Title: Dinosaur Jr
Post by: sonickteam2 on July 08, 2005, 05:42:00 pm
just a heads up for the Dinosaur fans:

looks like they've been playing almost only songs from "Dinosaur Jr" and "You're Living All Over Me" on their tour.  nothing at all from Where you Been or Green Mind, so if you plan on brushing up on Dino songs, check out their first 2 discs.....their last show

 -06/15/05  Gent, Belgium

SETLIST: Gargoyle / In a Jar / The Post / Repulsion / Bulbs of Passion / Tarpit / Raisans / Little Fury Things / Forget the Swan / Kracked / Sludgefeast / Budge / The Lung / Freak Scene
ENCORE: Just Like Heaven / Chunks / Does It Float

three songs from bug. bug, dino and ylaom are the only three albums that all three original members were on, so why play anything for the later ones that were pretty much mascis solo albums?

does that mean that sonic and i are going to be at the same show?  how delightful! (i mean that, sincerely.)  anyone who likes dinosaur, is a friend of mine, indeed!  except for that one guy, and he knows who he is.

I'll be there. Rock on all.

I like that they're playing all of YLAOM, but I do wish there was a few less Dinosaur songs and a few more Bug ones. Also, I wouldn't mind the Wagon since it's a favorite, but I know they won't for obvious reasons.

did you know that the tony hawk "boom boom huck jam" will be in dc the same evening as the show?  could there be a slim chance that some pro skaters/bmxers/motorcross riders might show up?  those guys are party freaks and might make a nine thirty monday interesting!

I've been jazzed for this show as soon as they announced it. If you want to hear stuff from Green Mind, Where You Been, etc., Jay plays all the "hits" in his solo shows.

i'll be at the show.
i'm actually about to head out to the norfolk show right now.  originally i'd only planned on going to norfolk, but seeing bardo pond opening made me decide to go ahead and do dc as well.  i was in town so i was able to get tickets at the box office.  the $1 service fee made it the same price as norfolk was, considering norfolk was $5 cheaper before fees, they came out to be the same price.

How was the show, Distance?  Do you know what the setlist was?

I personally thought the Norva show was great.  Good fun, great playing, and they all seemed genuinely happy to be there (even though J doesn't talk much anyway).  Lou seemed to enjoy himself very much.  J effortlessly plays so well.  I had earplugs in, and have never seen that many Marshall stacks on stage in a club setting before.  My chest was pounding.  A nice surprise!

magik markers was very entertaining, especially once people in the crowd started heckling them.  a lot of people went outside to smoke during their set.
bardo pond's set was good, but i think i enjoyed the set i saw of theirs in atlanta in 2003 better.

times were approximately 30/50/90 for the 3 bands.

I took a quick look.  Besides the CDs, they had the re-release "Freak Scene" 7", plus 3 or 4 shirts, all old designs with new dates on the back (i.e., the purple cow design).  $20, I think.

I wish I had seen Magik Markers.  I didn't arrive early enough because the Norva only listed Bardo Pond as support; they were dreadful, just as I remembered.

I was at Norfolk and Carrboro last night. Norfolk was better.

 Merch:
 Freakscene 7" - $5
 4 pack of buttons - $5
The first three Dino Jr. CDs - $15 (Each, obviously)
 Three shirts - $20 (each)

I, too, got a setlist at Norfolk. Distance - if you taped, I'd be hugely interested, as I said over on Netphoria last week.

i saw the norfolk show, too. i enjoyed every minute of dinosaur jr's set...j's rig was insanely loud and his tone just perfectly fuzzy. i've seen metal bands with more gear sound quieter. murph was pounding the crap out of the drums, and lou sounded good; they all seemed to be having a genuinely good time. j ripped off many inspired solos, and the highlight of the night for me was "the lung."

bardo pond has been one of my favorite bands since 1995, and my opinion of them is biased because they're good friends of mine and hooked me up with guest tickets for the show, so of course i'm gonna say they were great. however, of the 20 or so times i've seen them, saturday's set wasn't even close to their best. isobel's vocals were mixed way too high and the guitars were not loud enough. soundmen always feel they have to raise the vocals, but in bardo pond (much like in my bloody valentine), the vocals are designed to blend in with the instruments. that's a minor gripe, though...i still enjoyed bardo and i've never seen them half-ass a show.

