I'm assuming a bunch of you are going. Pretty psyched...I don't think I've seen them since their tour for Happy Songs for Happy People.
-
in.
last night was great.
-
was it loud?
-
i'm going, thanks to sweetcell.
-
Last time I saw them at the club, it was subdued...at least by their standards. Man, nothing can ever compete with that Ottobar show...I'll never forget the wave of distortion when My Father My King hit. Whew.
-
the show with ISIS opening was really loud...

well... obviously somewhat
but compared to previous years, no. the shows haven't really been super loud since 2002.

<raises hand>
-
Argh can't make it tonight. I hope they come back for another round. I like the 'single.'

yeah . ..that was intense.
-
Just saw them in Richmond last night. They were really really good. Much better than Explosions in the Sky.
Also, fuck buttons were awesome. Crazy and awesome.
-
wow, never seen mogwai play a 2 hour set. I thought it was an excellent show!
thoughts?
-
Very much an excellent show.
And yeah, I wasn't expecting that two-hour length at all.
-
grrr had class till 10pm.
please tell me they didn't play my father my king
-
What did they play? Did it sell out?
-
I don't think it sold out at full capacity, but it probably sold out at a reduced capacity with the stage forward about 10 feet. It was pretty packed.
-
Yeah it was more packed than I guessed it'd be.
And no, no My Father My King sadly.
They did play a good mix of old and new, though; I'm not the best with their song titles.
-
Definitely pretty killer. I did feel my interest start to fade a bit in a the middle of the set since I'm not super familiar with some of the new songs, but man, that opening and ending killed.
Anyone catch Fuck Buttons? A few things they did were a little annoying (that yipping/drum beat bit, and they singer (?) relied a little too heavily on that same distorted voice effect), but otherwise they were pretty moving. Glad I caught them.
-
Second time catching them and yeah Fuck Buttons were good too. They also played a bunch of new stuff. That distorted screaming works better in some songs more than others. "Sweet Love for Planet Earth" (first song they played) is one where I think it works well; it just sounds so cathartic and fitting in that song. There were other songs, old and new, where it wasn't really necessary, though.

setlist:
# the precipice
# friend of the night
# ex-cowboy
# scotland's shame
# summer
# helicon 1
# i'm jim morrison, i'm dead
# hunted by a freak
# i love you, i'm going to blow up your school
# cody
# thank you space expert
# like herod
# batcat
encore:
# christmas steps
# we're no here
they were supposed to play 2 Rights, but instead played Christmas Steps.
-
That was my exact thought. I'm mostly familiar with Sweet Love for Planet Earth, so I'm used to hearing it used there. But each song is so different, I was a little bummed to hear it used so prominently each and every time. Still...impressed with the rest.

Yep, they started off with Long Way from Home.
F*ck Buttonzzz. Don't know where their sound is coming from. I'm sure 90% of it is prerecorded and 10% is the little things they add (keyboard, vocals, etc).
-
It sounds fairly different live than on record.
I'm pretty sure most, if not all of it is being reproduced live.
-
I will say that, while I normally think electronic music is bullshit live (cue sweetcell telling me otherwise in a 4000-word post :) ), I was able to track most of what they were doing as they were doing it.

hahaha oops. sorry about leaving the first song of the setlist.
-
Oh and this was my first experience with the new PA. The sound improvements are definitely very noticeable; it was the crispest/easiest-on-the-ears sounding 930 show I've been to. The anal audiophile in me does have to point out one small thing though. I'm almost sure I heard some bass clipping in a couple songs. Not sure which ones but one was toward the beginning and one was in the middle. There were some pretty loud static pops when the bass drum was hit a few times in each song. Other than that, I thought it sounded flawless.

i wasn't there so i can't comment, but you have a track record of saying that about electronic acts so i'll take your assessment with a grain of salt.

:p :p :p :p (since an image is worth a thousand words)

Christmas Steps... Cody...
I should have gone to the show. I'm surprised Christmas Steps didn't destroy that PA system.
