the HFS festival. Good for them. Way to go Modest Mouse. Take a bow and stop being so modest!

I always guessed your name was Serge.

That '94 lineup was pretty sweet at time. I was seriously into James then - I've still got this pretty 'happy' looking James daisy t-shirt from that afternoon. I thought it was rather amusing, since my real first name is..you guessed it - James.

As a service to you (as well as to help me figure out exactly whos confirmed, rumored, and not), here's the list of whats known so far.

 CONFIRMED:
 Jay-Z
 Violent Femmes
 Yellowcard
 The Offspring
 Yeah Yeah Yeahs
 OAR
 P.O.D.
 Papa Roach
 LostProphets

RUMORED (but confirmed off the record, according to AbsolutePunk.net):
 Cypress Hill
 New Found Glory
 Modest Mouse
 The Living End
 Taking Back Sunday

Cypress, NFG, and TBS are pretty certain to me.  Looking at the outlines of the pictures on WHFS.com, it seems clear to me now that the bottom middle picture is the outline of a well-known TBS promo pic.  Ditto Cypress on the left-side second to bottom and NFG on the middle second-to-bottom.

If the rumored bands are all true, I think I'll strongly consider going to this (might make me the only user on this boards at the show).  Jay-Z should be fun.  I'm still a fan of Taking Back Sunday based on the days of basement shows on Long Island.  Modest Mouse, NFG, and Violent Femmes interest me on a cursory level.  Plus I'm a sucker for the festival atmosphere, which is why I go to Warped Tour every year to walk around the merch booths and sit in the dirt reading Milan Kundera novels.