majik markers, as always, were entertaining but not as good as the sets at noise against fascism and no fun. they exist partly to challenge, confront, and antagonize close-minded audiences. there were plenty of "you suck" and "get off the stage" jeers, to which elise replied back, "why don't you get up here and play? i'll play your dick man!" i thought it was pretty funny. majik markers, like the bunnybrains of the '90s, are really carrying the torch for retardo-rock. to "get it," one really needs a sense of humor and an appreciation for anything post-modern or reductionist. it is "punk" and "DIY" in its purest sense, saying "we can't play, but we do, so why don't you?"

set times were 25 for MM, 50 for BP, 90 for DJ. the norva was nowhere near sold-out, though there was a good size crowd.

i knew i was in for a great night when i walked in and heard wolf eyes on the p.a....i was like whuuuut? this is the 9:30 club?? hearing Love as I made my way outside the club was pretty pleasant too. I gotta say I think I enjoyed the encores even more than the actual set but dino put on easily top 5 sets ive ever seen at 930 club. magik markers destroyed as alwayssss....bardo pond were amazing.. i just think their sound is more suitable for a small, intimate venue.. i couldnt really soak in the fuzz the way i could at say a warehouse next door or dc9 (hint, hint). that would absolutely melt my senses.

anyone else notice all the parallels to the sy show last summer? with magik markers opening, 2nd band being female fronted psych w/ singer dressed in white and 80s alt rock band as headliner doing double encores.

 Forget the Swan
 Little Fury Things
 Repulsion
 Raisans
 Bulbs of Passion
 Budge
 Kracked
 Sludgefeast

As great as last night was, it wasn't as good as Norfolk. The band just had a bit more energy then. Still, 95% as good, and I enjoyed both (and Cat's Cradle) immensely.

Well the club was too smokey and too loud and it was too crowed, some really tall guy pushed his way in front of me and all these people kept stepping on my toes and then after the show one of the stage bouncers wouldn't give me a setlist....

But really....Great fucking show.  I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but whatever expectations I had were far exceeded.  Great setlist and man do I love the electric guitar.  In the right hands, the louder the better.

I had a great great time.  Thanks 9:30.

I, too, had a wonderful time. Saw a bunch of old friends at the end of the show. I wore earplugs for the first time since i was a kid, and boy were they useful!!!

Mascis is the man, maybe the greatest guitarist of our (my) time (Thurston might be tied).

I thought it was just crowded and smokey enough! and was very happy with the setlist.

one funny story, this cutesy little girl kept going back and forth to the dudes in front of us (we were like 9 people back right in front of J) and saying "my friends are up there, hehe" and then she started bringing more and more people up there. but as soon as Dino came on these two dorks came from nowhere, stood right in front of here and started playing air guitar like madmen! it was awesome, and for the record, i dont mind standing near sweaty guys rocking the air guitar, it was amusing!

on a sad note though, i almost prefer his solo tours. (dont yell at me!)  but this show was great and something i thought i'd never do again.

I enjoyed the show but thought there was just a shade too much of the sheer guitar squall onslaught. Hearing those songs was great, but there was almost too much of a pattern of starting out one of the old classics and then shifting into another Mascis freak-out. For some reason, that never struck me when I saw the J Mascis & Fog shows, including the one earlier this year. And so I have to join the camp that prefers the solo shows, as blasphemous as that might sound.

I thought Bardo Pond was pretty boring. The Majik Markers were interesting, even kind of funny. If they would settle into an actual groove, they could conceivably go somewhere since they have the look down pat (tough-chick Leather Tuscadero on vocals and guitar-violence, 1950s prom queen on bass, and swirls of hair on drums).

Also loved the show, next to Ween last year probably my favorite yet at the club.

Bardo really clicked with me towards the end of their set and Dinosaurs just seemed so fresh!  Have they come back to save rock?  I hope they keep touring and start writing again.

Anyway a question - the DJ set between Bardo and Dinosaur was sublime.  Was that Sun City Girls or Cambodian Rock I heard?  IF you know the playlist let me know.

 Good times.

 Cheers,
 Toby

oh, i meant to include that in my original post.

BARDO POND SUCKS.  come on, really. the drummer was good, but the 3 guitarists were boring at best, and usually just sounded like they were "warming up" still!!

and that girl!! oh lord. she looked like some rich girl who's mother bought her an "indie band" so she could show off her sheer talent of whining and playing instruments she learned in 6th grade. and playing them like a 6th grader.

   what a buzzkill they were.

