i am unashamed to say that i'll be there tonight. i'm looking forward to it, since i missed 'em last time around. though i'm sure the crowd will make me want to strangle someone.
-
sigh, yes I'll be there (for the 3rd night out of 5)

Why? Dare I ask the indie community what is wrong with Snow Patrol? Loved the album as soon as I heard it.
Hope theyre better than Doves who were really lackluster in my opinion. Did not meet my expectations.

way to take a thread off topic!!! :p

you could probably avoid my wrath by buying me beer... :)
-
I'm there...nice to know you guys will be strangling people tonight and not stabbing blondes... ;)
-
I am proud and excited to be going....Will be there for Athlete as well; it's a leap for me to get there in time for the opener!
-
I saw Snow Patrol when I was out in SF a few weeks back and they put on a very....average show. Don't get me wrong - I like their music but there really isn't anything special about the CD or their live show.
Having said that, I *will* be at the show tonight. And at the risk of going off topic (again) I'll concur that Doves were nothing special last night. I think Snow Patrol will be far more interesting...Or at least draw a more attractive crowd (eg. less of a sausage fest than the Doves show was).

While I'm very excited about the show, I can see what you mean. Each Snow Patrol show I've seen has been less interesting than the one before, which would put this one at pretty "meh"....Still, 'Final Straw' is one of my favorite albums of the last few years, so I always enjoy hearing the songs again. And Gary Lightbody smiles adorably while he sings, which I find extraordinarily endearing.
-
Yeah, why were the Doves so weak last night. Jaysus, I'm really pissed I wasted the $20 on them. Do those two dudes know how to play their guitars? It was a waste of time and money. I kept on phasing out then coming back and thinking I was watching the Flaming Lips while Mercury Rev was on. Overall, an trip to the 9:30 that wasn't worth it.
-
Drat, I was hoping for a "sausage fest" this evening. But it will probably be all shrieking spray-tanned Virginia girls taking pictures with their damn camera phones and stampeding over me in their rush to make it back to the metro/safety/virginia before midnight. What's a single Snow Patrol lovin' chick to do?
-

i think some people don't like snow patrol because -- as the brits say -- they're for bedwetters ... they play straightforward unchallenging (sometimes syrupy) britpop, and i guess some people don't like that
this isn't my opinion, just what i've gathered from all the haterz out there
oh, and that song "run", yeah ...

and there's the other reason.

I'll be there (2nd night out of 6 for me). Wish I could clone myself so I can see Andrew Bird at Iota as well
-
i'll be there too. it its uninspiring, perhaps i'll skip them in new orleans next week.
-
Did I read somewhere that one of the original members left the band recently?
-
the bass player...
-
Thanks. I haven't seen them live, but from the album it doesn't sound like that's a dealbreaker for the group.
-
novadancer and i will be there tonight. i saw them in NYC friday night, was a pretty good show, although not as good as the first time I saw them. im hoping they play post punk progression, and then ill be happy. :D that song was excellent on friday night!
Now if their shirts come down from $28 ill be amazed.

that's getting towards U2/rolling stones prices

i am unashamed to say i will be there as well. and the cloning thing is a good idea, because i'd like to see snowden at the black cat, too. ah well.
-

I was thinking about this last night after observing the British Sea Power $25 t's and the Doves $25 t's
I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that because of the exchange rate the bands are only seeing themselves as getting 10 or 12 pounds per t-shirt
wonder how much they are selling their merch for in England
-
Sorry if I seem to have crawled out from under a rock (maybe I did), but what happened to Embrace as they were on the bill earlier??

yeah i was thinking the same thing about last night's shirt as well. but as snow patrol was a more expensive ticket in NYC than here, maybe the shirt prices correlate. so by that theory, it means the SP shirts should be less tonight. would they actually price the shirts higher than the show itself?

