This has been confirmed. It's up on the official NHL website.
You know...I LOVE hockey. But I've got to take a stand and let both players and owners know they've acted like idiots. I'm boycotting the entire season - no merch and no games. I'll watch on TV but that's it. Considering the cost of season tickets, it's not a trivial amount. I just hope more people let Bettman and Goodenow know their displeasure.
Speaking of Goodenow, I feel a public lynching in the air. It's one thing to have Jeremy Roenick blast you, but when a quiet player rep like Manny Legace rips you a new one...well...you know you screwed up.
-
oh.. I am sure the fans will come back and fill the arenas in droves now..
NOT..
-
Canuck, when they finally hit the ice fly an IM my way and we can hit a caps/flyers game.
-
I'm still gettin my season tickets. i'll boycott a lot of stuff, hockey is not one of those things.
-
Hockey has a different fanbase I believe. I can't wait to get to the arena again. I feel most hockey fans feel the same. Most saw this (lost season) or at least the threat for quite some time. So I was certainly bracing and prepared. Bottome line is, if you are a fan, this game beats the heck out of any yawner at Fedex, RFK, or the other sport at the phone booth anyday... so lets get started! Any rule changes to make it even better is just gravy.
-
I love hockey (http://www.ccchronicle.com/back/2001_spring/2001-04-09/images/ice_hockey.gif) . I always choose 2 regular guys, a fat guy and a skinny guy.
Seriously, I'm quite happy. Playoff hockey is what is right with pro sports.

Man, I'd love to! Hockey is the best sport to watch live - but I'm not giving any money to the league or the players for at least a year (I'll make an exception if the Habs score Crosby in the draft or if they make it to the playoffs).
It's probably a harsh thing to say in this area, but I hope the league contracts. 30 teams aren't viable, especially in the southern markets - including DC. I'd like to see the league go back to 24 teams. That would cull out some of the less talented players and then I think we'd less of the obstruction that slows down play.
Anyhow....Game On!!

GO LEAFS!!!!!!!!!!

I can't wait until this year's Detroit/Washington game at MCI so me and my fellow Red Wings compatriots can have the "Let's Go Red Wings" chant reverberate through the venue as we kick DC's sorry excuse for a team's ass 5-1.

I agree contraction is needed (although I'm not sure DC is a good choice), but I don't think that will cut down on obstruction. NJ is incredibly talented, and they trap like nobody's business. Unless we want absurdly strict obstruction holding rules called, it's an inevitability in the game. :(

My wife is from the Detroit area and she's a huge Wings fan. We always wear our Wings jerseys to MCI for the Det/Was games....and they're always a blowout. I read somewhere that Ted Leonsis blows a gasket at these games because there are more Wings fans than Caps fan :)
As for the obstruction argument, I think there's a difference between The Trap as a legal and viable game plan vs. obstruction penalties (hooking and interference). There are alot of lower rung players that can't keep up with the faster forwards - so they grab and hook from behind. The league has been lousy at calling the penalties, regardless of whatever noise they make about it. And, of course, the whistle gets thrown away during the playoffs. Getting rid of the less talented players isn't the only solution - but it's a step in the right direction.

didn't leonsis once try to limit the amount of tickets sold to people from pittsburgh for a playoff series? it's gotta be pittsburgh that infuriates him more.

seems like the only people Pittburgh should be infuriating are its fans!
-
in pittsburgh you could always get package deals for caps game. like tickets, bus ride with kegs, food for a set price. could do this for bungles/steelers games in cinci too
-

you can do that too with the Capitals. I never did it but the people who sat behind us would do this for Carolina games.
-
they should move the caps to baltimore, lower the ticket prices, and add some goons i mean heavy hitters to the team. can you imagine a game against philly in baltimore?
there was a story many moons ago in the dc city paper about how one guy only went to caps vs flyers games in order to engage in the extra curriculas

Of course he does. There's an audible "let's go Red Wings" chant throughout the entire building all game. It's a good 75% Wings fan some years.

but ted hears the "Sold Out Arena" chant in his head. I am sure he doesnt care. playoff games are different cause they can sell those out with Caps fans. so i see his point.
Same with Red Sox / Orioles games.
-
I am just happy that it looks the Blues wont be moving to Kansas City, the owner no longer wants anything to do with hockey after this mess
luckily the new CBA wont make Pronger an unrestricted free agent, the team is going to suck though

I believe there was an article 2 years ago after the WSH/DET game where he said it was painful to watch and called it "an appalling testimony to our fanbase" or something like that.

oh yeah, i'm sure you can do it for alot of teams. caps were just the one that i knew alot of pens fans went to. about 1/3 pens fans every game i've gone to here

yeah, they especially hate it when you show up for playoff games in your pens gear. i wonder why?
-
Two things...
1) Never wera a flyers jersey if you have floor seats for a concert in the civic arena. Them bastids is scary!
2) Shoot outs suck! There is nothing at all wrong with a great 0-0 hockey game. If they do have to do some sort of shoot out, there should be an entire revamping of the points system so that all games have equal number of points. I don't like where an OT or SO game gets a magical 3rd point tossed in. Every game should be worth the same number of total points. Make it 3 for a win, 0 for a loss, 2 for an OT/SO win, and 1 for an OT/SO loss. Give the teams an incentive to settle a game in regulation rather than just let is slide into OT to get the 'safe' point.
-
One more thing, any of you who do get season tickets, if you have nights you arent going send me an IM and I may be able to buy them off of you so they dont go to waste. Need a little advance notice since I am driving up from Richmond.

i was at the ot game in pittsburgh that jiri slegr won with a slapshot from the top of the circle against the caps in pittsburgh. right behind the goal, about 10 rows back. best hockey game i ever went to.
and rat bastard, what were you thinking? why not paint your face brown and orange and wear a hat that says 'america sucks'. jeez ;)

OK, that I agree with, although I can tolerate REGULAR SEASON shoot-outs. They do that to the playoffs, though, and I'll go ape.

the Pens dont make the playoffs anymore do they?

hear hear!! its like if after so many innings of a baseball game, they had a home run derby to see who wins!!!!
-
i have to admit, i'm a little more excited for hockey than i thought. will be solidified if the pens do sign some big free agents as is the rumor

yeah...they've been getting rid of bad contracts in anticipation of the new cba...which is here. rumor is they will sign 3 or 4 of the better players in hockey. kind of impossible to say what team will be good next year

its like if your boyfriend/girlfriend does something really stupid and then buys you flowers and dinner or CDs and baseball tickets or whatever. they're all nice and they'll do whatever just to make things better. thats the NHL right now, take advantage of a whole sports league sucking up to you. :)
-
well, sort of. the pens (and a few other teams too) have been preparing for the new cba for years, and if it works out, great. i guess i'm more excited to see what the team will look like than anything. and if they win, great

Fantasy hockey anyone?

I'm there!!! waiting for the leagues to start up.
I am usually in at least 1 or 2 different leagues. i like Yahoo's leagues the best, personally.
count me in once the draft is set and what not!
-
ive been doing some work with Joe Watson (former Flyer) and Paul MacKinnon (former Caps) for some Alumni games against a Russian team. Needless to say, for me at least, I have not had too much hockey withdrawal. It will be nice to have the NHL back, but I don't think I'll be attending more games for a long while.
GO KINGS!