I concur - Bardo Pond was awful, awful, awful. It's a classic example of a band that clearly was a bunch of guys who wanted liked to jam and said one day, "Hey, we need a singer... and if we got a girl, maybe people would come just to look at her." Awful music. Also, she plays flute about as well as I do, and I've never played flute.

Cat's Cradle gave us Superchunk as an opener which was really cool.

j. showed the nine thirty that the show shouldn't have been at nine thirty.  (lou even saw a huge rat the last time they played.)  nothing like going to see the jesus of guitar in one of the best bands ever at a place overcrowded with people just standing there and chain smoking, too worried about who's next to them or how to easily get back to the bar.  j. blistered through songs after another like he himself was responsible for recarving out the histories of rock.  some songs seemed way too short by a normal dinosaur standard, though.  i agree that a j. mascis, minus dinosaur, show can be a much better musical performance, and if he was just a bit taller . . . i would almost be convinced that j. is the almighty buckethead.

and as for the nine thirty . . . man, their female staff rock!!  no offence to the guys, but everytime i go to the club, the men i see that work there, usually have that "i'm working, leave me alone, and get the hell inside" look on their faces, while the women are beautiful, refreshing testaments to how it should be done.  they smile and sometimes say, "hey, how are you?", making me feel all warm and toasty and glad i came to the club.  first the girl who checked my id for digable planets, and then the girl who said hey to me as i was leaving last night.  go, go nine thirty girls!  you f-ing rock!

and about that pause before dinosaur came on, with the lights going down, and then nothing for atleast five minutes, digable planets did the same thing, last week.  weird.

actually, you couldn't be more wrong and ignorant of bardo pond. image and lack of ability have NOTHING to do whatsoever with that band. you should argue that point to gerard cosloy and chris lombardi of matador who signed them in 1996 and released four of their records and are still huge supporters. or perhaps you should argue your points with sonic youth, mogwai, dinosaur jr, and godspeed you black emperor, all of whom personally asked them to open for them. but since you can play flute as well as isobel, i'll let you off the hook since you're clearly affecting me with your epic psychedelia.

another classic example of a music "fan" who confuses his opinion with gospel as narrow-minded preconception. if you don't like it fine; textured, drony, sludgy psychedelia isn't for everybody. but dismissing them as hacks who decided to pick up instruments last week just to form a "cool" band just shows that you need to do your homework a little more. you have no idea how well-respected bardo pond has been since they've been doing this music since 1992.

i dislike a lot of music, especially a lot of the crap people lose their shit over on this board, but i would never say something so stupid as "they clearly decided to form a band so they can jam and get some hot chick to sing so people can look at her." that just makes you sound like an out-of-touch fifty year old grump. sorry.

by the way, i thought last night was far superior to norfolk. every band sounded more inspired, the sound was better, and the vibe at the club seemed a bit more electric to me.

i like a  lot  of psych music. and am usually a fan of that stuff. they are/were quite boring live, and that girl needs to go.

the rest of em may just be able to form a real band.

the sound is always better @ 930 than at the norva.  i've seen several bands at both.  the drunk redneck ratio is always higher at the norva too.

I must have missed the part where I "confuse[d] [my] opinion with gospel as narrow-minded preconception." I don't recall going, "they were horrid, and anyone who disagrees is a fool" or anything of that nature. They sucked, in my opinion, and the girl was the worst part of the band. Her singing was awful, her instrumentation sounded like a 6th grader, and everyone who came with me literally had a headache after their set.

You're more then welcome to like them, whatever, doesn't bother me. But the fact they've been around since 1992 and were on matador records (both of which facts I knew before you posted) doesn't make them great or even good, and the fact that you'd even feel the need to bring it up only shows how ridiculous your retort is. As infantile as "they suck... no they don't... yes they do" may seem, it makes alot more sense then "they suck... they've been around since 1992" does.

I was annoyed by the crass dissing of Bardo Pond too.  Those guys definitely are in it for the music and I know they've been blowing minds for years.  I love the fact that they are taking risks and improvising heavily.  For that reason, they lose a lot of people.  It pays to LISTEN close to bands like that.  I hope to see them again soon.  Maybe at the Warehouse???