I'll bet those bands are in the $50 range...that was the range for Madonna, Prince and the Moveon.org show....Yes, for t-shirts, not even hoodies.
-
BSP tees sell for GBP11 on their site. Roughly USD20.

well, let's just say that even boring shows are great now that DC9 stocks sparks. I recommend y'all try it before tonight's show. It adds an edge that's, well, fun.

hmmm...are you sure about the MoveOn show? I bought a long-sleeve T at one of those and it was nowhere near $50. There's no way I would have bought it.
I think Springsteen was selling $35 t-shirts last weekend though.

solid show - better than Doves - played mostly tracks from Final Straw w/ a few new ones - their music is pleasant and enjoyable but I don't know if it moves me that much - Gary Lightbody is still clearly stunned that he's a 'rock star' - between song banter was generally funny/goofy
snow patrol fans smoke significantly less than Go4 or Doves fans
the band also plays at a more manageable volume - no earplugs needed tonight!
serious outbreak of the Washington DC concert asshole near us - seemed like Snow Patrol were seriously interfering with their inane shouted conversations - dumbasses
-
I thought the show was great. They opened with my four favorite songs from Final Straw (you know, the rockers) one after the other, which had me jumping and thrilled. Literally, they played Bags' fave in this order -- #2, #1, #4 and #3. Man, can't beat that!!! And they ended with "Tiny Little Fractures," another great 'non-Coldplay' like song.....
May I reiterate -- this band is NO Coldplay (or Keane)!!! The last song before the encore was great; I've heard it at every show and I love it (I must spend time with 'Songs for Polar Bears' to find it). I was pretty pleasantly surprised because I wasn't expecting so much energy. They definitely rock much more live. Great examples, "Somewhere a Clock is Ticking" and "Same." They had good lights going, as well.
Brennser, I find Lightbody's goofy enjoyment really engaging. He seems to be having a good time, which is so important and not always there with hipster indie or Britpop bands....
I luckily had no assholes around me. There were two funny guys about five people ahead of me, though, who kept doing flippy waving of their hands and arms. Funny moves from a guy in a baseball hat...it was funny that they kept 'interfering' with folks around me trying to take camera phone photos.
-
not where we were. everyone smoked. and, we had the halfwit teenage girls who couldn't shut the fuck up the entire time after pushing their way thru dozens of people to work their way upfront. they bitched about me to each other the entire night because of my persistent glares and "sssh's". that was rather amusing as it highlighted ever so blatantly their maturity.
you know, it should be required that all patrons of the performing arts attend an etiquette class on proper behavior.
those issues removed, i think this show was superior to their show in the fall. solid sound, lots of fun had by all the band members, very accomodating crew that was giving away everything that wasn't absolutely needed by the band to the fans, etc.
i think i will now go see if there are tix for new orleans as i'll be on holiday there next week.

Would that have the been the 2 British Lads and there harem of 3 or 4 young females? One of the guys was really tall?? They got worse and worse as the show went on myself, and several around us had to move.
-
yup, that was them! right in front of the soundboard - constant talking - then one of the harem lost her wallet and started lighting matches near peoples clothing looking for it - thats when my friend finally snapped and got into it with them - idiots

I too thought the show was great and luckily was in a seemingly smokeless area. I thought that both Snow Patrol and Athlete seemed to enjoy being there, making for an enjoyable show.
-
Well my little spot of crowd, just in front of Bags (by the side of the guys doing the strange hand dance) turned out to be just fine.
I was quite impressed at how the crowd got into the show as a whole, the sing back bit was quite an eye opener.
I thought it was a good show, but they are the vanilla ice cream of bands. I feel more danger crossing a road, at a crosswalk.

I was wondering what the hell they were doing with the lighters/matches. I think there are some brit members of the board. Is this normal behavior for concerts in the UK? Drink drink drink and pay no attention what-so-ever to the band on stage? At one point the tall guy said something to the tune of "f--k snow patrol, they suck". WHY THE HELL WERE YOU THERE THEN!?!?
-
yeah, they are a safe band......
but i still had a great time, i was dreading the crowd before the show started (lots of girlies with cell phones to my right, cheesy couple making out to my left) but it was actually a very good crowd (in my area at least).
thanks for the tics fico.......we owe you a beer
-
snow patrol was good.
but jesus, i've never seen the 930 club so quiet in my life. the crowd looked like a bunch of zombies. maybe it's just the music, not something you can dance to, i guess.
i'm definitely looking forward to the faint!
-
Couple of things I'd like to point out...they are not selling t-shirts at top $$s cos' they would otherwise loose on the exchange rate..let me put it this way..my band just made t-shirts and we are turning a very good profit selling them for $10. And we only made 40!!! if they make...oh 500-1000 shirts, you can bet your bollocks to the barn dance that of the $28 they are making a profit of AT LEAST $25.50
Also, its not the opera...stop whining so fookin much about the people who attend shows and how they act...

