Title: Calls Will Roll
Post by: kosmo vinyl on July 12, 2005, 08:59:00 am
The Super Deluxe five show edition with bonus DVD. It's a bit of a busy week at the club so feel to chime in other shows....

Who is in for the following

 A. Caesars w/ The Sights & The Golden Republic
 B. The Dead 60s & Nic Armstrong and the Thieves w/ The Bravery
 C. Teenage Fanclub & The Rosebuds
 D. Kaiser Chiefs & The Cribs
 E. That 80's Show

I'll be DJing for Caesars and Teenage Fanclub shows, and bouncing around during Nic Armstrong and The Kaiser Chiefs.

It's interesting to note the back to back shows of  Teenage Fanclub and De La Soul considering they once "collaborated" on a track called "Fallin" for the Judgement Day soundtrack.  Wonder if there will be any guest appearences at the Fannies show....

I've only got a ticket for the Teenage Fanclub show.  Which of the others should I not miss (that I can still get tickets to)?  What's "That 80's Show," by the way?

I *knew* there were tickets I was supposed to get last night!

I'll be at Teenage Fanclub. I'd like to see the Kaiser Chiefs but I will be communing with My People at the Hillside Festival (Arcade Fire, Weakerthans, Sam Roberts, Stars, Lowest of the Low, and more).

And though it's not on the list, I'm thinking of Tegan and Sara, at least for the high chick factor if nothing else. ooops - please.....noone tell my wife I said that.  :)

Isn't That 80's Show a bad TV show?

Berlin & The Fixx

The Sights are good, can't comment on the Caesars or Golden Republic.  The Kaiser Chiefs are suppose to an energetic pop show.  Besides Teenage Fanclub I'm most excited to see Nic Armstrong.

I will definitely be at the Caesars/The Sights/The Golden Republic show. I never miss an opportunity to see The Sights. The other two bands are fun as well.
I would like to see The Cribs opening for The Kaiser Chiefs, but I will be on a plane to Chicago for Lollapalooza.

Well tonights the night and hopefully work visa have been properly sorted out.  Once again talent loses out to the Flavor of the Month as this show should be packed to the rafters.  But unless it's spoon fed via the OC or Pitchfork, band like The Fannies remain cult bands with low attendence figures.

Since I played my indie Power Pop card at the Ben Folds show, expect Jack Johnson, Matchbox 20, John Mayer, 3EB, DMB and Wallflowers tonight   ;)

i might drag myself out of the apartment and make it down. i was hoping it was going to be fairly empty, but all you folks seem to be ruining things. no, if there are 500 folks i'd be shocked. i know the rosebuds will tour like crazy when their album comes out in the fall, but they're still the clincher for tonite...

Kosmo...if you're taking requests...just queue up the live version of The Dears "Pinned Together, Falling Apart". At 15+ minutes, it's perfect for a bio break, grabbing a refreshment, chatting with friends, etc.  :)

I'll be there by 8:30 in order to catch the 'Buds.  So, I'll get to hear most of your sets, Kosmo-licious!

New Fannies album is mellow...not sure how I'll like it on a long term basis, but it's nice stuff.

wow.

that was one hell of a show, leave it to the old folks to show us how it's done ... rosebuds surprised me, they were really solid, had some great harmonies working ... speaking of harmonies, the fannies were just fantastic, pure solid power pop all the way through, felt like they played their greatest hits album with a couple of the new ones (which i didn't quite care for) sprinkled in ... went on for two encores, at the end of the second they played the bevis frond's "like a diamond"

the teenage fanclub frontman (forgive me for not knowing his name) was one of the nerdiest guys i've seen on stage, he could barely complete a sentence and seemed so awkward up there in between songs ... then he'd launch into a hit and i'd forget all about it ...

Teenage Fanclub are exhibit A to prove that major labels once signed bands based on talent and not the ability to put on eyeliner... Much like The Soft Boys, Gang of Four, Pixies, etc, four ordinary joes walk on stage with a couple amps and guitars and just played great songs.  A tad lowkey at times but  they ripped it when needed.

Oh and to all those people who complain DC audiences are lame should have been at this one. From my vantage point most of the floor was either swaying or bopping along to the music, through the show..

You pretty much summed it up, kosmo. Friendly crowd too. Finally, a summer show to kick back and enjoy.
Hoya - I didn't think they were too awkward when speaking...seemed to be very down-to-earth and  ready to play.
From a far, and with my terrible vision, I thought the keyboardist looked like Vince Vaughn.

One time he looked at though he was about to burst into laughter.
What about the Rosebuds though? At least the keyboardist/vocalist -- very reactionary while playing. She kept looking at the lead singer before each note.

well, you and i have a different understanding of awkwardness then ... he said all these half-sentences and kind of trailed off all the time, but it was more a "winningly earnest" kind of awkward rather than "disturbingly morose" ... i heard people around me say he was probably voted "worst public speaker" in high school

Oh my god, we were COMPLETELY cracking up!  And even during slow songs where he's really just keeping a simple beat going, he's got virtual sex faces going on!!!

You must have been very far away....   ;)

It was GREAT for a summer show to be not sold out.  I'm getting pretty weary of every single 9:30 being sold out or really close these days.  Although I think Teenage Fanclub deserve a sellout far more than most (their album output is great, though I was less than dazzled by the show).

The Greenbelt Judge gives the Kaiser Chiefs a big OK.  Not a very compelling performance in comparasion to Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party or Nic Armstrong.  Clearily a product of much studio time, the limited vocabularies of both the singer and guitar player were obvious in a live seeting.  In fact my intial reaction was to how thin the group sounded and wondered if a second guitar was called for.  As is the case these days, it's a great drummer which takes bands to the next level for me.  The Chiefs drummer was  good a keeping time but wasn't really propelling them along, if anything he was dragging them down a bit.

Their set really hit a peak midway with "I Predict A Riot" and went rapidily down hill after that.  The slow stuff with offkey singing was just cringe worthy.  Lots of duff notes in general as the show went on. Maybe the singer's voice is shot from to much touring, but his range tonight was pretty limited.

The band gets style points for energerizing the audience, but the technical skills need some work  They'll to get some more material and chops in order to keep my interest past the first album.  Wont go out of my way to see them any time soon...

Good show on Friday.

The Cribs were entertaining if not musically compelling.  It kind of reminds me of ~1998 when there seemed to be dozens of "punk" bands popping up everywhere.  Only now there are noisy English garage rock acts.  Not that that's a bad thing...I'm just saying.

The Kaiser Chiefs were great.  They don't have a lot of material, but I thought they handled what they do have swimmingly.  High energy show and that impromptu little prom dance serenade was just precious, wasn't it?

Hats off to the DJ also.  That set between Cribs and Kaiser Chiefs was great fun -- Heat Wave, Beat It, I'm A Man, Jive Talking, Won't Get Fooled Again, Superstition (the last one holds a coveted spot on the GGW 100 Greatest Songs Ever Recorded list).

I loved the show tonight:  The Cribs were a great touring match with the Kaiser Chiefs...I loved the KC's set and it seemed like the crowd was pretty thrilled too...What was with all the drunk chicks?  Maybe those hyperskinny hipster women ought to eat a little sumptin before all those cocktails and shooters...it was a barfarama in the loo...not to mention other "displays" heh heh...

Made it out to the show due to a friend having a free ticket.  I hadn't heard anything from either band before but had a good time.  Cribs got a bit old after a while; Kaiser Chiefs saved themselves because the singer's such a character.
