No, that's why I'm asking before I buy it. I read bad reviews of it and want to know what people think of it.

I heard one of the new songs on KEXP and thought it was pretty ordinary.
-
Ahhh, cause I read more bad than good :)

I bought it and have listened to it a few times. It's kind of like candy corn. Tastes great at first but gets a little sickening after awhile. I've been surprised by how much hate has been spewed by reviewers on it, since it's not *that* bad. I like the song Empire, and there's a couple others on there that sound good.
It won't change my life (unlike Comets of Fire, who RULE COCK) but its fun to put on every now and then. I liked the first one better.

how many review have you read? maybe you should just listen to it!

It's not so great...certainly doesn't measure up the first. Really disappointing.
They were godawful on Letterman the other night. Will still check them out tomorrow since I've never seen them, but I'm skeptical now.

they've got to be better than the drive by truckers!!!!!
-
i really like the band, loved the first record, and couldn't make it through the first three songs of the new album before turning it off. take that for what its worth.

I thought they were awful as well. And then Fergie came on last night....

I didnt care for Empire upon the first listening. Ive listened to it a few times since then and I'm starting to like it more than the first album. They put on a great live show. Tom is an incredible front-man. Started the set with Shoot the runner (newest single) and ended with Clubfoot that turned Webster Hall into a frenzy. They played for about an hour straight (no encore). Tom engaged the crowd, from singing to clapping to dancing, he's non-stop energy, danced the entire night on-stage. Serge was incredible as always. I'd definitely recommend checking them out at v-fest (if youre going).
It started with Mew and onethousand pictures, so couldnt have asked for abetter night.

we havent gotten so bad that we judge a band by how they perform on letterman?????
oh no.
-
Nah, I go by metacritic. Where it appears the latest Drive By Truckers is beating the latest Kasbian, 76-62. Then again, almost everyone is beating the new Kasbian.

If I were promoting my new record on Letterman, SNL, Leno, etc...I'd sure as hell not mail it in the way they did. Which gig matters more to them, their appearance on national TV in front of millions of potential record buyers or the gig they play the next night in front of 500 fans, most of whom have already bought the record?

what would be more important to you?
besides, its a tired ass show, and you're playing in front of a bunch of yahoos from the Midwest on their NYC vacations. almost all of whom have assuredly never heard of you and dont care about your "techno music".
surely Kasabian is MORE psyched for tomorrow's show than Letterman.
and did you ever think that not all bands are about how many records they sell?
-
You're missing the point. Eros already pointed out that they are playing for millions of people (watching the TV) who have not heard the band. It is a big deal being on Letterman, Leno, etc. Kasabian could care less about the studio audience!
Have you heard of bands cancelling a gig just to be on Letterman, Leno, etc...? Happens quite often. Tapes 'N Tapes was the last one (they canceled their Philly opener slot for the Futureheads just to be on Letterman)

The studio audience for those shows couldn't care less, I agree. But there are plenty of people watching on TV who might.
They might be more stoked about playing tomorrow, maybe they don't give a shit...I don't know.
And, yes, I do think that a majority of artists (particularly those signed to major labels) care a lot about how many records they sell.

i guarantee you kasabian is not one of those bands.
-
my statement had a typo and that meant to say "not all bands are ALL about how many records they sell"
and thanks BookerT for the insight, you must know those guys pretty well then, right?
(for the record, i dont like EITHER of the Kasabian records)

well said
-
Major label bands care about how much records they sell cos they want to fend of the repo-man if they don't sell what's expected...
Indie label bands care about how many records they sell cos it could be the difference between having peanut butter sandwiches and peanut butter AND jelly sandwiches....
ALL bands care how the records are selling...period.

from everything i've read about kasabian they are all about "making it" ... absolutely nothing wrong with that at all, but (from what i've gathered) they're not your prototypical DIY group who don't care how many records they sell or fame they get ... they seem more on the oasis side of that spectrum

read people. i never ever said some bands dont care about selling records. but is that all they care about?
none of us can know for sure, cause we dont know all bands, but being an art form, i fucking doubt it.

bad... bad... bad...
-
still, am i the only one that thinks the saying "well they sucked on letterman so i dont know about them" is a fucking ass-stupid way of thinking????
can i be the only one?
-
I think you're quoting yourself.
Here's the direct quote from someone who actually liked the first album:
"It's not so great...certainly doesn't measure up the first. Really disappointing. They were godawful on Letterman the other night. Will still check them out tomorrow since I've never seen them, but I'm skeptical now."

On its face, yes. But there's so many bands out there that you have to go on what you see and hear. If you've heard/read a band isn't that great, and then you see them do a crappy performance (haven't seen it, so am just quoting), then it's easy to think, okay, they're not for me.
It might be silly to just conclude they suck but most of the people on this forum are coming across a dozen new bands per week/month and there's often not enough time to delve deeply into every one.

yes, i was
but you know what i mean.
this isnt the first time i have heard this sort of talking.

What I'm trying to say is that no one said it like the way you did. The quote was from eros who is actually a fan of the first album. If you dislike both Kasabian records, then why are you checking them out? Are you a scenester?

Let me clarify my original fucking ass-stupid statement. I like the first Kasabian record, the second one is disappointing. I've never seen them live before (thanks to Oasis for showing up late that night at Merriweather), but will check them out tomorrow. My enthusiasm is a little dampened because their new record sucks so much balls.

i am seeing Kasabian because (in order of importance)
a) i cannot stand the Drive By Truckers
b) they are on the same stage before the New Pornographers
c) they arent bad live.
joe, are you SURE you are not rhett?
-
i like their first album, haven't heard their second ... they were really bombastic live, put on a good show, and were really nice guys at the dc9 after party ... epileptics steer clear, _intense_ light show
-
Naw, I'm much, much cuter than Rhett. We just talk the same. I happen to like his posts..they're funny at times :D

Letterman sure was good playing the dopey fool talking to Ann Heche about her lesbianism.

letterman's still the best dopey fool on tv. it's great watching someone that funny who just doesn't give a fuck at all anymore.

1st album: Very Good.
Live Act: Excellent.
2nd album: God awful.
The whole Oasis attitude without having written DM or WTSMG: Pathetic.

this is the correct answer. the new album is unlistenable. it's really unbelievable how bad it is. it rivals this new razorlight piece of shit for the worst album of the year. both are terrible albums.