hmmm have to disagree not only is chattering away disrespectful to those around you it's also to the band. it's quite apparent people have become more rude in general. whether it's talking during shows, movies, etc. prime example.... the guy sitting next to kosmette who most of the first act of Spamalot until he got shushed, saying "this was in the movie" or "this wasn't in the movie". well dud we've seen the movie therefore don't need a running commentary.
people now a days can't seem to differentiate between going to a kegger, sports bar, trend nightspot and a show at the 9:30 club, etc where people are paying good money to see a group and not to hear inane yack or experience rude behavior around them. a course in manners is called for...
-

i know its not the 'fookin' opera - but (echoing kosmo) its still rude to those around you and the band

Amen to that...And Ive always wondered why everyone gets so riled up when people wear baseball hats. Thats something I dont understand.
Well Im here I guess...Really enjoyed the show. Much preferred this over the Doves. I think it was the strength of the songs that put them over. Lead singer had a great voice, though he was bordering on talking too much if anything. I was pleasantly surprised after that pivotal moment before the singer opens his mouth which can normally tell me in an instant what kind of show its going to be. Impressed...
What was the last song before the encore? Was one of the stronger songs of the set I thought.
Overall, I give it an 8. Theyre definitely of the Coldplay genre (which is not a cut at all), but they do have a bit more rock in their set than your typical "bed-wetting" british act. Saying that, after Doves and Snow Patrol, Im definitely ready to see some real rock.
Killers and Oasis in June oughta do it.

Fico, they are making a nice profit, of course. But some things people don't consider in merch sales:
- shipping costs. Just getting a big shipment of shirts to the original destination costs a pretty penny.
- the venue takes a 20% cut on merch and 10% on CD's. For every $28.00 t-shirt they sell, the 9:30 takes $5.60. This is true of virtually every venue (pecentages may change on different levels, but this is a rule of thumb.)
- touring bands have to pay an on-the-road merch person.
Like I said, they are making a tidy profit, I am sure. Hell, some bands survive on merch sales alone. But the profit is not near $25.50.
-
sorry to disappoint ya, but the real rock has already happened... in came in the form of Gang of Four.
-
they are not selling t-shirts at top $$s cos' they would otherwise loose on the exchange rate
how do you know?
I don't care how much Cartel t-shirts cost - the shirts for these brit bands are most likely bought and paid for in either sterling or euro
if they, to use the BSP example are selling em for 11 pounds in the UK and they cost 2 pounds they're making 9 on every shirt
when they come over to the states they still want to make 9 pounds on every t-shirt - guess what 9 pounds is $18 bucks? - throw in the 9.30 cut and you get to $25 fairly quickly

Good show. Solid tunes and good energy from Snow Patrol. I liked the new songs they played, it sounds like they??ve been working on them for a while. Nice lights. The last song before the encore absolutely rocked. Didn??t know they had it in them. And mockery be damned, I like Run. It??s straight OC-style, but someone??s got to do it.
I couldn??t get into Athlete at all. They played fine, and I liked their honest songs and crowd banter, but if you think Snow Patrol is vanilla you need an even blander flavor of ice cream to describe Athlete. They had exactly 45 seconds of vitality, when they impressively pulled out the melodica and the theremin. The rest of the time, they were playing straight out of ??rhythm section for dummies, volume 1.?
More moms and dads than I??ve seen at the club in a while. The crowd around me wasn??t too bad. Above average yapping perhaps. I want to say that the audience is more likely to yap when they are waiting for a band??s hit singles but it seemed pretty constant.
And apparently I look like one of the DJs, according to a couple of girls who walked past me. That??s gotta be worth something for my club cred.

You are correct, it's not the opera. But I don't think anyone is asking for complete silence. It seems clear that you were not around this group of people. You litteraly could not hear the music they were screaming so loud to each other trying to have a conversation. The would leave 2 or 3 at a time then force their way back to their original position with no regard to those around them, only to scream to each other again. They weren't fans of the band, so I ask again, why are they there? Go to the bar downstairs if you just wanna drink and have fun with your friends.
-
hear, hear....
....Fico was nowhere near these folks, although I will say that if he had managed to be near these people while playing bass for Cartel backstage at the Cat simultaneously, then I would be truly impressed!

