Coachella Promoters Launching NYC-Area Fest
January 15, 2008, 1:40 PM ET
Ray Waddell, Nashville
Sources say Coachella producers AEG Live/Goldenvoice will stage a summer festival with major headliners at Liberty State Park, just across the Hudson River from lower Manhattan. The event will not carry the Coachella brand.
Liberty State Park has hosted a handful of concerts in recent years, most notably a Radiohead show shortly before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The new event gives AEG/Goldenvoice a major summer presence in the area, where it will compete with the new Vineland festival. That event, promoted by C3 Presents and Melvin Benn's Festival Republic, will be held Aug. 8-10 at a 500-acre, privately-owned farm in Vineland, N.J., about 40 minutes outside of Philadelphia.
Meanwhile, an announcement is expected in the coming days revealing the lineup for this year's Coachella festival, to be held April 25-27 in Indio, Calif.

coolness. so we get this, vineland, and virgin fest. might be starting to get a tad crowded, no?
i hope they're not all on the same weekend.
-
sicknasty
-
that would be a dream come true.
:)
-
East coast festivals have a pitiful history.
-
What ever happened to the east coast version of All Tomorrows Parties?
-
Wasn't there also rumored to be an East Coast Reading Festival a few years back, curated by Stephen Malkmus?

Let us not forget the debacle that was the northeast bonnaroo.
-
I thought the ATP festival was the one to be curated by Malkmus...
Personally, I'd like to see a ATP or London Meltdown style festival.... Primarily indoor venues with lots of "faggy" indie bands to keep the meatheads away

I hope they are on the same weekend. In fact, I hope they're all in the same park, on the same stage, at exactly the same time. That would be awesome.
-
they can all be on different weekends, i just hope they all have essential the same lineups so people can bitch about the lack of variety between them.
lets recap
Vfest
Coachella East
Reading USA
Bonnarroo
Radiohead takes a dump festival
plus the possibility of Led Zep, AC/DC, Pearl Jam on tour
-
Radiohead and Jack Johnson are headlining this.
-
OH I WOULD NOT DREAM OF IT.

Is Pitchfork not having a festival in Chicago this year since it's having an ATP thing?
-
I went to the first Siren Fest. It sure does get crowded there. Do you think they'll still have it since Coney Island was sold?

probably not, but the bands they book for siren fest are usually the types of bands that would comprise the side stage acts of these festivals. which makes me wonder how much they can (SHOULD) charge for an upcoming new york festival. because, when it all boils down, we are all just a bunch of poor new yorkers...

Coachella Going East

C3 Presents and Festival Republic's Vineland won't be the only new East Coast festival this summer, according to sources who say Coachella producers AEG/Goldenvoice are staging one of their own - scheduled for the same weekend as Vineland.
The new festival is tentatively scheduled for August 8-10 at the Liberty State Park in Jersey City, N.J., "according to people briefed on the plans," the New York Times reported. Also not too far away will be the I.M.P.-promoted V Fest in Baltimore, also tentatively scheduled for that same weekend, according to Seth Hurwitz.
Rumor has it that 80-100 bands are expected to participate, with Radiohead and Jack Johnson as possible headliners.
The Vineland Music Festival will debut in Vineland, N.J., about halfway between Philadelphia and Atlantic City, N.J.
Representatives for AEG and Paul Tollett, the co-creator of Coachella, both referred phone calls to their publicist, Mitch Schneider Organization. Asked to confirm the festival's existence, MSO's Marcee Rondan told Pollstar January 15th, "I have no information to report."
A lineup hasn't been announced for the rumored festival or Vineland Music Festival. An official announcement regarding the East Coast version of Coachella is expected early next week, according to the Newark Star-Ledger.
This year's Coachella festival will be held April 25-27 at the Empire Polo Field in Indio, Calif. General admission tickets will go on sale through Ticketmaster retail centers, online or charge by phone.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the lineup for the three-day festival is expected to be announced next week and a surprising veteran act or two - but not David Bowie - might top the list.

So, there are three east coast festivals this summer -- and they are all scheduled for the same weekend?
Fuckin' genius....
-
absolutely ridiculous.
vineland was announced as August 8-10, so i guess that's the big weekend.
humid east coast august heat = awesomeness.
-
Oh boy...clusterfuck city!!!!!!!!!! :D
-
isn't Lolla the same weekend as well??
-
lolla is august 1-3
-
so a musical festival appears to be a huge headliner slumming it for a cozy paycheck, plus whatever other bands happen to be destroying the ozone layer in their motorcoaches at the time.. that said if vfest were to provide a cost effective way to see Led Zep, i'd strongly consider it...

you got me wondering: what if these three festivals book the same headliners, so for example radiohead headlines vfest one night and "coachella east" the next? in essence, the festivals would lose their identities and become the three regional manifestations of "east coast super-fest 2008". no need to travel!

Well, they sort of do this with the Reading/Leeds festival in England. Like, X band headlines Reading Friday night and Leeds Saturday and Y band does vice versa. That could be arranged couldn't it? Reading/Leeds = Baltimore/NYC?
You know, I've never met the man and couldn't pick him out of a lineup but I always feel sorry for Seth. He works REALLY hard and it seems to me he encounters a lot of headaches.

I do, but I just go into it assuming that's going to be the case
Appreciate the thoughts though
-
seth, this means there's an opportunity for you: if you can switch to any other weekend (preferably in september), you'll have the festival-goers to yourself. let coachella east and vineland knock each other out.
-
it's really out of control. do we really need another festival? they usually end up haveing the same lineups anyway.

this has gone too far. i'm taking up arms. someone has to pay for this (and no, i'm not talking about over-inflated ticket prices).
a complete mockery, this is.