Some people at the NorVa show were merciless. "Get off the stage" and "rubbish" were heard several times. I don't have the heart to yell at bands (unless it's in jest) though, so I felt bad even though I shared the sentiments.

left bardo pond guitarist broke the same string on 2 guitars.  he also had a hard time putting/keeping his guitar strap on.  this kept the other members of the band waiting between songs.  how loud was dino jr?  where i was between the show and first encore when jm's guitar was left in feedback, everyone near me had their fingers in their ears.  it was so loud that no one clapped for the encore.
the male bouncer with almost full arm tats and a beard made people put out their cigarettes as soon as they lit them during dino jr's set.  much appreciated.

This is the only negative thing I have to say about the whole evening.  Bringing J's guitar back on stage for the sole purpose of having a roadie blast insanely loud feedback for 3-4 minutes was ridiculous.  People who were already wearing earplugs were holding their hands over their ears.  People were leaving because the feedback was just painful to sit through.  You're loud.  We get it. Enough already.

Other than that feedback stunt, I thought the show was fantastic.  The band sounded great.  The crowd in my area was pretty cool and having a good time.  Definitely a fun night.

I caught the last 10 minutes of Bardo Pond after some sweet bacon chili dogs at Five Guys on Georgia avenue. What I saw was a sweet psych-y, pretty drone, kinda reminded me of Growing with some mild MBV, I liked it more than the mp3s I heard.

What was the deal with the lights out so the crowd could listen to a whole Dead Meadow song for Dinosaur played?

Tight set from Dinosaur though. I had thought the J. would have had an even bigger guitar set up; I thought he had at least 8 cabs but counted 4, not that it wasn't loud enough though. I thought Eyehategod was going to be the loudest show of the summer, but J. has now claimed that spot.

There was a dude with a digital camera taping right in front of J. the whole time, if anyone has contact info, I'd be all over that video. Going to checking freesofree.net for boots if any are up soon.

Capt'n....the video was for an official DVD release of this reunion tour. You won't find any footage anywhere until it's released.

How does it sound?  I can't get a membership to Dimeadozen because they apparently have too many users.

 Loud, Alternative and Still Definitive
 By KELEFA SANNEH
 The New York Times

Those loud and melancholy songs, those monumental guitar lines and mumbly vocals: Dinosaur Jr. helped create the sound that would define the alt-rock boom of the 1990's. But so what? On Thursday night, the three founding members - the singer and guitarist J. Mascis, the bassist Lou Barlow, the drummer Murph - came to Central Park to put on a glorious show, and to remind fans of an older connection.

You might call Dinosaur Jr. one of the first great 90's alt-rock bands, and you might also call it one of the last great 1980's hard-core punk bands. As teenagers, Mr. Mascis and Mr. Barlow made a breakneck racket with a group called Deep Wound. But they evidently loved the tradition of hard core enough to warp it.

With Dinosaur Jr., they turned up the volume while slowing down the tempos; instead of an angry bark, there was a Neil Young-ish twang. Mr. Mascis's guitar often came unglued from the rhythm section; his chords often floated instead of chugging; his solos were vast and wobbly. Hard core was built to express furious certainty, and they remade it as a music of furious uncertainty.

This reunion tour was strictly devoted to the albums "Dinosaur," "You're Living All Over Me" and "Bug," from 1985, 1987 and 1988, respectively. (All three were reissued this year by Merge Records; the second two still sound great.) Onstage, the members never acknowledged what followed this trilogy: an unhappy split, after which Mr. Mascis continued on with the band while Mr. Barlow led his own group, Sebadoh.

One of the night's first songs was "In a Jar," which begins with one of Mr. Barlow's energetic bass lines, along with Mr. Mascis's idea of a pickup line. He mumbled, "I'll be grazing by your window, please come pat me on the head/ Just wanna find out what you're nice to me for." Like many Dinosaur Jr. songs, this one is made up of parts that don't quite fit neatly together, and the most violent transitions were announced with equally violent fills from Murph.

This band was once famous for its absurdly loud live shows (Mr. Mascis seems intrigued by the transformative power of loudness), but you can't make too much noise on a stage in the middle of Central Park. No matter: even in the most hummable songs, like "Freak Scene," Mr. Mascis' sudden flare-ups sounded savage as ever.

The night ended with "Chunks," a longtime live favorite; the song was written by the short-lived Boston hard-core band Last Rights. It was a fearsome song by a fearsome band; one version of the original vinyl single had a picture of Hitler on the cover. But on Thursday night, it sounded like neither a lark nor a digression. The chugging guitar was a gleeful acknowledgment of the music that came before those three albums. And that shouted vow - "You couldn't stop us even if you tried/ We'll be together until we die!" - was a wry acknowledgment of everything that happened after.