I wasn't at the show...but I go to most of the shows the regulars here go and I find that its just the way shows are..aside from Sigur Ros..is it worse some times than others..but its the way it is...I'll prolly get bashed for saying this but sometimes you guys act like the angry black guy who is just waiting for the white person to look his way or say something he doesn't like to get his hissyfit done...I wear baseball caps, i've taken pictures with cameraphones, I've turned to the person next to me to comment..I don't see how that takes away from the concert experience...and here is something you may not know..when bands are onstage 95% you don't get to see the crowd cos it's dark as hell...and while you are playing you don't really hear the crowd..and when you are using in-ear-monitors (as most bands nowaday do) you don't hear anything from the crowd pretty much...
And those cuts Arlette claims 9:30 claims gets from band merch sounds awfully suspicious to me...I don't believe it to be true at all...it certainly isn't the case of other clubs I've played...

my friend played 930 a year ago or so and his band got in a dispute with the club about merch cuts and who could sell the merch ... i dont remember all the details, but i think the club had a designated guy to staph the merch booth and they couldn't use their usual merch guy and they took a pretty hefty cut
it was a while ago though, i could be wrong on the details of it all ...
-
Yup it was pretty much a smoke-fest over where I was, near the left-side bar on the floor. No need to smoke my own cigs thats fer sure. SP were pretty good, but definitely not the future of rock'n'roll. I agree with the posting that a genuinely great rock band made an appearance just last Friday night (Gang of Four). But Gof4 had their moment (and squandered it in about 1985) and who knows if they'll come up with anything good and new. As for SP, yeah the album is good, and there are some catchy songs, but the songs do all sound alike for the most part, and the singer's voice, while distinctive, stays basically in one narrow range, which of course makes all the songs sound alike. Maybe in future years they'll come up with some music really worth latching on to, but for now, they are this year's Travis.

It's true. 80/20 merch, 90/10 music. Artist/Venue percentage split. That's the way it's written in the contracts. I used to manage a club and we'd at least let the band use their own merch person to sell their stuff. 9:30 mandates that their own staff do it. They do a count in, have inventory sheets, do a count out with the band merch person, etc. It's a big sum of money, they take it seriously. Lots of clubs this size do.
-
loads of generalizations are made about baseball hat wearers, etc. making the odd comment to a friend or using a cameraphone in moderation is fine and something plenty of people do during a show. however, it's the ones who are acting like they are a some trendy nightspot with loud house music blaring or constantly using the cellphonecamera who are ones being rude. at the secret machine show at the black cat some guy had his phone up in the air for the entire set which distracted me from otherwise enjoying the show. it's great if one needs a pictorial souvenir of three guys obscured by the stage lights, but isn't one enough?
moderation, common sense, manners seem to be forgein concepts to some folks, who ruin it for all.
-
Always something of a fine line on the crowd bit. It's like porn, you know it when you see it. I don't think anyone expects complete reverent silence all the time, the spontaneity of the crowd can be half the fun.
It's one thing to make a comment to your friend during a song and another to carry on a complete and unrelated conversation as if that were the radio you were listening to. I think the rudeness comes from people wanting to have it both ways. If you want to talk with a friend or are just there for some background music, that's cool, go to the back or downstairs. If you want to enjoy the music, get in the crowd and enjoy the music. Just don't spend half the song screaming to your friend, "this is such an awesome song!!!"

The Club would make more money if they got a merch person with a little more hustle. The guy who usually staffs the booth moves slower than my grandmother. On more than one occasion I've opted to leave rather than wait for him.

Had this happen when I saw Paul McCartney... It only got better, when the drunk on half a beer women started having a conversation during "Vanilla Sky" about how they rented the movie to watch during some cookie baking party. The truly defining moment for this group was the "what flag is that?" comment when Paul brought out the District of Columbia flag during the encores. Dim people...

When I was over in London back in the mid-90's, I walked past this club that was packed with guys wearing baseball caps. Curiosity got to me so I asked what was going on - the bouncer said some yank band and was in town and it looks like 400 Americans came out to see them. It was Blues Traveler, and not one Brit who didn't work there was in the place.
-
a bunch of people asked about the song during the encore: its the b-side to chocolate (or maybe run).. post punk progression. each time i hear that song it gets better. i did learn on the b-side its MUCH slower. so now i need to find myself a live copy of that track :)
liked the show overall. gary seemed more comfortable on stage here than he did in new york. talked a bit more, joked around. they had a longer set in new york, with playing a sampling off the earlier albums and the new stuff.
the show was very enjoyable minus the people who insisted on talking so loud throughout the show. i was towards the front, on the right side directly in front of the bar (near the water). some girls near me thought it'd be great to talk throughout the entire show, and not quietly either. i know some guy asked her if she could either go to the back to talk or just be quiet, to which her response was "fuck you or fuck off".. so mature :)
-
funny, i found the show to be boring and predictable. i was standing near the merch table, tho', so i may have missed stuff, being so far back.
let's just say i'm glad i had my sparks before the show.

