wow, will we see them at DC9 in a couple years?
-
Totally not surprised at this. But how long can they actually play? When I saw them in January at the RnR Hotel, they played every song off their debut, then one b-side and a new one. Can they really get away with 45 minutes of material at the 9:30 Club?
-
Another band whose appeal completely baffles me.
Ahh well.
-
i'm sure you secretly bought tickets this morning :) jk

Although they don't appeal to me, their appeal to many others doesn't baffle me in the slightest.

They sucked at the RnR hotel show.
-
Wow, two hours and they sell out? I was gonna get a ticket... Guess not now.
-
FUCKING SHIT!
I didnt even get the email this morning with the soft sales.
Ack!!!!!!!
-
That's because soft sale emails come on wednesday night.

I should've made myself clearer earlier; it's not the fact that people like them that baffles me; it's more the ridiculous critical acclaim.
They sound like just another dime-a-dozen indie-pop band to me.

All the exposure on 90210 and at NFL stadiums has really paid off!

me three. they play decent, pleasant pop; not genre-revolutionizing, future-defining masterwork critics seem to laud them for.
i gave their album 3 spins and decided it wasn't worth the hard disk space.

Really? I thought they played well, and the venue suited them alright. But that's just me. :p

and whats worse is their success will spawn another dime-a-dozen imitators trying to "blend" world beats, etc into their sound.

Either way I didnt get the email. Those shits are crazy inconsistent. It took them awhile to grow on me, I was obsessed, I heard they sucked live, but Id still go see them.

Again, I think this is just another sign of what a dismal year it's been for music...
They're fine. Fun indie pop...nothing innovative. I doubt they'll play very long. Ting Tings did a 45 minute set, and it was fine. It'll be good to have a short show on a monday night.

So not true!!!!!!!
It seems that every year, the critics unanimously have to praise someone who isn't worthy of it. Last year, it was James Murphy and this year, it's this band.
Then again, you may just be trying to bait me into giving my typical response to the "this year's music sucked" comment. If that's the case, it worked. Ahh shit.

Why's it matter what critics say? Their music is enjoyable and that's that.
-
If it wasn't for the critics, this show wouldn't have sold out in two hours.
-
I probably listened to more new music so far this year than I have in any other year of my life.
Perhaps it's just me being more open-minded and thus sampling more that I'm destined to not like anyway, but I do have to agree, this year in music has been pretty dismal.
There's been nothing that will make my top 20 for this decade, so nothing "great" this year. There's been a decent amount of "good" albums this year, but less so than in years when I looked a lot less to find them. And there's been a whole lot more crap than ever this year, probably simply because I've listened to more stuff period.

Or, perhaps, them being on MTV for an entire week. Or their song being in Step Brothers opening credits... or the radio airplay... or being played at every store in any mall....
Probably still the critics though...

I agree, I'd take all of last years records over this years.

I don't watch MTV. Nor have I seen Stepbrothers. Nor do I regularly go to malls. Nor do I listen to the radio. I do, however, know that they've been fluffed in every music publication both in the US and Europe except for maybe The Wire and XXL and The Source. And if you don't think that affects ticket sales, you're kidding yourself.

I heard the new Coldplay album is phenomenal but I didn't go see them live. Yeah, I think it peaks peoples interests because of the hype but I don't think the only reason this show sold out is because of the critics. And just because your only source of knowing about them is critics doesn't mean that it's the only reason they sold out a show. Sadly, I do watch MTV and every week they have a new/different artist that is highlighted every week. I read online that they think it's better than playing music videos because it gives a band at least 11 hours of coverage over the week.
But feh, just saying. Im still bummed the show's sold out.
-
who in the hell has enough time to make a "top 100 of the decade list"..and who's going to care to read it except maybe a few nerds on here? you should get out more.
-
I'm pretty sure he was kidding.
-
im not. he's mentioned this list before i think..
-
from the hold steady thread:
"It's currently #27 on my decade list. Their other albums don't even come close to the top 100 cutoff."
-
I was about to buy tickets, but the show is on my fiancee's birthday. She'd kill me. Hopefully they play the NorVa or National so my brother can go see them.
You guys are crazy if you don't think there are any good records out this year. I think it's one of the better years of the decade:
Cat Power - Jukebox
Spiritualized - Songs in A&E
TV on the Radio - Dear Science
Gutter Twins - Saturnalia
Kings of Leon - Only By The Night
The Black Keys - Attack and Release
The Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely

Of those, I'd take Spiritualized and maybe Gutter Twins, but it didn't seem to have staying power after the first two weeks of listens.
Seriously, I am still waiting for something great to come out this year...

Suck me sideways I totally forgot The Raconteurs and Black Keys albums.
It wasn't the best outing by the Keys, still great. Racotneurs on the other hand is PHENOMENAL. I wore it out forever when it came out and I saw them at the club. I listened to it again a few days ago. Still amazing.
-
I'd also just take Spiritualized from that list, honestly.
My top 10 in no particular order except for the first two:
Carla Bozulich's Evangelista - Hello Voyager
Lindstrom - Where You Go I Go Too
Magnetic Fields - Distortion
Matmos - Supreme Balloon
James Blackshaw - Litany of Echoes
Brightblack Morning Light - Motion to Rejoin
Carlos Giffoni - Eternal Noise
Grails - Take Refuge in Clean Living
Fuck Buttons - Street Horrrsing
Fern Knight - Fern Knight

Just a heads up, I tried again, and was able to score a ticket. Thats weird. Did they not have all tickets for sale this morning? Good luck.
-
you dork, you bought a ticket for the 2nd show :p

The Walkmen, duh.
Also, as mentioned in another thread, I would totally create a best-of-decade list. I don't have one now, but gimme another year's worth of music, a six-pack o' beer and two hours to kill, I would make one...
...CAUSE I AM A NERD. :D
-
It would take me a hell of a lot longer than two hours to make a list like that.
I spent a couple weeks (maybe a couple hours per day) going through everything I liked in '07 in order to make a top 25.

ha... didnt even check the date when i bought it.... when did they announce a second show? Thats cool, im still a little upset about missing them at RNRH this year due to someone being sick and needing care, and then missing them at Bonnaroo due to being too tired after driving all night and not sleeping, so ill take whichever date i can get.
-
It just appeared magically on tickets.com.
Very sneaky.
Yet, the club does do this with almost every band that sells out during soft sale.
-
Good thing they had a day off before their next NY date.
-
Badass. Just snagged some tickets, now I CAN go to RAW and see Vampire Weekend.
What a strange pair of days.
-
The second night of Vampire Weekend (12/2) is indeed on sale now through Tickets.com.
-
why isnt anyone talking about Glasvegas at rock n roll hotel?
that record kicks ass. looks like they'll have the number one record in the uk in a few days.
-
glasvegas is awful.
-
I couldn't go on Monday, but the Tuesday show will fit my schedule perfectly. VERY excited.
-
Enjoyed them at bonnaroo, but it's a short set unless they've written a lot of material in the last few months. Probably could have played 2 shows a night and made 2x the cash.
-
Vampire Weekend didnt do the whole hour and fifteen minute set that was on the Bonnaroo schedule?
-

Campus is so close to the opening, I feel like that song is closer to the end.
Fave song btw.
