just lissen "Running With the Devil" is all: there is desperation, a sense of rock and roll predestination, a sense of fate, that is overpowering. They needed abandonement like only a few Cali bands that came before (it makes sense that the Minutemen covered 'em). It's like someone who drinks too much: if they don't get to a point where they mistrust their own balance, they haven't gone far enough. And the first two Halen records are amazing examples of a band whose balance was so great that they could push themselves over the edge and have a blast recovering. Not that anyone said Halen wasn't great. I'm not saying, I'm just saying.
and oh yeah, their singer did a great imitation of a cheetah in heat getting pounded from behind. And that's worth something.... even if he got more pussy than he deserved. Where's my blog?

he deserved all the pussy he got!

Yuck!!! That guy turned me off so bad it made it difficult for me to like the band at all! It was always best for me to listen and not watch. Though never my type of music, they were good in their early days. No denying that. I just never liked Metal at all though VH were probably the least offensive to my ears and could even enjoy a song or two in the right mood.

I would love to have all their albums on CD...they'd make great coffee cup coasters.

I agree on the song "Running With the Devil" though. Even when I heard that song for the first time as a kid, and had no idea what they were talking about, all that stuff that mrpee was talking about came through.
Sometimes it's good to let down one's barriers of rarefied effete indie hipsterism and let such visceralities come through...

Hip or not, I don't know, and I couldn't give a shit. I just know that I don't like them. Period. It's not a hipster thing with me. It's a just not liking Metal thing and being totally repulsed by their ass up front. Nothing personal. That's just how I feel. My opinion. I did like their guitars, once I got past the genre and, as I said before, was in the right mood.

I'm with mrpee. Those early Van Halen albums are great. And Diamond Dave was the man.

I can listen to that song over and over again.

Plus don't forget they ran a baby grand piano into Eddie's Marshall stack for "And The Cradle Will Rock" :) That was way cool at the time!

Yeah, they didn't bring anything new to the musical table. Are they the inheretors of The Led Zeppelin mantle?

The first album is sick. No doubt about it. Have run through that bad boy on vinyl and cassette back in the day.
I am of the rare breed that actually likes VH with David and VH with Sammy. A travesty, I know. While the first album is the best, I would rate Sammy's first three ahead of most of the DLR albums.
1. Van Halen
2. 1984
3. 5150
4. F.U.C.K.
5. OU812
6. Van Halen II
7. Women and Children First
8. Fair Warning
9. Diver Down
The rest of the albums don't exists to me.

Yeah, maybe they didn't add anything new but putting my own taste aside, I have to admit that they were, in the beginning, damn good at what they did. You are probably right about the Led Zepplin comparison. I think they just did it slicker and more in your face and over the top. I can fully understand why their fans loved them but they just didn't appeal to my tastes. Got to give credit where credit is due.

I wouldn't put VH and Led Zep in the same category...