Have you been to many 9:30 Club shows? This was an energetic crowd -- nearly everyone around me was dancing or singing -- you must have been in some designated quiet section. Folks upstairs along the bar were even dancing. That doesn't happen much at all...

PS, I found Athlete pretty awful as well. They have the uncanny ability to put in one or two things into every song to really turn me off, be it a nursery-rhymey keyboard affect or an odd chorus (not odd as in interesting, odd as in "that sounds like a song by Mr. Greenjeans").

thanks for letting us little people know what its like on stage Mr Rock Star!
you continue to completely miss the point on this thread - no-one has the slightest problem with the things you are describing below....its when folks take it to extremes that its a problem
'll prolly get bashed for saying this but sometimes you guys act like the angry black guy who is just waiting for the white person to look his way or say something he doesn't like to get his hissyfit done...I wear baseball caps, i've taken pictures with cameraphones, I've turned to the person next to me to comment..I don't see how that takes away from the concert experience...and here is something you may not know..when bands are onstage 95% you don't get to see the crowd cos it's dark as hell...and while you are playing you don't really hear the crowd..and when you are using in-ear-monitors (as most bands nowaday do) you don't hear anything from the crowd pretty much...

That's what I'm talkin' about Fico -- the folks who watch the ENTIRE show through their camera phones or digital cameras. Hello, there's a band there, why don't you watch them?!
Same with talking. I make comments to my friends too (just ask Markie...), but there are those who hold full-on, full-volume conversations in the middle of the headliners set. Go to the f'ing Back Bar or lounge area in the back...

Yeah, and when the band is playing I tell you to shut up! But as no one can understand me, you just nod your head and then keep talking. I bet you thought I said something really deep, or cool?

But it's not me talking, it's my friend! Though you are on the spot as to my response to you -- a nod, as if I heard you, and assumption you either said something deep and cool or it was a beer-induced muttering...
I am very reverent during shows, I'll have you know.
-edit-
I've been thinking. I'm not always so reverent during openers. I should be better. I'll try to progress as a person and a concert-goer...
-
I am not saying all the things mentioned here don't happen..they do, and to a degree they take away from the experience...to me its just weird that going to the same shows I don't have those same complaints on such numerous occasions..some people at the floor will complain about jocks in baseball caps in the balcony..they're tools..yet you must leave and let live..when I get annoyed I move from my space..yet it seems the modus operandi is to claim your ground, get aggravated and bitch about it here the next day...it's unfortunate but some battles are not worth fighting...

or the couples who take 5 self-portraits of themselves with the flash on (blinding the entire crowd behind them each time), checking to see if the last shot came out well, then repeating over and over
love them!

but complaining about it is half the fun :p

Have you been to many 9:30 Club shows? This was an energetic crowd -- nearly everyone around me was dancing or singing -- you must have been in some designated quiet section. Folks upstairs along the bar were even dancing. That doesn't happen much at all... [/b]
i've probably seen 15 shows at the 930 club in the last year. i always stand downstairs, at the back, to the left, near the bar. so, i know it's not going to be as lively as up front, but at least i get the same perspective every time. this was by far the quietest crowd i've ever seen.

Drat, I was hoping for a "sausage fest" this evening. But it will probably be all shrieking spray-tanned Virginia girls taking pictures with their damn camera phones and stampeding over me in their rush to make it back to the metro/safety/virginia before midnight. What's a single Snow Patrol lovin' chick to do?
sounds like a fun crowd :D

You tried to get it on with the girl in the black on whom you clearly had a giant crush. It was obvious that you were trying to impress her by screaming at the band, "YOU CRAZY, MOTHER F*CKER!" You took off when your guy friend made a move on your crush. (Which turned out to be a good move, because BOY did they go at it.) My roommate and I figured you might be slitting your wrists in the bathroom. Were you? If not, you're probably looking for a rebound, huh?
I'm the girl who melted when you turned to me and said, "OH NO HE DI'INT!"

We met up at the credit card bar and you asked if you could put your beers on my tab. You were wearing a white shirt and as you left you pinched my butt. Don't I get to pinch back?
