USA Live Earth Is Ready
Updated 09:01 PDT Tue, Apr 10 2007
Washington D.C. is going to miss out on one heck of a concert. The lineup for USA Live Earth was announced April 10 for Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., and the lineup includes The Police, Roger Waters and Dave Matthews Band.
"Capping Live Earth with a blockbuster show like this will ensure we meet our challenge of building a mass audience to combat global warming," executive producer Kevin Wall said. "Live Earth will be a monumental event both in terms of entertainment and in turning the tide against global warming." The Live Earth concerts are expected to take place on every continent (yes, even Antarctica) on 7/7/07. London's lineup includes Madonna, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Genesis, Foo Fighters and Beastie Boys.
The U.S. show was originally planned for the Capitol Steps of Washington D.C. but ran into a political quagmire when opponents of carbon dioxide emission control kept the politically charged event from taking place.
Also on the U.S. lineup are Kanye West, John Mayer, Fall Out Boy, Alicia Keys, Bon Jovi, AFI, Akon, Kelly Clarkson, KT Tunstall, Ludacris, Melissa Etheridge, Rihanna, and The Smashing Pumpkins. The concerts will begin in Sydney and continue across all seven continents, concluding with the U.S. show.
Tickets go on sale April 16 at 10 a.m. EDT.
"We hope the energy created by Live Earth will jumpstart a massive public education effort," Live Earth Co-Chair Vice President Al Gore said.

sweet. now i can go to the tortoise show and not have to deal with extra traffic the mass of people attending that crapfest.

Roger Waters is the only set I would be interested in seeing.
-
Live on stage in London will be:
BEASTIE BOYS
BLACK EYED PEAS
BLOC PARTY
CORINNE BAILEY RAE
DAMIEN RICE
DAVID GRAY
DURAN DURAN
FOO FIGHTERS
GENESIS
JAMES BLUNT
JOHN LEGEND
KEANE
MADONNA
PAOLO NUTINI
RAZORLIGHT
RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS
SNOW PATROL

The mention of Dave Matthews makes me want to throw up all over myself. Will this "band" PLEASE GO AWAY?
thank you.
-
i'd be interested in seeing the London concert, but there is no way i'm sitting through a whole day of crap just to hear the Police, Roger Waters and the Pumpkins (yes, i know two of the three are playing VFest, but i might not be in town for it).

most of the rest of those london bands arent that horrible to sit through, really. better than the US show! and i suppose if the london airfare/hotel and all that is not an issue then you're being sorta picky!

sonick: police, pumpkins & waters will be playing here in the US. so i was saying that the US show is lackluster while the UK show looks quite decent. maybe i wasn't clear?
-
wow, I'd much rather see the U.S. show than the U.K. show. That might be the first and only time I ever say that.
Regardless of the rest of the day, I don't think I'll ever get the chance to see Roger Waters and the Smashing Pumpkins on the same stage. Not to mention the Police.
-
Wouldnt flying over to London defeat the purpose of "Earth Day"?
-
I'd definitely want to see the London show.
Regardless, F*CK JAMES INHOFE AND HIS DAMN SELF taking this show away from DC.
Oh, that's right, it's all a crazy hoax to get more people to watch The Weather Channel.

My thinking exactly. And this is coming from someone who already has 8th row Center stage seats to see the Police 2 weeks after that show. I'm 70%-30% on going. If it's in the $150 or < range, I'm up in there . . . .

Was it just me or did anyone else think that the concert was going to be free?

I thought the same thing. Now they don't say how much it is and you have to buy through Live Nation or Ticketmaster. I think the whole thing is kind of funny.

Ditto. But as soon as I heard D.C. wasn't getting the show, I figured capitalism was finnin' to rear its homely head. Whatever . . . . I'm never gonna get to see Pink Floyd, and after having to pass on it last year cause of Virgin Festival, Roger's the closest thing. I'm comfortable with that.

I would just go to Philly in June for that. I enjoyed the Roger Waters show I saw a few years ago so much that I'm thinking of hitting up the Wachovia Center show and getting a full set.

Roger Waters would've made for a nice opener for tortoise. :)

I was thinking about doing the same for Roger at MSG in late May. Never seen a show at the Garden. Not sure if I wanna hold out for the Stones or U2 (which I've planning/meaning to do for about 4-5 years now) to come back out on the road to do it. Decisions, decisions . . . .
-
after seeing waters in 99/00 a few times, i don't think i'd go to these recent tours considering you're going to get mostly the same stuff at a much higher price tag.

From the Post
"Tickets to the Giants Stadium concert will go on sale Monday. Pricing hasn't been set, but Wall estimated that they'd "average around $100 or $125." Had Live Earth been staged on the Mall or at the Capitol, admission would have been free, he said. Ticket revenue will help cover the facility fee at the Meadowlands sports complex."

thats sad that they're charging people money for this show.

why?
-
maybe i was spoiled when i went to live 8 in philly a few years ago, which was free. do you think the other live earth shows are going to be charging people?
i believe that these types of shows should be free to the public.
-
i wouldn't mind paying $20-30 to cover facility fees, but $100+ is just gouging. there is no way it costs that much to operate the facility for one day. where is this extra money going? $100 x 100000 people (at least*) = $10,000,000.
the UK show will not be free either: ALL TICKETS FOR LONDON WILL BE PRICED AT £55 EACH (http://media.livenation.co.uk/liveearth/) (about $110 USD)
* football capacity is 80k in the stands, i'm sure they'll fit at least 20k on the field.
EDIT: furthermore, the article mentioned "A lot of cities were competing to get this show, and the state of New Jersey and the city of New York opened up their arms and said to come here." = sponsorship, tax breaks, incentives, etc...
-
I thought I'd hear more complaints about the fact these aren't likely to be real sets, you're looking at 5-6 songs max for big names and perhaps 15-20 minute medley's from others.
As far as the pricing, if the majority of the proceeds aren't going toward some type of environmental related charity/fund, this is indeed a hoax and we shouldn't collaborate...though on the surface the cause is just.

I'll bet 20% of those seats are behind the stage and not sold. And they're not going to cram 20,000 onto the field. It's not the 9:30 Club.

They gotta boost the price to cover costs to keep Jimmy Hoffa's body in tact underneath all that turf.
-
I agree. You're taking out the whole populist/activist slant if you're charging a large admission fee.

$350 for a primo seat???? I'm cool on that . . . My interest in going (which aside of Roger Waters & 3 - 5 other acts wasn't all that high to begin with) has suddenly just decreased threefold . . . BOLLOCKS!!!!!!!!!!

That's exactly where it's going.
-
so aren't all these bands going to be playing like a 20 minute set at the most? i think i'll pass.
-
perhaps its going to Roger Waters and Billy Corgan.
lets not jump to conclusions that its the promoters fault alone.
perhaps these bands didnt want to play for free. Al Gore doesnt have the same pull as Geldof!
and lets not forget that Giants Stadium is a HORRIBLE place to see a concert!

You're paying for the privilege of being preached at for a few hours by a bunch of self righteous celebrities who once read the synopsis of a book.

Isn't it worth $350 to be within a hundred feet of Leo?
